How to Master the Art of Looking Expensive While Sticking to a Tight Budget & other Favorites

Are you tired of scrolling through Instagram, drooling over clothes and accessories that seem out of reach? Do you want to look effortlessly chic and expensive without breaking the bank? Looking stylish doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. By following a few simple tips and tricks, you can elevate your style game without draining your bank account. Let’s chat about How to Master the Art of Looking Expensive While Sticking to a Tight Budget & other Favorites. I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie for this topic and some other Sunday fun stuff.

My tips for looking chic for less are simple, invest in key pieces (the best you can afford) that will stand the test of time. Be creative and mix the high and low. When buying from fast fashion outlets like H&M purchase monochromatic looks that mimic higher end styles. Purchase natural fabrics (if you can), they tend to look richer.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Makeup & Skincare Faves

I am not going to cover this sale to death. I will be posting snippets in my stories on Instagram, so if you aren’t following me on Instagram please do! I have stated many times that I am not an expert on anything makeup or skincare. Nordstrom has a lot of products available in the sale this year. I only recommend products that I have tried or researched. That being said, I know many of you are big fans of the pricey La Mer line. I would advise you to check out the offerings that are featured in the NSale for deals. I personally have not tried any of their products but I have heard many of you sing their praises. Here are my favorite products

That’s it from my desk this week. Thank you for reading How to Master the Art of Looking Expensive While Sticking to a Tight Budget & other Favorites. Don’t be afraid to mix the high and low, and shop smart.

If you would like to catch up on any of my Sunday faves you may have missed you can find them all here. Now let’s pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie to see what they are up to.

  1. Cindy, you have so many great tips for looking chic and stylish on a budget.
I am buying less and less, I still like to look but my “style” suits me and I find I wear less and less.

I’m actually shocked by how many apirational bloggers there are, I cannot figure out who can afford the outfits. I have read one blog for over 10 years and this particular persons daily looks range from 1000.00 -5000.00 a day.

    Have a great weekend.

  2. I am scaling back my wardrobe as I find I don’t wear many of the clothes I own. I have found that a quality pair of shoes and quality handbag can elevate a less expensive clothing outfit. I rarely pay full price for clothing items; instead I shop the sales. I also rarely buy fast fashion but stick with quality, classic clothing. Since I am now retired I donated suits and other work clothes so that someone else can enjoy them, along with most of my heels. A few dresses, classic pants and tops are all I need. Quality over Quantity is my new clothing motto.
    Always enjoy your posts!

    1. Hi AJ

I completely agree. It is all about the accessories that make your look your own!

  3. I’ve decided I have more than enough clothes for the summer months.I love the idea of this post. We don’t need to spend a lot on many pieces that fill out our wardrobe.
I do need some new cashmere sweaters that don’t cost a fortune but are still good quality. Perhaps, you could do a post on that later on?
How is Scout’s training coming along?

    1. Hi Joanna

I will look for reasonable cashmere next month. I think we are all too hot to think about it right now. Scout is getting better. We had two couples over for brunch today. He gets so excited he wants to jump on everyone but is fine once he settles down. We put him on the leash when the guests arrived and allowed him to settle down and then he was fine. We took him to lunch on Friday and he was great. Baby steps! We are signed up for another group of sessions with Liz our trainer.

  4. Thank you for showing fashions that I can afford. I recently bought two items from H&M and I couldn’t be happier. I’m 76 years old and like to dress well but probably won’t be needing a closet life of 20 years!!!!

    1. Hi Suzanne

We actually have an H&M here so I try to pop in every now and then. As I said I think the key is purchasing natural fabrics. They tend to have a richer look. Linen is linen, so it is hard to go wrong.

  5. Such a refreshing take on fashion, Cindy. I do wonder sometimes about the prices of many lovely items shown on a few blogs I follow…accessories that are $350+, shoes that are twice the price I would pay, and tops that also are $250 and up. Then change that to Canadian dollars! I have dropped following some because of that. Thanks for bringing us ideas that are actually attainable. Your fashion sense is ‘sensible ‘ and always inspiring.

    1. With all due respect to fashion bloggers as a Canadian reader I don’t follow through on links. I once coveted a lovely pair of sandals on an American blog…so I did some research discovering the company’s North American warehouse is in Montréal! I ordered directly from them at a discount and in CDN$. Saved me $100.00 and I got my shoes with a 20% discount code for a future purchase. If you do your due diligence you can find many items in Canada. Even Amazon.ca carries a lot of items shown on Amazon.com. They might be a few dollars more but shipping is free if you have Prime. I’ve stopped reading blogs that are just ‘link dumps’ for overpriced goods. I tallied up a ‘look’ recently and it was over 1,000.00USD that’s ridiculous but there are deep pockets out there that will purchase the ‘look’ no matter holooking at you barrel jeans LOL!
I am not one of them.

      1. Hi Ally

I am supposedly set up so Canadian buyers can shop my Amazon links. I am paying taxes ha ha! Let me know if you do not find that to be true.

    2. Hi Cath

It is ridiculous how expensive clothing has gotten. I am gifted many things for sponsored posts. I try not to become jaded. I spent most of my life ( and still do) shopping Ebay and other resale outlets. My dad was a bargain shopper so it is in my blood. I always check ebay, poshmark, thred up (with caution), the real real, velstaire collective and more for something I am coveting. Why pay full price if you don’t have to!

    1. Thanks pal! I keep trying to pull off the floral dresses that you look so wonderful in…
