How to Create a Beautiful Garden

So many of you have contacted me lately about my former Chualar garden. Today I have created a roundup of (I hope) most or all of those garden posts. I was not a gardener when we planted that garden. I learned what thrived and survived in that climate. We are in a new micro climate now, and I am striving to do the same. Here is what I learned about How to Create a Beautiful Garden in my former California Garden.

How to Grow Beautiful Roses

I started following Pat Welsh’s program probably twenty years ago.  I have on a couple of occasions deviated from her plan and have never had even close to the same results. If you want beautiful roses and don’t mind putting in the work.  My secret for How to Grow Beautiful Roses is to follow Pat’s plan.

The Importance of Structure in the Garden

The backbone of the garden are trees, hedges, evergreen shrubs, walls, fences, arbors, gates, and other man-made elements. All of these items work together to create a permanent and vertical dimension. In addition, the secondary structural elements such as paths and paving have a major impact on how we use our garden and create design elements that highlight it year round.

The Importance of Structure in the Garden Part Two

As I elaborated in part one, the backbone of the garden are trees, hedges, evergreen shrubs, walls, fences, arbors, gates, and other man-made elements. All of these items work together to create a permanent and vertical dimension. In addition, the secondary structural elements such as paths and paving have a major impact on how we

My Favorite Garden Roses the Yellows

I thought I would do a post about the roses that I have had the most success with in my own garden.  I am not a fan of modern roses per say although I do have one or two in my garden.  I prefer the form and bloom style of the old garden roses, David Austin’s, and Romanticas to their modern counter parts  .Let’s chat about My favorite Garden Roses…The Yellows

Roses in the Garden and a Garden Party

Spring came late to my garden on the Central Coast this year but some of my favorites are in full flush. Let’s take a look at Roses in the garden and a garden party.

The Collected Look in my Garden How to Get It

Collecting and gathering things from your travels, flea markets, and or architectural salvage and antique shops add sense of history and character to your garden. The mixing and matching of outdoor furniture, finishes, and textures are one of the easiest ways to make your garden look as if it’s evolved over time even if it hasn’t.

Do You Think Purple has Power in the Garden

Purple is possibly the most intriguing color in the garden. Because it is both hot and cold it works well with so many other colors in the garden. My new garden has very little purple. I think we are going to have to do something about that. Let’s take a look at Do You Think

My Outdoor Rooms the Pool Area

Don’t be afraid to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors and create spaces where you can eat, read a book, enjoy a glass of wine, or sit by the fire. Welcome to My Outdoor Rooms- The Pool Area.  I am sharing a seldom seen area of my home. I often share photos of the rose garden and the front garden but have pretty much neglected the pool area.

How to Achieve a Collected Look on Your Porch

Our Monterey Colonial house has a porch that runs almost all the way across the front of our house so it called out for large scale items.  We built our home ourselves and in stages so we could afford it.  At that time we had no extra money for porch or patio furniture.

How to Develop a Mature Garden

I had successes and failures along the way but the posts below reflect what worked and what did not. Let’s chat about How to Develop a Mature Garden in California.

You might also enjoy this article Ten Tips for Creating Beautiful Gardens. I will do a roundup post of my former Fixer Upper Garden as well. You can read more about that here. We are currently doing a few updates to the gardens here.

How to Develop a Mature Garden in California

The former owners created a beautiful garden. Not much is needed. I am in the process of adding some of my favorite David Austin Roses to their rose garden area. I am not a fan of modern roses, so we recently tore those out, but that is the only major change we will make to the entire garden. I should digress as things die, I will add more grasses. Thank you so much for reading How to Create a Beautiful Garden.

    Cindy,
I still use several of the plants you recommended from the Chualar garden. I have catnip plants and a couple of David Austin roses. I believe your current garden looks lovely as well. Thank you for the great advice on gardens, especially for California.

    Hi Cindy,

:Lovely oist but I can’t get into the one that features the rose garden party. In fact, I’m unable to get into most of them.

Thank you for your help and a most Happy Easter,

Cindy, I love your talent and honesty! You are not afraid to say, “this took 20 years” it was not created overnight and we did what we could as we could afford it. Social media leads so many to believe that things cost considerably less than they actually do, especially when many times things are gifted or sponsored. In addition “people” make it look so, so easy! The truth is everything takes work, especially a beautiful garden. I cannot wait to read each link and learn a little something because I am completely clueless at gardening.

    Have a wonderful day.

Please divulge more on Pat Walsh’s program. It sounds like it’s what I need.

Cindy – your Chualar garden was spectacular. I am sure this one will be very similar when you are done with it. Gorgeous!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gray

This garden is very different than my old garden. It is more of a wide open prairie garden. I am working on a small area for my David Austin Roses. Everything else will remain the same.
