Non-Invasive Advanced Skin Treatments for Mature Skin with Aesthetician Amy Amaral

You asked we listened! This is the first in a new monthly series I’ll be sharing all about simple, effective ways to practice self-care over 50. On a recent quick trip to Salinas, I treated myself to a visit with Amy Amaral, owner of Pureskin Aesthetic Salon. I was impressed with the treatment Amy gave me and I was genuinely surprised at the difference I noticed after just one session. It left me so curious that I wanted to interview her about what she did for me and what services she offers other mature clients to maintain healthy, glowing skin. Let’s talk non-invasive advanced skin treatments for mature skin with Aesthetician Amy Amaral.

Amy – tell us a bit about yourself, running your own business, and the driving force motivating you to get into the skincare industry over 20 years ago.

I grew up in Monterey, California, and now live with my husband and three boys in Salinas. I love walking on the beach, hiking, reading (especially historical fiction), my animals, and watching my boys play sports. I have always loved taking care of my skin since I was a little girl. I got the love for makeup and skin products from my grandma! She was from Italy and always taught me the importance of a good skincare routine and to always look my best. I am a people person and love connecting with other women. I opened my salon in October 2001. My mission is to make women feel beautiful from the inside out. My clients are like family to me. My pureskin family.

Non-Invasive Advanced Skin Treatments for Mature Skin with Aesthetician Amy Amaral

You are known for your customized approach to skincare along with advanced treatments. Tell me a bit about what the treatment was that you gave me, and why?

The facial treatment I gave you was a combination of Dermaplaning, HydraFacial, Procell Microchanneling, and LED Light Therapy.

Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that uses a blade to exfoliate the skin by gently scraping off the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz). It leaves the skin feeling smooth, soft, brighter, and glowing. It also helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. Your makeup will go on like butter!!!

HydraFacial is a combination of the power of microdermabrasion and a Vortex-Fusion technology that gives a deep cleansing of the pores, exfoliates the skin, extracts clogged pores, and provides deep hydration.

Procell Microchanneling enhances the cellular activity in the skin by creating thousands of microchannels. A clinically proven growth factor serum that is derived from stem cells is applied to the microchannels. These channels prompt an inflammatory response in the skin to initiate collagen formation. The results from just one Procell Treatment are noticeable and if done in a series there is significant improvement in the skin texture, decreased fine lines & wrinkles, acne scarring, and hyperpigmentation. The overall appearance and rejuvenation of the skin is truly remarkable. The best part is there is NO DOWNTIME!

LED Light Therapy was used to finish your treatment. Red Light Therapy can reduce inflammation, stimulate collagen production, and improve the appearance of wrinkles and scars.

I love to mix these treatments together to get some really great results for clients especially wanting non-invasive procedures.

I’m always getting asked for non-invasive ways to approach aging – and when we chatted in August, you said you have really noticed a trend towards a more natural approach to skincare, and healing the skin from the inside out. Tell us about recent technology you have brought in for your clients and what you might be planning to add to your list of services in the future.

I have noticed many clients not wanting to do Botox or Fillers and are looking for more non-invasive skincare treatments. Many clients are concerned about the toxins or possible unknown side effects from these kinds of treatments. My clients also want to nourish their skin from the inside out. I brought in the Procell Microchanneling Treatment about 2 years ago. This treatment stimulates our own collagen formation and by doing these treatments in a series some of my clients have seen significant decrease in the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, a much smoother texture to the skin, as well as firmer facial tone. Results are evident after just one treatment but really amazing after a series of 6. I have also brought in the BioRePeel Blue and BioRePeel Gold. This TCA peel has amazing technology. It is so gentle on the skin that there is no peeling. BioRePeel benefits include stimulating collagen production, improving skin texture & tone, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars while also hydrating and nourishing the skin. Procell Microchanneling and BioRepeel Blue can be done together for a powerful anti-aging treatment. The BioRepeel Gold treatment targets areas like the back, hands, knees, elbows, & even stretch marks.

