The Luxurious Fall Colors you will See Everywhere this Summer

Happy Sunday everyone!  Today I am joining my pals Annie and Mary Ann for our Sunday favorites.  Have you noticed how many designers are showing fall colors for Spring and Summer?  I am sure all of the “autumns” are happy about that.  Let’s take a look at the luxurious fall colors you will see everywhere this summer in fashion and design, and much more.

THOMAS CALLAWAY AND ASSOCIATES

I have been following Thomas Callaway’s work for years.  I think some of his designs served as inspiration for our Chualar home at one point. What appeals to me about his work is the fact that he always embraces the character of the original architectural style of the home. You can find his beautiful portfolio here, or you can follow him on Instagram here. I am seeing all of the colors in these examples of his work everywhere this Spring.

INA GARTEN’S FIVE TIPS FOR AN ORGANIZED KITCHEN

Leave it to Ina to keep it simple.  I love her five tips for an organized kitchen.  Now don’t ask me if I will follow them.   I am anxious to hear if you knew about her asparagus tip?

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

Have you noticed the incidence of fall colors for Summer? How do you feel about that? I loved this J Jill linen shirt dress the first time I saw it. I even like this necklace they have shown with it.

I have met the QuintEssence team twice now once in Tennessee at the big antique show and once in San Francisco they are lovely ladies and I LOVE their Blog!

  2. Juliet says

I do not use Ina’s asparagus tip … but I’ll start right away. Love Ina … she never steers us wrong. I’m not familiar with Thomas Callaway … so glad you introduced me. I LOVE color … and I see where your style lines up with his. Both are spectacular. Speaking of great color … your outfit of the week is perfection. Ken Burns documentaries are the best and I can’t wait to watch this one of founding father, Ben. Have a great week! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Juliet

Why did we not know about that asparagus tip? Ken Burns is amazing isn’t he?

  3. Nan of TN says

Hi Cindy- I also watched the Ken Burns Benjamin Franklin documentary and was left with the feeling: Yes, what a gifted man he was, but certainly flawed as a husband to Deborah and as a father to his daughter.

My favorite biography is David McCollough’s “John Adams”. What an incredible depiction of the true scope of a man who was devoted to his wife Abigail and as influential to our country’s founding! HBO did an excellent mini-series several years ago, John Adams, I recommend. Abigail’s influence on John truly enabled him to accomplish so much in establishing our democracy, as she tempered his obstinate tendencies. Showtime is premiering a mini-series, “First Lady” next week and I’m looking forward to that.

As for fashion- Eileen Fisher is adding lavender shades of linen for late spring/summer and can’t wait for them! As a life-long “autumn”, I am still adjusting to my newly steel grey hair negating wearing those autumn colors now. Thank goodness for eBay to sell my old Eileen Fisher autumn-hued wardrobe! I am getting ready to list them, but it’s so tedious a process.

    Enjoy your move!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan

We started watching John Adams and got interrupted. We loved it to and need to get back on track. Eileen Fisher’s color pallette is pretty isn’t it? Who says we all want spring colors?

  4. Mary Ann Pickett says

So pretty…your outfit of the week. Love those colors. You find the best designers to follow.

  5. Sarah says

I’ve had my eye on that J Jill dress for a while; now that you’ve featured it, I guess I had better get moving! In my mind, it’s perfection–sleeves & midi length for some coverage, button-up for versatility, pockets (which in my mind should be mandatory), and free of “just-fell-out-of-a-Calistoga-wagon” tiers that seem to be ubiquitous. I understand the frustration of those whose best colors seem hard to find this year, as spring season usually proliferates with bright white and pastels that I have never been able to wear. One would think that designers would catch on to the notion of cool and warm coloring.

We have Ben Franklin recorded. Looking forward to it!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sarah

I love that dress. I was a firm Autumn before going silver, and still gravitate to those colors, but find with my silver hair I can wear other colors sometimes better. Yes to pockets!! I think you will enjoy Ben Franklin. Thanks for weighing in!

  6. K winch says

Fall colors work well in Fall. They somehow seem a little heavy for summer heat. The terracotta dress does not say summer to me at all. Ken Burns work is always worth your time.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

I know what you are saying…but there are those that look best in Autumn colors that are delighted. It is interesting that there are so many fall colors this Spring. Eileen Fisher in particular. So agree about Ken Burns…wonderful

  7. Janet Arden says

We also loved the Ken Burns documentary on Benjamin Franklin. What a complex and gifted man! I am a total Ken Burns fan — when all else fails and I need to escape, I just go back and watch one of this films.
I love the J Jill dress, but terracotta is not one of my favorites. Maybe they’ll make in another color for next season? Have a great week.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janet

I am surprised they did not offer that dress in other colors as well. I agree regarding Ken Burns. Love his work.

