I don’t know about you but I am hanging on to summer as long as I can. This time of year I can’t help but dream of my favorite fashion season Fall. In California particularly Fall has a way of sneaking up on you. Let’s look at some of the trends for 2019 that we in the over 50 range can actually embrace. Apparently, we will be revisiting the 60’s and 70’s. The fall season’s collection combines “colors from the American Southwest, with prep school styling”. The upcoming fall season will be channeling Ali McGraw, Jane Birkin and Annie Hall (via Diane Keaton). So, the question is, what are the over 50 fall fashion trends that we can actually wear.
According to those in the know, green, leopard, maxi skirts, leather, suits, plaids, faux fur and lace will be big this season. As in every season there are always a few trends that we can all embrace no matter our age. These are the three trends that I can personally embrace and maybe you can too.
#1 Maxi Skirts
I know I thought I was too old for this trend. Turns out it is actually quite flattering. It covers EVERYTHING up. The skirt is the linen lily skirt from Cp Shades that you saw me wearing in my post How to Stay Stylish In a Heatwave . It can easily be worn into fall with the addition of my leather moto jacket and these blondo nina boots. I think I might be in love they actually have a heel and so far very comfortable yippee ! The leopard shirt is from J Crew.
I am wearing this ensemble with an old necklace from French Kande. I will link similar below
#2 Leather
Here I am wearing the same ancient moto jacket with a white no iron tunic shirt from Chicos and my favorite Spanx faux leather leggings.
I accessorized the outfit with a very old leopard belt and handbag from J Crew and Madewell mules.
The Chicos shirt covers the bum thankfully. Otherwise, I would not be able to pull this off.
#3 Leopard
I consider leopard a neutral and I am so happy it continues to be popular. This is the Sophie Sweater from J Crew., my only new purchase in this post. I love this sweater. It is lightweight (perfect for fall and later under a coat if need be), and falls and flatters beautifully.
I am wearing it with a vintage pin, madewell jeans, my favorite seychelles deep sea booties and tortoise hoop earrings.
#4 Patterns and Colors from the American Southwest
I embraced this trend many years ago, and I still like it. A little goes a long way at our age. I love this Peruvian Connection poncho (actually I LOVE everything they do), and it is on sale. I included it in my how to rock an over 50 travel post back in April. I paired it with the same faux leather leggings and an American Indian bracelet (similar)that I have owned for a while, and Vincent Platero Earrings that were a gift from my husband.

Thank you Cindy for your chic postings. My leopard sweater just came and I am in love. I did order the medium but may order the small for comparison. The quality and feel is amazing, thank you again and keep posting, you are my go to styler.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patti
I am so happy you love that sweater. It is a winner in my book! I hear it is almost sold out so good that you got it while you could. Thank you so much for your kind comments as well. I love getting feedback. Have a great weekend!
Sheila-Merle Johnson says
You look very chic in each outfit. Love the different hairstyles; the advantages of longer hair, n’est-ce pas? So many nice details in your styling – the upturned collars, the pin at the neckline – yum! I’ve gone wild over leopard this season. I’m mixing it with everything. I hope you’re having fun these last days of summer. I’m having a great time with improv. @sheilamerle
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Sheilamerle
Thank you so much for the sweet comments. I know what you mean about the hair. I haven’t had my hair this long in years. The only advantage is being able to tie it back. I am glad you are having a good summer and are keeping busy. So sorry I missed your trunk show!
Didi says
Very helpful post. It’s so nice to see you modeling the clothes. I’m thrilled you’ve linked to the Seychelles booties. You’ve shown them in the past but I wasn’t able to find the page. They”re on sale in my size now so it must be meant to be. I’ve lived in the Ho’Opio sandals this summer so you definitely have ‘feet cred’ in my book!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Didi
I am so glad to hear you say that about the Olukai’s. People keep asking me how I can wear flip flops? It is because they actually have arch support and they don’t look clunky! I have them in black and tan and I need to get the silver ones! They are worth every penny in my book. Also, thank you for the encouragement regarding the modeling. I really do not enjoy it at all but I understand people want to see the clothes on real people gray hair and all! Let me know how you like the Seychelles. I need to order a second pair. I do slide in a gel insole if I am walking all day but they are great! Thanks for your support!
Eva says
Thanks for the leather leggings. I went shopping in my closet & found a pair the other day & asked myself ‘dare I’ & I dared, again! I don’t do many prints but I agree with you fully, leopard print is definitely a neutral to me too! Nice post, thanks!
Cindy Hattersley says
You can rock them Eva! Especially if you do not have a large bum like me! I wear them whenever I can cover it up!
Pat Huber says
You do a great job of inspiring women, including me! Thank you!
Cindy Hattersley says
I sure miss you pal!
Kellie says
Cindy, I love how you put these pieces together! And Fall Is also my favorite clothing season. I also purchased the Spanx faux leather leggings, but am perplexed about what size to keep. Did you find they ran smaller than their regular leggings? I’m also a little concerned that if they’re stretched too tightly, the fabric surface will lose some of the “leather” look. Anyone else have this dilemma?
Thanks again for a fabulous post—makes me excited for Fall!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Kellie
I actually have the medium. I have owned them for at least a couple years and they have not stretched out. They also have not lost their leather look. I had a cheaper pair (another brand) and they did both. Thank you so much for commenting and weighing in!
KAREN SINK says
I LOOOVE these outfits!!! You look amazing in all of them & I think this is my favorite you have done. For me if I can’t decide what to wear and I put on an animal print I feel great. Those 2 first pictures of you and then the one with the cape were wow’s! What a fun time this must be for you. I am so happy for you.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Old Friend!
You are so sweet Karen. You look fabulous in leopard as well. I hope it never goes out of style. Trust me there are multiple pictures taken before there is a keeper. As you remember I am not very photogenic. You do remember who ruined all of the cheerleading photos…
Nella says
You look fabulous Cindy! Leopard is a neutral for me, I love wearing it and never get rid of it in my closet…I’m loving every new trend this fall! Hugs…
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Cutie!
I agree Nella! I feel like there are clothes I can actually wear and love this year!!
Jennifer ConnollY says
You look fabulous Cindy! I love all these looks on you. That leopard is stunning on you.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Jennifer
Why thank you! I bet it would be stunning on you as well. You have that pretty blond hair that loves leopard!

