Chic Maxi Looks for Curvy Women Over 60 (What Actually Works)
I am joining my pals Classic Casual Home and Annie from Most Lovely Things for some summer fashion fun. Can a shorter, curvy woman wear a maxi dress after 60? She can, and she can look fantastic in one. I know because I am that woman, and I have been figuring this one out for a few years.
I’m 5’4″, curvy (substantial bust and hips, with what I charitably call a waist in between), and I have worn every version of this silhouette , the flattering ones and the ones that made me look like I was being swallowed by fabric. This post is the result of all that field research! I penned this post a few years ago and it needed a rewrite. Let’ take a look at chic maxi looks for curvy women over 60 (what actually works) shall we?
What Changes About Dressing a Curvy Figure in Your 60s
In your 50s, the guidance around maxi dresses tends to be about siple proportion ,what elongates, what doesn’t. By your 60s, a few other considerations come into the conversation:
- Arms. More of us are covering them, which changes how a sleeveless maxi functions. A lightweight layer or a dress with a flattering sleeve suddenly matters.
- Comfort in heat. I am a big natural fabric fan, linen, cotton, and lightweight gauze are not optional they are essential! Polyester in summer is simply not worth it.
- The waist question. Bodies shift. Some of us have kept our waist definition; some of us haven’t. The styling moves that work depend enormously on which category you’re in.
- Confidence. This one actually gets easier. By 60, most of us care less about whether we’re doing it “right” and more about whether we feel good. That’s a genuine advantage rock it.
How to Choose a Maxi or Midi If You Are Curvy and Over 60
Before the looks, a few principles I keep coming back to:
- Look for an empire waist, a defined waistline, or a silhouette you can belt. Avoid an oversized sea of unbroken fabric.
- Vertical lines and solid colors are your friend. Small prints can work; large prints can overwhelm.
- Fit and flare flatters. Straight columns in a stiff fabric do not.
- The hem should graze the ankle, not pool at your feet, and not hit mid-calf. Both of those are harder proportions to pull off. The ankle is the sweet spot.
- A maxi skirt with a blouse tied at the waist is often more flattering than a maxi dress. It gives you control over where the waist breaks.
- If your arms are a concern, a jacket, wrap, or linen scarf tied at the shoulder does double duty as styling and coverage.
HOW TO CHOOSE MAXI AND MIDIS IF YOU ARE MATURE AND CURVY
Look for maxi or midI dresses that have either an empire waist or fitted waistline. Avoid ones with an over abundance of fabric. Vertical lines and solid colors are your best friend. If you like prints go small. Dresses and skirts that fit and flare flatter. Try looks that accentuate your waist. Don’t let the dress or skirt pool at your feet. It is more attractive if it just grazes the ankle or hits above.
The Black T-Shirt Maxi — Casual Done Right
1. The Black T-Shirt Maxi — Casual Done Right
I love a casual t-shirt dress in summer and keep at least one in rotation. The key for a curvy figure is fit through the top: slim through the bodice, with an A-line shape from the waist down. This one from Tuckernuck is exactly that. The fabric is soft, and substantial without being to heavy. Sandals or sneakers work here because the dress is casual-intentional, not trying to be something it isn’t.

2. The Midi Dress With a Fitted Layer
A sleeveless midi can absolutely work if you add structure over it. This look with my Cara Brown Designs jacket is one I’ve repeated multiple times, the jacket is fitted, it nips in at the waist, and it makes the whole silhouette intentional rather than floaty. I’m not usually a sneakers-with-dresses person, but with this particular combination it works. A bright colored shawl also will define the waist. This dress is a longtime favorite and no longer available but I have linked one very similar below.

3. Ethnic-Inspired Midi
This ethnic inspired number from Mersea embroidered with vines, flowers and birds has just the right amount of pattern and fabric so it doesn’t overwhelm the figure. If you follow me on Instagram

5. My Signature Maxi Look
f you’ve followed this blog for more than five minutes, you’ve seen me in this silhouette. A maxi or midi skirt with a shirt or linen blouse tied at the waist is the formula that works best on my body consistently, and reliably. It lets me define my waist exactly where I want to, control the proportion of the top, and still have the length and coverage I prefer. The CP Shades Lily skirt is a longtime favorite of mine. I love it with a linen shirt tied at the waist. Sadly they have gone out of business. I own this skirt (I think) in six colors. It is the most flattering maxi silhouette on the planet. You can snag some on eBay here, and Poshmark here. I have also linked some similar options below.

