How to be Your Healthiest Self After 60
I am heading to Florida tomorrow very early in the morning. Today let’s join Annie and Mary Ann and chat about How to be Your Healthiest Self After 60. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay active and as healthy as you can!
Eat Healthy-Roasted Vegetable and Chick Pea Bowl

My daughter made this roasted vegetable and chick pea bowl from Kimberly Raymond and said it was delicious! I am going to fix this when I get back from Florida!
Blue Zones-A Greek Island’s Ancient Secret to Avoiding Alzheimers

The blue zones fascinate me. This article though not surprising is an interesting puzzle piece to avoiding alzheimers, and how we can apply it to our own lives.
Workout Tops that Cover Your Bum
I don’t know about you but I hate workout tops that reveal a little too much. They are really hard to find right now! My favorite is the Athleta Coaster Luxe sweatshirt. It is a great weight for most of the year except when it is very hot.

What Supplements Should We Be Taking

I am constantly wondering if I take too many or too few supplements. I have read a lot of contradictory evidence lately. I religiously take collagen ( I recently switched to Vital Proteins) in my coffee every morning and Algae Cal, that is about it. What are you taking, and what do you swear by?

That’s it from my deski this week. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday and thank you for reading How to be Your Healthiest Self After 60. Now let’s pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie for more Sunday fun.

