What do Beach Houses, Rose Gardens, and a Puppy Have in Common

What do beach houses, rose gardens, and a puppy have in common? Not much, but it’s Sunday and I am joining my friends Annie and Mary Ann for our Sunday favorites.

David Austin Roses on Instagram

The David Austin roses that we planted last year are really filling out and look like they are going to be beautiful. I will keep you posted on their progress. In the meantime, you might enjoy the beautiful Instgram account of David Austin roses for lots of rose growing tips and inspiration here.

Outfit of the Week

I found this fabulous midi dress on Etsy for a great price. The sandals (I ordered from Madewell run big) I am going to have to exchange for a smaller size but they are very comfortable. The bag is also from Madewell and the earrings are inexpensive from Amazon here.

Lake Michigan Home in House Beautiful by Frank Pontiero

I just received my lastest House Beautiful. I am so glad I resubscribed. This beautiful home on Lake Michigan designed by Frank Pontiero and photographed by Erik Piasecki is magic. I grew up in the Midwest, and this home checks all my boxes.

Love the collected look of both of these rooms. Don’t they look like they have been designed and gathered over time? It is so much more inviting.

Roasted Cauliflower, Chickpea & Cucumber Appetizer

There is a reason you don’t often find recipes that come directly from me very often here. Many of of my recipes are “put together” from ideas I glean from others. We had our wonderful neighbors Freddie & John over last night for a glass of wine to meet Scout. I served this healthy delicious made up appetizer. Freddie brought stuffed endive (failed to take a pic). FYI leftovers are great on a bed of greens, or in pita with fresh lettuce as a sandwich.

Scout Update

The good news is he is sleeping through the night in the crate. I thing (the snuggle puppy found here) has a lot to do with that. The downside is he is a puppy and he does love to chew anything and everything. Our house looks like a tornado hit it, but he comes when called with treats, and is a joy. There you have it the latest Scout report!

My Favorite Bra

I recently got an email from a reader asking about my favorite bra. She said she had tried many with no success. My favorite bra that I have been wearing for years is not expensive, it is comfortable, and does what it is supposed to! You can find the bra right here on Amazon. I heard back from my reader and she loves hers as well, so I thought I would share it with you.

Thank you for reading, what do beach houses, rose gardens and a puppy have in common? If there is anything you would like to chat about on Sundays I would love to hear about it in the comments. I have been getting a lot of emails with specific questions. I love hearing from you and I try to answer them right away, but some fall through the cracks. If I have failed to answer one of yours, please ask me in the comments. That way I will be sure to answer it . Have a great week!

Now let’s pop over and visit Annie and Mary Ann to see what they are up to.

    Cindy,
Scout is adorable and not matter that your house looks like a tornado hit, it is all worth it for the joy these sweet pups bring to life.
We have 3, we got our last during covid and she is such a little baby and every day with her is a tornado waiting to happen.
Love the outfit. How do you find the dress fits? Is is see-through? A few comments mentioned that in the store page.
I have bookmarked the recipe for my next party.
    Have a great week.

      Hi Elizabeth

I did not order the Gap dress and we do not have a Gap nearby. I have two linen slips (white and black) that I ordered on Etsy if a dress is see through. I will link to them next Sunday. Thank you for reminding me!

The chickpeas and cauliflower appetizer recipe was amazing! I made it last night and it ended up being a great accompaniment to the tuscan bean soup I made. Made for a hearty meal. I’ll be putting it into my recipe collection. Thank you for sharing!

Cindy, I loved the house on the lake so much too! Beautiful mix and love the dining chairs. Love the palm toile on the dress and I just tried those sandals on at Madewell last week and love them!!

Your appetizer looks healthy and yummy. Scout is such a love. I would have a hard time leaving the house..
I have to get some David Roses this week to replace volunteers that came up from our remodel. Your yard is always goals!!!
    Have a great week Cindy.

What do beach houses, roses and a puppy have in common? They all make me very happy! Now where can I find all in one place!