7. The V-Neck Linen Midi
V-necks elongate and draw the eye downward, which is exactly what you want in a longer silhouette on a curvy body. This linen dress has the 3/4 sleeve length I find most flattering on me. The pop of color creates interest without adding pattern. I picked this dress up in France but it is available online.

9. Everyone Needs a Perfect White Dress — The Reliable One
I grabbed this dress when we were in SF for a private shopping event. It is beautifully made and fully lined it can be worn as I have or belted. It is one of the prettiest dresses I have ever owned. It could be dressed up with dressy sandals or casually as I have styled it here with simple sandals.

10. The Leopard Midi Dress that can Span the Seasons
I adore this leopard midi from Natalie Martin. It is the only dress I took to France. It doesn’t wrinkle, and it takes up very little space in your suitcase. You can wear it now with sandals or wear it later in the fall with booties. I threw my Frank and Eileen sweater over it at night in Paris.

What I Would Skip
- Too much fabric without shape. If the dress has no waistline and no structure, it will add visual weight rather than skim it.
- Large, busy prints. Small prints work; large prints overwhelm a curvy frame and create a lot of visual noise.
- Midi lengths that hit mid-calf. This is the hardest proportion to carry off, it can shorten the leg and widen the silhouette. Aim for ankle or just above. If you have big calves (Ido) it hits at the widest most unflattering point.
- Sleeveless styles on their own, if arms are a concern. They work beautifully with a layer; alone, they require confidence in that area.
- Polyester and rayon in warm weather. Natural fabrics breathe; synthetics don’t. This matters more at 60 than it did at 40.
The Bottom Line
Don’t let anyone tell you that a maxi or midi dress or skirt is not an age-inappropriate choice at 60. It is, in fact, one of the most flattering silhouettes available to us because it provides coverage, movement, and length that works for so many body types. The key is finding the right proportion for your specific frame, and then wearing it like you meant it.
I’d love to know: is a maxi or midi part of your summer rotation? What works on your body, and what doesn’t? Let’s start the conversation in the comments. I just returned from a fun trip to Kansas City. I will share all about that on my Sunday favorites!
And don’t forget to visit Mary Ann at Classic Casual Home and Annie at Most Lovely Things.

