How about a Great Movie and a Healthy Salad

Today I am joining Annie from Most Lovely Things and Mary Ann from Classic Casual Home for our Sunday favorites. How about a Great Movie and a Healthy Salad, and much more.

GIL SCHAFER & COURTNEY DANIELS IN GALERIE MAGAZINE

The beautiful Duchess County New York home of Gil Schafer and Courtney Daniels is featured in Galerie Magazine, photographed by John M Hall. Gil Schafer says (in Architectural Digest) he “designs homes to be comfortable, gracious, understated and to stand the test of time”. When you combine the talents of an AD100 architect married to a talented designer, it’s bound to be wonderful. You can read the full article on the Schafer/Daniels home in Galerie Magazine here.

STILL ALICE ON PRIME VIDEO

Has anyone seen Still Alice on Prime Video? I thought this movie about a professor with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart and a superb cast was wonderful. The movie is based on the book Still Alice by first time author Lisa Genova. Has anyone read the book? I am wondering how the movie compares.

PINE CONES AND ACORNS WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Elizabeth’s( Pine Cones and Acorns) Saturday post is always packed with plenty of Saturday goodness, but this weeks post really caught my eye. She featured several good Instagram accounts new to me including that of Our Food Stories featuring this fabulous salad.

THE VINTAGE CONTESSA

Elizabeth had a great interview with a recently retired couple and how they are handling “living with a retired man?” You can read that interview here on The Vintage Contessa.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

I spotted this dress on the Anthro website and thought it would be a dress that you could dress up for a wedding or dress down for a casual day of wine tasting. Two looks for the price of one!

    Hi Cindy,
I loved this post. I’m a huge fan of Gil Schafer. His work and his designer wife’s work make for a winning combination. The salad recipe looks delicious.
Thank you for the great post.

Cindy, thank you for sharing my post and Our Food Stories. They are AMAZING! I spent an hour looking at posts, studying the kitchens and just enjoying the beautiful photography. There are so many incredibly talented people out there.
Love your outfit! A beautiful dress to wear to a wedding and again later.
I hope that you have an amazing week!

  3. Christine Sara Salek says

Such a great movie. Really brought to light the progression of Alzheimer’s and the impact of genetically passed health issues. I did not read the book yet-love your blog! Thanks

  4. Juliet says

Love the Schafer Daniels home … sublime. Those two Elizabeth’s really knocked it out of the park this week! xo

  5. Annie Diamond says

What a gorgeous and timeless home! Love the collection in the mantle!
And Cindy…you never disappoint with you r outfit of the week! That dress looks so versatile!

  6. Gayle Olson says

Loved the book, read it years before the movie so didn’t compare is as much as if I had just read it. The book haunts me all these years later, such a well written book. Several more very good newer books..”Horse”. , “Signal Fires”, “ Lessons in Chemistry” , to mention a few!
I thought everyone knew your outfits were ideas for the most part🥰

  7. Penny Rose says

The beautiful navy dress you pictured is not the same dress when you click on the Anthropologie link. The dress you featured has long sleeves, the other has short.

  8. Barb L says

Haven’t seen the movie, I think I have PTSD (?) after caring for mom and mom-in-law, both who passed from end stage alzheimer’s. Reviews were great, I’m just not ready. I would highly recommend to the book THE 36-HOUR DAY, by Nancy L. Mace, MA and Peter V. Rabins, MD, MPH for anyone that knows or is a caretaker for someone with Alzheimers. There is so much valuable information and by far the best tool that I found to navigate the journey with our moms. Great design, outfit and salad!

      Hi Barb

We went through the same with Steve’s mother but it thankfully did not last too long. It’s tough isn’t it?

Disappointed that the black and white midi dress which had long sleeves was not the same dress when I clicked on it…the dress shown for sale had short sleeves. Pretty but I am too old for short sleeves and loved the long sleeved version.

  10. Lisa Pedrini says

Loved the book as well as the movie — and agree with others that the book was better. I also loved Lisa Geneva’s book Left Neglected about a brain injury and recovery process. So well written!

  11. cynthia willis says

I loved the movie. Jullianne Moore captures the agony of losing herself so poignantly. Thank you for the lovely featured outfit today. I bounced over to Anthro and found a dress I fell in love with! Your posts are like Christmas morning in my inbox! Have a great weekend.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cynthia

I loved the movie too. Glad you found a dress you liked at Anthro. I have a terrible time with dresses because I am long waisted!

  12. Dianne says

I LOVE DeVol Kitchens, AKA For The Love of Kitchens, and the food Stories blog to posted is divine! I just got totally lost in it! …..and that salad? YUM!
Julianne Moore is amazing and I cannot wait to see this movie.
    Thanks for this post!

I am curious if you actually own the straw bag in the “outfit of the week” casual option. Upon exploring the source of the bag with the intent of purchasing it, I found the seller had many negative reviews about the quality of the products ( Etsy is the source for the bag). My assumption is that you actually own the products you recommend? Thanks for the clarification.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kat

I do not. I can’t possibly purchase every item in every outfit every week, unfortunately. I choose items from Etsy because you readers like a variety of price points. I did not see any negative reviews on the straw bags, but if you are concerned I would order from another seller. You can find similar bags all over Etsy.

  14. My Grama's Soul says

I have read STILL ALICE. I actually love to read books before the movie comes out. I thought the book was MUCH better than the movie because it did include many more descriptive incidents in Alice’s life with Alzheimer’s.
Just an aside here, I thought Juliana Moore’s late portrayal of a woman with Alzheimer’s was spot on for the most part….except for the ending when she said the word “luff” instead of “love”. It sounded more like being addled instead of really having Alzheimers.

    Just my opinion, though!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Josette

I do too, and I am almost always dissapointed then! Thanks for your honest opinion.

  15. Gray says

I read the book a couple years ago and didn’t watch the movie. But the book was excellent – I would imagine the movie is good, with Julianne Moore.
    I loved Contessa’s article too!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gray

I did not read the book that is why I was curious. I think movies are almost always disappointing if you have. However, because this was so well done, I was interested in your feelings.

  16. Bette says

Things no one has ever said: “Wow, the movie was so much better than the book.”

LOL! And yes, I’ve read the book and found it thought-provoking and touching. I loved the book AND the film.

  17. Stormy Smith says

The movie was good, but not as good as the book. The movie left out a couple of the most poignant scenes between husband and wife. We’ll worth the read.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Stormy

I find if I read the book I look forward to the movie, but not vice versa for some reason. Probably, because of all the reasons you all have mentioned.
