9 Flattering Ways to Style one Maxi Dress for Curvy Women Over 50
So you bought a maxi dress because it felt effortless, flowy, and right up your alley. But if you’re wearing it the same way every time, you’re missing out on how versatile it can be. The right styling can transform one dress into many completely different looks that work for a Spring wedding, dinner with friends, a beach day, and everything in between. This Chan Luu maxi (that I featured in my Sunday faves) already is that dress. The fabric drapes beautifully, the pattern is lovely but not overwhelming, and the length flatters and the fit doesn’t fight your body. What you add to it in accessories changes everything. Let’s chat about 9 flattering was to style a maxi dress for curvy women over 50 and how to make one fabulous dress work like nine or even more!
As a mature woman I’ve reached a point where if a piece can’t transition between seasons, it doesn’t belong in my closet. I’m absolutely head-over-heels for this Chan Luu maxi dress, so I’m showing you how to layer it for today’s temperatures and strip it back when the weather heats up.

This dress will flatter almost any body shape. The fit and flare style can disguise wide-hips. If there is too much fabric for your body type, belt it with the self belt or one of your favorites.
It is all About the Accessories
If you’ve been following along for a while you know my style philosophy. To me accessories are the soul of an outfit. A well-chosen accessory can completely redefine an outfit.

For warmer weather I will be wearing the dress with a vintage pin that I found on eBay last year, a necklace I have had for years, native american earrings and bracelets, a gigi pip hat and vintage indigo mules from Etsy.

For a look that’s resort ready , I’ve paired this maxi with crochet sandals and a bag from The Sac.
Add a Denim Jacket for an Effortless Look

This combination works because the long coat balances the soft, flowing silhouette of the dress with the clean line of the denim duster.

Opt for a blazer or denim jacket that hits right at the hip; this defines your waist and provides structure to the dress’s natural flow. A crossbody bag with a thick strap provides additional definition. This look would be great with sneakers.
Top it With a Knit

Fake the look of a skirt-and-top combo by throwing an oversized sweater (cotton for Spring) over your dress for a relaxed, layered vibe.
Wear it Over a pair of Pants or a Skirt as a Duster

For an effortless look, treat your maxi dress as a lightweight trench or duster over a pair of pants.

Here I styled the dress over the great BR skirt, favorite and Michael Stars tee with a favorite necklace given to me by my daughter.
Belt It

Here I belted the dress with a wide braided belt, loafers and bag for a work or lunch with the girls look.

For a more transitional look I styled the dress with my vintage concho belt, boots, bag and hat.

The options are endless with a dress like this (it has a self belt that I didn’t find until after I created this post). This time of year you coul also style it with a long cardigan, a leather jacket or layer a turtleneck underneath. When the temperatures begin to warm pair it with flip flops, dress it up for a summer wedding with a block heeled sandals and a wrap, self belt it over a pair of linen pants, or wear it to the resort as a coverup. This dresses only issue is it is one size. It might overwhelm a petite figure. I am 5’4 and the length is perfect on me. It would serve as a midi on someone tall.

I love love love this dress. Gorgeous.
Trying to figure out why I need it. It would be too lightweight to wear around here in the winter and too warm for our hot humid summers, but for spring and fall – it can’t be beat.
LOVE IT in all the ways you showed it. I forget about the duster idea. So chic.
Thanks Pal-That dress would be gorgeous on you my friend. I am not one for patterns but this dress is so good!!
I hate to be “Debbie Downer” but two years ago (I was 69 at the time) I was wearing a lovely long dress and on my way to a party. Somehow the hem of the dress caught my shoe heel, and down I went. Hours later in the ER I have a foot that was broken in three places. When the doctor saw my dress, he shook his head. “You don’t know how many falls are caused by long dresses.”
I learned my lesson. I will wear a skirt mid length but avoid extra full skirts. Just something to think about as we get older and falls aren’t as easy to come back from as they used to be.
Hi Becky
Oh dear that is terrible and a sad reminder!!
Looks great! Also I appreciate the backgrounds you are choosing as I so miss that area. Having grown up in summers in Morro Bay and visiting the surrounding towns which were very small then, it is lovely to see still. the picture of you and your dog along the beach near ‘the rock’ was so nostalgic! Thank you.
Hi Donnie
There is a dog beach in Cayucos which means we often eat lunch either at Cayucos or Morro Bay!
My absolute favorite type of post that you do. Such wonderful suggestions, and you are fabulous in each of the looks!
Thank you so much Judy! I enjoy doing these posts as well.

Mary Ann you always look so darling in maxi’s. Who says petites can’t wear maxis! You are living proof!
What is the brand of the denim duster?
Thank you,
Vickie B.
Hi Vicki
It is Rollas but it is no longer available. That is why I linked to the only one I could find on Poshmark or eBay.
Such great inspiration! I think my favs are the jean jacket over it and the dress over the skirt & top. All are dynamic and fun!
Hi Kelli
I had Erbium laser yesterday and could not pose in the denim jacket as my face was too red! That is always a favorite look for me, and I love that Banana Republic skirt. It is so versatile!
Thank you, Cindy. I have several maxi dresses and I am always looking for more ways to style it. Three more ideas as a result of your post!
Hi Jenny
We just have to think outside the box sometimes, don’t we? Thanks for weighing in!
OMG! What great ideas you always have! I love wearing fun bold accessories and thanks to you I feel like I truly can. Your outfits are so fun and inspiring as usual!
Hi Sandi
You ladies always have me thinking outside the box! I get in ruts as well. Sometimes I need to refer back to my own post in order to be more creative with my own looks! I just hate buying anything unless I know I can wear it multiple ways. If I can’t back it goes!
Such a fun post! It’s hard to pick a favorite way you styled it but I think mine are the one where you have it open over tan pants and the one with you wearing boots and the hat. I love it all and another good reminder of quality over quantity.
Hi Laura
I love the idea of wearing it over pants as well. I think white linen or khaki pants would be fun this summer. You can’t ever go wrong with boots and a hat! Thanks for your kind words!
