Sunday Fab Five-House for Sale, Ina and Dolly

Happy Sunday everyone.  Today Mary Ann, Annie and I are sharing five things that caught our eye this week. One of them may surprise you.  Let’s take a look at my Sunday Fab Five

VICKI ARCHERS LATEST POST

Vicki Archer is one of the most stylish women I know.  Her posts always get me thinking.  Her latest posts Let’s Start With the Skirt, and Now About the Boots featured this look

vicki archer girl in tulle skirt and blazer

I am just curious do you think women our age can pull a similar version of this off? Last year I wore my daughter’s tulle skirt in our holiday fashion post here  Skip the handbag. A pair of combat boots (perhaps a bit more refined) would be comfy.  I probably would not wear the tie, but what about a ruffle neck blouse and a pin with a long black blazer?  What do you think? Still too crazy?

Tulle & Combat Boots Would you Wear It_

SHOP THE LOOK

I wore my daughter’s tulle skirt in my post How to Translate your Holiday Look from day to Night here

and the Sundance Alexie Shirt  in my post How to Rock a Maxi Skirt..  I don’t care for ruffles but this is sort of a textural version of the ruffle trend.

Those combat style boots from Stewart Weitzman with their thick soles are looking pretty comfy.

Combat Boots Would you Wear Them_

I just thought we would have a little fun with this look.  Would love to hear your take on it. FYI you can see the Free People Kora Cashmere (they call it a sweater but it fits me like a tunic) in the Fall Fashion Post here.  I love that sweater and would love to pick up another color when they are on sale.  They are super soft and comfy. If the ripped jeans are too much for you.  Madewell has the same boy version here without the rips. You can find many pairs of stamped native American cross earrings on Ebay here as well as many stamped Native American bangles on Ebay here

SHOP THE LOOK

You know who could totally pull this look off?  Linda Rodin. You can follow her on Instagram here.  She is pencil-thin however.  I think I would need to get back on the weight watchers wagon to do so.

OUR HOUSE IS ON THE MARKET

It is hard for me to even say the words.  We love our house, gardens, and property.  It is going to be a very sad day when we leave.  Steve plans to retire in a couple of years and we planned to sell it then, but with the market so hot, and so many people wanting to move to the country we thought now might be the best time.  The photographer, Paul Black of Black Sky Photography.did an amazing job photographing the house and grounds (even though this is not the prettiest time of year).  We have it listed with the wonderful Sharon Swallow of Coldwell Banker.  Here is the link to the listing. ,

If you know someone who wants to move to the country, and wants to live close to the peninsula but somewhere more private, contact Sharon. We have enjoyed every minute of living here but it is time for us to move on.  We want something smaller, that we can leave and hopefully travel.at some point. I will do a full house tour soon.  I know many of you have been asking. In the meantime, I thought you would enjoy these aerial shots so you can see the entire property.

It is beautiful and Jennifer Laurence looks fabulous. I would wear that outfit, not sure if I could pull it off but I would wear it.you will have a new project to work on then, and that will be fun and exciting, too I don’t think we can fear change. We have to be open to new ideas and experiences no matter how hard it may seem. I know others have fared ok with having multiple addresses but for mine, it was not good.

    Hi Cindy,
Three years ago my husband and I moved from our home of 35 years. We loved our neighborhood and had many friends that had been living there, raising their children as we did. I thought it would be difficult and that I would be sad, but oddly, I enjoyed paring down and the changes involved in moving to a smaller home. Your home is lovely but I know wherever you live you will feather your nest in a welcoming, collected way.
I’m with some of your other readers. We’re of an age that if we’re comfortable wearing something new to us, go for it.
    xo,
    Karen

It makes me sad that you are selling your absolute beautiful property. But if you’re ready then I understand. It would be very hard to make me leave!! The combat boots I would wear but not the tulle skirt.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy
I am 65 and my husband is 67. He will be retiring in a very few years. It will be very hard but we feel it is time!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Dora thank you so much for your encouraging words. I don’t think we can fear change. We have to be open to new ideas and experiences no matter how hard it may seem. We have loved this house with all our heart, but it is my hope that someone new will love it just as much hopefully with a young family.

  6. Elizabeth says

Good afternoon Cindy! I love the outfit! It is beautiful and Jennifer Laurence looks fabulous. I would wear that outfit, not sure if I could pull it off but I would wear it.
I’ve heard about this movie, I’ve not watched it but I wlll have to check it out.
As for your beautiful house, I wish you a a speedy sale! The house is a spectacular pice of property that has been lovingly cared for and will be a wonderful place for a new family. I am sure that your next adventure will be just as fabulous.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth
I knew the skirt and combat boots would be open for a lively discussion. That’s what keeps life interesting, correct? I hope our next adventure will be a good one. We shall see!!

