Ageless Style: Shauna Grow Reveals her Tips for Staying Chic After 50
Hi Shauna! Introduce us to your story and share with us five fun facts readers might not know about you.
Hello, I’m Shauna. I’m a midlife enthusiast, fashionista, health nut, grandmother, mother, and wife. I was raised in a family of ten children, I’m number four. I was remarried to a wonderful man, after 39 years of marriage. I’m sort of a perfectionist (at least that’s what my hubs thinks). I also am a licensed massage therapist but haven’t ever practiced. At 50, I started a small photography business. I’m very competitive… with myself!
You started the Chic Over 50 blog on a whim in 2015 and it’s grown exponentially since then. Tell us about what has changed and what has remained the same, as far as your vision and goals for this platform from 2015 to present day.
When I started Instagram, it was all about photos. Then reels came into play and almost threw me for a loop. This is a business that is always evolving. It’s constantly challenging me in new ways. I see myself doing this forever, but hopefully slowing down a bit someday. That’s what my husband would love for me to do! At 64 I’m working harder than I’ve ever worked in my life. I run my business alone, photograph and create my own content, with no outside help. I even answer my own comments, which so many influencers hire that part out. Engaging with my followers is so important to me. I love getting to know who they are.

You are based in St. George, Utah. Have you always lived here and what do you love most about Utah?
I was raised in Utah, so it will always be considered home to me. I moved to St. George almost five years ago, after I remarried. I love the desert climate, blue, pollution-free skies, and the beautiful red rocks. The only bad part about St. George is that I live 4 hours away from my family. It’s hard to get to all their performances, games, and events. I miss that a lot!
We can find you on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and often times collaborating with other bloggers/creators. Tell us what you love most about inspiring women over 50 to be confident and beautiful.
It’s thrilling to know that I’ve had a hand in helping others become their best selves. That’s what is so motivating about what I do. It gets hard at midlife to put in the time and effort it requires to stay healthy and active. I get it because I struggle too at times, with an aging body. But I’m also a firm believer that if you’re doing what you can to keep yourself up, it has huge dividends!!!! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love to help women recognize their own beauty and potential!!!!

Your style is all about color! Even in neutrals, you always add just a POP of color to your outfit. You embrace bold colors, patterns, and style trends – how would you describe your own personal style in five words?
Colorful.
Bold.
Chic.
Vibrant.
Tasteful.
You always have on a standout necklace and/or purse. Tell us about your collection of accessories.
My accessories used to be very high-end designer. I’ve learned however, that I don’t travel with any of it, and have found pieces that are much less expensive and much less stressful to keep track of. I do have my favorite Louis Vuitton and Chanel bags, but I mostly use my less expensive bags. Sunglasses, same thing. They aren’t the $500-$700 pair anymore, they are much more budget-friendly and I’m not sick when they get lost or scratched.
Share with us your tips for your fabulous hair always looking so fun and fantastic.
My platinum pixie is my signature. So many people have found me on Pinterest under pixie haircuts. My hair is thick and very easy to style. I never spend more than ten minutes on my hair, and most of the time it’s five. I don’t color it anymore, it’s all natural. I get it cut every four weeks. I use a great styling spray and Control Paste by Aveda. My go to hairspray is this from Aveda.

You recently returned from Greece and a luxury Celebrity Cruise. What are your top-three travel destinations, and why? What trips do you have planned next?
Greece was incredible, and my favorite destination so far in all my travels. Santorini being my favorite. The white buildings and blue roofs are absolutely stunning against the ocean. Assisi and Florence, Italy are my next favorites. My bucket-list includes Iceland, Thailand, and Australia. I have just returned from the Dominican Republic. You can find all of my travel blogs here.
You are always on the go, especially over the last couple of years – do you have a fitness regimen or workout routine you follow to stay fit?
I work out every day but Sunday. It consists of 60 minutes of cardio, with three of those days that include weight-training. When I travel, I try very hard to continue my workouts. If I don’t work out, I feel awful. To me it’s worth investing in the gym, to feel my best.
Do you follow a specific diet/supplement routine and if so, how do you keep it up with your travel schedule?
I eat fairly well, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, low carbs, only water to drink (an occasional diet coke out golfing or non-fat Starbucks steamer). My protein is nuts, chicken, fish, and eggs. I’m also not one of those that is so strict they have to eat at certain places. I’m very adaptable and can find healthy options pretty much wherever I am. My indulgence is dark chocolate almonds.

You are a mom of three and a grandmother, along with being a stepmom and having step-grandchildren. Tell us about how you embrace your modern family.
I love being a mother and it was always my dream. I stayed home with my boys and never worked outside my home. Chic Over 50 was my first job. My stepfamily is absolutely the best. They have accepted me into their fold just beautifully. I couldn’t ask for anything better. My boys aren’t really a part of their lives, mostly because we all live apart from each other. I do wish we were all more unified. Being a stepparent has surprised me. It has been hard for me to look at my stepfamily truly as mine. I’ve been told that that will get stronger and stronger as time goes on, and I can already feel that, after five years.
You went through a very private divorce several years ago and worried about finding love in midlife. Can you share with us your biggest fears but also some of the truly amazing surprises that have come with finding love the second time around with your new husband?
I never wanted to deal with a divorce, but life happens. It has been a sweet experience being remarried to such an honorable man. He is trustworthy, respects me, and is honest. I was lucky to find him (through Chic Over 50). My fear was always to live alone at such a young age. That kept me from ever making the move of leaving. I am grateful for his companionship and sense of humor. It has surprised me that I still have these emotions of young love… like back when you were a teenager sort of. Just today someone came up to me and said, “I love the way you look at your husband.”

Photography – tell us about this passion of yours and what got you interested in it?
I’ve always loved photography, even as a young girl. My home was always decorated with unique frames full of pictures of my kids and grandkids. At 50 my good photographer friend held a photography class. We learned how to use a camera, outside of manual settings. I was hooked and now have all the cameras, and all the lenses you could ever need. I even had a photography studio built in my home, that I used professionally and for my own fun. In fact, some of my earliest pictures on Instagram were taken in my all-white studio. My business was called Shauna Rae Art.
Give us a snapshot of a normal day in your personal life. How you balance work, life, and family?
Wake up about 6 am, work until I go to the gym about 10. Shower, eat my first meal around noon or so. Work all afternoon answering emails, writing blogs, or creating content. If I’m not working out, getting ready, golfing, or at an appointment, I’m working behind my computer. I’m terrible at putting it away. Oftentimes I’m still sitting at my desk at 8-9 at night. I’m horrible and struggle being more balanced that way.
Other than your family, blog, your community online, photography, and travel, what are some of your hobbies that we might not know about? Have you adopted any interests or new things that have surprised you?
Golfing is my main outlet. I don’t get to get out a lot but am part of a women’s league. I really look forward to it each week. I’ll go out once a week with my husband sometimes as well. We are actually going to be golfing with a group every Tuesday evening throughout the summer.

If you could give your younger self any words of advice, what would they be?
It would be to be more confident. Try new things. Growing up I was so self-conscious and was afraid to try anything that I thought I might fail at. I’m very self-driven and started running in my teens. I challenged myself that way, but if it was something in a group or on a team, I was so afraid I wouldn’t be good enough!!!!
Share your words to live by.
These are my three words I chose for 2024:
Connection
Calm
Caring