P.S you need to join us one day!

Cindy, I love when you do these style posts, it makes me want to rush out and buy all of these fun fall fashions! You have your own style, you always look chic, on trend, totally age appropriate and SO gorgeous! Thank you and the other bloggers participating in this Fall Fashion series for all the wonderful inspiration!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Gail
Thank you for always being so supportive of all of us! I just hate modeling clothes but I finally had to put on my big girl panties and realize women my age want to see real people in the clothes flaws and all. I hope we can meet in person one day! You are the best.
Karen says
Cindy,
I love fall clothes and there are some very pretty, classic items in your selection. The leopard with the chambray and denim is a favorite.
Karen
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Karen
That J Crew Sophie Sweater is so flattering. It surprised me. My daughter looks great in it to, although I am sure she will style it with something that is more au currant!
Joanna says
The snake skin look is trending this year, also. I think it wears as a neutral quite like leopard. I bought a snake skin look top and love it! I’m on the lookout for a low heeled bootie now.
I find the maxi skirt makes me look bigger but you look great in it. Perhaps, a cropped jacket (aka moto jacket) will balance out my fitted top with long skirt. I’ll give it a try before I buy.
I’m borrowing your idea for a broach at the neck of my chambray shirt. Ok? 😉
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Joanna
I think the fitted top is key with the long maxi skirt. I am certainly not small but I have a smallish waist (considering the size of my bum). I try to accentuate the positive! Please let us all know if you find a good bootie!
Steep_learning_curve (Linda) says
LOVE all your choices, and especially how you put them together… that’s the trick! The late sixties and early seventies brought wide leg jeans (preferred these over bell bottoms), boots, midi skirts, peasant blouses and jewelry made of wood, beads and stone😍. Still look back fondly at my old photos decked out in all my glory. Thanks again for sharing your inimitable style and keep it coming❤️
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Linda!
I agree with all that you said. I really like the wide-leg crops with either sandals or mules. I am not a fan of the straightish bell either. I do love the fact that they are bringing back some of the things we can still wear (in moderation!!). Thank you for reading and commenting. It is what makes the blog interesting.
Shari Goodman says
I love the pairing of the leopard print with the denim. I would have never thought of combining the two. Thank you!
Cindy Hattersley says
Thanks Shari! I do too. I actually bought that jacket for my daughter for her birthday and thought…hmmmm wonder if I could pull it off with a shirt I own.
debra @ 5th and state says
you wear them well my friend, stunning actually! if I could look like you, I would get out the visa!

