How to Feel Good, Eat Well & Enjoy Life with Humor After 60

It’s time to join Mary Ann and Annie for thoughts on how to nourish and nurture that “well-seasoned” body of yours while keeping the kitchen fun.Let’s chat about how to feel good, eat well & enjoy life with humor after 60, and of course some pretty interiors because it is Sunday.

The Correspondent

I know I am late to the party, but one of my “goals” for the new year is to read (or listen) more that isn’t work related. I am really enjoying The Correspondent. Have you read it and did you enjoy it?

The unusual choice of the light terra cotta cabinetry, curtains, and sofas with the blue have my heart in this lovely sitting room.

The Kitchn Caesar Roasted Brussel Sprouts

If you grew up in the Midwest dreading the mushy, tasteless Brussels sprouts of your childhood, give them another chance by roasting or grilling them. They are a favorite in our house.

I love almost any inarnation of roasted brussel sprouts, this recipe from the kithn is one of our favorites.

Casual Activewear that you can be Seen In

Friday’s activewear post definitely got people talking! (Catch up here and join the discussion if you missed it). We dove deep into the ‘activewear in public’ debate, and today I’m sharing three ways to level up the look. Whether you’re heading to après-ski drinks or just tackling errands after a Pilates class, these outfits prove you can be comfortable without looking sloppy. Consider throwing on a great scarf or swapping out your gym bag for an attractive tote to make your look more presentable!

This look has a mix of high and low. I ordered the Spanx half zip (on sale), and the Spanx pants (also on sale). The Varley sherpa jacket is a splurge as is the bag. My daughter loves the Sorel’s for “apres ski”.

This outfit is also a mix of high and low. The Lands End bag is a great buy, and a favorite of mine for weekend trips. The Spanx pants, and top. are on order. I am coveting the new Vionic sneaks, and the Varley (more of a splurge) quilted jacket. Gap Factory has a great looking quilted jacket for much less here that also comes in many other pretty colors. For those of you skeptics about wearing activewear in public. Throw on a scarf and dress it up a bit.

This Varley coat , scarf, and leggings are more of a splurge. The same Spanx top is on sale, the bag is from Calpak, and the Sorel boots are super comfy. Asos has a similar coat here for much less. Old navy has similar olive green leggings here.

Raise your Hand if you Love Stanley Tucci

Are you following Stanley Tucci? There is something so compelling about him. How he manages to be both endearing and brutally honest at the same time is part of his charm. What’s not to love?” You will enjoy this article in the Guardian, on love grief and pasta if you are a fan of “the Tooch”. You can find all of Stanley’s books here on Amazon. Do you have a fave?

You asked for It

Several people in our annual survey asked for more Summer and Scout! We just returned from a quick trip to return Summer’s buddy Deuce, whom we babysat while they were skiing. We enjoyed seeing Summer’s basketball team play (they are undefeated).

  1. Cindy, the Correspondent was one of my favorite books that I read last year. And I LOVE OHO Interiors and Stanley Tucchi. As for Brussel sprouts, that is a big thumbs down from me, I do not like them at all. And active wear… another discussion. I for one can not figure out how this is the new uniform for travel, outings, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I wear it around my house, at the gym and will run into a store but I do not wear it to the movies, out to dinner, et.
    Have a wonderful week.

    1. Hi Eliz

I agree. I do not wear activewear out to dinner or anywhere other than on errands. I do like some of the dressed up versions for travel!! Particularly Frank and Eileen!!

  2. This is such a great newsletter, filled with great articles and pictures. Thank you, Cindy

  3. Over autumn and winter, I live in active wear, mainly because I walk 10 kms a day and my Brooks shoes do not lend themselves to other styles of clothing. Generally, I look pretty bad, but during summer tend to doody myself up a bit more when out and about. Haven’t read the Correspondent, because I generally read non Fiction books and am currently reading the biography of Sister (Army Lt) Vivian Bullwinkle (who survived being machine gunned by the Japanese in World War Two)and was then a POW until 1945. Your granddaughter is ever so cute – what a great smile she has, must take after her grandmother.

