How to Style Animal Prints Over 50

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today I am joining my pals Sarah and Kim for our Monthly Signature Style Series. We are chatting about leopard this month. I don’t know about you, but I consider leopard a neutral. I wear it all year round. Let’s talk about some fun ways to style Animal Prints Over 50.

One of my favorite ways to accessorize leopards is with tortoiseshell accessories. Especially when the weather begins to warm up (It was in the ’80s this past weekend). I don’t like wearing heavy jewelry in the summer so faux tortoise is a great way to lighten things up. Here I am wearing a favorite Michael Stars white tee with a lightweight field jacket (Nordstrom Treasure and Bond no longer available but similar linked below), with J Crew Jeans and an old pair of Madewell calf hair mules. The crossbody bag is also old (Rag and Bone), but I found a couple on eBay and linked them below the pic.

Here I am wearing the same utility jacket, a Ganni ruched tee, my trusty CP Shades lily skirt, and the comfy Emma boots from Gentle Souls. All are linked below the pic.

Another favorite look is leopard and a moto jacket. Here I am wearing my moto jacket (similar linked below) with an old J Crew leopard linen shirt. You can find many sizes of this shirt on Ebay here. I am wearing my favorite CP Shades Lily skirt which you can also find on Ebay

I am wearing my long quilted BB Dakota jacket (that so many of you wanted but sold out quickly) I absolutely love this jacket by the way and always get tons of comments when I wear it. I found a few more so you are in luck. I finished it off with my velvet birdies and my Ganni Mesh Leopard Turtleneck. I am wearing the same faux tortoise accessories as above.

Here I am wearing the j crew sweater pants that were so popular with you all. They are sold out but the cashmere is on sale. I added a long banana republic cardigan (lightweight and on super sale $39 get them in both colors!!), gentle souls Emma boots (also on super sale), and a ruched Ganni tee.

In this photo, I am wearing an oversized Ganni shirt (a shacket) with faux leather leggings and my leopard birdies. I linked some less expensive options for this shirt as well. This shirt is a great weight for Spring. The earrings are Native American by Rocki Gorman. It looks like she is out right now, but contact her to be sure.

      Hi Jacqueline

Morgan Winery in the Barnyard. All of their wines are fabulous and they had a great designer help with the redesign of the tasting room ha ha.

Good afternoon. Love your blog! I have a question, please. I love, love, love your Moto Jacket and have looked for one that does not have too many zippers and “stand out” detail. Please share where I could find one like you are wearing.

Oh, by the way, I found a Don Lucas necklace that is just lovely on Ebay …. thank you for the lead.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Linda

I thought I linked to this one, but in case I did not. This Ralph Lauren one is pricey but is almost identical to mine. I just checked and there are several on Ebay here for a better price.

This is my exact jacket for cheap on Ebay here, but it is an XS and here is one in a medium on Ebay. another XS, and a small here

I think my jacket is over 10 years old. Good Luck! I will post this in the comments as well in case anyone else is looking!

      Good Luck

Love the leopard and combinations. You down play it with classics, especially love the denim and khaki. I tried to purchase a Michael Stars Tee but was very confused by Amazon’s prices on black n white, and eBays selection, one size, ahem, really?, gaping low necklines, misshappen tunic? tops, maternity, which is great, but totally confusing to select a classic style/silhouette ? Maybe you could give us a reference to that brand? Thanks.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Laura

The tee I have on actually came from Amazon. They are fine and more reasonable. The only thing I would say is they are a bit shorter. I have a long torso (and short legs) so I always appreciate the length. Otherwise, they are great!! I think MS is having a sale right now. I pick them up brand new or gently used on Ebay (the shine ones). I don’t like to buy the cotton ones used as they are usually just that!!

    Hi Cindy,
Looking so good in leopard. I like all your pieces. You have such a way with clothes and accessories, I admire your style.
I just realized how many pieces I own, a lot. If I put them all together it would be an entire wardrobe. The only thing missing would be pants! I guess I got the bug from my lovely mom who never said no to leopard or cheetah print!
    Xo Heidi

Love love leopard print clothes!! Never goes out of style. Just like black and white never goes out of style! You look FABULOUS IN ALL YOUR OUTFITS! As I have said before you are very classy for your age…you don’t wear old folk clothes!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

I love that “old folk clothes”. We don’t have to there are so many more options out there now!!