The chick pea recipe looks yummy and will give it a go. I have a Berocca every morning, vitamin E and a collagen booster drink every night (supposedly good for hair and nails). I think keeping active is important and try to walk 10 kms most days when weather cool and swimming in summer. You looked sensational in the Sally Phillips white outfit (on your last blog) – much better than on me when I tried it on. There is also another Australian brand of clothing you may like – Zoe Kratzmann. Unfortunately, my good diet intentions went down the gurgler when the hot cross buns appeared last month and can’t stop with the apple and cinnamon ones. Not much better with the Easter Eggs either
Hi Susan!
I love your Australian designers. I will check out Zoe Kratzmann. Thank you! I am struggling with a few pounds which I hope to get off in the next couple of months. I too love to eat!!
Cindy this roasted veg dish looks so good. Have to try it. I am always looking for a top that covers my butt in leggings too. They somehow think we all want a cropped top. It’s maddening. I love the ones you have here. I use the Vital Proteins too and a food based 55+ multivitamin and an Omega pill. Have the best time on the trip. xo
I take a lot of supplements, including Vital Proteins collagen peptides. Make sure you are taking Vitamin K2 (with M-7) Very important for bone health. Studies have shown it specifically targets the spine. Many calcium supplements already include it, mine has it (I take Bone Restore) but since I try to get more calcium from my diet, I take an extra K2 supplement.
Hi Linda
I will look into Vittamin K-12. I will check out bone restore. I have been taking Algae Cal for years, it does have Vitamin K.
I try to walk often. Just returned from Paris ( my daughter and SIL moved there) and walked a couple miles per day. I also take Vital Protein collagen. (Costco has the best price I have found ) and I take a multi vitamin and magnesium citrate for muscle weakness due to taking statins. I stay busy with a master gardeners group, Lab Rescue, and working elections . I do think keeping our minds active along with our bodies helps. Use it or lose it!
Hi Marcia
Thanks for the tip on Vital Proteins at Costco. I will have Steve check that out next time he goes. We have been getting it at Target out of convenience. Yes to keeping the mind and body active!!
You can also order it from Costco.com and get free delivery.
Hi Cindy. I must follow up on the collagen idea, but currently just take D and Zinc. In my 70’s, my GP still prescribes HRT for bone strength and I garden about 1/2 an acre with my husband and love the exercise. I also try and make 10,000 steps a day and do classical ballet once a week. I also swim winter and summer.
We eat mostly Blue Zone diets now and both of us stopped drinking about 6-7 years ago. Will often have a Pellegrino but mostly drink plain chilled tapwater (we have beautiful water here) and herbal teas.
Are we healthier? Our blood work is great, but our bodies are getting a little worn out. C’est la vie, I guess.
Hi Prue
Darn that body!! It sounds like you are doing everything you can to lead a healthy lifestyle!
Great topic and a good one for sharing … I am in my mid 70’s now and although I could use a pair of better feet…walking more than a mile isn’t my most comfortable exercise …reformer Pilates
( you know this , Cindy) is my twice weekly choice, and proving extremely beneficial, along with bicycle rides when the weather permits. Once my Meniere’s calms down( vertigo) I will plop into the local pool to resume my water workouts of 45 minutes active movement in the deep end, followed by some laps. Unfortunately, the pool is extremely busy , so I have to choose the timing ‘sweet spot’ to have a good experience. I take out my walking poles and get back to a short but energetic walks …enjoying the signs of spring in my area. Since my upper body is also engaged, it really becomes a power workout.
Presently enjoying a Uniworld cruise in Belgium and the Netherlands , and frustrated as my feet are sore late afternoon, and reminding me that I need to dial back on walking long distances over cobbled streets. Still , doing as much as I can comfortably and enjoying the experience.
For daily supplements, I take Omega 3, Vitamin D & C , as well as B12. I add lots of nuts to my meals and enjoy fish often. If feeling like a cold is coming on, I am fortunate as I usually seem to feel better within a few hours.I found a herbal spray here called Cold Blaster and use that throughout the odd ‘crummy’ day. Flu shots are a yearly November ritual. This is the combination that works for me and I will tweak it as needed.
Hi Cath
I am not good about getting the flu vaccine, I always feel like they can’t quite get the combination right! I was taking fish oil and recently read some interesting thoughts on that lately so I quit https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/fish-oil-friend-or-foe-201307126467. We eat a lot of nuts, fish, vegetables and fruits as well.
You might find Dr. Georgia Edy’s book, Change Your Diet Change Your Mind about the importance of what you eat to feed your brain. She also has some YouTube videos that are worth a look.
Hi Marcie
I did read that book very interesting!
I also add Vital Proteins Collagen powder to my morning coffee. I used to take quite a few supplements and vitamins; however, I found they were making me feel very fatigued no matter when I took them. I stopped them all and feel so much better. I lift weights 4 to 5 times a week and do a 15 minute stretching routine every morning, which has helped my flexibility and cranky back immensely. I try to get in a 3 to 4 mile walk daily which encompasses quite a few hills. I’m considering adding a weighted vest to wear on my walks for bone density improvement. I’m 68 and feel great!
Hi Kiersten
My husband recently started taking collagen and cannot believe how his nails have grown!! I have wondered about the weighted vests as well.
I’m 68 and as far as I know by blood work and how I feel I’m doing fine. Don’t take any vitamins or supplements. I read years ago if you don’t take the right supplements together ( balance) you’re doing your body harm…. don’t know?? Try to eat fresh healthy balanced food is what I try to do every day with a unhealthy treat occasionally.
Hi Nancy
It is certainly best if we can get the necessary nutrients from our food!!
Collagen For Her is back in stock! Just ordered today!
Hi Joan
I took collagen for her for years and was very happy with it. I just recently switched to Vital Proteins.
I take D3, Zinc, and Calcium daily. I’d love to include collagen in the mix, but after having breast cancer in 2021, my oncologist warned me off of ingesting it (she said it’s fine to put on my skin). I’ve read conflicting articles about it but for now, will not use it.
Hi Tess
Follow your doctors orders!
Hi – I am a big believer in science-backed nutritional research you can trust (so much of what is on social media is actually not based in any research and many of the influencers have zero training in nutritional science). Two people I follow (one American, one Canadian) who are well-trained nutritionists and study research-based nutritional science are: https://desireerd.com/ (she is vegan but does not push that – is advocating for a more plant-based diet for everyone – her family eats meat, dairy, etc.) and https://dradrianchavez.com/
Hi Kris
Thank you so much for the recommendations. Will check them both out!
B12 (oral pill) 1000 mcg twice weekly, vit D 2000 units per day, Solgar citrus bioflavinoid (1000 mg twice a day)-for easy bruising, flax seed oil 1000 mg twice a day for blepharitis, Nordic Naturals fish oil ~650 mg twice a day for dry eyes. Nothing makes us age 40 again sigh—-
Pilates three days per week and walking or indoor biking . Yes to activity, stretching, exercise!
And also friends, loved ones and stretching one’s mind—–
Hi Mary
Thank you so much for sharing your healthy lifestyle!!
I also take the vital proteins in my coffee every morning and have for years. I started in my early 60’s for my bones and joints. Being a nurse I was starting to “slow down” a bit. Who knows if it helped, but am now retired and still very active. I also take zinc for immunity, D3for bone health, magnesium for joint health fish oil for cholesterol, and Lion’s mane for brain function. I live in a very active community where I play golf, mahjong, cards and have a yoga class several times a week. Thanks for sharing your lives with me. I love all of you and you friends’ posts and read them daily !
The roasted veggie bowl looks amazing and I’ll definitely be trying it as well. Do you know how many servings it makes? Two?
Enjoy your trip to Florida!
Hi Barb
I have not made the veggie bowl yet (plan to next week). I would guess 4 but I will let you know!
Hi Cindy,
I have been using Collagen for Her in my morning coffee after reading your post sometime ago. However I have not been able to get a refill order filled in months. They charged my card but as of yet I have not received my order. I emailed them and their reply was that it is back ordered.
Have you had the same issues?
Thank you,
Diane
I’m sorry, but not surprised that you are having problems with the company. I had the same issue with Collagen for Her after using it for 4+ years. They charged my credit card for an order in January 2025 that I didn’t receive, and then again in March for my subscription order (which wasn’t received). I emailed them and said I was notifying my credit card company and would dispute the charges. They refunded all my charges within a few days. They say that they are having supply issues—but had no problem continuing to charge my credit card for unshipped orders!
I have also switched to Vital Proteins and am happy with it.

