Fall Fashion the Knitwear Trend

Welcome to our seasonal fashion edit.  Today Mary Ann, Annie, and I are joined by our friends Brenda from 1010 Park Place, Jennifer from a Well Styled Life, and Susan from Une Femme d’ un Certain Age.  I always enjoy reading what the latest trends are, even though many don’t apply to those of us over 50. There are always a few that I am interested in.  This year I love the idea of tailored blazers in plaids and leathers and the knitwear trend.  Let’s take a look at the fall fashion the knitwear trend.

over 50 fall fashion the knitwear trend

Has Covid changed the way we will forever dress?  I am tired of living in yoga pants but we still aren’t going out, traveling as much, or getting dressed up very often.  Are you? What is more comfortable than yoga pants and sweats but is slightly chicer, stylish knitwear. According to Vogue, the comfy-chic trend is here to stay but in the form of knitwear. When I spotted these sweater pants from J Crew I knew they were going to be my uniform this fall. Add their Cashmere relaxed rollneck, Banana Republic’s Ribbed T-neck and the possibilities are endless.

Obviously, one could wear the separates together simply like this. Any one of the separates could be styled simply with each other.  All three colors look beautiful together. Here I styled them with an inexpensive hat and inexpensive tortoise jewelry (a favorite), and the not so inexpensive Artemis Design Co Mules.

Here I am wearing the BP turtleneck (these are beautifully made by the way) with the sweater pants belted with a J Crew Sophie blazer from a few years ago.  You can see how I styled it in Over 50 Fall Fashions We can Actually Wear.I am also wearing my comfy velvet birdies.  All items or similar are linked below the graphic.

I am wearing the gray cashmere rollneck and the gray sweater pants with a necklace from Parham and Company, Artemis Mules, and a J Crew Cashmere Wrap from several years ago.  This would be a great travel outfit.  Bag the neclace and put on your Ilse Jacobson flats.

Any one of the sweaters would look great with a pair of jeans & Birdies. The J Crew Leopard bag is very vintage, similar linked below.

That wraps up Fall Fashion the Knitwear Trend. You might also enjoy my popular post Wide Leg Pants for Women Over 50 here as well. I apologize for wearing Birdies in nearly every pic.  I cannot find my boots since we moved.  I only had three pairs that fit me, but I sure don’t want to buy new ones when I know they are in a box somewhere! You might also enjoy reading the articles below regarding Fall trends if you would like a good chuckle.

Here are the trends that those of us over 50 might want to take note of

Vibrant shades are still popular

Loose fit denim

Sweater vests

Lavender-I haven’t seen much but I love it

Monochromatic looks from head to toe-I like this it is slimming and makes one appear taller

Elevated knitwear

Blazers and jackets, and preppy plaids in deep shades of green, navy, burgundy, brown, and black.

The rest of them are just comical at our age.  Let’s pop over and visit my fashionable friends and see what they have to say.

I NEVER comment on blogs or reviews, but your style has compelled me! I’m in love!!! Everything about it makes me drool and wish I could own each piece; from the basics to the gorgeous accessories. I too have a silver frock, but embrace it. My challenge is making cream and brown-based colors work. You make it look easy. I also love yellow gold and have invested in a slew of baubles and beads and can’t let go. I’d love to see some looks highlighting how to make them work with silver hair.

    Thanks for inspiring me!!

    Rebecca

You look beautiful in everything you choose! One of my girlfriends went gaga over the outfit you wore in our shared image: The black dress with the colorful shawl. Thanks again for letting me part of this post! So fun! xoxo, Brenda

  4. Donna says

    Cindy,
You look amazing in everything! I have 3 pairs of those pants in my cart but I’m afraid that they’ll be way too short. Do you know of any other place that sells knit wide leg pants that are full length? I’m 5’9″ and I’d really love to get some! Love what you do!

