How to Stay Stylish in a Heatwave

As promised I am going to share How to Stay Stylish in a Heatwave.  I just spent four blistering days in the Atlanta Heat. I don’t wear shorts or short skirts, so how did I stay cool?  Can you say linen? Yep, loose-fitting clothes (primarily linen with a few very lightweight cotton pieces thrown in) saved my life. Many of the pieces I took are not from the current season but I will try and link up those that are and find suitable substitutes where possible.

six ways to stay stylish in a heatwave

Day One was a traveling day.  I wore cotton leggings and an off white long CP Shades tunic (from last season) and my Olukai flip flops.

debra phillips and cindy hattersley

Day two we hit the ground running at America’s Mart.  I wore simple white leggings, an old navy camisole (my fav ) They are inexpesive, and camisoles only last a season so why spend a lot of $$$. I finished it off with a CP Shades linen tunic and my comfy korkease audrina sandals (no longer available).

Hotlanta Day 2 what I wore

On day three we headed to Scotts which is both indoors and out.  We really needed to be casual and cool.  I wore an old pair of Anthropologie white crops, (Love these they feel like pajamas), my favorite Michael Stars tee, my olukai flip flops and simple silver hoops and bracelets.  That was it! I substituted these similar crops from Nordstom.

What I wore Scotts Antique

Day four found us back at Americasmart.  I wore the linen lily skirt (new fav and the coolest thing I wore), j crew or cp shades linen shirt, horn jewelry and my favorite olukai ho opio flip flops. This was the outfit I got the most compliments on.  This skirt is super flattering and incredibly comfy. I have shown it in cotton here.  If you would like the linen email CP shades on Instagram and they will find it for you.

How to Stay Stylish in a Heat Wave

The last day we went back to Americasmart and hit some of the spots we missed.  I wore a (similar pair from last year) of lightweight chinos from Everlane, a top almost identical to this Chambray one from Rails, simple horn jewelry, and my trusty Olukai Ho Opio flip flops.

Love your choice and your style. I think your best accessory is your smile and your willingness to take things/people the way they are. Wanna’ feel comfy in sticky hot weather? Linen is your friend. Adore the skirt!

  2. Mumbai says

I don’t like shorts either but on the last day you worn it? Not proper on young women except on
the beach and much less on women in our age. I like the look of day 4 and it suits you fabulous.
Living over more than 20 yrs in hot areas I learned from the Beduins…cover your body.

      Hi Mumbai
I agree!! Loose linen clothes and covered! The bedouin have it figured out!!

  3. Sandra Sallin - Apartfrommyart.com says

Yes, more you and less of those perfect pictures. I love clothes on you. Hate to tell you but you have a natural way of posing in clothes. They always look great on you. Stop critiquing yourself. I find that leggings are just too hot in the summer. Thus I’ve bought some pants or flown things in linen clothes. I will simply not worry about wrinkles and instead be chic with wrinkles. I heard that the answer is after washing, dry for three minutes, take out and straighten the seams and just let the clothes air dry. More you and less photos!!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Okay…Okay me a good poser? Have you forgotten who always ruins our group pictures? I have learned to love “wrinkles” in my clothin ghat is. Not so fond of them on my face!! What choice do we have?!! We all don’t have gorgeous skin like yours!!

  4. Cindy Hattersley says

    Hi Karen
I don’t finght the wrinkles I embrace them. However as Sandra says I do look a bit rumpled a lot of the time.

  5. Karen says

    Cindy,
Great looks. I have some linen blouses but the truth is I don’t buy a ton due to the wrinkle factor. I think a couple of those outfits may change my mind, you look great in them.

You look great in these items, Cindy. I think we can all agree that you are quite stylish. I have two questions: 1. Would you consider doing a “look for less” post? For example, that skirt is really nice, but I would/could never pay $252 for a skirt. Ditto for the jewelry; if you add up the cost of an entire outfit, it far exceeds my budget. 2. How do you go somewhere that requires a lot of walking and wear flip flops? Don’t you need support for your feet? Plus, I would be afraid I would trip over something. I would want my feet more “protected” in a situation like that, but I am intrigued that you can do it! Thanks for giving us all of these ideas. Yes, please show more photos of YOU (I know you don’t like to be photographed; I don’t either.) The picture of you in the ponytail is adorable. Thanks!

      Hi Judith
That is a great idea for a post. To be honest I buy a lot of my clothes on Ebay.I love your idea of a look for less post. I will work on that. Maybe give me some ideas of what you would like to see. I could never wear plain old flip flops. The Olukai Ho Opio has enough support that they are my most comfortable sandals other than my corkease favorites. I have a bunion on one foot that prevents me from wearing a lot of shoes.

I sure love your style!!! I have to dress for Napa (party there) now and its about 100 degrees!…making me thing I should wear white linen in spite of the long wrinkly drive.

Although I found your blog through interior design/decorating, I LOVE your style and identify it as more my own than the fashion bloggers i follow. Enjoyed today’s post but wish you had featured daily photos of what you wore rather than just showing photos of the items. I have collected an impressive number of linen pieces the last couple of years, love that I can be covered yet cool and comfortable in the heat. I just need to learn to accessorize better without feeling like I’m playing dress-up.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Barbara
Thank you so much for your comment and reading! I fell into blogging about fashion by complete accident. I have never considered myself an authority on beauty or fashion. I just know what I like and try to share what I learn. Hence I am not very good about the whole picture thing! I am trying to get better. The problem is I hate getting my picture taken. You are encouraging me to change my ways. I know I must do that.

OH DEAR GOD, THAT PICTURE AGAIN…….I NEED TO GO ON A DIET!

you always looked smashing, I am going to take this to heart, love your style Cindy! that last day with that stunning skirt and your hair in a pony tail was darling, the compliments went all day.

    you are my style maven!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Debra
You looked stylish the entire trip as well in linen. I can’t imagine wearing anything else in the heat. That skirt is a winner, well worth the investment. Miss you!

  11. Elizabeth says

Beautiful and comfortable outfits for a heatwave. I wear a lot of linen shirts in the summer but have never found a pair of pants that I think are comfortable. I am also a huge fan of horn jewelry so I will have to check out your links. This post is proof that you can be stylish, comfortable and cool at any age.

Thank you for your kind words about my in-laws.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth
I totally agree with your comments about trying to find comfortable pants. I am in Florida at this moment wearing nothing but linen again. Anthropologie had some pants a couple years ago called fair weather pants. You can find them on Ebay. You will love them if you aren’t afraid to buy on Ebay.
