Simple Changes to Make a Kitchen Personal

Happy Thursday. I have a busy week so I thought I would just pop in and share some ideas for the kitchen in our new home. The kitchen is already lovely but I thought I would just share my ideas for some simple changes to make a kitchen personal.

Those of you who have been here long know that I am a big proponent of bringing the outside in so to speak. If you have a beautiful view, don’t fight it. The former owners did a wonderful job of “tucking the home into the landscape”. All of the exterior finishes blend with the surrounding landscape.

This is the view from the pool area onto the hills beyond.

The kitchen looks out onto the pool area. My pictures are not that great. We are always in a bit of a hurry when we are there.

The kitchen faces the beautiful pool area which incorporates more of the beautiful stone that is scattered about the property.

To the right is the spa area with the rose garden beyond.

These areas are visible from the kitchen and great room area (more on that to come later). That room will remain intact except for a new light fixture (the former owners are taking it)

Kitchen Island Area Now

Here is the kitchen with its beautiful beam work.

Proposed Changes to Kitchen Island Area

I want to add larger pendant lights and leather counter stools from Pottery Barn. We will probably paint the island either white like the cabinets or more likely one of the creamier tones on the counters. I think the leather stools will echo the beam color nicely.

Kitchen Banquette Area Now

In the corner is a cozy banquette area (I have never had one).

Proposed Changes to Kitchen Banquette Area

Please excuse my amateur mock-up, I use a combo of Canva and photoshop. I am not proficient at photoshop yet as you can tell. Here we may use the wicker chairs we have now in our breakfast room or we may purchase three of the PB leather chairs that match the counter stools. I will recover the banquette in a neutral color (performance fabric) probably the same one that is on my sofa. I just realized I photoshopped in the larger light fixture instead of the smaller (that we have in our current home now). I will link both below the post.

Lovely new house and kitchen. Have you every thought about painting the island a deep chocolate brown? I think it would give it some heft and really ground it and look amazing with the new pendants. But your idea is good too!

Enjoy the process and I will come and have a nice glass of Prosecco by that pool and then we can whip up a big glorious supper in this wonderful kitchen!

    Cindy,
What a beautiful location. I love the view and the patio and pool area. This kitchen is amazing. Those beams, be still my heart. It will be fun to see it with your details and style in place, but it’s beautiful.

So happy for you & Steve, this home is gorgeous, and that view! and those roses, here it’s near impossible to have any roses resembling robust.

I’m so happy you shared this preview, fabulous plans! I appreciate your kind words about the former owners. Too often others slam previous design choices and I think, boy I sure hope former owners don’t read this! There’s nothing to criticize here but we all want to make things our style! Watching with interest your island color, as we have similar cabinet/island colors and I was just wondering about an update.

Those oaks on those rolling hills say California. Beautiful. Not to be a downer here, but I hope the all-too-frequent wild fires in our state will not find you. They got me in my rural home two years ago, and now I live in town (next to the golf course and its sprinklers.) I look at every location in terms of fire risk now. Please stay safe.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kay

You are so right. We do have to worry about that constantly. This area does have natural springs and a stream behind it, which should help.

I can see why you love this house! The views across to the hills are spectacular and you will be without neighbors again. Your kitchen proposals sound like winners and I see where the tv is gone in one picture. I hope I’m not offending you (if you’re keeping it) but it stands out like a sore thumb in the pictures that show it.

  18. Beth h says

Beautiful home and good luck with your renovations! I really need to know if you find a round table (simple, wood and 40” or so)! I’m having trouble finding one that’s not painted or cheap looking.
    Thank you for sharing