Hi Tamara
I used Collagen for her for years, but just recently switched to Vital Proteins, because it has a better mix.
Sometimes I think how old do I really want to be. I’m 75. I walked all my adult life but now my knees aren’t feeling great. My Mom is 95 and very unhappy, her friends have died and all the fun things in life are over for her. She’s lucky to have a sharp mind but most of the people in assisted living don’t. I’m just trying to be realistic.
If you want to have some fun & silliness with leggings, you might take a peek at Loony Legs.
Highly recommend the book Change your Diet, Change your Mind by Dr. Georgia Edy. She talks about brain chemistry and the nutrients your brain needs to function well. She explains the way diet studies have been done and why they are not proven scientifically and lack accuracy. Keeping this comment short, but she is worth looking up on Youtube even if you don’t read her book.
I take Vital Proteins in my coffee with Lactaid and calcium. While my hair is no better my nails are much improved.
Hi! I take a salmon oil capsule, a 300 mg calcium and two vitamin D daily. In winter I add vitamin C. All are recommended by my doctor. In addition I have 2 T. of nutritional yeast in 6 oz. of vegetable juice a day. The nutritional yeast makes a huge difference in my energy and makes my hair and fingernails strong. I don’t enjoy it, but it is essential! I get plenty of protein from my diet. I try to eat a nutritarian diet most of the time, but certainly enjoy eating comfort foods occasionally. Five to six days a week I walk 3 miles a day either outdoors or do Leslie Sansone indoor 3 mile DVD. I also do Miranda Esmond Whites DVD, Aging Backward daily. I decided after I retired to make exercise and diet my part time job. At 76, I feel great! I’m rarely sick. I rarely have aches or pain. I hope others find a plan that works for them. You deserve to take the time to feel good.

Hi Cindy, I’ve been taking the vital protein collagen supplement in my coffee for a few years. Always watching for sales at Costco on the large tub size, worth the $ Now my husband puts it in his coffee as well/ I do believe it helps with our joints as we age.