    Cindy,
Scout is adorable. Most puppies are so darn cute that it’s easy to forgive them when they chew something of yours. Haha. As a widow and empty nester, I can tell you the best decision I’ve made in a long time was to get a new puppy when our old dog passed. Bentley (Berne doodle mini) is so much fun!
    Enjoy.

I love your puppy! I have black labs and they do shed a lot year round, but their personalities are so great that I can get over the shedding. I read about the Chom Chom roller in the New York Times Wirecutter, It is not expensive, available on Amazon, and convenient for the human companions of high shedding breeds. Have fun with Scout!

Love that dress but I have the same “nightgown” look issue. I used to be 5’8” and often wore heels and wedges. Aging has reduced me to 5’3” and flats are my shoe of choice so I have to be careful with dress lengths and silhouettes or it’s too much of a granny-fied look. I really miss that 5 inches!

Wait a second. Are those roses that you show at the beginning your garden? They are stupendous.Always love your suggestions. I’ve got pants and shirts and all sorts of things you have recommended. That dog is so adorable. Love him already. What’s not to lovel.

We also used the “Snuggle Puppy” from Amazon for our 1 1/2 year old chocolate lab. She still sleeps with her baby… they work for getting your puppy to sleep thru the night!! Good luck with your baby Scout in the months ahead. Lab’s definitely need your attention but well worth it! Love your posts BIW!!

Here’s to Scout! I rescued a Spaniel/Whippet, Archie, in December and he has brought a whole new energy to my once-empty home. Enjoy every cuddle and kiss!

what size dress did you order? I love it-and Scout-oh my, the joy of a puppy. Nothin like our fur babies. I have 2 very spoiled corgis that our world revolves around… can’t wait to see the pup grow.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sandy

I did not order the dress. I don’t usually order the outfits of the week. I would email the shop owner and they can guide you.

  12. Cristi says

I have been looking for a dress and loved the one you featured. So I ordered it. Hoping it fits and the fabric is as nice as it looks in the picture. I haven’t ever ordered clothes from Etsy. Fingers crossed.
Your new pup looks adorable. Can’t wait for an occasion to try the “dip” recipe.

  13. Gray says

Scout is adorable. My only complaint with labs is the shedding. Otherwise, they are the perfect dogs! ❤️

      • Gray says

I just showed him to my sis-in-law, who is currently melting! She wants a white one and my bro wants a yellow. They have had a chocolate, a yellow and a black. We grew up with a black one named Susie and a little terrier mutt named Herbie. Love the doggies. 🐾

Somehow I missed the addition of Scout to your household. What a lovely pup! He will shed like crazy…adds to his charm…but that’s why there are Swiffer mops! I do relate to a more personal approach in decor…having special art or items displaye…, in vignettes on a table, cabinet or bookcase …gives such an interesting touch and tells you more about the people who live in the room. I love creating these sorts of spaces in my own place, which does not require styling apparently , when the home I put my heart into is listed for sale. I am currently on the way out of a 30 year relationship, so my special things will be boxed and eventually rediscovered once I have a place of my own. There has to be editing, which is always difficult, but there’s also a couple of bins of lovely pieces require going through with an eye to keep, donate , or consign. Quite the challenge. Along with expected sadness.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cath

My heart goes out to you. I am confident you will get past the sadness and find new joy in whatever awaits you. I always value your comments.

      • Cath🇨🇦 says

Thank you, Cindy! ❤️Very kind of you.
I do enjoy reading your posts and likely don’t know how much work you must put into it. While I was away recently ( solo in Paris and Normandy )
I couldn’t link with any of my favourite women. Back now, and ready to meet challenges head on. However, the man here is trying to control everything, so it is extremely difficult. I cannot offer on something I can actually afford if he refuses to list our lovely house. 🤨

Love the Etsy dress and the entire storefront with its Indian cottons. I’d love to see a post focused solely on this dress — entitled “How to wear it so it doesn’t look like a nightgown,” LOL! Every time I put on one of these flowy, tiered dresses, which in theory I love, I look like I’m headed off to sleep. Thoughts?

    • cindy says

Ha!! I have the same problem!! I feel like they look darling on others, but not the greatest on me!! I will give that some thought!!