I plan to add Microcurrent Treatments next year. There are many benefits to microcurrent technology. It is non-invasive and stimulates collagen and elastin production while reducing wrinkles and fine lines, improves skin tone & elasticity and tightens and lifts the facial muscles. It’s a workout for the facial muscles!! No sagging jowls after this treatment!

What treatments do you offer and what have you seen the most success with for women over 50 and beyond?

I have seen the most success with my Procell Microchannelling Treatment series paired with a customized home skin care routine/products. I believe that the right skin care regimen and products for home care use are just as important as the in-salon treatment.

As you have said, an at-home skincare routine is just as important as monthly treatments and actually helps your clients get better and more longer-lasting results. What brands/products do you carry and why?

I offer the NeoGenesis Skincare and Face Reality Skincare lines.

I love the NeoGenesis skincare line because it uses technology that harnesses the power of adult stem cell-released molecules to awaken your body’s natural regenerative power. The products provide a natural approach to healing skin. I believe that nourishing and healing our skin is one of the key factors to keeping our skin looking its best!

I offer Face Reality products for my clients who struggle with acne. I am a certified Acne Specialist and am able to customize skincare plans for anyone struggling with troublesome breakouts.

There are a million “at-home” devices out there for skincare. Which ones have you tried that you feel are actually worth purchasing?

There are a million at home skincare devices! I recommend the MYSKINBUDDY, the BT-Sculpt, the Time Master Pro, and the OmniLux LED Light Mask. I currently use all of these devices.

The MYSKINBUDDY is a handheld multifunction machine that deep cleans the skin, promotes skincare product penetration, reduces redness, stimulates collagen, and helps to kill acne bacteria.

The BT-Sculpt is a handheld mini microcurrent device that provides facial lifting and toning resulting in more sculpted and toned skin.

The Time Master Pro device is designed to stimulate skin cell regeneration, increase collagen production, tighten and plump the skin, and improve overall complexion.

The OmniLux LED Light Mask uses medical grade LED red light therapy to stimulate collagen production, reduce inflammation, improve skin tone and texture, and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.

You are also a makeup artist with over 20 years of experience. What’s your go-to brand for makeup and why?

Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics is THE BEST MAKEUP EVER!I have been using and selling Jane Iredale for 23 years! While I was in esthetician school they told us to never apply makeup after a facial since all makeup was toxic! I went on a mission to find a makeup brand that was nontoxic. Many makeup brands have toxic ingredients, artificial dyes, and cause acne breakouts. jane iredale is noncomedogenic, allowing the skin to breathe, and provides broad spectrum SPF 20 protection from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The makeup is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, oil and talc free, and contains antioxidants like Vitamin C. It gives a flawless finish with the light diffusing properties of the minerals that minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines. I love giving makeup lessons to my clients to help pick out the right Jane Iredale foundation for their skin type.

What are a few other tips and treatments that you might recommend for women over 50 to keep their skin looking its best from season to season?

I would recommend monthly facial treatments, having a great home skincare routine, getting a good night’s sleep, eating healthy, exercising daily and wearing sunscreen every single day! I would also recommend to live in gratitude, to have a positive mindset, and not sweat the small stuff. Stress will age us faster than anything no matter what kind of treatments we do!

Aesthetician Amy Amaral and family

My wise former Aesthetician Carol (now retired) once said women over 50 don’t need facials, they need treatments. I am so happy to have found Amy. I love that she focuses on effective techniques that refresh, renew, and restore without downtime or harsh procedures. Her approach combines science and artistry to help your skin look healthy, vibrant, and beautifully cared for at every age. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.

  1. You are the bees knees, loved all of it so informative and educating. I will be checking into some of these things. Maybe I can stop Botox and filler also! Thank you so much for all the great information and I know you look beautiful!

