15% TCA Chemical Peel Review: Is It Worth It?

Chemical peels promise smoother, brighter skin, but finding the right strength feels like walking through a minefield blindfolded. The 15% TCA peel sits right in the middle. It is strong enough to deliver visible results without crossing into professional-only-territory (and more $$). Realistically a TCA peel targets texture issues, sun exposure damage, fine lines and stubborn hyperpigmentation (dark spots which I have from years of sun-worshipping) that lighter peels really can’t handle. The internet is full of horror stories and filtered before and afters that don’t really show what happens between the application and the results. I am here to break down what a 15% TCA peel does to your skin, who should stear clear, and what the recovery actually looks like. I am not going to sugarcoat anything here, or pretend every skin type will respond the same. Let’s dig into my TCA 15% chemical peel review: is it worth it?

TCA Chemical Peel Is it For You?

What a 15% TCA Chemical Peel does to your Skin

I had my peel done locally by Jesse at Chalekson Medspa. I could not recommend her more highly. She was extremely cautious, and very careful to make sure I was comfortable during the entire process. I know some people do these at home but I would not recommend it. You can follow Jesse on Instagram here.

If you’re thinking about trying 15% TCA (trichloroacetic acid) at home or in a clinic, here’s what you actually need to know before you commit. TCA is an acid that causes controlled damage to the skin, triggering your body’s natural healing response. At 15% concentration, it penetrates through the epidermis into the upper dermis, breaking down damaged cells and stimulating collagen production. This isn’t surface-level sloughing. Your skin literally peels off in sheets over the course of 5 to 7 days, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath. The process forces cell turnover at a rate your skin wouldn’t naturally achieve on its own, but the healing isn’t pretty!!

What it Actually Targets Effectively

Let’s talk about what it can help:

  • Fine lines and shallow wrinkles — TCA tightens the skin and smooths out texture by promoting new collagen growth. You’ll see the most dramatic improvement around the eyes and mouth where fine lines cluster.
  • Sun damage and age spots — Hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure responds well to 15% TCA. The peel removes the darkened top layers and evens out tone over multiple treatments.
  • Acne scars and textural irregularities — Shallow atrophic scars and rough texture improve significantly. Deep icepick or boxcar scars won’t disappear, but overall smoothness improves noticeably.
  • Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — TCA can lighten stubborn dark patches, though results vary greatly by skin type. Darker skin tones face a higher risk of worsening pigmentation if done incorrectly.

What it won’t Fix

Deep wrinkles, severe acne scarring, or sagging skin. If you’re looking to erase years of deep aging or correct significant volume loss, TCA won’t cut it. This is a resurfacing treatment, not a miracle eraser. Realistic expectations separate satisfied users from disappointed ones

The Downtime Nobody Wants to Talk About

Okav everyone talks about the glowing results but no one wants to talk about the getting there. The first 24 hours after application, your skin looks tight and slightly red, almost like a moderate sunburn back in the day. Day two is when things get real. Your face starts to feel stiff and leathery as the damaged layers prepare to shed. By day three, the peeling begins, and it’s not pretty I have to be honest. We’re talking large sheets of skin lifting off your face.. You cannot pick at it, you cannot speed it up, and you absolutely cannot hide it under makeup without making it worse.

Here is my Day by Day Breakdown

Consider this your official ‘Shedding Lizard’ warning. I’m sharing the scary photos because I want this to be a 100% honest look at what you can,and should, actually expect when you sign up for a TCA peel.

Cindy Hattersley TCA Chemical Peel Day 1

Day 1 post peel-feels like a light sunburn

Day 1-2: Redness, tightness, mild swelling. You look sunburned but still human. It is not painful in the slightest.

Day 2-skin is getting quite dry-beginning to look a little scary. Note the pitting on the left side of my face.

Day 3-the peeling begins-full on scary face

Day 3-4: Heavy peeling starts. Skin looks flaky, dry, and patchy. This is peak ugly stage

.Day 5-more shedding!

Day 5-6: Peeling continues but slows down. Some areas finish shedding, others still look rough.

