Use Quality Basics as a Foundation for Holiday Looks
If you have been here long you know that I repeat things from year to year and don’t advocate purchasing new items without assessing what you own first. You will be surprised how you can rethink what you own for special occasions. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. A shirt with sequins, dressed up with festive accessories and your favorite jeans is appropriate for many casual holiday gatherings.

I purchased these two COS knitwear separates this fall. Here I paired them with a favorite vintage paisley scarf, booties, a native American brooch and hat. You can see how I styled this outfit in my post Bespoke Fall Wish List for Women Over 50 who Own Their Own Style. I have been wearing these separates on repeat

I paired the culottes that I purchased as a set this fall with a cashmere sweater, turquoise statement necklace that I inherited from my mother in law, and suede booties.

Add a Little Sparkle for Fun
Vintage Brooches, rhinestone necklaces, bracelets, and sequin items can all be sourced at resale outfits.

Black is always holiday ready especially in velvet. I paired the velvet pants with a dark green wool blazer,(the buttons with vintage rhinestones), boots, and a favorite hat.

Bring on the Sweaters

I have owned this Mersea sweater for a couple of years. It is also a great traveling piece. You can’t go wrong with faux leather pants for the holidays. Pair the faux leather wide leg trousers with a vintage rhinestone brooch, vintage rhinestone earrings and a vintage clutch.

This fun shaggy sweater is holiday ready with a tulle skirt and knee boots. Add a pair of rhinestones and a sparkly clutch for interest.

Purchase an Inexpensive Tulle Skirt
I wore my daughter’s tulle skirt left over from one of her proms for years until it was finally in shreds. A few years ago I purchased a couple of inexpensive ones from Chicwish. I wear them a couple of times every year during the holidays. There is no need to spend a lot of money on a tulle skirt. Tulle is tulle.

This pic is from last year. I styled my black tulle skirt, with a white shirt, a vintage needlepoint bag, vintage rhinestone brooches, a blazer that I have owned for years, and my combat boots.

I have had this tulle skirt for at least three years. You can see it in past holiday posts. I am wearing it with the same blazer as above and Gentle Souls Emma boots and a Peruvian Connection blazer that I was gifted many years ago.

Shop Vintage
Thing about picking up some interesting vintage items on eBay, a charity store or another resale outlet. You can always find vintage rhinestone bracelets, earrings ,bracelets, vintage sequinned items or blazers that add interest to your holiday attire.

Here I paired a crazy quilt skirt I found on Etsy with my combat boots, and a hat. In the summer I would wear this skirt with sandals and a jean jacket.

Add a Pop of Plaid

This plaid quilted jacket is vintage J Crew. You can usually find one or two on eBay or Poshmark. That is where I found mine. I paired it with jeans and velvet birdies.

This vintage plaid shirt is another eBay find (also vintage j crew), I paired it with the black tulle skirt, combat boots and vintage brooches.
Shop Pop of Plaid
If you want to add a little sparkle to your holiday attire think about adding a metallic shoe or boot, a sequin top or a metallic skirt. I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on something too holiday specific.