  2. This was so fun and informative Cindy! Wish I lived closer to Amy I would go. Good tips. I do think regular care is the best thing we can do and these light procedures are helpful too.
I also think IPL or BBL is worth doing for the broken capillaries and scars and spots.
I agree Jane Iredale products are SO good! I love the pressed powder.

  3. Hi Cindy,
So nice you took time out to care for yourself. The treatments you had sound so good. Amy Amaral sounds like she is a true professional. I look forward to see what you have to say after all the treatments are done. I used to get facials once a month. If I lived in Salinas I would definitely go to Amy. I wonder who she would recommend in the Scottsdale/Phoenix Arizona area.
Thank you for. Sharing Amy with us.

    1. Hi Katherine

I don’t think facials do that much…these advanced treatments are what we need at our age!

  4. Cindy this was great information, thank you. Like others mentioned, notes were taken and now for the research.

  5. I use the Jane Irdale lip stain, it stays where you put it, no feathering into fine lines. I use it alone or as a base coat for different color lipstick. It’s great!

    1. Hi Nancy

I will try it! I have been using the Chanel for years but it is very limited in color choices.

  6. Very informative Cindy thank you so much! We keep seeing material on the net about the Pink Salt Trick and it’s miraculous weight loss results – clearly aimed at woman wanting to improve physical and mental health and look good! And it is endorsed and promoted by Oprah (!) who (perhaos foolishly?) I think of as trustworthy. But this seems to good to be true. I wonder if you have – or would consider – looking into this? It smells like a scam to me but if Oprah is endorsing…..maybe not?

    1. Hi Diana

I looked it up and they used Oprah’s image without her permission. She did not endorse it.

  7. Thank you! I found this post very interesting and informative. I have done none of these procedures, but I need to be more educated about them. There might be a good new procedure for me try at 77. Thanks!

    1. Hi Judie

I have gotten many hydrafacials which I liked but this combo was just what I was hoping for!

  8. Cindy-
This was such an informative article! We all have the same questions & needs at this age. I can’t wait to show this article to my aesthetician!
Have you tried the make-up? That looks interesting also!
    Thanks for the information!

    1. Hi Nancy

Yes I am using the foundation right now. I wasn’t a fan of the mascara but I am super picky about mascara!

  9. Thank you for sharing this Cindy. So often women are reluctant to share the treatments they have. I took notes and will look into this here!
    Have a great week.

  10. Cindy This was really informative! I do like a few fillers for naso-labial lines but the price has really increased. The hand held items are ones to look up! Thank you for this frank discussion and many clients would never admit their sources for facial improvement. I also think sleeping on your face is terrible; I stopped this ages ago after having braces and headgear which made it impossible plus the orthodontist in 1973 told me I would show aging by bad sleep positions . This information came when I was 34 and wasn’t forgotten. Not using straws is another one a later aesthetician talked about as it makes for puckering of the muscles around the mouth. No smoking!! is a given. Thank you, Donnie

    1. Hi Donnie
I have botox three times a year on my frown lines! We will be interviewing Kelly on those types of procedures soon!

  11. I started using some Jane Iredale products. I never thought I would use a powder makeup base, but JI’s loose powder makeup base does not settle into lines or make your skin look drier. It actually leaves a beautiful sheen and feels light on the skin. Plus, it has SPF. Her powder-based products are very finely milled so they go on smoothly. Some other favorite products are her brow pencils, 24 kt gold dust (powder highlighter), and the tubing mascara (looks great on lashes, doesn’t smudge, and removes so easily).

    1. Hi Nancy

I am liking the foundation. My salon carries her products as well. I will give the powder a try as well. I have ordered no makeup makeup in my shade. Will report on that soon!! My daughter loves it.

  12. Loved this interview – wish I lived close enough to visit her. Been using Jane Iredale for over 20 years – the best out there. Have a great day!

    1. Yes I did!! I will be doing a series of these procedures. I think the combination was key! I will give a full report when I am done with the series, but I was very impressed with the results from just one session.
