I have worn and worn this utility vest from Banana Republic several years ago. I wear it with a maxi with linen pants, jeans you name it.
What to Look for in a Spring Jacket Over 60
As we get older our priorities shift and that’s a good thing. Thankfully we know exactly what fits well, feels comfortable, and looks put together without requiring too much effort. A Spring jacket is one the most versatile pieces in our wardrobe. If you are in the market, look for something that transitions easily from cool mornings to warmer afternoons that can be tossed on without a second thought.
Before we dive into styles, here are the key features to prioritize when shopping for spring jackets for women over 60:
1. Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics
Spring weather can be so unpredictable. It can be warm one minute and chilly the next. . Look for fabrics like linen, cotton, softshell (what we used to call a windbreaker), or lightweight polyester blends that breathe well, resist wrinkles, and layer easily without much bulk. Avoid anything too heavy or stiff that restricts movement.
2. A Relaxed but Flattering Fit
A good fit is everything. Look for jackets with ease through the shoulders and upper arms that allow comfortable movement that can easily be taken on and off. Avoid overlyboxy cuts that add visual width. Look for slightly tapered or semi-fitted styles that skim the body.
3. Easy Closures
Smooth zippers and large buttons are your best friends. If arthritis or joint stiffness is a concern, avoid tiny hooks or fiddly fasteners. Magnetic closures are an increasingly popular option for women over 60.
4. Flattering Length
Hip-length jackets are universally flattering as they elongate the legs and work with both pants and skirts. Longer styles like trenches or dusters can elongate the silhouette. Cropped jackets will work with high-waisted pants or midi skirts. Save the overly cropped versions for the 20 year olds!
5. Functional Pockets
This may seem small, but real pockets make a real difference. Whether you’re carrying a phone, keys, or dog treats, deep, accessible pockets add practicality to your spring jacket without compromising the look.
The Best Spring Jacket Styles for Women Over 60
Here are the top jacket styles that work beautifully for women over 60.
1. The Classic Blazer
A well-cut blazer is perhaps the most versatile piece in any woman’s spring wardrobe. For women over 60, a slightly relaxed, unstructured blazer in a neutral can be dressed up with pants or dress up a pair of jeans. Look for stretch-blend fabrics that give you movement without losing shape. The classic blazer signals confidence and polish with zero effort.

To be honest I don’t wear blazers as often as I once did. I love their versatility but our lifestyle is very casual here. This Rag and Bone blazer is several years old. I am sure you have a favorite in your closet.
2. The Trench Coat
Timeless, elegant, and endlessly flattering, the trench coat is a spring staple that never goes out of style. The belted waist creates definition, while the longer length elongates the silhouette. For women over 60, a lightweight cotton or cotton-blend trench in classic camel, or beige is an investment piece that elevates any outfit . Opt for a midi length for versatility.

I don’t own a tradtional trench coat. They don’t suit my lifestyle or normally fit me properly. I am very long-waisted. I do wear this denim trench often (no longer avialable). Tuckernuck has a really good one here.
3. The Softshell or Waterproof Jacket
For active women over 60, a quality softshell or waterproof jacket is a must. Lightweight, packable, and incredibly comfortable, these jackets are perfect for morning walks, gardening, hiking, or travel. Modern styles are sleek enough to wear casually in public without looking too casual. Look for ones with a flattering cut through the torso.
4. The Utility Jacket or Vest
The utility jacket (I have a softspot for these ) look for a relaxed, shirt-style with multiple pockets. These are one of the biggest spring trends (if you find them flattering), and are wonderfully suited to women over 60. Easy to wear and packed with practical pockets, a lightweight utility jacket in olive green, stone, or khaki pairs effortlessly with white jeans, a simple tee, and loafers or sandals (the definition of effortless style)

I have had this Rag and Bone utility jacket for a few years I bought mine on eBay or Poshmark. You can find several here on Poshmark or here on eBay.Madewell has an almost identical one on sale here as well.
5. The Lightweight Linen or Cotton Jacket
For warmer spring days, a lightweight linen or cotton jacket is breezy, comfortable, and laid-back chic. They pair well with cropped pants, midi or maxi skirts, or wide legs and sandals.