A Well Styled Life
Une Femme d’ Un Certain Age

Thank you Cindy! I am going to wear a pair of black jeans with sparkles on them that are several years old but like new and a new burgundy Tee with comfortable SAS Mary Janes and a bit of gold jewelry. Christmas isn’t fancy but we have albondigas soup and flan versus another big meal; that’s one is on Thanksgiving. I have scheduled a hair appointment and found the recipe everyone likes for a fancy cranberry sauce that is easy and delicious. One thing I must say: This last week I have searched for petite departments in several very nice stores and found they have been discontinued. Where have I been?..COVID, caring for babies, been ill myself , and working.. I will continue to use some websites that carry them but it is often a long shot and things go back.
Hi Donnie
I have heard that from so many. I don’t get into department stores very often, but I have noticed the lack of petite and tall options. I think you almost have to shop exclusively online.
I have found anew shopping store on-line thanks to you!! Thank you so much!!!
Ha ha!! Thank you Natalie!
Cindy,
Love your fashion sense, taste in home decor, and most importantly, your whole vibe of humor, kindness, and non political embrace of all women at our stage in life. Your blog is my happy place.
Hi Jennifer
You made my day!!
Your looks would elevate any gathering…thanks for all the inspiration. Now off to read the other ladies!
Can you provide any information in the wide black belt you paired with the toule skirt and red plaid blouse. Just a beautiful look! Thank you
Hi Heidi
the belt is an old belt worn backwards actually, For the same look I would purchase and obi style belt that can be tied either in the front or back. I usually do that.https://rstyle.me/+0HJ1SGlCNJyLSrL4Apaf1A
Etsy has many here
Anthropologie has one here https://rstyle.me/+0HJ1SGlCNJyLSrL4Apaf1A
Hi Cindy,
You need to come dress me, I think I do a decent job in my retired super casual lounger type of dressing. Till I look at how you put yourself together. Think I should run away and hide in my closet and start over.
Love the patchwork shirt, and black turtleneck. You look adorable, ❤️❤️❤️the vintage look. The tulle skirts are fabulous. I was rocking out to Stevie Nicks today and I have always loved her Gypsy vintage look. If you have been to Fleetwood Mac’s or her concerts you get her vibe. I have some clothes like that and love them, very vintage.
You look swell in everything. Your style is unique and just so very special
The one….red plaid and the black belt…makes your waist “Gone with Wind!!!
Well that picture was a year ago…it has expanded a bit Eileen!!
Thanks for turning me on to Chicwish and tulle skirts. I just ordered two!
Your suggestions are great for holidays, but I say let’s dress like this most days. Frankly, I find it fun and I don’t care if the sweatpants and leggings people roll their eyes at me.
Hi Dianne
They are so reasonable and they have so many stiles!
Cindy you look great in the plaid blouse leather belt and black tulle skirt. You are so lucky to still have your small waist! Your ideas for shopping your closet first are my favorites. Thank you for sharing your unique holiday style.
Hi Sydney
Thank you so much. My weight has crept up this last year. I barely have a waist. I need to get a handle on it!! So glad you enjoyed the post.
Thanks for brightening my morning with such a fun and inspiring post. I love that you encourage us to shop our closets first. Such a great idea for so many reasons – plus our closets are full of things know we love, and things that fit! Besides enjoying your imaginative outfits, I get inspiration from your backgrounds. You’re a treasure!
Hi Ruth
Thank you for reading! I appreciate it!
I love that cheerful bright pop of green, with the Mersea sweater! You’ve made it cool and contemporary, with the faux leather pants. Super wearable outfit!
You are exceptional, with your wide ranging sources for clothing and accessories. I appreciate you always making an artistic statement with your choices.
Hi Lisa
Thank you so much. I try my best!!
Brilliant use of Brooches!
Hi Nan
Thank you so much!
Love how imaginative you are in using the sparkly brooches! Last Christmas I gave vintage brooches to all my female relatives and friends. One way I like to use my vintage pins (sparkly or not) for evening is pinned to a fabric handbag. I’ve been collecting the handbags for years in different colors, when they are on sale. I also have a few velvet tote bags, and use brooches on them. I also display them by pinning them to the linen cover of a throw pillow I keep on the bed. Keeps them handy and reminds me to use them!
Hi Sheila
What a clever idea pinning them to the pillow!! My collection is left over from my daughter’s wedding. When I made the bouquets I embellished each with a vintage brooch. Half of them left them at our home…hence my collection!
I love the red plaid shirt with your tulle skirt! The styling is spectacular with the brooches down the front. I’m stealing that idea!
Hi Jennifer
Thank you so much. As I said I have had a black tulle skirt for years. One has made an appearance nearly every year on the blog!
What fun and lovely outfits, Cindy! That plaid blazer is so cute.
Hi Susan
I got that blazer on eBay several years ago. J Crew has had some fun blazers over the years haven’t they?
Beautiful choices, Cindy! I especially love the tulle skirts and the way you styled them.
Hi Cindy
Thank you so much! Those tulle skirts are fun this time of year and so inexpensive!