Day 6-beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

Day 8-Totally makeup-free (minus a little lip gloss!). Most of the peeling is officially a wrap, with just a few stubborn spots lingering along my hairline. Even with those tiny flakes, the overall texture, pitting and tone are looking so much better.

Week 2-3: Pinkness fades. Skin looks smoother but remember to stay out of the sun.

Managing Activity

During this time, you’ll need to keep your skin hydrated with gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers and avoid all active ingredients, retinoids, acids, and exfoliants. You also need to wear SPF 50 every single day and reapply religiously. Skipping sun protection will cause hyperpigmentation that’s worse than what you started with (seriously). I was religious about this. I still am. Plan to stay home or work remotely during peak peeling days.

Keep It Cool: Why Your Post-Peel Hates Sweat

Just like you’re currently dodging the sun like a vampire, you need to treat sweat as public enemy number one. Anything that revs up your internal engine and sends a rush of blood to your face is going to crank up the volume on inflammation, redness, and irritation. Even more annoying? Sweat is basically salt water on a raw wound. It acts as a major irritant on fresh skin, often leading to stinging, itching, or even tiny blisters that can hinder the effectiveness of your peel. For the first 7 days, you’ve got a valid excuse to be a little lazy. No intense cardio like running, spinning, or HIIT. Pause all weight lifting sessions, skip hot yoga, saunas and steam rooms. Gentle walks are totally fine, but the second you feel a bead of sweat forming, head back to home base. The results are worth it.

Results After One Treatment vs. Multiple Treatments

One peel will give you smoother, brighter skin. Multiple peels give you transformation. After your first 15% TCA peel, expect noticeable improvement in texture and tone. Fine lines soften, rough patches smooth out, and your complexion looks more even. Sun damage lightens but doesn’t disappear entirely. Shallow acne scars become less pronounced but remain visible. The results are real, just not dramatic enough to make strangers ask what you did.

Jesse-Chalekson-Medspa

Jesse’s Recommendations:

She recommends having up to 3 peels a year, 4 weeks apart. One peel every month for 3 months, or 3 peels spread out between November-April (peel season).

Pain Level and What It Actually Feels Like

When the acid hits your skin, you’ll feel a slight sharp, stinging sensation that intensifies over 30 to 60 seconds. I found it barely uncomfortable. Some people describe it as a hot iron pressing into their face. Others compare it to a severe sunburn combined with a chemical sting. The sensation peaks when the frosting begins, then starts to subside as the acid neutralizes or stops penetrating. Jesse had a fan going during application so I barely felt a thing. If you have a really low pain tolerance, this peel might test you. Lighter peels like 20-30% glycolic or lactic acid are far more comfortable and still deliver results, just more gradually. TCA is for people willing to trade discomfort for faster, deeper improvement. Shallow acne scars become less pronounced . The results are real, just not dramatic enough to make strangers ask what you did. Each peel builds on the last, stimulating deeper collagen remodeling and pushing out more damaged cells. But there’s a point of diminishing returns. After a few treatments, your skin needs a break. Overpeeling leads to thinning, increased sensitivity, and a higher risk of scarring. More is not always more.

Cindy & Summer February 2026 post peel

Mid-February update: Did it erase every tiny flaw? No. But the improvement in my sunspots and fine lines is huge. My skin looks fresher, clearer, and way more ‘awake’ than it did a month ago.

Products Used During Recovery

Editors Note: Use whatever products your professional advises. I was advised to use the barrier cream for the first two days and then switch to aquaphor. Aquaphor is just too thick and heavy for my skin so I switched to cerave for a couple days and then moved on to my current favorite moisturizer Prequel (for my skin which is still prone to the occassional breakout). I am not a fan of the cetaphel cleanser for the same reason so I used Neutrogena Hydroboost (my regular cleanser) and it worked just fine.

