How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe-Part 3

If you have been following along on this little journey to Italy here is How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 3. This series is a remake of a wildly popular series I did a couple of years ago.  I have updated the posts with completely new information and wardrobe selections.  If you missed the first two installments click here How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 1, and here How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 2. I will not go into great detail about the first two posts as this is a very long post and I don’t want you to fall asleep! All of the items are linked below each picture for easy reference. How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 3 is the final installment in the series.

Part 1

We discussed how to pack and developed “our key players”.  These are the workhorses that make up the base.

Part 2

We added some accessories and additional items to the base in order to create outfits for five days.  Stick to a consistent color scheme and choose items that can be worn in multiple ways to get the most bang for your buck.

Part 3

Today we will be in Montepulciano, one of my favorite Hill Towns.  Today it warmed up so it is time to break out the flip flops. I cheated the 3 pair of shoe rule a bit with these Olukai Ho Opio flips.  When we traveled to Italy in the Spring it had just snowed.  I never dreamed it would end up in the 70’s. Thankfully I had a simple pair of flip flops which I ended up wearing for half the trip. I wish I had taken these. They are comfortable and have enough support to wear all day.  They are also casual enough to wear to the shower. I added this inexpensive yellow stripe tee from Nordstrom for a little color.  You can bring wear the long cashmere wrap in the morning and take it off when it warms up.  You could also switch it out with the Athleta jacket if there is a chance of rain. You can wear any of the pants you brought along.  Here I am showing the Ivanka Trump compression pant.

MONTEPULCIANO DAY 6 GET THE LOOK

Day seven in Florence it has cooled again.    The fun Peruvian Connection Bambala Wrap that you wore to dinner last week can be worn with the Peruvian Connection Extreme turtleneck (in my book the best layering turtleneck made) and jeans on a chilly day.

Tonight, wear the Planet Artists Smock with your cashmere wrap, Spanx leggings, and your fun Target slides if you don’t have far to walk. Pin the wrap asymmetrically to add interest. Carry your croc clutch (that doubled as your IPAD carrier) and add your fun tassel earrings.

FLORENCE DAY 7 DINNER-GET THE LOOK

The last day in Florence calls for something a little cooler.  I added the black and white stripe tee from Nordstrom to the mix.  This combo could be worn any day the weather permits.

LAKE COMO DAY 9-GET THE LOOK

Day 10 we are going to a wedding in beautiful Bergamo.  The Michael Stars Shine tee (in whatever color you choose) can be jazzed up with some pretty rhinestone jewelry.  I added a pair of palazzo pants which could also be worn to dinner any other night.

Below find what I call the “supporting cast”.  These are all of the pieces that aid the “key players”.

THE SUPPORTING CAST-GET THE LOOK

This capsule wardrobe could easily be expanded allowing at least another week probably two.  The whole idea is to keep your wardrobe light and portable so it can fit in a carry on if need be.  Your wardrobe pieces need to work together to create multiple outfits especially if you are going to be gone more than a few days. I hope this might help a little bit if you are planning a trip soon.

I just returned from a four day trip to Sedona.  I will be preparing a short summer travel post soon.  I know many of you have requested that. These travel posts are so time intensive but fun. Have a great weekend!!

Agree with the comments about what a lot of work you “packed” into this post! My look is a little less casual and more options for dining out, which, of course, means MORE CLOTHES! My college roommate solved the too much packing stuff by becoming a nudist and only doing nudist vacations. I won’t be going there!

Since you love leopard like I do, check out Eric Javits rain hat. The brim is wider (and I think more flattering) than the typic “bucket” hat.

Such great advice. I’m definitely packing my flip flops from one of your posts and a wind/rain jacket. I will link to this tomorrow in my Summer Travel Mix and Match post. You are such a pro at this.

With Summer here, it would be great to have a wardrobe for the warmer weather. Thx

Nice post Cindy! I really love these wardrobe tips and appreciate all the time and effort it takes to help make us all look and feel great on our travels! We really should have tried to connect when you were here in AZ. I think that was probably a missed opportunity for both of us!

I really appreciate your posts, but especially on travel wardrobes. I use these to remind me I have almost all these kinds of pieces and need to use them and not say “just one more top (pants, skirt whatever)”! But I count 5 pairs of shoes! My exact dilemma. When I’ve traveled for 2 plus weeks with only a carryon, I want to throw all of the clothes away afterwards—I’m so sick of them. Maybe, just shoved to the very back of my closet instead.

    Hi Cindy,
Great pieces and looks that you put together. I recently ordered the Keen Elsa sneakers that you recommended and I absolutely love them. I have had numerous surgeries on both feet and these have great support and are so comfortable (and stylish). I’ve only worn a few times and can’t get over the compliments that I have received, even men liking them.

Saving this post for my next trip. I will need evening wear though as it is a cruise. We are also doing a Carribean cruise, so I’ll need to take warm weather clothes in the winter. Would you do a warm destination cruise post?
I’m love by the wrap tee! Would you say it is tts?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna!
Isn’t that wrap tee a find? I don’t normally do stripes but this is a good one. I would say it is true to size on me! I am planning a short summer travel post (nothing as involved as this one) as we just returned from Sedona!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

I found them totally by accident at TJ Maxx. Best pair of pants I own. You would be amazed at the quality. I have never worn anything by Ivanka.

Love the big white shirt and the wraps/shawls/ruanas. Absoloutely cannot leave home with a big huge blanket scarf for the plane. Plus sundry items for self-care on the plane. I always start with black and white and add 1 color, RED, BLUE, to change it up. I am very very careful with my clothes so that everything travels well. I mean, who has time to iron when you’re on vacation?! And, shoes. They must be super comfy, no matter how glamourous, otherwise you’ll suffer X10. I’m a bit dressier than you California girls (a Texan, remember) & do always have 1 drop-dead outfit. I mean, we could get invited to a beautiful home for dinner, right? I know how much work you put into all this. Very well done, Cindy-Poo !!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marsh
Thank you so much for weighing in and appreciating the time that goes into a post like this. It took forever! I completely agree about comfy shoes. Who wants to be in pain on vacation. You are also right about “california girls”, we keep getting more casual!

I am so bummed…..the Athleta Rain Drop jacket is sold out in most sizes! Hoping it shows up again in the coming months. Love your travel posts!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sharon
They do have a new jacket that I linked to. I am a big fan of Athleta. They sold out shortly after my first post. I know a lot of people bought it. I hope they bring it back as well!

I always enjoy your travel blog and Love all your ideas and style! It’s just so sad that the Ivanka black pants are not available in size L or XL. The reviews were amazing. Hopefully, they will be available in the near future.
    Thank you Cindy

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Darn it! I had no idea. They are a great pant for the money! It sounds like Ivanka needs to know that everyone isn’t a size 2! Thanks for weighing in Francie. Let us know if you find a good equivelent, that may be troubling for many of us!

WOW, great looks! Now when do we get to see you in the outfits with the beautiful scenery behind you? Please hurry.

I love your ideas! I just returned from 3 weeks in Germany/France and am hoping to go back later this year, so you have given me some great suggestions. Thanks.