    1. Hi Susan

My husband only reads non-fiction as well. I like a mix. I will look into the bio of Sister Vivian Bullwinkle!! Summer is so positive and full of life. I hope she never loses that!!

      1. Hi Cindy. Not sure if you ever watched the movie, Paradise Road. It was loosely based on the book, White Coolies, written by Betty Jeffrey, another Australian Army Nurse imprisoned with Vivian Bullwinkle.

          1. If you don’t mind old movies (1997), it is entertaining and the characters in the movie were from Betty Jeffrey’s book. Glen Close and Cate Blanchett are in it. Gives us an insight to human nature, both good and bad under terrible conditions.

  4. Loved The Correspondent. Wonderful book. I wonder if it was because I listened to it on Audible. But loved it. Also appreciate your take on wearing activewear. I think I need to upgrade mine. I guess trip to Athletica.
Always appreciate your blogs. Such good stuff. Plus I agree. More Scout and Summer.

  5. Hi Cindy,
    Happy New Year!
Lovely picture of Summer and her mate! I watch Stanley Tucci’s Italy series at least twice over.
    Have a good week.

  6. I’m reading “The Correspondent” now. I am a member of a new book club and this is our maiden book. I’m really enjoying it. It reminds me of another book I read some years ago, “A Woman of Independent Means,” by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey. It, too, is a story told through letter-writing and is very good. Happy new year and happy reading!

    1. Hi Mary

OMG I agree similar to a woman of indepentent means…I had forgotten about it!!

  7. I’m totally on board with your take on activewear, but I really wish I could find more longer tops that completely cover the bum! Living near Houston, it’s usually too warm for layers. Athleta used to carry some, but now they seem to be few and far between. Please keep us updated if you find anything good!

  8. Hi Cindy,
I have the Correspondent on my long list of books to read. I have HOPE , Jane Goodall she will always be one of my most respected and admired people. I was fortunate to see her in person many years ago at an Arizona Lecture Series in Tempe, AZ Also purchased tickets to see her on Zoom about two years ago. HIOE is a wonderful book, it’s sitting on my bed to finish. Also reading Let Them, Mel Robbin’s. I just don’t carve out enough time to read.
I read Stanley Tucci article you shared. I like him, he’s direct and very honest. Had not had an easy life, his cancer and his beautiful first wife. Felicity Jones is fabulous.
I will read the article on health. I need to do more exercise, with my limitations.
Wonderful news about Summer and Jenna that their basketball team is undefeated. They are both so cute, love their smiles.
The Varley pretty jacket is sold out. The Gap one I think would be too much weight on up body. The Varley is beautiful.
The year is not starting out well, heart broken over Renee Nicole Good life being taken by gun violence. The world unfortunately is looking grim, and getting grimmer.
    Have a good week.

    1. Hi Katherine

You have such a generous heart. We love you!! I don’t read as much as I should either. I work too much on this blog! Trying to live a more rounded life!

  9. I just finished The Correspondent and was so sorry when I finished it. I fell in love with Sybil…..

  10. I enjoyed the post and thanks for sharing the article on Stanley Tucci. I want to read his books. Love the black and green fashions.

  11. Good morning, Cindy! I always love the articles you find on fitness and aging. Isn’t it funny that we are both reading that book at the same time? Or I should say listening…I rarely read anymore! But I did listen to 14 books last year.
    Adore Stanley Tucci!
    xx
    Annie

  12. Love the “fits”…I am like you, I live in sweats and thermal leggings in the winter, and in capri leggings and baggy shirtdresses in the spring and summer.
My legs don’t allow for shorts and skirts too much, and when it is 30º out, jeans are not warm enough here.
So I am always looking for ways to make the situation look more sporty.
Trying to make myself wear a cute coat, regardless of what’s under it! 🤣

    1. Hi Gray

I am wearing my fleece lined leggintgs here too! It is going to warm up this week but it has been freezing!! I wear “sporty” clothes 90% of the time!!

  13. I found The Correspondent slow and boring and quit about 50 pages in. I just don’t get the popularity of that book.

  14. Curious as to what is going on with your blog? I am not able to view it now without disabling my ad blocker, and then there are so many ads that I can barely see what you are actually posting. Did you make this change or do I have some virus?
