How to make Sweatpants Look Chic Over 50

Today I am joining my friend Jennifer, from A Well Styled Life, for our monthly Over 50 Style Edit. This month we are featuring separates from Eileen Fisher. What is more comfortable than cotton terry? When I spotted these organic cotton terry separates from Eileen Fisher, I knew I wanted them in my wardrobe on rotation. They are comfy, stylish, and oh so practical. Let’s talk about How to make Sweatpants Look Chic Over 50

How to Make Sweatpants Look Chic After 50

How to Make Sweatpants Look Chic after 50

As you all know Eileen Fisher is known for her  Ethical, Timeless, Well-Made Clothes that are designed to work together. Her designs are meant to be worn season after season in multiple ways.

For this post, I asked Eileen Fisher to send me five organic terry separates. I am going to show you how you can style them for a hike, out to lunch or even dinner. I hope these outfit ideas will help you up your sweatpants game. I could seriously wear these every day of the week! Here are the organic French Terry items they sent. All of these items would be great for travel.

Here I am wearing the white organic French terry top and pants with a blue linen scarf, an old Gap jean jacket and Olukai white sneakers. This outfit would be a great one to wear out site seeing during the day. All items are linked at the bottom of the post.

Here I am wearing the same two pieces with the same sneaks. I added a Michael Stars tee and an older Helen Kaminski hat. This could be appropriate for another day of sight seeing.

Here I am wearing the same two pieces with an Eileen Fisher Scarf, a favorite necklace, and Artemis loafers. This outfit could take you to dinner. The scarf could also be tied around the neck for another day.

This linen jacket from Eileen Fisher is probably ten years old. It is a classic fit that never goes out of style. You can see how I styled it in this post back in 2020 What I Wore for a Three Day Conference, and New Jeans Shapes for Women Over 50. I think it also works with the french terry separates. I think this would be fine for a lunch date. FYI the scarf is a dish towel. If you find a fun dish towel that isn’t too thick, it can make a great inexpensive scarf. I purchased the Gelato sneaks (which I love) locally at Sole Tree. If you call them they can order, but you can also find them online here.

I am wearing the same gelato sneakers (one of my new faves-super comfy) and a red linen scarf. I think you could wear this outfit anywhere.

If you want to wear the same thing out to dinner, toss in a pair of leopard mules, and some sustainable water buffalo horn jewelry to make the outfit evening ready.

Here I am wearing a fun Paris hat, Michael Stars tee, and the longer french terry jacket which I love.

You could add any jacket in a color to duplicate this look. I added my favorite Artemis Design shoes and bag to make this outfit more appropriate for a lunch or dinner out.

Lastly, just because it is french terry it doesn’t mean you can’t add a polished white shirt & jewelry to dress it up so it is appropriate for an evening out.

    Hi Cindy,
Only YOU would be so clever to look at your
dish towels and come up with a scarf.
You look nice snd comfortable in your terry clothes. Loungers and comfort is my middle name. I love roomy pants. I can’t believe I used to wear skinny jeans. I now look at them snd say UNCOMFORTABLE.

  2. Karen B. says

    Cindy,
I think I need a pair of Eileen Fisher “sweatpants”. Comfort is the name of the game while looking one’s best! 😉
The outfits you’ve pulled together look great.

Cindy, Love these pieces and you make them look so chic. Great styling ideas here. Especially love the white with the scarf wrapped over your shoulder. These pants are the perfect shape and can be a stand in for pants as they look so nice. I think I need a pair!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sharon

They are super comfortable. The brand is gelato. They carry them at Sole Tree here in Paso. You can also find them online. They are made in Turkey.

  4. Jane Berg says

Great post! I love Eileen Fisher! I need to add some nice looking casual to my wardrobe. I’m wondering about sizing. Are they true to size and are you wearing petites?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jane

I am not wearing a petite but I think I will trim mine a hair. They have a raw hem so it will be simple. I am wearing an XS 5’4 130

  5. Bette says

For those lamenting the price: The EF organic cotton French terry has been around for a few years, and therefore, you can find it on resale sites and ebay. Also, most of the major department stores carried/carry this line, and if you set up a wish list, you can be first in line when the sales or coupons hit. Finally, it seems this year is only black or white — previous years included a beautiful blue-green, cassis, beige, fuchsia, and other colors.

