Martha Stewarts Best Paint Colors to Upgrade your Front Door

I stumbled upon this article on best paint colors to upgrade your front door from Martha Stewart while researching front door/shutter colors. This house has the same green trim as my former home.  I think it is time for an update.  I am loving lichen from Farrow and Ball.  I hope it isn’t the same color that I picked out for my son and daughter in law? If it is I may have to keep looking! You might enjoy my post on Four Steps to Amp up Your Curb Appeal, where I featured my daughter’s fun yellow front door.

Outfit of the Week

My post on wide-leg pants for women over 50 is proving to be one of my most popular posts ever.  When I spotted these Farm Rio pants from Anthropologie, I had to create an outfit around them.  The J Jill linen shirt is $29.99 and comes in many other colors. Love a hat with a strap, the andres assous sandals are fun, and I love the Sundance earrings (which I own).  They are small but make a statement.  I don’t think this outfit needs accessories that shout.  It is shouting on it’s own.  All items are linked below (except for the shirt which wouldn’t let me it is linked above.)

Life from Bellaterra Garden Obelisk Tutorial

My virtual friend Mary, lives on a historic estate in Phoenix.  She loves gardening and entertaining.  She had a great tutorial (actually from Sunset Mag) on how to make a Garden Obelisk. I don’t know how many times I have been asked for that very thing.  My friend Jim (who passed away way too young a few years ago) made me two for my birthday one year.  They are among my most treasured possessions.  I am trying to figure out how to use them in my new town garden, stay tuned.

I love Mary’s which is painted blue as well.

  3. Patty says

Love the obelisks! As soon as I saw them I thought “Clematis”. There are Spring blooming, Summer blooming and fall blooming. If you planted one of each around the obelisk you could have blooms almost all year long.
Thank you for taking the time to put together and share your posts. I hope your new home will be a place of much happiness.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patty

I did not have good luck with clematis in Chualar but I just might here. You are right they would be a great choice and would not cover them up so you can’t see them!!

  4. Karen B. says

Thank you Annie. I certainly never think of myself as inspiring anyone but I am honored that you think so.

  6. Mary from Life at Bella Terra says

Cindy, First of all, thank you for sharing my garden obelisks! I love yours and I’m sure you will find the right place in your new garden design. I literally spent this morning coveting the article about the cottage in Cornwall. I actually looked at the realtor website and they obviously have multiple bids on it. And I spent several hours looking at all the amazing properties that are available for rental in England. Just amazing! Thanks for the green paint colors…truly wonderful shades. So happy to be your virtual friend! And no surprise you are on the inspiring women’s list! Happy Sunday!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary

I was so happy to see your post on the garden obelisk, so many people have asked about them. I do love the color too! Your blog always has something interesting and inspiring!!

  7. Wren says

Hurray for you for making it into the 365 days of inspiring. I’ve told you before that you’re my inspo for going silver!
Would like to know if you have a good source for fountains. I need to replace mine but need one that can sit against a wall in my small courtyard.
I’m also in Hawaii – just down the coast from Kim in Kona! I noticed sandals just like the red pair you show from Andre Assous in the Tommy Bahama store.
You are fortunate to have such a handy husband who seems to be motivated in the same direction as you.
    Aloha~

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

As far as fountains go, locally there is a place in Morgan Hill (the grass farm i think it is now called). There is another kind of funky place in Gilroy right along the freeway (that’s where I spotted the one I may get), but trust me you have to sift through the stuff. There is also a place in Moss Landing that I have not checked out lately. In San Franciso (south SF) there is Sylvestrie. They have the most options and they manufacture so you can order! I hope you had a wonderful time in Hawaii!

  8. Sandra Sallin says

My front door is a rich red. I love it.
I have a question about your garden. It looks like they’re natives. Do you cut them down once a year? We do and right now they’re growing back a beautiful green.
It looks like your daughter has Natives also. Is that what she does?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sandra
I actually did not have a single native in my yard. My front yard was primarily lavender, Nepeta (catnip), germander, plumbago, daylilies, and landscape roses. They all are pretty water-wise, and they are only dripped once a week. Lavender has to be cut back at least twice a year. We cut ours back three times a year. Plumbago and germander once a year. The roses cut back hard once a year and deadheaded and lightly pruned throughout the year. That was probably too much information!!

  9. Joanna says

With just a few punches of yellow, your daughter’s house has curb appeal. Years ago in one of our many moves we bought a home with yellow front doors. My intention was to paint them ASAP but I actually grew to like them. My front door on my current home is painted BM Raspberry Truffle. It’s a delicious shade of red. I agree that your front door adds much needed curb appeal and says something about the home owner and their cared for home. The addition of chairs says Welcome.
Those wide leg pants are fun!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna

I love an interesting front door as well and yours sounds fabulous! The wide leg pants are fun! You will see them in our post (which will now be Thursday).

  10. Sharon says

Cindy, loved reading your tribute in 365 days 365 women and it is so well deserved. Your talents are amazing….interior design and frankly you could easily be a landscape designer professionally as well. Plus you are as beautiful inside as well as outside and fun to be around! Keep up the always interesting blog and can’t wait to see what you do to your new home!

  11. Francesca B. says

Cannot wait to see what you do with your garden Cindy I know its going to be beautiful!! Cornwall is on my list;I have a dear friend who has sent me pictures and it looks incredible and after a covid binge on Poldark I have a hankering for cliff walks.I ordered the linen shirt, what a great price. Thank you for the lovely post take care.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca

I have to try Poldark again. I couldn’t get into it initially for some reason. Sometimes I find the shows that are slow starters are the best!

    • Leslie says

Cornwall is quite charming. I went a few years ago and rented a lovely little place in Portscatho. It’s a bit out of the way but friendly and cute. I had a balcony and could see everything for miles. Many miles of walking trails and the world famous Beach Hut cafe on the beach. You might want a rental car or arrange for someone to drive you. This place is a well kept secret.

  12. Leslie says

Absolutely no one has those sandals in my size. Disappointed. Not in any other colors as well.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Leslie

I found the shoes! I linked them in the text above the picture, but I will send via email as well. That is so irritating when that happens!

  13. Mary Ann Pickett says

Wow…this was fun. I love those red sandals…and I have that market basket (used it in our picnic posts). You must be so excited about Hawaii… some R&R!! You deserve it!
Grilled donuts AND bloody marys…how decadent. 🙂

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary Ann

You know I am not a doughnut person to begin with, so grilled donuts would not be my jam, but I know others just love them!!

  14. Holly Boyle says

Good Morning! Just read your bio on 365 Days, 365 Women! Great little read and it is true, you definitely lift other women up . . . myself included. You are an inspiring woman with fresh ideas for us older women all while reminding me what a great time this is in our lives. I am excited to follow your down-sizing adventure – inside and out. We went from 2500 sf to a little under 1200 sf six years ago and couldn’t be happier. Thanks for all you share week by week. Appreciate You!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Holly

You made my day. Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your kind words. I honestly have never considered myself inspirational in any shape or form, but I am happy that you think I am. I have the best readers, you all inspire me every day.