I love this Tommy Bahama jacket I own it in khaki, white and black. It is a great spring-summer lightweight option here in the summer. I wear a medium in this jacket.
6. The Shirt Jacket or Chore Jacket
I am particularly partial to these this year for their versatility. They can be worn open with a simple tee or white shirt, or alone as a shirt. They are perfect for early spring mornings that haven’t quite warmed up. The newer quilted styles are trimmer and more tailored than older versions, making them flattering on most figures.

7. The Jean Jacket
The iconic jean jacket pairs well with khaki pants, a maxi skirt, or a patterned midi dress. For more jean jacket styling ideas you might want to check out my post The Best Jean Jacket Looks for Stylish Women over 60 here.

8. The Statement Jacket
The list would not be complete without a statement jacket in a pop of color or interesting pattern that just makes you feel like you!

The jacket on the left is from Sundance (sadly closed) you can find several on eBay here. The Ralph Lauren linen jacket I also found on resale. I found one here (not exactly inexpensive)
Spring Colors and Prints That Work Beautifully After 60
Color plays a huge role in how a jacket looks — and more importantly, how it makes you feel. Here’s a guide to spring palette choices for women over 60:
Neutrals That Go With Everything
- Camel, ivory, cream and warm beige — universally flattering and endlessly versatile
- Soft grey — cool and modern, pairs with multiple colors
- Navy — a classic that works as a neutral for many skin tones
- Olive and khaki (my faves) — earthy, relaxed, perfect for casual styles
Bold Colors That Brighten the Complexion
Don’t shy away from color! Women over 60 often find that brighter, warmer tones near the face are incredibly flattering and uplifting. Neutrals are more versatile but everyone needs a statement coat or a pop of color for fun.
How to Style Spring Jackets Over 60
A versatile spring jacket will offer you many options
The Classic Weekend Look
A relaxed blazer or utility jacket over a simple white tee, jeans, and clean white sneakers or loafers. Add a crossbody bag and a simple necklace. This outfit takes two minutes to put together and looks effortlessly chic.
The Elegant Day Look
A duster or longer blazer layered over a midi dress and block-heeled sandals. This combination works beautifully for lunch with friends, or a garden visit or wherever your day leads you!

I often will wear a maxi dress as a duster for versatility. You can read my post on how to style this dress
A softshell or packable quilted jacket over a comfortable knit top and pull-on trousers. Add slip-on loafers and a structured tote. This outfit is practical for airports and travel days but still looks put-together when you arrive.
The Layered Spring Morning Look
A linen jacketover a long-sleeve top and cropped pants with flat sandals or sneakers. This easy combination is perfect for mornings that start cool and warm up by noon.

This jacket was customized by Cara Brown Designs. It was a max mara weekend jacket I found on eBay. I found a similar one here. You might enjoy my post How to Style One Linen Jacket Six Chic Ways here.
Tips for Petite and Plus-Size Women Over 60
For Petite Women Over 60
- Choose hip-length or slightly shorter jackets to avoid overwhelming a smaller frame
- Look for cropped blazers worn with high-waisted bottoms to create the illusion of longer legs
- Avoid oversized or very boxy cuts that can make you look swamped
- Vertical details — pin stripes, a front zip, or a center button placket — add visual height
- Petite sizing sections at retailers like Talbots, J.Crew, and Ann Taylor are your best resource
For Plus-Size Women Over 60
- Look for open-front styles (like a duster or open blazer) that create a long vertical line
- Avoid very clingy or extremely oversized styles — aim for a semi-fitted silhouette
- A defined waist (with a belt or a nipped-in cut) is flattering and elegant
- Hip-length and longer styles work beautifully and add elegance
- Brands like Catherines, Torrid, and Chico’s offer excellent plus-size spring jacket options

Adore your jacket collection.I didn’t know we both had the same two TBahama ones… So good aren’t they? Love the military jacket on you. I bought that one from Madewell you linked to a few months ago and it is great. . This is a great time to grab some of these before they are all gone for the season- like those trenches. Hi Cindy,
You rocked it in this post. Thx for acknowledging arthritis in your hands/fingers when trying to button up your shirts. I’ve had to take them to my alterations lady to make the button holes bigger. Also a big YES for deep pockets.
Number 8. I LOVE the floral maxi skirt, when you showed it years ago or so I did try to purchase it but it was sold out. That is my style, has a vintage vibe. Just my style.
You look fabulous in EVERYTHING!!!
Hi Katherine
I will look and see if I can find one of those skirts. I believe it came from Anthro
Cindy