What great looks! You are rocking that leopard print!! Thanks for reminding me about Peruvian Connection; I used to get their catalogs but haven’t in a while. They have such beautiful colors. Will take a look at their website.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Susan
Thank you so much for joining us again. I just loved this group of stylish women! I love your new look since you had your colors done. You are inspiring me to challenge myself as well.
Kim says
Damn Cindy you look downright hot in these trends! I am loving the moto jacket on you- so cute. Is that vintage? Also love how you wear the pin with your chambray shirt. Looks like Ali McGraw. Cindy you really inspired me here. If someone just has these pieces you can really create a lot of chic outfits. I’m thinking of going for those leather leggings. You really make them look great. And I’m dying over that poncho. Just yesterday I bought a long pleated skirt, so I’m trying that out too. Not usually a long skirt gal, but coming back from England, everyone had them on!!
You have the best personal style of anyone I know. Thanks for including little old me with all you stylish gals. I’m loving all the posts! xx Kim
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Pal! I guess my jacket is vintage (since I am). I have probably owned it for 8-10 years. I forget to wear it sometimes! And thank you for comparing my look to Ali. She is my icon. You would look fabulous in those leggings, but you still look like a teenager! Thanks for joining us again you always do such a great job Kim!
Sue says
You are just the cutest!!! Our style choices always agree. I love the j crews sweater or jacket but do not know how their sizes run. I think we are about the same size so I be so bold to ask what size you are wearing? If not that’s fine. I always enjoy seeing your outfits!!! Thank you
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Sue!
I bought the small in the J Crew sophie sweater but I think I could have worn the medium as well. I guess it all depends on how you want it to fit. My daughter got the medium but the small would have worked for her as well. For reference, I am only small in the waist (big bum and top). Ask anytime about anything. I am certainly not sensitive. It helps everyone the more questions and comments we get.
Sue says
Thank you sooo much for responding. I enjoy your fashion choices so much❣️❣️❣️
Barbara at Mantel and Table says
Excellent choices, Cindy – you look fabulous in all of them! It’s so fun to see what’s in – or back in – style each season. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration. I might have to go shopping this weekend … !

Love your choices and your declaration that leopard is a neutral. I retired from work world in 1995, so my interest in trends is zip do da. I simply dress as I please! But glad to see some of my old favs have been dusted off: faux fur (Fabulous Furs, another addiction), lace, leopard, maxi skirts and ethnic pieces from Peruvian Connection…which was started in a barn not too far from where I live!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patricia
Thanks for weighing in. I love Peruvian Connection and think they do a fabulous job. You know what I still work and I wear what I want (jeans dressed up most of the time). Sherry Hart (design indulgence) said something that reinforced my comittment that one can wear jeans anywhere as long as you dress them up. I love lace as well as long as there are no ruffles involved. I look foolish in anything with ruffles. My tomboy past back to haunt me I guess.

I have to laugh Cindy bc as I told you before I study your fashion posts (Mary Ann’s as well) to get ready for any trip I take. Recently in DC as we were walking somewhere I noticed a Peruvian Connection store and I was like “STOP! We must go in there before we leave!” Of course all my guys, husband included, is like what’s that store and why is it a must? And I’m like bc my friend Cindy raves about them! ha.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Nancy
They are having a great sale right now! Tell them I sent you!! I am dying to work with them. So far no luck!!

Hi Cindy!
So happy to see this post. Glad to see so many bloggers sharing fashion for us gals who want to remain stylish over 50! I love that leopard prints are actually considered neutral. My color palette is black, camel, red, ivory, and leopard.
Absolutely love this post!
Thank you for sharing!

You’re wearing one of my favorite clothing items: a moto jacket! Although mine is quilted instead of leather, I’m pulling it out right now! Well, maybe not for today as it’s still warm, but in my very near future. Leopard-check. Leather pants-I’ll give it a try your way. Long skirts-I’ve got to try it!
Thanks for the inspiration, my friend!

Hi Cindy,
I’ve never posted before, though I’ve enjoyed your blog, particularly the pictures of you in your clever outfits. I follow several of the others posting about fall fashion today, but you’re the one closest to my height (5’1″), so most helpful. I’ve been most grateful to see another petite older woman’s style.
I’d like to suggest, something that has helped my feet and hope it doesn’t offend: https://www.correcttoes.com/foot-help/foot-conditions-and-problems/bunion/
I’ve found great differences with these and hope they’ll help you. Wearing them has definitely improved my bunion, and I’ve also changed my footwear for the sake of my feet.
I have no connection to CorrectToes except that I bought them & they helped me.
All the best, and thanks for taking the time and effort to do this blog.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Cara!
I have thought about trying those. I am going to give them a try. I needed to hear from someone which were best. Thank you so much! FYI Mary Ann is 5 1 just your size. I am long waisted with short legs…not a good combo!
Cara says
Cindy,
Thanks for replying! I’m glad you’re going to try the CTs. I found the videos of stretching and instruction on proper footwear most helpful. I’ve come to the conclusion that the way most shoes for women are designed, it amounts to slow-motion foot-binding. We have to demand footwear that is foot-shaped, otherwise women are doomed to foot problems.
Annie Diamond says
Cindy!
You look fantastic and you are making a good case for leopard print. I rarely wear animal prints, but the way you put these looks together…I think I need to add a new neutral to my closet. Love your vintage pin! You look beautiful in every look!
