Chic Fashion for Tall Women Over 50-Suzanne Loonie for Ageless Style

I met Suzanne last year at the LTK Conference and just loved her energy. I thought it would be fun to sit down with her and chat about the challenges taller women face when trying to find stylish outfits. Suzanne inspires women over 50 to embrace their height, their confidence, and their personal style with ease. From wardrobe staples that flatter taller frames to the accessories that elevate every outfit, Suzanne shares how she makes fashion fun, elegant, and ageless. Let’s dive into Chic Fashion for Tall Women Over 50-Suzanne Loonie for Ageless Style.

First off, tell us a little bit about yourself – your background, and what motivated you to get started on social media?

Hi there! I’m Suzanne, a 55-year-old wife of 33 years and proud mom of two amazing adult kids. From the time I was little, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher—and I did just that after graduating from Wheelock College in Boston with a degree in elementary education. Teaching was such a joy, but when my children came along, I became a full-time mom.

Once my kids were older, I found myself pulled back into education in a different way—through fundraising and event planning at my daughter’s school. I coordinated the gala, served on the board of trustees, and eventually became the Parent Relations Manager.

Through all of it, one thing has always remained the same: my love of fashion. I grew up surrounded by stylish women—both my grandmothers and my mom had impeccable taste, and I definitely inherited their passion for clothes, shopping, and putting together an outfit.

I’ll admit, I was a little slow to join Instagram. But when I finally did, I became a quick fan of fashion creators—I loved seeing what they were styling each day (and yes, I was very easily influenced to buy a few things!). After years of friends and family telling me they loved my style, I decided to take the leap into content creation. It was terrifying! I wondered if I was too old, if I’d figure out the tech, and if anyone would even follow me.

In March 2022, I jumped in with both feet. I quickly realized that creating content is A LOT of work—and if I wanted to give it a real shot, I couldn’t balance it with a full-time job. So, in June 2022, I took another leap of faith and left my job to become a full-time creator. It’s been a whirlwind ever since—challenging, but also so rewarding. And I’m so grateful for the amazing community that has grown around A Tall Drink of Style!

What social platforms do you prefer, and which ones connect best with your audience?

I currently have accounts on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.

My primary platform is Instagram, with reposting to Facebook. I also try to keep up with Pinterest. TikTok is not really my thing, and I had very little success. I’m working on shorts on YouTube and hope to transition to long-form content in the near future.

We’re part of a mastermind group of women over 50. How has that experience helped your business journey?

Content Creation can be a very lonely and isolating job. We work by ourselves all the time! I always look forward to opportunities to meet and connect with other content creators. Last year, I attended LTK Con. It was at this event that I had the chance to connect with so many creators, including the women now part of this mastermind group. Over the last 12 months, these women have become my friends, my sounding boards, my mentors, and my teachers. It is an amazing group of women, and I am grateful to be included with a core group of like-minded and similarly aged women.

You’re famous for rocking the tall-girl look! What fashion hurdles have you run into when trying to find styles that actually fit those extra inches?

Being tall has always presented fashion challenges for me. My upper body is relatively “average” size, except for very long arms. But my legs have been my greatest challenge. Finding pants long enough has been a struggle for as long as I can remember. It has taken years for brands to offer longer inseams and for exclusive “tall brands” to make their way in the marketplace. With my proportions being “different” from average, it is a lot of trial and error when trying new clothes. But my age and finding my “style” has helped.

Have you found that there are certain brands that offer more options to taller women? If so, what lines would you recommend checking out?

Although many brands now offer longer inseams, some of the inseams offered are still not long enough for women over 5’10”. Especially women built similarly with exceptionally long legs.

I have had success with brands like: Abercrombie, Banana Republic, Gap, J.Crew, Levi’s, Good American, Madewell, Rag & Bone, and Veronica Beard.

You love classic, timeless, everyday style. What are five mainstays that take you from season to season, year after year?

The five things I think every woman should have in their closet, regardless of age or size, is:

A white button-down shirt, an amazing pair of jeans, a favorite cardigan, a favorite crewneck sweater, and a navy-blue blazer.