I agree with everyone else. You look fabulous in every outfit. You are a Classy Sassy dressing lady for your age. I like the same style you wear. You do not dress old looking!!

  7. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy,
Well you inspired me again, I just ordered two pairs of the knit pants. I hope the will fit and not be scratchy, and wont’ get saggy or stretched out. I’m looking forward to trying them out!
You look so good in everything, I think it’s your ability to cleverly and uniquely accessorize that sets you apart from the crowd!
    Thanks for a great post!
    XO Heidi

  8. Ga yle Miller says

Cindy, these look so great on you.! Sweater pants and my body are mutually exclusive. Those scarves are the bomb! I also seen to lack shoulders, but I may try the belted version. I think that will stay on. Cindy, you are an inspiration, and even though I can’t copy exactly, I may it a whirl in my version. We already like many of the same things.

  9. Leslie says

Just yesterday I was rooting through my closet and shelves looking to see how I could dress a little less summery even though it was 97 degrees! Then your post showed up this morning. You must have read my mind. I did order one of the cashmere mock turtlenecks in pale gray. Since they don’t qualify for the 30% off sale I will try one and see if I like it. I did order a size smaller after reading the reviews. Love the idea of a thin layering sweater. Love the coral color also so I’m hoping the test sweater works out. Like you I lost a significant number of cashmere sweaters to a month invasion a year ago. So rebuilding my basics is a must. Great post. Now to find a pair of loafers!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Leslie

I know cashmere rarely goes on sale darn it! Annie just sent me some little bags of essential oils and herbs to get rid of the moths and they smell heavenly. I can’t wait to try them!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

It took me forever to find the perfect lipstick (at least for me) Sandra Sallin is the expert by the way. I have a lot of fine lines around my mouth and every lipstick I have ever owned has creeped into the cracks. Covid and masks exasperated the problem. It is Chanel Longwear in Strawberry. I emailed you the link.

  10. Katherine says

    Cindy,
You look really wonderful in all your outfits, you have a unique way of creating such fabulous looking outfits. Like
how you style pieces together to create interest.
I did try to order the tortoise earrings, bangles and cuff jewelry, however the link stopped me, indicated the price only.
I always look forward to all of yours posts.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Katherine

I don’t know what the deal is with the earrings and cuff. Go to Francescas website they are super cheap! I keep losing one of mine so I order a couple pairs at a time. My cuff is old J Crew but theirs is identical.

  11. Laurie L Cordeniz says

Hi Cindy. Always look forward to your fashion over 50 posts. So hard to find ideas for fashion I can wear and not look foolish or frumpy! Can you share where you get your glasses – readers? They are great and a current post on them would be appreciated ( I think you have done something in the past). Thank you for your posts – always so helpful!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Laurie

Thank you so much I am definitely no expert. I do my best. I think women our age want to look fresh and current but not frumpy or like we are trying too hard!! My sunglasses are Vera Wang. All of my glasses are prescription besides the pair that I am wearing in the all tan outfit are peepers. I tried to find them on their website and had no luck. I purchased at Gifts on the Go in Salinas. I am sure she can get them for you if you call ask for Donna.

  12. Holly says

I am sooooo ready for sweater weather. The roll-neck and the knit bottoms are on my shopping list! Thanks for the inspiration and more peeks at the fixer-upper! Happy Autumn!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Holly

The pants are on sale right now and you know the sweaters will be at some time too! Patience!!

  13. Mary Ann Pickett says

Wow, Cindy!! Love every single shot of you. Thanks for organizing us and for so much great inspo!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan

I love that the knits are still comfy (will we forever want comfy due to covid) but are just a little more polished than jeans and sweats (which I live in). As I said to Jennifer, you fashion pros always offer such insightful tips and tricks.

  14. Jennifer says

You look amazing! In all of these looks. These pieces make such a great base for accessorizing, which you are the best at. So fun. Thanks for including me
    !