Cindy, like you I am short with definite curves, and I like both a flowy dress as well as one that defines my shape without hugging it. Recently back from the UK and more specifically Scotland , I sought out my favourite brands in Edinburgh, Glasgow and surprisingly Oban, on the west coast prior to a cruise around Mull. White Stuff has soft, colourful , easily packed dresses that show off a bust by defining a higher waist, but have soft lines over the hips and bottom. All this with pockets! That line is available in a boutique nearby me here.
Seasalt of Cornwall has undergone a change and I picked up one of their dresses too. Sizing in UK is different so it takes getting used to. Don’t panic over the number! I look for colours that suit me, as you do. I don’t stress too much about the length…just covering my ‘road map’ legs is my plan. I came home to realize that a few of my soft LLBean cardigans went with these new dresses. I feel confident, comfortable and pretty …that’s the objective after all.
Hi Cath
Confidence is key, isn’t it? Your trip sounds absolutely wonderful. You are such an inspiration, and soon everyone will know why!!
Thank you for this frank discussion. Bodies seem to shift almost overnight. I have just decided that ‘summer dressing’ may last longer due to climate changes these days. I have reviewed the part of my closet that is in that category and appreciate your suggestions! I have decided initially on another pair of J Crew linen drawstring pants that this year are coming in more colors after purchasing two years ago a pair of white and black ones. Some places are not air-conditioned and others are too cold so they are also offering light summer sweater tops which may need to be added. Love you style!
Hi Donnie
I think you are correct about summer lasting longer! love those pants from J Crew. They are timeless!
Cindy, I so enjoyed meeting you while you were visiting KC. Do hope you will be able to return to our great city sometime. This is another great post as I am trying to incorporate some skirts and dresses in my wardrobe. Thanks for the delightful “chat”. Kaye
Hi Kaye
It was wonderful meeting you ! Thank you so much for stopping in to meet me!
Good morning, Cindy,
Loving to wear midi dresses and skirts, your blog inspires so many ideas. I have all the pieces for your charming blue and white with the red bandana tied at an angle in my closet. They’ll be coming out this weekend for our monthly “Saturday Supper club”. Eyelet is a favorite so the Jacky dress is on my list and I best order it soon before your bloggers snatch it up. It would be very helpful to know what size you are wearing.
Thanking you with hugs,
Diney
Hi Diney
I am wearing a 6 and that dress is absolutely fabulous! I don’t say that very often. It is beautifully made!!
Thank you so much!!! I’m on my way to order it!
Hugs, Diney
You are going to love it! It is honestly my best purchase this summer!
It just happened again, Cindy. My post disappeared when I put in my e-mail address prior to sending. So frustrating… after all… I cannot “share my wisdom” !
Another post a few days ago did the same disappearing act. Sigh ….
I might give it another go later on.
Hi Cath
I cannot figure that out!! Unfortunately I have to have my comments monitored because of all the spam, so sometimes they have to wait for approval. This one comes up as if you have never commented which is weird. Hence it requires approval.I don’t understand that.
Hi Cindy, You may be short and I’m sure you have decent length in your legs since the midi clothing looks very nice on you! I’m not curvy but I’ve never been able to wear midi clothing with my short legs. I’ve tried many times to no avail.
Hi Chris
I am very long waisted with short legs. If a midi hits me in the wrong place (the widest part of the calf) it is not flattering on me. You know best what suits you. Wear what you love and feel confident in!!
Hi Cindy, I’m also 5’4” and frequently wear maxi length dresses and skirts. I love throwing on a fun dress to entertain guests – it makes me feel elegant and put together – and as you say – can cover up some 70 something features! 🤣 Going out in a long dress with a great hat, pair of shades and a fun bag is the perfect look. Love all your ideas in this post. Anna in Arizona 🥰
Hi Anna
I couldn’t agree more-nothing better than a great hat, bag, sandals & shades! Cooler in our hot weather as well!!
Cindy! I love a maxi, although most are midis on me, but I love the look. The skirt, shirt, and that origami fold-up tote from Mersea are gorgeous. You look stunning!
xo
Hi Annie
Thank you! That fold up bag is great for travel!! Wish I had it in France! Packs completely flat!
Hi Annie
You and I have the opposite issue! Thank you for the sweet comment!
I found an attractive looking dress in the latest Talbots catalog. They call it a Kaftan and it’s part of a new collection called blue Hawaii. As much as I like it, I really don’t want to pay the price. Because of this style, I went down a rabbit hole, looking up caftans on the internet and found many. Some were called moo moos which made me laugh over the spelling (muumuu). Your Mersea dress is very pretty and quite different from what I think of as their usual styles, but again pricey!
Hi Wren
I will check out Talbot’s latest. I just throw those catalogs away I get so many of them. I will look them up on the internet. You would be able to find many good options on Etsy as well. The Mersea dress is made beautifully and fits like a dream but I understand everything is soooo expensive now!
Hi Cindy,
Being petite, I find so many dresses and skirts are maxi length on me and I don’t mind it at all.In fact in hot weather they often cool me down. Lovely post!
Hi Francesca
Most maxis are too long on me. I go for a midi unless I alter! So many have the beautiful detailing on the hems now so they are hard to alter unless they offer a petite. Almost all of the options I featured are midis-maxi on me.
I saw you in the Mersea store yesterday. You were heading out as I came in . All my favorite things in one place. You are a petite person and your style is huge! A lovely event.
Hi Cathie
I am so sorry I didn’t get to meet you! You should have pulled me aside!! It certainly was a fun event!!
I’m with you 100% about maxis and being short…I think they can elongate you. That Mersea embroidered dress is so pretty.
Hi Mary Ann
You are living proof of how good a maxi (or mid in our case) can look fabulous on a petite person!!