A 15% TCA Chemical Peel Review: Is It Worth It? It is a price friendly option, and other than the week of looking like a shedding lizard, absolutely. The downtime and the self discipline of keeping your hands off the peeling skin is real, but the results speak for themselves. Once that old, dull layer finally makes its exit, you’re left with baby soft skin. If you have the patience for the process and a solid week to hide out, this is the ultimate reset button for your skin. I would highly recommend Jesse at Chalekson Medspa for the procedure. My aesthetic RN, Kelly (also at Chalekson’s Medspa), recommended pairing this peel with an IPL laser treatment. I’m actually headed in for the laser tomorrow, so stay tuned—I’ll be reporting back on that soon. If you have had a chemical peel please share your results with us in the comments as well.

Thank you for being brave enough to show the real day by day results.
Al ot of times you see the before and after, but not the journey! The journey is real!!!

    1. Hi Candi

I try to be as transparent as possible ha ha!! Not pretty! The results are worth it and it was completely painless for me. It felt like a slight sunburn. The only annoying part is the week of downtime from the peeling!

  2. Love you but I do not see any difference for what you went through. Still deep wrinkles.
I maybe a naysayer but NO THANK YOU.!!.
Somethings are just meant to be left alone. Love who you are at every stage you go through.
Your beautiful, smart and have great style!

    1. Hi Peggy

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I believe aging well looks different for each of us. This felt like a good choice for me, and I’m happy with the improvement even if it’s subtle. And or course loving who we are at every stage is the most important part!

  3. Wow, thank you so very much for your honest opinion and pics. Something to consider. Also glad you shared products you used after peel.

    1. Hi Cindy

You are welcome. I would highly recommend a peel. The shedding is the only unfortunate part. I found it to be completely pain free and reasonable compared to other options!!

  4. I take my hat to you for your raw honesty when it comes anti ageing procedures. I went back and saw your lower face lift and now the chemical peel, which looked pretty frightful, but if it improved your skin, why not? I am waiting for autumn to have a heavy duty fractionate CO2 laser treatment to my lower face. Meanwhile, I have a tube of Retrieve which is supposed to help texture of your face as well. Thank you for your sharing your experience, As for ageing naturally, no thanks.

  5. Your skin looks very nice! I can clearly see the improvement and why you are happy. Hope you’ll post more photos after the IPL laser treatment. There are so many treatments and products advertised and available. It’s challenging to know which are worth the investment. I truly appreciate that you are willing to share your skin care journey!

    1. Hi Marie

Yes I will. I had my Erbium laser today. Completely painfree and not nearly as much down time as the peel. I will post as soon as I recover!

  6. Hi Cindy,
I support you in what you want to do, I know from reading your blog for years you do your research and are careful before you embark on anything. I’m sure your results will be excellent, and with the additional laser treatment you will be happy with the end result. It’s nice there was no pain involved, shedding of the skin is such a good thing, because it’s doing it’s thing. Being in excellent experienced hands and a person that you trust helps ease what you are getting into.
Thank you so much for sharing your pics in the different stages. It’s GREAT to see how comfortable you are in your own skin to share what you looked like. As I’m advancing in age, 74 what I look at is the heart and what goes on in a person’s head. Girl you have it together and are beautiful, all ways, but inside is what speaks to me.
You are a breath of fresh air.

  7. Shows you how clueless I am. I’ve never heard of this treatment. Of course you have the guts to show your face in all of its glory. You’ve been very open about all of your procedures. My big deal right now is laser to get rid of that Venus Lake on my lip. It’s really gross To be honest you’re always beautiful to me. But I can see where this is intriguing.

    1. Hi Sandra

We are so lucky to have the Chalekson Medspa here under the watchful eye of Dr. Chalekson. I could not recommend them more highly. The staff is incredibly competent, helful and kind!

  8. Wow! Thank you for that up close info. So helpful.
I would have a hard time with no appointments or outside time etc for a full 7 days, but I would love to have it done. I had IPL done with no results at all that I could see. I have also had a plasma fibroblast thing with a 5 day down time, with no results at all…
I would love to do that twice a year….

