How to Decorate for Fall with Natural Elements

Happy Tuesday. My blogging schedule has been a bit off of late due to commitments, so thank you for bearing with me. Today I am sharing my home decorated for Fall. Let’s talk about How to Decorate for Fall with Natural Elements.

Let’s begin at the front door. I love the entrance to our front door. This door opens to the courtyard which I shared in this post How to Create an Outdoor Space that Guests will never want to Leave.

If you follow me on Instagram you know of the great pots I found at Loew’s for $60+. They struggled a bit in the heat. I think next year I will fill them with succulents. At any rate, I added pumpkins, leaves, and berries from the yard and a few preserved oak leaves.

I grabbed some cornstalks & pumpkins from our local pumpkin patch Jack Creek Farms and Trader Joes.

I filled my old grape hotte with seasonal elements. You can see the grape hotte decorated for Spring here in my post, The Collected Look in My Garden and How to Get It. I will share how I created it on my Sunday favorites.

This is the entry hall to our home. I love the beams and the ceiling height. On the right side is a stack of grained blanket chests that we have collected over the years topped by a really early mirror (possibly Queen Anne?). To the right of that is a favorite cow painting by Pat Huber and the landscape is by Carmel artist Mark Farina. The windsors were purchased at a California auction many years ago.

At the right end of the hall is a niche where our grandfather clock and two chairs fit perfectly.

On the left is an old jeweler’s sign purchased from Crawford Antiques, and an antique bench purchased on an antiquing trip to Maine many years ago.

At the other end of the hall is another niche where our beloved rocking horse and pewter shelf also fit just perfectly. We are grateful to the former owners for their foresight in creating these niches. They had a lovely art collection.

I planned to change up my mantel a bit more but I wasn’t ready to part with the salmon cupboard doors. I will make a bigger change for Christmas. I added some lawn bowling/exercise pins to the mix and called it good. My old mantel in my Chualar home was much deeper and held many more opportunities for decorating it. You can see that mantel decorated for Fall in this post, Collected Fall Mantel Four Ways here.

On the coffee table I have kept it simple with just grape leaves from the garden and sunflowers from Trader Joes.

I thought I would show you more of what our great room looks like and the arrangement. Fortunately, our table, built by Steve on an old quilting frame base over 30+ years ago barely fit. Unfortunately, we sold the Mr. & Mrs. chairs with our former home. When we moved in we added the large light fixture.

On the table, I filled the large antique dough bowl from Patine with pumpkins and moss. I don’t vary this much from year to year. You can see the same bowl decorated for Fall in my Chualar home in my Sunday Fab Five-Fall Table-Serena Crawford-SGNeva and more here., and Simple Ways to Add Fall to your Home here.

The built in buffet houses all my chargers, napkins, and some of Steve’s wine stuff. The top houses our beautiful silver tray (a gift from one of Steve’s favorite clients) filled with spirits, and cocktail accessories.

On the right is a seagrass tray filled with Steve’s vintage wine openers, a silver tea caddy of my mom’s filled with sunflowers and grape leaves, and some vintage wicker bottles.

Again, all I added to the kitchen were a few sunflowers and grape leaves for simplicity.

This is an older pic of the banquette area. I knocked over the arrangement and broke one of my favorite vessels when photographing.

Adjacent to this area and to the left of the dining table is a large wall that has been in limbo. Steve plans to shorten the opening going into the kitchen in order to accommodate our corner cupboard from our former dining room. In the meantime, I propped up a mirror (that we aren’t currently using) above an old tavern table that I love.

I filled my favorite Hungarian pickling jars with (you guessed it) sunflowers and grape leaves and added an antique Canadian Goose Decoy and an old Native American Algonquin Indian basket.

This is so gorgeous, personal and inspiring! I love that you have mixed high and low and so many pieces with stores too tell.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janet

It is all about the stories isn’t it? We bought that table in Savannah many years ago along with another piece that we cannot remember for the life of us!

  2. Karen says

Absolutely gorgeous! My style is very similar with a little more western/cowboy thrown in! I’m so happy though your style is constantly evolving but it’s still personally yours and hasn’t gone the way of all white! Chippy white is lovely but just not me! Thank you! I always look forward to your posts!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

Hi Karen. I love a neutral base in my main furnishings, but I love adding color in accessories!

  3. Kim says

Cindy I love the entry to your home. It’s beautiful and I need to style my entrance as you have. Always love how you use all the pumpkins in these lovely bowls. Gorgeous. I have to get my pumpkin game on today. Thanks for the inspiration. Always nice to see more of your lovely house. xx

    Hi Cindy,
Everything is just fabulous, but it always is, it’s the “Cindy Touch” that makes your home so unique and special.
Love all the antiques and the special treasures that you have both collected in your life time.
The antique dough bowl pumpkins and moss is eye catching. It’s that “Cindy Touch.”
Your home is just so lovely. You both have worked very hard to bring it all together. Team work makes it pure joy.
    Thank you for sharing.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Katherine

Steve and I are a great team. I couldn’t do it without him. He knows what works and what doesn’t. I am just the idea person!