Hello and thank you for posting such beautiful ensembles. I just discovered your site this afternoon. My sister and I will be traveling to Italy and France next May and are looking to maximize our “looks” with a minimum of pieces. You’ve successfully done that with a few of these. If you’re really considered “curvy”, you’ve hidden it well. Smaller hips but larger waist and top is what we are searching to “disguise”. Any and all help would be appreciate..thank you. (We love your style).
Hi Debbie
I am needing the tummy concealed these days as well!
Love all your looks, but did I miss something? Where is Martha Steward (I’m a fan)?
Hi Eileen
Here is the link that was in my most recent post https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/martha-stewart-womens-empowerment-aging-1203472556/
Enjoy!!
Love all the looks but are these this year’s shopables? Are they from years past? Hope not cause they are so stylish.
Nice clothes … but where’s the “curvy” models? These women are not overweight or a true representation of plus size.
Hi Sue
I don’t think curvy necessarily means you are a plus size, but a body type. You can purchase curvy jeans in all sizes. I believe you could be a plus size and not qualify as curvy, but yet a pear or an apple. Correct me if I am wrong! I am no expert. I have a curvy shape which means I have a large chest and butt.
Love all of these dress on you Cindy! I personally love dresses and wear them all of the time. You are right you have to find the ones that work with your shape and body.
Have a great week!
Hi Elizabeth
I wish I had your cute figure, I could wear a lot more!
Cindy I just love your look ! You always look amazing !
I love the black 3/4 sleeve tee shirt dress! I looked at the web site that you provided- is that the brand or the shop where you purchased it. All of your selections are great!
Hi Ann
Yes if you contact Jacque at Roux I am sure she can get one for you. I am wearing a small.
Pretty looks Cindy! I actually loved the Zara on you. I thought your advice is great here.
I am short waisted with a low bust line . I find it hard to find a waistline that works. You say you are curvy, but I think you are very slender and look great in everything!
Fun posts and many great accessories too!
x Kim
Hi Kim
I am curvy trust me! I am not at all slender. I just wear clothes that make me look thinner (most of the time). You look so cute in dresses above the knee. You are so lucky you can wear them!
I love the different ways you put these looks together. I think the patterned, ruffled skirt is super cute on you. Denim jackets never go out of style. Thanks for all the styling ideas.
Hi Diane
I like that skirt because the design is subtle and it is a flattering shape. You are welcome! Thanks for reading!
You look beautiful in all your selections, but the citron dress looks definitely very special on you. I personally love maxi dresses and appreciate how they cover some of our less flattering parts, if we look throughout the times. That’s what women wore mostly.
Hi Liana
I agree…they can hide a multitude of sins if worn properly!
Looking good in the maxi looks. The citron with the turquoise is my favorite but I like them all.
Hi Linda
Thank you so nuch! I like the combination of the citron & turquoise as well.
The lime green with turquoise look is beyond beautiful! You have shown me that I too can enjoy the boho look with maxi skirt (cp shades) and linen blouse with tied waist. Love it! Many thanks!
Hi Constance
I hope they never quit making that skirt. It is a good one!
The citron with the turquoise hits it out of the park! I also love the white blouse with a maxi… going to copy that! This was fun, as always!
Hi Mary Ann
You look so much better in pattern and maxi dresses than I and you are shorter! You show petites they can wear whatever they want.
Love, love, love all the outfits — you have such a great sense of style, and lucky me, I am also short and have a similar body type to you, so I am hoping I look as good when I attempt to duplicate your looks with items from my closet. I also love that you show favourite pieces in various ways over time — makes the whole process seem very realistic.
Hi Lisa
I don’t just buy a bunch of stuff to sell. I am sometimes criticized for that, but I believe we should buy things we can wear over and over again in different ways.
Exactly! Very important.
Cindy! You really do know how to rock a maxi skirt or dress! I love every look! I agree with you that big patterns can overwhelm,…it’s the same when you’re tall..,it’s A LOT of pattern!!
I love how you wear a crisp white shirt with a maxi! It could be formal or beachy!!
It was fun doing this post today!!
Xx
~ Hi Cindy H. Just wanted to say that you always look elegant, polished and stylish. Your personal style is inspirational, esp. your infectious smile! ~
I do love all these styles, in theory – and you’ve hit the nail on the head with the ‘best in show’ for certain body types…I prefer the natural fibers that can be laundered at home, no iron, easy. I prefer a knee-length dress for every day, but the longer ones look so elegant and perfect for traveling! Well done, Cindy!!
Loving all the dresses/shirts on you! You are only 5’4″ but perfectly proportioned – lucky you!
I am on the hunt for a dress or two for a couple of Autumn weddings. Thank you for sharing these outfits and inspiring.
I ran into Wren yesterday – serendipity, for sure. A visit in the future, for sure.
Love your minimalist style and the way you accessorize.. Those bracelets 💕I’m 5’3”, inverted triangle body shape.. My challenge is finding dresses that are slimmer cut on the bottom. Also opposite of you, I cover my legs because they are thin. I find fabric quality and drape makes all the difference. Thanks for all the ideas.
You have such beautiful style — love! I do smile to myself, though, that you refer to yourself as curvy. I guess it reinforces what I’ve found manufacturers mean by “curvy fit” — a classic hourglass, perfect for fashion, with small waist and larger bust and hips. Your recommendations are ideal for that hourglass shape.
I am tall, but I am always careful with these long print dresses. I always ask myself, am I wearing this dress or is it wearing me?
Love your style, Cindy. I am built differently with different assets and challenges, but do my best to adapt the looks to work for me, as I’m guessing many of your readers do. Any tips on minimizing or enhancing various body issues are appreciated. Thanks for the great inspiration!
I have the J.Jill linen dress in henna and pale yellow from last year and just go the orange from this year. I love these dresses as you can wear as a dress or a duster with slacks. Great linen and great colors !
So easy and elegant all at the same time.