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jennifer

They are a good base for accessorizing. I think that is why I love them so much. So glad you joined us. You and Susan always have such good insight for those of us amateurs.

  15. Sharon says

Cindy, you are a style icon to me! Every outfit you put together is so stylish and polished looking. I love all these outfits but would appreciate some other budget friendly options though I no that’s not an easy task in this age of throw away clothing. I’m bookmarking this post for a reference when I need an outfit idea. Thanks so much!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Oh my goodness Sharon thank you. I fell into fashion purely by accident. I thank Lisa Bayne of Artful Home for that. I will do another budget fashion post soon. I have found that H&M has some good things, I just need to order some and check them out.

  16. Linda says

I love the sweater knit pants from J Crew but afraid they would be to short for my 5’7″ height. What is your height. The length is perfect on you. Thanks

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Karen

They are not scratchy in the least. I will vouch for that. I hate scratchy clothes. I wish I had your problem with height. I know someone in my family that will probably be at least your height or more!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Linda
I am 5’4. I wish they made them in tall, because then I could buy them in full length as well. My friend Elizabeth likes them too and she is tall as well.

  17. Robbie B. says

Thank you for your generous ideas. My go to since college has always been the black turtle neck sweater, but the last few years( even with my weight low) I can’t wear because of saggy skin on my neck! Bummer. Sometimes a mock turtleneck works but I have opted for V shaped sweaters now. My new Fall look is a double breasted black blazer with brass buttons from BR . I had it on over a simple black legging and black shirt yesterday and a young woman said how much she loved my outfit and “loved the colors”…. which was sweet because I think she was responding to the brass buttons and didn’t realize it! It pulls any thing together instantly.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Robbie

I love a black turtleneck. You are correct it does call attention to the sagging neck and jowels darn it! I just wear them anyway. Brass buttons are lovely if you can wear gold…gray hair prefers silver!!

  18. Gray says

Here’s my 2 ¢…I like full length wide knit pants – when I am wearing them, I don’t want my ankles to get cold! So I have found 2-3 pair of full length ones. I LOVE the ones you showed, you look adorable in them. I just wish they were full length. ALSO, having white hair, I have stayed away from fall colors, but you look great in them!? I never wear camel, leaning toward gray and navy instead, but I might start!!!!!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gray

I did the same for a couple of years but I love camel so I have given it a shot. I can’t wear navy. My hair was almost black, back in the day before it was Gray and I have dark brown eyes so Navy just never worked, but I love it on others. The challenges of gray hair!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Dorothy

Thank you so much. I had it this length for years then gave it a break for a few years. I am so glad you like it.

  19. Carolina says

    Your fashion posts are the best! Always so inspiring even if much of it is above my clothing budget now that I am retired. I am always looking for a way to use your style as a guide for what I can afford to buy and I have made some ebay jewelry purchases thanks to you. Always keeping WWCHD in mind (-;

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Carolina

Thank you so much. I buy most of my clothes on Ebay. Now that I blog I am buying more regular retail so that you all can find them. I will try and do a budget friendly post soon!

  20. Linda says

GAH! It seems that everywhere I look, the knitwear look is all about cashmere and merino wool. What about those of us who can’t wear those fabrics? It’s really hard to find knits that are wool-free.

    • Lauren says

LandsEnd have a whole line of knits that are not cashmere or wool…..look for “Starfish” as the nickname for the line

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Lauren

I will check Lands End out. I used to buy my turtlenecks and swimsuits from them. The turtlenecks were very well constructed and then they just got weird. They were neither fitted or loose just unflattering. I need to give them another look. Thanks for sharing!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Linda

Interesting, I don’t have allergies, so I forget about that. The turtlenecks from Banana are 50% LENZING™ ECOVERO™ (viscose), 27% polyester, 23% nylon. I don’t know if that helps. Can you wear synthetics? I am glad you brought that up. I imagine it is a problem. I am surprised they don’t make more heavy cotton knits. I am going to keep my eye out.