    • cindy says

      Hi Bette

There actually are multiple colors this year as well a green a pretty salmon, and many others. Great suggestion about ebay and other resale sites. Ebay currently has a great maize color that I have my eye on. Thanks for all the great suggestions !

      • Bette says

You’re right! The newish EF website is NOT user friendly, as the colors don’t appear unless you hover over the words. Odd. But exciting to see the colors. Thank you!

  6. Jennifer says

You look amazing! I read your title and thought, “no way,” but then you proved me wrong. These outfits look amazingly chic. EF is an investment, but they last forever and never go out of style, so the cost per wear makes them sustainable basics in my wardrobe. Women may find pieces that appear similar, but the quality can’t be beaten! Bravo, my friend.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jennifer

I completely agree about EF I have several pieces that I have had for years. The quality is unsurpassed

    • cindy says

      Hi Kate

I featured a great Old Navy Sweatshirt that I own three of a couple of weeks ago. As Bette mentioned if cost is a concern (isn’t it always ha ha) checkout ebay .Tey have several right now.

  7. Nancy Yates says

Looks great and very inventive. I can’t seem to get myself past the front door in sweats as I just feel like I am wearing at home/camping clothing, so your suggestions do give me ideas to ponder. For times when I want something not a jean or structured pant but not tights, I have the very inexpensive Sketchers Go Walking pants, which might I add are the best “bootie” pant ever. You will have a lifted “bootie” even if you have a pancake on the backside (like me).

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

I need to check out those pants. I know the shoes of the same name are super comfortable.

  8. Ginger says

Wow, your brilliant and creative style transforms these French terry sweats! So much goodness and inspiring ideas, thanks!

  9. Char says

Love this post! I wear so much EF, she is great for doing
many looks with a few key pieces and the quality is
great. I haven’t tried the French terry yet but will
be checking out.Great looks and they sure fit my
lifestyle now that I am retired!! Great looks!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Char

I think these pieces are just great. I think they will be fabulous for travel as well.

  10. Wren says

Adorbs- every single look! Of course, you’re talking about $178 sweat pants, not just any. The fact that they are French Terry ups their fashion quotient too, I imagine. Love the idea of dish towel as scarf and all of the other ways you have accessorized. Brilliantly styled with your jewelry pieces, hats and sunglasses.

  11. Joanna says

I love the red linen topper but sweats are not my thing. Wearing a towel as a scarf is another one of your ingenious ideas. You really do think outside of the box.

  12. Susie says

Love this post. As always, your styling is impeccable and fun! Eighty percent of my wardrobe is EF and I’m (barely:) 5’3”. Most of her pieces are available in P sizing and well proportioned for 5’4” and under,

  13. Gray says

Love this post. I have been wearing J Jill’s wearever pieces for years. It might be time for an upgrade!! These pieces would look great with all my turkish towels!

  14. Rachelle says

Wonderful ideas! Love every picture of you in the sweats. I always look forward to seeing your emails.

  15. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I love how you show just how versatile a couple of basic wardrobe pieces can be. Great for travel! EF is great for those basics! You look stunning in every look!

  16. Nanci says

Darling outfits. Do the knees bag out after wearing them? Also, I love your cute sunglasses but would love to also see your eyes occasionally (smile)

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nanci

No the knees do not bag out. At least not on me! I am lazy when it comes to my sunglasses. I nearly always look like I have my eyes closed if I take my pictures outside so I have to take multiple pics. It’s also a cheater trick…no eye makeup necessary if you are wearing sunglasses!

  17. cyndi says

These look great I’ve always like Eileen Fisher but worry that at 5’3 tbe styles would overwhelm me. What do you think!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi

I am 5’4. Also, these can be cut off with scissors! It is just a raw hem. I plan to give mine a little haircut after they are washed!

      • Bette says

As a tall woman, I have the opposite problem. But in true counter-intuitive fashion, taking my scissors to these too-short pants and chopping them off further gives me the perfect cropped length. I love this fabric so much, it’s worth it to experiment with the scissors.

  18. Mary Ann Pickett says

You are so talented with accessorizing! I love Eileen Fisher’s quality! Very helpful post!
