Easy Small Powder Room Changes for Maximum Impact
A powder room may be small, but it has the power to make a big statement to your guests. Whether you’re working with a tight budget or just want a quick refresh, a few thoughtful changes can completely transform the space. From interesting lighting, adding texture, and adding collected accessories, it’s all about the details. Today, I’m sharing easy updates that we made in our powder room that took it up a notch—without a major renovation. Let’s chat about Easy Small Powder Room Changes for Maximum Impact.

Easy Small Powder Room Changes for Maximum Impact
As I’ve mentioned before, we were fortunate that the previous owners of our home had excellent taste. However, no matter how beautifully designed a space is, there are always a few elements that may not align with your personal style. The small half bath, while thoughtfully designed, simply wasn’t in my “wheelhouse” so to speak. I adored the charming marble sink they had brought back from a trip to France, the floor tile worked well, and I didn’t mind the faucet. However, the mirror felt a bit too ornate for my taste, and the shiny granite countertops, floating vanity, and light fixtures didn’t quite suit my style. I tend to over think things. After nearly three years of living with it (admittedly, I tend to overthink things), I realized that a full renovation simply wasn’t practical at this stage in our lives. Instead, I challenged myself to embrace what was already there and find creative ways to make the space feel more like my own.

How we Made the Powder Room Our Own
Fortunately the half bathroom has a lot of natural light (due to the skylight in the ceiling), and the walls are a pleasant neutral color. I don’t mind the nickel fixtures or the wall color.
Raised the Mirror
When we purchased the house the mirror frame was actually hanging over the backsplash of the vanity creating a crowded look. Rather than change out the mirror we raised it up. Maybe a tiny child
Swapped out the Light Fixtures & Towel Bars
I really loathed the light fixtures. I found a pair of sconces on Lamps Plus that suited me fine. I added wicker shades (also from Lamps Plus for texture). The room had one large towel bar adjacent to the toilet that we removed and replaced with a small towel hook for a hand towel (or towels) near the sink.
Skirted the Generic Vanity
For the longest time, I struggled to make the vanity more appealing without completely replacing it (which Steve was firmly against). Then, I came across a great fabric on Etsy and enlisted my friend Trish from Cottage by Design to create custom curtain panels. I hung them on a suspension rod from Amazon, instantly adding warmth and charm to the space.

Scouty has decided this is his favorite spot. I am crazy about the Loomia waffle towels. I want to get the bath size for our primary bath.
Purchased an Impactful Piece of Art
I wanted a striking focal point for the most visible wall upon entering, so I chose a stunning large botanical from my friends at Atrium Mercantile. I love how the frame echoed some of the other textures in the room. A room with only cold surfaces is not very inviting.

Shopped our Home
Most of the decor came from other areas of our home. The rug was left over from our kitchen rugs. The stool also from Atrium Mercantile resided in our master bath.

The silhouette was of Steve as a child, the New Orleans print was purchased on a trip years ago, the darling watercolor of “Scouty in a Box” was gifted to me by Lisa Bayne, and I recently had it framed. I may add more art at some point, but I am enjoying it as is for now.

The lower Makenge basket wqs a gift from Paluskiart
Purchased a few Accessories
I purchased a basket (not yet here) from Studio McGee for tp storage on the back of the loo. I ordered an old Indian riser from Etsy to house the essentials, soap & lotion (a gift from my daughter), diffuser ( a gift from my niece), a splurge kleenex holder (love the texture), and a waste basket from Amazon (not yet here)

The baskets on the wall came from other areas of our house. The wastebasket and tp storage was purchased. I had to photoshop in the wastebasket and tp storage basket as they have not yet arrived.

That striped skirt made a huge difference. Genius. I love the idea of adding Summer’s art. Instant happiness when you see it.
I don’t know how I missed this, but it’s absolutely stunning and the prettiest powder room. I love the addition of the skirt and all your natural elements and the dark accents. It’s so Cindy and I remember your powder room at your home up here and was in love with that too.
I have to share this. x
Hi Kim
Thank you so much, it certainly is more my style now. I am glad you approve!
I’m inspired Cindy, as usual! Think I might copy the small stool and stems with what I’ve got before book club at my house tonight. Imagine your far wall a white waffle shower curtain and tub. When guests aren’t using shower a small stool and vase softens that corner. I like your changes, thanks again!
Absolutely beautiful! When I moved into my husband’s beach home, I undertook small and large renovations to put my personality into a Creole cottage. The main floor powder room had a painting his mother had done as a young woman of The Annunciation of the Virgin in Florence. Because I’ve always favored Annunciation art, and paintings of the Blessed Mother, I filled in with my own, which tended to be more modern, including a Madonna and child by a Vietnamese artist. Anything we can do to personalize a space adds to its beauty.
One question, where did you find the beautiful marble riser? I’d love something to elevate my Nest Bamboo hand soap and hand crème.
Love your style! Dot
Hi Cindy
I can’t see my comment about the Frankie 4 shoes on your blog anymore. But, as to the question of the toe box width, the Frankie’s are not that wide if you have a bunion. I love the Dimity version because it is not a hard leather, but I size up, otherwise once you add all of the inserts, my normal size is too small. I was able to wear the Dimitys (black) every day for three weeks on my last European holiday without problems (but I don’t have a bunion). The toe box is certainly not wide like my Brooks. Good luck. Buying comfortable shoes is almost impossible these days
Looks great. This is your decor style in your home. That fabric was the ticket….
Great job, Cindy. Love the striped skirt!!
Thanks Mary Ann…the skirt did it I think!
I love how that bathroom turned out wow just adding that skirted to the bottom of the bathroom sink looks wonderful!! I also love the art so much that little drawing of Scout is so cute!
Cindy,
It looks so great. With the few changes you made it’s your style and very lovely. I love the sketch of Scouty in the box. Best gift ever, the dog and the art. 😉💙

