I had promised a fashion post on resort wear (my monthly collaboration with Kim and Sarah), but Kim just got back from Hawaii and needed a couple of days to recoup. I thought this might be a good time to squeeze in a Design Ed post. I have long been enchanted with designer Michael Del Piero’s Instagram feed, but her work is just so good I decided it was time for a feature. Welcome to Design Ed-Michael del Piero.
DESIGN ED-MICHAEL DEL PIERO
Michael del Piero Design has outlets in Chicago and The Hamptons where she also sells her one-of-a-kind wares. She describes her style as “object-based” The Uber talented Del Piero began her career as a nurse, went on to study linguistics and business which led to a 20-year career as an executive coach for Fortune 500 Companies. Always a collector, her design career was a natural progression out of her love of antiques and art. You can read more about that progression in the 1st Dibs Article here.
Let’s take a look at some of her wonderful work. I love the collected organic vibe and the seamless connection of the outside to the interior. This office is one of my favorites. The stools are part of her collection here.
The oversized art mixed with the wooly sofa to die for. She is a master of the mix.
Love the blending of the antique and the modern and ethnicities from other cultures.
Etnic accessores, a modern velvet headboard and lamps elevate the black and white mix.
Love the concrete built in, the simple modern art, and that lamp!
This dining room is another of my favorites. What would this room be without the art?
This loft is in an old chocolate factory. She carefully honored its pedigree and added a bit of whimsy.
The La Conche range, the lanterns, and open beam ceiling tone down the otherwise modern kitchen.
When she mixes the old and new, it is hard to discern which is which.
I rarely see her use color, instead, she adds texture and patina to an all-white space with interesting artifacts.
If you want to learn about styling from the best, scroll her Instagram. The white pitcher brings life to this entire vignette.
I hope you enjoyed this peek into the talented Michael del Piero’s work. You can view her portfolio here, and you can follow her on Instagram here. Thanks for reading-Design Ed-Michael Del Piero. If you enjoyed this post you might enjoy. The Wisdom of Black and White here.

I agree about the horns, maybe they are faux and didn’t like the painting or the man pinned against the wall. It is very well done.

Hi Cynthia
That is the beauty of good work. We can appreciate it even if it is not our particular style or taste. Thanks so much for weighing in.
Marcia Rayne says
I must say, she has unique taste. Most of her furniture choices are comfy, except for a few unusual pieces. Did you notice she likes bold, dark earthy colors on the walls? I got a kick of of the chocolate guy. Almost every room has her signature piece. Instead of color, she has texture. Love her style! May not be for me but hey, that is why that cars are made in many colors!

Cindy,
It’s my favorite thing to see styles that may not be my own, but are well done. Thank you for sending this inspring designer.

I love her style and the way she mixes periods and her use of organic texture instead of color. Very nice! xoxo, Brenda
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Brenda
I do to Brenda. I usually like a little more color personally, but what I have found is neutral rooms do not get tiring. Her use of the organic and vintage is unparalleled in my humble opinion.

hard to believe she took the round a bout route to settle into her design. nursing, corporate…these rooms are so earthy and natural. as a designer, i was on the colorist side of the profession…but honestly, this is my heart. brava.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Bonnie
I think you and I are probably on the same wavelength. I so admire her eye.
Heidi says
Hi Cindy,
These rooms are all gorgeous, a very curated and careful look. The texture and carefully selected art is fantastic. I could never live this way, I like too many things and lots more color! But I’d love to visit or stay in a hotel with these vibes!
You always find wonderful things to share with us! Thanks!
XO Heidi

Hi Heidi
Very well stated.

Love the vision. I am exhausted with so many look alike rooms. These spaces show a creative but serene environment. I am so done with “gallery” walls of too small pieces of art. I don’t call big art “over sized” any more, but call it right size. I like the black piece. Reminds me of Louise Nevelson. Large pieces energize a space and a big part of that for me is, “I’m doing this my way, sister!”
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patricia
Yes, it is refreshing to see someone with a curatorial eye and clear sense of their own vision do something fantastic. I agree with too many small anything! Maybe it is because I am in downsizing mode!
vaughan says
its the details I love and the peaceful feeling. the bookcase with all of the rustic pots is a knock out!
Thanks for sharing this!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Vaughan

I can’t breathe! Love it all!! And your eye Cindy…can you just send me a duplicate of everything you like?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Carolyn
I am so glad you enjoyed this piece, and thank you for the kind words.
Mary from Life at Bella Terra says
Cindy, how does one decide their style? I like the clean look of this but I also love color, English cottage , collected chic, and many others. Always love seeing different designers. I almost want one big house with each room having a different feeling!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary
I can be all over the place as well. I wish I had my style as honed in as Michael, but I am afraid I don’t!!
Marci says
Is it ok to say what I don’t like about these rooms? Many of the furniture pieces are very interesting, but I hate the idea of sitting in a chair made from antlers or gazing at a nearly black painting hanging on the wall. Also, I like colors, especially warm ones.
Cindy Hattersley says
Of course, it is! That’s what our community is all about. Not everyone will like everything I put out there. It just makes for a livlier discussion! Thanks for weighing in Marcy.