  6. Juliet says

Huge fan of animal prints. Especially leopard. All your looks are fabulous. Fabulous. And, tortoise accessories with leopard … brilliant. I just read Kim’s post and I’m heading over to Sarah’s … then to my closet to assess the sad lacking-in-leopard situation so I can shop! Love this series. xo

  7. Wren says

I’ve always loved mixing in animal prints but now I think they are not loving me back as much. Now that I’m silver/gray, the usual background of them in camel tones acts about like solid camel and just isn’t flattering. I’ve been considering zebra or something with a cream background and less brown in the pattern. Maybe at some point, I won’t be as particular about all this and will do as you…. wear any color I want and to heck with it! I love how you pull off mustard, olive and other colors that I wouldn’t consider but they look great on you with your hair. Maybe brighter lipstick helps! Btw, I can see Summer’s smile resembling yours when you give a big smile.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

I know. They really have to be the right color. Zebra is probably better. I do kind of wear what I want even though I know it may not be best. And I think you are absolutely right about the lipstick!!

  8. Karen B. says

    Cindy,
I love the animal prints and it’s fun to see the pairing you’ve shared. Love your style and I’m always happy for the links you provide so that I can copy-cat you! Haha.

  9. Elizabeth says

Cindy, you always look amazing. You have a classic, casual style with a little edge(leather leggings and jacket) I love it!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

Thank you so much. I think one can be a little edgy with gray hair for some reason.

  10. kim says

Cindy I love this post and how you created different looks with your leopard pieces. I really like you in the leopard shirt, just beautiful! I think I need to order the long leopard skirt. Your earth palette is really the perfect thing to make your leopard pieces stand out. I so agree that faux tortoise always looks great with it too. By the way, the cashmere leggings you recommended were awesome and I wear them with my leopard dress shirt! Love doing this with you ladies! Always more great ideas from you Cindy! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

OMG aren’t those leggings the best? I wish I had ten pairs!! Loved your leopard post!! You look so great in it!

  11. Pam says

I love leopard prints but have always struggled with how to wear them as I don’t wear much black. It severely washes me out. Thanks for the ideas, especially wearing it with denim. It is so nice to see pictures with your beautiful face showing without the sunglasses.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pam

I have to take a lot of pictures outside to get one that doesn’t look like I have my eyes closed! It’s work. The darn hooded eyes!!

  12. Sarah London says

You really do have the loveliest Leopard Collection Cindy. And you wear it all so well! It’s so nice to be able to add a pop of it or make a statement isn’t it? Lifts an outfit !

  13. holly says

All your outfits are an inspiration! From casual jeans to a long skirt for a dressier need, they will go in my What To Wear Pinterest Board. Love leopard and tortoise shell. Black and beige/brown are the best combo in people and house wear.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Holly

Thank you so much for your kind words. I love tan and had stopped wearing it with my gray hair. Maybe not the most flattering but I like it so I am going to wear it!!

  14. Judy says

I don’t know how to get a message to Sarah London but I stopped reading her blog two paragraphs in when she referred several times to leopard looking like an old lady. I’m 73 wear leopard and look fantastic. I am somewhat disAppointed. Maybe she just doesn’t know better. Too bad.

    • Sarah says

Judy, you might want to give it another read to the end, as Sarah London is very much in favor of leopard prints! She shared some fun styling ideas.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Judy

I think Sarah was referring to how leopard used to be looked upon. Besides, we know we aren’t old ladies!! If you click on the title of her post you can leave a comment.

Leopard print has definitely found a home in my closet… a casual pullover, recently a summer short sleeve top & a reversible jacket ( both Chico’s), and a trench type raincoat from my favourite local boutique that is a travel basic. Loafers with leopard & patent leather were found at Selfridges in London in October… knew I would find some there…and at a reasonable price. I add faux tortoise shell earrings and bangles if I am only wearing one piece of leopard print. Seeing your stylish ideas, Cindy , I am going to try out pairing with denim. Usually go for black jeans , or tan, but the blue denim looks great. Love shopping my closet!
I laughed at your earlier comment regarding exercise that you wanted me as your trainer! Still slogging on , up here on Vancouver Island , but now have to fit in spring garden clean up🌱 to the exercise mix. Coming on 72, so have to also know when to take a day off and just be still.

  16. Phyllis says

I recently read a fashion blog about what was out and they mentioned leopard prints. Oversaturated and tired as the comment. Gasp!! I was so happy to see all of the posts today saying it is a neutral and here to stay. I love all animal prints but especially Leopard! Thank you for sharing these great pictures!!

  17. Karen says