Cindy, the changes you made are so impactful, I like everything you did so much better. It looks like you and your gorgeous castle. I LOVE the artwork. Fur baby Scouty has taken up residence. So cute, just adorable, has great taste where to hang.
I do not have anything to share regarding changes I’ve made to our powder room and 3 bathrooms. I see so many things that aren’t me and my taste. At our stages in our life this is it. The next person will probably come in and change most things. I would if I was buying this home.
Hi Katherine
I couldn’t agree more. My heart is in design, but small changes for us moving ahead. It doesn’t make sense for us to change too many things!
You made some wonderful changes which add so much to that bathroom! I have 3 plain shaded sconces in my master bath that I am about to cover with fabric, and I plan to make a new shower curtain from a beautiful polished cotton floral fabric which I found online. I have enjoyed having a very neutral space for several years, but making these small changes will make a big difference to me! Adding softness and texture to a room with so many hard surfaces definitely floats my boat:)
Hi Paula
You are so right about adding softness and texture to a room with so many cold surfaces. It can be magic!
Love it.
I have black granite in my powder too (but I put it in there! 😬 ), and black accents.
I also have a silhouette of Whitten and of Friday in circular round frames!
You did a great job of making it yours. Love the skirt – I would not have thought of that!
I have one blank wall left to fill (but not a big deal, cuz there’s wallpaper) – I want to do a version of John Derian’s painter’s palette on water color paper. Wish. me luck.
Hi Gray
I don’t know why it took me so long to think of the skirt. I really don’t mind the ornate mirror and the shiny granite nearly as much now! Good luck with your John Derian adventure! I want to add some of Summer’s drawings in the “loo room” with the baskets in old frames next!
Love how it turned out! Is this the vanity you were talking about recently with some sparkles in it? They don’t show in these pics if so. I still need a shade to replace the one that died during dry cleaning in my guest bathroom. If I found fabric, would Tish at Cottage by Design be able to make something for me? I haven’t known where to turn for fabric or a person to create it but I only need something simple for light diffusing. Scouty just happens to be the perfect color compliment.
I recently decided I wanted to do a refresh of my bathrooms. We built the home 30 years ago, and about 8 years ago we had the bathrooms renovated so the counters and faucets were still looking like new. For the powder room I installed a new mirror, switch plate covers in chrome to eliminate the builder’s beige plastic to match the faucet and lights. I also bought a new chrome toilet bowl brush with a crystal look handle and holder! I don’t think I’ll use it, but it looks nice! For the primary bathroom I did the same thing to the switch plate covers. A small thing, but to me it made a difference. I also bought glass storage jars for bath salts, etc. I have a clear tray with silver handles where I placed my pump soap and hand cream. Although all my towels are in great shape I did purchase two new sets and a matching rug to finish brightening things up. I had already redone my linen closet with all matching storage bins for toiletries, towels and sheets so that stayed the same. Both of the bathrooms cost well under $175 and I couldn’t be happier. It was a fun project.
Hi Lyn
Isn’t it amazing what an impact a few simple changes can make? It lifts the spirits doesn’t it?
Cindy, your powder room makeover is stunning! It now seems to be a better reflection of your endearing collected style. I have been looking for the perfect black iron sconces for a new second story to our home in Albuquerque. These fit the bill beautifully! As always, your timing and taste are impeccable! Please keep it coming.
Hi Missy
I am very happy with the small changes we made. I would love to get that granite honed but sometimes you just have to call it good and move. on! Thanks for your kind comments!
Great changes!
What a beautiful makeover! It’s very relaxing in there. No wonder Scout likes it!😬 My small powder room is one of my favorite rooms in my house I have to admit.
Hi Glennie
I am so glad I made the few changes. As I said at this stage of my life any major overhauls are not going to happen!! Small details can make the difference.