    1. Hi Gray
This was my first time for a peel and I would do this every year during “peel season”. The results were better than I had with my laser that I had several years ago and way less expensive. Kelly recommended the peel in combination with the laser. I am excited to see the combined results. The laser is the Erbium laser with less downtime.

  9. Thanks for being honest and showing your face. I would not have this done to my face. I’ll just use glycolic acid. Dermatologist can freeze brown spots off face and body with no pain and they are gone!

      1. Hi Rosa

I had the erbium laser that does that today. I will get a better description from Kelli and report back on that in a couple weeks

  10. I just finished my 2nd TCA peel a week ago today and I have to say I am loving the results! I was a sun worshipper in my younger years as well. The down-time is worth it to me!

  11. You’re very brave and your skin afterward look good but it’s not for me . The idea of 3-4 times in one year? Nope. But each woman is master of their own body, so what’s not for me is fine for others.
I’m 74 and am what I am. My face has stories to tell and I’m okay with that. I admire Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, all the great English actors who are content in their skins. It’s role model stuff for me.

    1. Hi Prue

You go girl!! This was my first peel. I have had laser before with mixed results. I was super happy with the peel. Let’s see if I feel the same way with the laser!! I could see myself doing two peels a year. They are very inexpensive. If I looked like you I wouldn’t do anything either!!

    2. I’m with you, Prue! My skin is uber-sensitive, sunburns in 15 minutes. I’m now 68, began using sunscreens in my later teens when they began becoming widely available. My favorite SuperGoop UnseenSunscreen, use it daily, whatever the weather. For smoothing my skin, Vasanti Brighten-Up Exfoliator every morning really improves the benefits of all of my skincare.
Kudos to you, Cindy, for your researching and sharing 🙂

  12. Great post and timely as I’ve already decided to get a peel for my sun damage/dark spots. I did a series of 3 microneedling treatments to help with lip lines and wrinkles that sit on top of my cheekbones but was disapointed in the results. I’ve now bought my own microneedling device but have yet to take it out for a spin.

    1. Hi Barb

I have really heard mixed reviews about micro-needling as well. Some say it is painful as well. My peel was not painful at all. The only annoying thing is the shedding skin!

  13. Thank you for being so honest and including your pictures. I have very sensitive fair somewhat oily skin. I can’t use Vitamin C serums because of the burn they cause. I always wear a hat when outside as I live at high altitude of 5,300 feet. No not Denver but three hours south and slightly west in Colorado. The sun is intense and can cause serious sunburn without protection. I also love Neutrogena Hydroboost. Your skin responds to that treatment and looks lovely and fresh. It wouldn’t be for me. At 81, I’m fortunate that my skin is holding up. It is good skincare all my life and avoiding the sun. Also Finnish genes!

    1. Hi Sydney

I wish I had taken care of my skin. Sadly I had some acne growing up and guess what the dermatologist recommended? A sunlamp! If I don’t get skin cancer on my face it will be a miracle.

  14. Can I ask the cost of this treatment? Or at least a range? Did you undergo any pre peel sensitivity tests?

    1. Hi Tally
Yes it was either $140 or $150. I am sorry I cannot remember which. I think $140. It is well worth it! No I did not have any pre peel sensitivity tests but my skin is not sensitive and I have had laser treatments before.

  15. crazy….. Are you glad you did it? As an active person you have to take a week or two off, right? like no sun and no sweating?
I mean, you are beautiful to begin with. did you notice a substantial difference in the quality of your skin?

  16. No plans to do a peel, but thanks for keeping it real, detailed, and including pictures. This has to be nothing but very helpful for those considering this treatment.

    1. Hi Dianne
I was very happy. I will do a series again next year. I didn’t expect much to be honest and I was supper happy with the results. I know it is hard to see in pictures. I had a lot of dark pigmentation. What surprised me was the acne scarring improvement. I am getting a laser treatment tomorrow as Kelli says she has better results when she combines the two.

  17. I used to work at a medspa, when clients asked about procedure/recovery I would tell them “it’s like a home remodel, it’s going to look worse before it looks better!”……Thank u for ur honest review.