I could add about another 10 things to this list, but these are at the core in my closet.

I am loving and adding a bit more chocolate brown to my closet this year, and I am loving it!

You love to travel! Where are you headed next and what are you most looking forward to at your destination?

We do like to travel. We have come to a time in our lives now that our children are adults, that we have the freedom to travel. It’s amazing!

We frequently head to our house on Cape Cod. It is an antique built in 1803 that my parents bought in the 80s. It’s a very special place to us. We are currently doing an extensive renovation, which has required more frequent trips.

Next up, we will be heading to different parts of Florida between October and March.

We love Florida and look forward to getting out of New England when the colder months arrive.

We are also a Disney family. We are annual pass holders and Disney Vacation Club owners, so Disney is a frequent destination.

My daughter and I will go to Disney in October. After that, I will head to Indianapolis for the CreatorLand conference in November. Immediately after Indy, my husband and I will head back to Florida to Vero Beach. Then in January, we are taking about 3 weeks between Disney properties and Marco Island. And last on the books at the moment will be a trip back to Disney in March.

What are a few of your current favorite travel must-haves?

As we have begun to travel more frequently, I am trying to become a better packer. I am a habitual overpacker! But regardless of the quantity I pack, there are a few things that I won’t go without. Routine is important, so my AG1 green drink and all of my supplements are a must, as well as electrolytes. Favorite skincare and haircare are a must. Packing cubes have become a non-negotiable for me. Favorite suitcases from CalPak and a favorite carry-on bag from MZ Wallace are also necessary. A good backup battery charger is a must. And Apple AirTags. I won’t go anywhere without everything being tagged!

Your hair is gorgeous! How do you maintain its rich color and what are some of the products you use and love?

Thank you! I actually went almost completely grey several years ago, so color maintenance is a big deal, and unfortunately, with short hair, I have to wash it almost every day, which means my color fades quickly, and red or auburn colors are the fastest to fade as well. When the pandemic hit, I had to pivot and learn how to color my own hair quickly. With the help of my long-time stylist, I started using Madison Reed at-home color and learned how to apply my own color. My hair grows fast, and my roots show quickly, as well as the color fading, so I get coloring and cutting every 3 weeks! My stylist cuts, shapes, and thins my hair every three weeks. And she and I alternate on coloring.

You have fair skin. What makeup and skincare products are most tailored to your needs?

Skincare has been an essential part of my routine for a very long time. One of my favorite brands is Colleen Rothschild. I have been using many of her products for about 10 years now.

I am somewhat minimal with makeup.

My foundation by DRMTLY is intended to be more of a primer. It is more skincare and SPF based but I use it as a lightweight and light coverage foundation, and my concealer is also by DRMTLY and is also skincare-based with just enough coverage under my eyes.

My favorite blush and contour is Merit.

I rarely wear eye shadow because I have no idea how to apply it correctly!

Mascara is a must. I use many different brands.

And a little lip color in the morning, although I almost always forget to reapply it during the day.

How do you stay in such great shape? Is there an exercise routine or diet you stick to?

We have a Peloton Row, a Peloton Bike, and I like the Peloton strength classes.

If I’m being honest, my body is my greatest challenge right now. I don’t recognize myself in the mirror. I blame menopause for the changes to my body. The last year has been a drastic change to my body composition, my figure, my weight, and how clothes fit, and it has affected my mental well-being more than I care to admit most days.

But back to your question, my current workout routine is to do something Peloton at least 3 days a week ideally 4 days.

If you could give your younger self any words of advice, what would they be? Share your words to live by:

Be kind to yourself and others.

Always remember that someone may be having a day worse than yours.

Always make yourself a priority.

Family first – no matter what – someday they will be gone.

Life is short. Do the things!

Follow your joy and your passion.

Make good choices.

Skincare, health care, good nutrition, and movement are important.

Wear sunscreen. ALWAYS!

