There’s a particular morning every September when I open my closet, see the same rotation of summer linen, and feel a mix of dread mixed with excitement. Fall is coming, and I have nothing to wear. Of course that’s not remotely true. I have plenty to wear. What I actually want are a few new pieces that make the whole collection feel current again, which is exactly what Kim and I set out to find for this year’s edition of our Signature Style Series wish list. Some of what follows I already own and I’m simply falling back in love with. The rest is still on my screen, in a cart, or simply waiting for me to click buy.
Before you buy anything new for your wardrobe , take a lap through your own closet first. That great blazer you have owned for years, the boots you forgot you owned, the scarf still folded in a drawer, these are the beginnings of your collected look, built up piece by piece rather than bought all at once for one season. A Statement Jacket or Coat
I’m always drawn to a statement jacket, whether it’s a vintage-inspired pattern, a bold pop of color, or one with details interesting enough to carry the whole outfit.
I purchased this farm rio jacket this season and I love it!! The Miramar jeans are on sale here, and oh so comfy!!
My niece gifted me this jacket when my sister passed away. I think of her every time I wear it. It is a favorite.

A Great Cashmere Sweater
A lightweight cashmere sweater in camel, charcoal, black or navy that you can wear often with many separates always works. I am on the hunt for a couple in pretty shades of chartreuse, deep brown or olive.
Last year I invested in this ALC sweater in two colors. The quality is excellent (it should be) and I wore them to death. There was barely any pilling which is unusual even for the more expensive options. I am on the hunt for a couple new ones of the same quality this season.

The Great White Shirt
Most of us already have a staple white button down. How about a couple of blouses with interesting details to wear with blazers, jackets, jeans or skirts?

Raise your hand if you’re happy the chunky lug sole loafer is finally making room for something sleeker. I still adore my velvet Birdies, but there’s a great new crop of slim loafers worth adding to the rotation.

I’ve always loved suede, and it’s back in a big way this season, which means there’s no shortage of options.

A Great Scarf or Wrap
For simple cashmere wraps the J Crew pashmina, and the Charleston travel wrap from Mersea are hard to beat. What I am adding this year are scarves with an iteresting pattern to add interest to my solid separates.

A Blazer or Jacket with Interesting Details
I am thinking of something that would elevate a pair of jeans for wine tasting, tailgaiting, or dinner. This Rag and Bone jacket is a favorite (no longer available) but Veronica Beard has a very similar one in my favorite green that I am coveting here.

As is often the case the case, your first photo was compelling. The colors: Chartreuse! Plum! Chocolate!
And reading your take on trends I am reminded to shop my closet. I have at least 6 suede items, all in good condition and not worn much in recent years. 3 jackets, 2 skirts, 1 pair of pants. We are empty nesters in a nearly 4000 sq ft home, plenty of closets to store my things (and I do weed out and donate twice a year) but it also means I do not have everything within view in my main (bedroom) closet. Time for another search and rescue (and seasonal purge)!

Cindy great idea gathering by category. Love all of it! The countryside jacket is so you and perfect with the Miramar jeans. I have to get those this year. Been on my list and so many fans of these sweat jeans. They look wonderful on you. I agree glad the loafers are getting slimmer. I want all the scarves too.

Check out a English company called Plumo. I have been following their beautiful things for a while now on instagram and on the web and this year I took the plunge and bought a sweater. Gorgeous clothes and I love the aesthetic. The latest Fall campaign was shot in Scotland think beautiful natural colorways and moody “looks”. I will be visiting the store when I am in London in November! Joy!!

Idea for a post: hair styles over 60/70. Not just haircare, actual styles for older, possibly thinning hair. Easy updos, essential hair accessories, alternatives to baseball caps, etc. I have the clothing thing down, but my hair is causing me to, well, pull out my hair!

Cindy, this is quite the spread!! Amazing detail and suggestions. It will take some time to digest. But I agree that one should go through what you have first and then find a few things needing replacement or updating. Received the Parker Thatch leopard bag and it’s fabulous. But I need to rethink and exchange the long strap I ordered. Now that I see how it attaches. I’m so happy you helped me.

You are so chic but I cannot wear the color palette that you wear and show. I wonder if you could occasionally include other color options like pastels, greys, sky blues, etc. I try to extrapolate but find it challenging.

Thank you for your posts. I always enjoy reading them and looking at the photos. I’m so glad you mentioned Quince. I’ve seen ads but didn’t know anything about the company. I got burned last year by a company that turned out to have beautiful pictures, but the product I bought was hideous in person. Trying to get a refund afterward was a nightmare.

I wear an 8 and an 8 fits me perfect. The loafers can run a bit small.
Well…my fall list includes a white shirt, black tunic and has just grown after reading this. I’ve had a similar loafer (in patent leather) and I get compliments on them every time I wear them (comfy too). Your turquoise necklace is stunning. I look forward to this series with you and Kim.
Got the Born lug sole loafers in cordovan. Takes me back to my middle school Weejuns. Visited the Santo Domingo Pueblo art show for some beautiful jewelry. Have a hand me down leather moto from a friend so looks like I am on point for fall! Thank you so much for the guidance and inspiration.

Every time I click on Northern California Style’s website, I get a “Not Secure” notice when the website comes up. I don’t get this notice for any other website, and being very timid online, I immediately close the website. I’m not sure what is going on, but I have to wonder if I am the only one that this happens to. I use Microsoft Edge.

I use chrome and never get the not secure warning. Maybe try safari or chrome. Kim’s website has been around for a long time and I assure you she doesn’t have any malware on it. Her whole family is in the tech industry!

Lovely post thank you. That Quince jacket is tempting me and l love those Artemis mules ….one day !! I googled flights to London last night as l love going in November and walking in my favorite parks with family, feeling the cold and walking through the leaves , crisp morning air. Cindy excellent post. So many pretty things you have to style your looks. I need more cool necklaces like you. My favorite look may be the wraps you do on top like the taupe one! Very chic. That Rag & Bone jacket is great. I just bought a similar one from them and still have the tag on it.. Deciding whether to keep or not. .. I think these jackets are worth the investment for the years we wear them!
By the way, I bought the Madewell lug soul loafer last year and weirdly it looks identical to the Vionic. It’s super comfy. I agree we all need a few cool white shirts too.

I love those madewell loafers. They look just like the vionic. I however have to get a wide because of the bunion so it’s Vionic for me! I know what you mean about leaving the tags on. I love that rag and bone jacket. There is just something about it! What size did you get by the way. I bet you got the Slade. I love that one as well. You keep me on my toes are you kidding!!??
Your Quince sweater links do not go to the correct item except for the batwing. So maybe you can fix those. I am not a fan of lug soles with size 10 feet but do love buying via Quince.

I am shopping my closet for the majority of my wardrobe this year. I have so many lovely pieces that need to be worn. That being said, I did purchase a pair of black leather riding boots. A black Lady Jacket, a denim dress and the a houndstooth skirt. I want a grey Heather cashmere sweater to go with my grey cropped leg pants. I am also on the look out for red items

I highly recommend the Quince sweaters. I just received mine yesterday. I will be sharing a gray one tomorrow! Riding boots are always classic. Mine got tossed somehow in the first move. I had them for years! You can’t go wrong with denim dress either. I will keep my eye open for some good red pieces. I love red too!!
Love your color choices, fibrant and classy. I too like Quince for their merino wool and organic cotton. Talbots can have great sales on their cashmere as well. I look forward to your newsletter each week, and your fav fives!!