  5. Nancy Brantley says

Everything is beautiful with your collected treasures and natural Fall arrangements. This is a beautiful home. Your home reminds me of how I furnished one of our homes I had alot of Primitives and loved it….then I sold alot and went to French style.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

Our style has evolved over the years. If it were up to Steve, we would only have American Antiques in our home. I like more of a mix. I think that is what makes a house interesting and personal.

  6. Karen B. says

    Cindy,
You and Steve have filled your already stunning home with so many wonderful items you’ve collected through years. I find it so inviting and charming. I always get ideas for my own cottage from you.
    Happy autumn!

      Hi Karen

Thank you so much. We enjoy our things but will have to part with some. This will be our last home before the old folks home!

  7. Henderson Linda says

Just lovely! I am impressed with your talent of placing objects in the perfect spots.

  8. Barb L says

Ooooh! Your home is beautiful, love all the fall touches (so many great ideas)! Inspiration everywhere. Your grape hotte is gorgeous. I’d give my eye teeth for a built in buffet, (maybe next house) perfect for your collection. Such a good post.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Barb

I really enjoyed the built in buffet in our fixer upper. This one is not quite as spacious but still fabulous! I never had one in our former home either. They are so nice.

  9. Kathy Pusieko says

Always love to see what you’ve done. You are an inspiration. The only thing missing is sweet Beau.
I always thought he added that special touch to your home life.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kathy

We sure miss Beau. The house is empty without him. I hope he is running and swimming in doggie heaven because that is what he loved most, and I hope there are plenty of kids to play with. He adored Summer

~ Howdy Cindy! I absolutely L=O=V=E your sense of style; it’s very similar to my own. I also love the way you incorporate vintage items with more modern ones for a great Spanish-style vibe. Over the years, my style has changed, too. I approach it with my personal style in the way I dress…carrying a western theme throughout the rest of our house. We have vaulted ceilings in our living room and kitchen (no ceiling beams) but not in the rest of our house. We live in the mountains of WV; where in our small unincorporated community, each house up here is different. You’ve given me even more inspiration in preparing for Fall (my favourite season of the year). I look forward to receiving your emails in my inbox. Thank you once again. ~

Cindy, I love all these glimpses into your new home. It’s magnificent. Your fall arrangements are wonderful. I’m pinning away for inspiration. I haven’t gotten around to fall decorating yet, and at this rate by the time I do it may be the holidays. Still, I love the inspiration and ideas are percolating in my head. By the way, sometime I’d love to get the dimensions of your banquette … specifically distance from wall to end of bench. I haven’t given up on the banquette I intended for our little dining/breakfast nook. Although I’m told it can’t be done … I’m sure it can. Happy fall! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Juliet

Remind me and I will email you the dimensions for that when our company leaves!

  12. Shelley Humpal says

Hi Cindy: I’m always glad to find you in my inbox. Your new home is lovely and I love your sense of style. My style gears similarly to yours, with your love for antiques and textures. I too believe in investment pieces and using what you have. I am a newer blogger check me out if you like. https://fortheloveofold.net

  13. Nan, Odessa, DE says

Cindy, Thanks for inviting me in.
Tell me what does the wine hottest do?
Speaking of wine – I like the way you are using the grape vine! Never seen this used in all my many years. Now living n Delaware may be the reason. Ha! Ha! Could I grow a vine inside in a South facing window? Do you think?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan

The wine hotte was used in grape harvesting. The pickers carried them on their backs.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan

I think I may have answered this forgive me if I have!! The grape hotte was carried on the back of the pickers so they could throw the grapes in as they were picking. They have straps on the back.

  14. Gail says

Cindy, your home is absolutely gorgeous. It needs to be in a magazine! Your beautiful fall decor ideas have certainly inspired me. Everything you do is perfection and done with so much love. Thank you for sharing!

  15. Diane O Connor says

This is one of my favorite posts of yours. You house is stunning and I too love the natural elements for decorating. You’ve inspired me to get some sunflowers, grape leaves, and gourds. Thank you.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Diane

I am so happy that you enjoyed it. There will be more to come as I finish more parts of the house.

  16. Gray says

You know what I love that you use – the grape leaves! So lush and fresh. And great year round. Just love them. Maybe I should plant grapes…..
And the concrete pots out front are so wonderful. Love them…
You house is just incredible – ❤️

  17. Mary from Life at Bella Terra says

Cindy, lots of good ideas here today! I love the large planting pots with pumpkins and leaves; I have one of those beautiful large green glass pickling jars that I typically fill with branches of fall leaves. But since I need to go to the mountains to find those, I really like the idea of sunflowers and greens. That mirror makes that tavern table~love it. If you never use it and want to sell it, let me know. Thank you for all the wonderful inspiration on this Wednesday morning!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary

I sure hope we don’t have to let that table go. I think I have an idea for it! I love it!

  18. Dianne says