  1. Hi Cindy,
I just wanted to thank you for all the work you put into your blog. I absolutely love your style! It seems that many women our age tend to wear blue, black, white, and gray. I think your colorful pieces are amazing. We don’t have to fade into the background unless we choose to. You shine! Thanks for all of the inspiration and for showing women our age that it ok to stand out and be beautiful!

    1. Hi Judy

I wear my share of black and grey, but I love color too!! I especially like a colorful jacket!

  2. Cindy,
Thank you for sharing your interview with Suzanne! It is always nice to meet new and interesting women. I love Suzannes’ style and honesty.
Menopause is a challenge for us all and it certainly plays havoc with our bodies and mental health.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Loved reading about a TALL woman. At 6 feet tall I was thrilled to find a tall blogger to follow. Pants, long sleeves and shoes for narrow feet are a struggle.

    1. Hi Susan

My challenge is the long torso with short legs and having to find wide shoes to accomodate my bunion! We all have our struggles don’t we?

  4. Thank you for another great post Cindy! I am now a one of the oldest baby-boomers, have “shrunken” to now being 5″3″; plus post menopausal added weight in my middle and breasts. I have found that wide leg pants reduce my silhouette to a complete rectangle! I only wear straight leg or narrow pants with a slight flare. I was a “fashion and color professional” (education and business) and a proficient seamstress at one time. I believe I understand proportion, but my current body is a real struggle! I love your fashion looks and try to adapt them to my cooler winter climate (Minnesota). Thank you for all of your great work! We really need you out here, Cindy!

    1. Hi Patricia

Thank you so much. I am a jack of all trades and master of none, but do my best! I struggle with your same issues…frustrating!

  5. It used to be difficult to find pants long enough for my 5’8” long legs but not so anymore. And, if they are too short I hem them to just above my ankle, a style which is trending. They look great with sandals, fashion sneakers, and even booties. I would imagine ladies taller than myself would have a difficult time to find pants long enough. Only a few stores carry tall.
My problem now is finding footwear that fits my narrow feet. Most companies do not cater to us, the minority.

    1. Hi Joanna

I hope the ankle pant never goes out of style…I have short legs and they accomodate that issue as well!

  6. Cindy, thanks for opening my eyes to the challenges tall women encounter in fashion. At 5’1”, I live the opposite reality, and hadn’t thought of the challenges others face. I’d like to recommend daily videos offered on utube by Shepherd’s Fashions. They show women from size 2 to 20, from under 5’ to about 5’9”, modelling clothes in ways to bring out the best in each woman. It’s so fun an educational to watch.

    1. Thank you Ruth for the recommendation. Will look into this. At 5’9″ (and I keep shrinking) I’m 56 and finding it hard to find clothes that look good on me.

  7. Beautiful woman! I’m facing the same problems. I’m 178cm. The brands mentioned here are not available in Europe. Is there any woman from Europe who can advise where to go?

  8. Cindy Thank you for this post! If you haven’t done something lately about the petite woman I would appreciate it as a 5 foot one who find many clothing pieces overwhelming, requiring constant tailoring or frumpy. I am fed up with about 90% of what I see in average women’s stores at present. My relative and I had a discussion of this and she is finding a similar issue. My favorite brands have removed their petite clothing from their stores or have it ‘on line’ but often a cost to return makes this a pass for me.

    1. Seconding this! Imagine my surprise (and frustration) when I went looking for a cocktail-type dress for my daughter’s outdoor Spring wedding in the Netherlands. Absolutely NOTHING made for a 70 year old 5′ tall woman who is NOT overweight but has the post-menopausal weight shift to the (already-generous) bust & mid-section! I think I ordered & returned at least 4 different dresses from 1) Saks 2)NM 3)Bloomingdale’s. The last one I ordered was size 10 (I was going to have it altered) and should have been the perfect style for my body type, however– it was of course gigantic in the shoulders and back, but cut right under the bust so it draped over & accentuated the tummy and I looked 6 months pregnant, despite a loose flowy bottom! I’ve given up for now and will wait for spring. I just do not know what they are thinking these days!

      1. Hi Gemma

I hear your pain…I find a fit and flare (as long as it isn’t too fitted) will work but it is a challenge!