  7. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy,
After all the years and care you’ve put into your beautiful home I can understand your mixed feelings about selling and moving on. But you will have a new project to work on then, and that will be fun and exciting, too! I have a feeling someone will snap up your property in a hurry, it’s just so gorgeous!
I love the skirt, have some sort-of combat style boots, but wouldn’t wear them together. I’m not fond of super clunky shoes regardless, but especially not with that lovely delicate skirt!
Watched the Dolly movie a few nights ago. She’s it! Wish the bio covered more about her life and movies, etc, but I loved the vintage TV clips and photos. My daughter and I saw her at Shoreline a few years back and it was the highlight of our year!
Who doesn’t appreciate Ina and her recipes? Her new book is on my shopping list for Christmas gifts for a few people.
Great post as always! Happy Sunday.
    XO Heidi

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Heidi
I wish they would have gone into more detail on Dolly’s life and experiences as well. Perhaps that will be another movie. Thank you for the kind words on our home. We will miss it. My lifelong friend, Mary says it is not the house but the memories. I keep reminding myself of that. Have a great week!

      • mimi says

Cindy, I haven’t been a reader for very long, but I’ve gone back to read posts about your garden, pool & house, & weddings…… as a former military wife, I wish I had A (as in 1) home (not several) for stability and constance for our children. They have not adjusted well with so many addresses and schools. I know others have fared ok with having multiple addresses but for mine, it was not good. I wish I had the longevity to get to know my home and establish: the gardens as you have, the community, the friendships, the doctors, the history of the area. Yes, moving allows one to pack up the memories easily and taken with you but a home is so much more than that– I just had to put that here. Best of luck to you & yours in whatever you decide.

        • Cindy Hattersley says

          Hi Mimi
We have wonderful memories in this house and it will be extremely difficult to leave. However, it is time for our next chapter. Our hope is that another family will love it as much as we have. We will never have another house like this but we would like to travel and find some new adventures. I am glad you have enjoyed my posts.

  8. deer and hickory says

You had me at Dolly! I’m so nostalgic about your moving – I imagine you and your house as one – like Bunny Williams and her lovely home – but that’s not what life is. Congratulations on making a huge decision, and I know you will make any place you live an inspiration for all of us.

I’m a no on combat boots – I have big feet to begin with and giant lug soled clonkers would never look good on me, period, and I’ve always thought the were unattractive on anyone but a military service member. As someone who has to wear a lot of gear for my outdoor hobbies, I may be too conventional, but I don’t find them the least bit stylish. I do like a black tulle skirt, assuming it’s on the long side, soft and not petticoat stiff/sticking out, and layered over either leggings, skinny jeans, or another skirt. It reads romantic but festive. I have one that I have worn for years to weddings, holiday dinners, etc. with a white silk dupioni blouse and a long black velvet jacket, when dressy but not formal is appropriate. The highest compliment I’ve been paid to date is that I looked like Diane Keaton. I’ll take it.

As a very young and very cash strapped person in NYC in the ’80’s I couldn’t afford to eat out at restaurants, besides pizza – but on paydays my friends and I would go to the Silver Palate for counter carry out, and Chicken Marbella was always a favorite. I have prepared the original at home for years, and can’t wait to try Ina’s version. Thanks for a lovely read!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Deer and Hickory
Sorry I don’t know your first name. You are right our home is such a big part of our life and history, but it is time for a new adventure. As I tell my husband I don’t want to be one of those “old people” whose house falls in around them. We use so little of it now and it is hard to leave for long. I have wide feet so I know the combat boot look would be tough for me as well. Love the discussion though. You guys inspire me everyday!

  9. Kelley & Co says

Well this is really exiting for you guys! wishing you all the best on this new chapter and adventure. The best part is unpacking in a new place and looking at your treasures with a fresh set of eyes.
As for the boot thing I think combat whatever is not a great look, but I love a chunky chic black ankel boot with a camo T or fun jacket.
Keep us up on the details! Maybe we can be neighbors!!! please ;))

    xoxo kelley

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kel
You are the expert on moves. You were so smart to keep moving and not get attached to places. I am guessing leaving Ojai was the hardest for you. I have thought of you often during this decision to sell. You are my inspiration to do it!

  10. Carol S. says

Well I love everything about this post. Being a Chicago transplant to Knoxville at 50…we’ll love Dolly Parton! Downsized last fall and have not looked back. Loved the memories from my large home and lot and adore our 2800 ranch w bonus pool lush landscape we added and master on the main. I bet you will love wherever you’re planted. Bravo. Absolutely you would rock that look, can’t wait to see. Happy Sunday from stewcarol.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Carol

Thank you , thank you, thank you! You give me the confidence to move forward!

  11. judith says

To the fashion question, a resounding YES! I am a few years behind you, Cindy (not many!) and have a pair of Frye combat-type boots that will last forever, so I am going to continue wearing them. I might consider substituting the tulle, but love the look, and how could anything look bad on Jennifer Lawrence? Please keep bringing us posts like these, Cindy. It gives us something to think about. And THANK YOU for featuring our native daughter, the peerless Dolly Parton. She’s from just down the road a piece (as we say here in Tennessee.)

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Judith do the Frye boots have a wide toe box? If so I am in!! We all love Dolly don’t we?

  12. Susan Hijazi says

We should all wear whatever makes us happy. And for me that means a pair Of black combat boots, unzipped because I can’t I be bothered.
They go with jeans and skirts.