  8. Nan, Odessa, DE says

Cindy, please find a cheaper hat with the rolled up brim to share!!!
It reminds me of Diane Keaton’s style.
Is there a name to this style of hat?
    Thank you.

PS. Is there a name to the style of this hat?

  9. holly says

We loved Benjamin Franklin as well. You can never go wrong with a Ken Burns production.
As to the asparagus, yes, I have been storing mine “Just Like Ina” for years. It works to rehydrate them after the dry grocery environment, helps them to last longer, and is kind of pretty to see the spears standing tall on the fridge shelf.
Hope you are feeling better amidst a visit from Summer and your house move. Between you and MaryAnne, I am a little envious of the thrill of a new home. Be well…..

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Holly

I am much better thank you. I need to do Ina’s asparagus trick. I have no idea why I never tried it. What would we do without Ina! Mary Ann is in Florida now. I am sure going to miss her!

  10. Gayle Miller says

Cindy, I have warm undertones in my hair and skin, so I would welcome an Autumn palette year-round. Designers seem to be oblivious to that idea, and do the opposite of what was traditional in order to seem trendy. They also disregard that the seasons are opposite below the equator, or maybe they are trying to make their market more global. At any rate, I don’t care what is trendy and just stick with styles and colors that are appropriate and flattering to me. So, for years we have had to wait for the appropriate season to buy clothing that suited our coloring, so I’m not opposed to having a little variety.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gayle

Great points! I don’t feel like we all have to be wearing pink and yellow because it is Spring!

  11. Gray says

I also had the Benjamin Franklin show on my list – so glad to know it’s good.
I ALSO noticed the fall colors! I cannot wear them so am not a fan, and was pretty bummed to see them flooding the sites! Oh well…

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gray

I bet so! I do find it interesting that we are seeing so many of them this year. You will love Benjamin Franklin.

  12. Annie Diamond says

Cindy, I love fall colors all year long. I remember years ago reading an article about Vera Wang who described her home as “perpetually fall…” that stuck with me. Fall colors are very earthy and I love that! That J.Jill dress in terracotta…so pretty! xx

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Annie the first thing I thought of when I saw that dress was you! I could see you wearing it with jeans!

  13. Leslie toms says

I stopped in a favorite little boutique yesterday only to be once again demoralized by the Autumn Colors in abundance. I secretly call it the Jenni Kayne effect. For months and months the beiges, creams, earthy colors have reigned supreme. As a true winter I can’t wear any of it except perhaps on my feet. Add to this color storm the fact that much of it is cut for women under 35 it’s demoralizing to shop. Luckily there is always black and white plus jean color. Am I alone in this?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Leslie

Hip hip hooray for black and white! I figured those who love Spring colors would be very disappointed in the insurgence of fall colors in Spring. That is why I thought it would be an interesting topic!

  14. franki Parde says

The “Benjamin Franklin” was so well done…wish they would have taught history “that way” back in the day… ADORE “QUISSENTENCE!” franki

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Franki

I so agree…I wonder if they use any of the Ken Burns documentaries in school these days. I would have loved learning history through his eyes. Instead I hated history in high school because it was so dry.

  15. kim says

Cindy I didn’t know about Thomas Calloway, but that first image got me! So completely different and beautiful with that fireplace. I also didn’t know the Qunitessence team had a new book. That photo with the hats and the bench could have your home in Chualar. Yours was more beautiful!
I love this outfit- so pretty and the sandals are really cute. I just started recording the Ken Burn’s Ben Franklin and Max and I are going to start it tonight. I will watch anything he does. Well have a beautiful Sunday. Excited about your dresses post on Tuesday and what you and Sarah share. I hope I can not fail you.. xo Kim

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

Isn’t that project of Thomas Callaway’s interesting? I should have mentioned that Jill Sharp Weeks’s home is in the Quintessence book. I have mine ordered! Looking forward to Tuesday!

  16. Pat says

I’ve been putting asparagus in a glass jar with water for years…sometimes do same with parsley, it seems to help preserve freshness.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pat

Good to know it works for Parsley as well. Basil is the one I always find challenging, and I use it all the time.

  17. Karen B. says

    Hi Cindy,
This post was full of wonderful items that I will go back to read and explore in-depth. As usual, I love your ideas for outfits for those of us over 50. That linen dress is officially on my wish list. In California (as you well know) a dress like that could serve us well even in early autumn.
    I hope you’re feeling better.
    Karen B.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

Yes that linen dress is so appropriate for us Californians. Since we are moving to a warmer climate (in Spring Summer) I am stocking up on linen!