  13. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I love your style! I would absolutely wear combat boots dressed up or down…except my feet are a size 10.5 and that does not translate well with combat boots…but I’ll keep trying to find the right pair! Or I’ll do what I always do and buy Madeline a pair who wears a 5.5!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Annie
My feet aren’t long but they are wide…so the same issue exists for me!

  14. Marcia Rayne says

Love your home! I know you will be sad leaving it, but change is good. Will try the chicken recipes. They look delicious.
And go for the combat boots and tulle skirt! Of all people, you can pull it off! Reminds me so much of Ali McGraw.
    Stay well!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marcia
I agree change is good no matter how hard. Haven’t bought any combat boots yet but I am looking!!

  15. Pat Huber says

I don’t know why I feel so much emotion about your house being sold, but I do. And, your gardens! I have always loved them too but the aerial views show the enormity and perfection of it. It is amazing how your talent shines in every square inch of this home.

    • judith says

Pat, I feel the same way. I am so sad about it and the gardens as well, even though I have only experienced them in photos. But I am glad for Cindy if she is okay with it. All of that landscaping would be very difficult for me to leave!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

Thank you Pat. We will be very emotional as well. But as you know the time has come to downsize!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Judith

As I said to Pat we will be very emotional but we don’t want to be the old people that their house falls down around them

  16. Char says

I love combat boots, especially with a maxi skirt or a funky pant. The key is to get a pair thats not so heavy looking, maybe a more streamlined version. There are so many styles now and if you dress a bit edgy, which I do, it works! I think you can easily carry off!
Good luck on your home sale, its so hard to make those decisions when we are ready to down size and move into a different life style!

  17. Mary Ann Pickett says

Howard made Chicken Marbella last night and it was delicious. Those combat boots are more streamlined (cuter). I have to watch that Dolly movie. Thanks for the great tips!
I love your house. I think Chief and I are flying over it now!

  18. Homebefordark says

You two have been BUSY! Your property looks manicured and so inviting. I hope you have a quick sale to someone who appreciates all your hard work and talent. I may be alone, but I wear boots with lug soles and have since college…50 (!) years ago. Here in the Midwest they are often needed to “combat” our sometimes hideous winter/wintry mix. I would say no the tulle skirt, but think it would be lovely on some. I’d look like a 71 year old fairy godmother! All the best to your next phase of your journey.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patricia
I was thinking of you and suspected you would be a yes. I agree with all the other commenters there is a fine line between being to clunky or too refined that they aren’t comfortable. I do now own a pair but Vicki’s post got me thinking. Please share what your favorites are! And I think you are right…tulle and combat equals scary fairy godmother!!

      • Homebeforedark says

I like Frye, Lacanadiene, Munro and Isabel Marant. I still, a year later, regret not buying a pair of leopard pattern combatish boots with brass studs all around the edge!! I was just over a something in France and didn’t have the energy to buy shoes!! Cannot find them anywhere, they were so fun. I thought the perfect symbol for a 70th gift to myself. I appreciate the rounded toe, the lace up for ankle stability and room for insert if needed. Unlike dr martens, these don’t require the pain before you gain kind of wear in. I agree that some looks are to “tactical” but others can be transitional. I no longer wear heels. Boots are a great option to have fun/comfort with.

I certainly do not wear heel either Patricia. I really like the Frye but are afraid the toebox isn’t big enough. What do you think? I LOVE boots and flip flops…my go tos

  19. Carolyn says

The answer is yes. Over 50 could definitely pull off that look. I like your suggested modifications.
Actually think the shoes Linda Rodin has on would work too. Key word for that look is juxtaposition.
I’m much pickier on what I give real estate in my closet now. Probably wouldn’t buy combat boots but would wear them if I had them. That whole look is rather Ralph Lauren, don’t you think?
(No to the purse too). Love, Love your style!!

  20. Shari Goodman says

Don’t know if you are leaving the state, but I know at least a dozen in my circle who have left for safer passages. Good luck to you!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Shari
We would never totally leave California. But we are open to other areas. We still have our place at the lake for now so we wont be totally homeless should we decide to leave unless it sells, ha!

  21. Marci says

Sad/exciting that you are moving on from your beautiful home. I wish you the best of luck with your new adventure. I don’t understand the allure of combat boots as fashion; to me, they are heavy, clunky, unflattering, made for tramping through the mud in Winter. I look forward to seeing others’ comments – maybe I’ll change my mind.

    • Judy says

Marci, I totally agree with your comment about the combat boots…unless you are serving in one of our military branches and this is part of your uniform. For any other woman…NO, NO and NO

      • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha! Keep those lively comments coming! I thought this one would be the grounds for a great debate. The beauty of being our age is we know what we want and know what we are not about to do! I love it!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marci

I knew I could count on you guys for some great discussion! Always love hearing from all of you!

    • Susan Grady says

Hi Marci- I so agree on the combat boot trend, only a few can pull it off well. I hope it disappears soon..

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Susan

Thanks for weighing in I was sure this one would have strong opinions on both sides!
