Chic Curated Ways to Style the Double Denim Trend After 60
I know you are probably thinking “the canadian tuxedo look” is not for me. Does it bring back memories of the 80s or 90s we’d all like to forget? The secret to making it work isn’t necessarily finding two pieces that match perfectly; instead, we’re going to apply our signature collected style principles, focusing on texture, contrast, and mixing the high, the low, and the vintage to build a sophisticated, layered look. If you’ve been hesitant to try this trend, stick with me! I’m going to show you exactly how to blend different washes and fabrics to create a denim ensemble that feels curated, timeless, and completely your own. Shop your closet, and let’s get started on chic curated ways to style the double denim trend after 60, and dive into some of my favorite double denim looks.
Focus on Flattering Fits
For your double-denim outfit, opt for straight-leg, bootcut, or wide-leg cuts. Avoid overly distressed (no rules I like a little distressing myself), or super-skinny jeans that bunch. Choose tailored shirts, slightly cropped jackets, or tailored blazers over wide leg jeans. A looser sweater or jacket works over a straight leg or slim-fit jeans.
Denim Skirt & Denim Shirt
Find silhouettes that flatter your figure. An A-line skirt like this flatters most. I love layering double denim with vintage jackets and dusters. A solid denim look creates the illusion of a taller silhouette is you are shorter like me

Here I am layering my denim shirt, with an older zara denim skirt ( similar here), heeled boots, a crossbody bag there are a few on eBay here, and a recent find a vintage Ralph Lauren Country serape jacket (there is one here on Poshmark, and here on eBay, and a native american pin similar here. Coldwater Creek has a similar look here for less as well.
Denim Jacket & Denim Pants
Matching sets are still popular (to be honest I wore double denim when it wasn’t popular as well).

This cropped denim jacket, wide-leg jeans, sneakers, and crossbody bag (strap here) are great for running errands or out to lunch.

This faux shearling coat from Loup with a classic denim shirt and straight leg jeans creates a more dynamic look. Instead of the attached belt you could add a statement belt for interest. Booties here. earrings here, vintage brooch (similar here)
Denim Dress
I know you have seen a lot of this denim maxi dress/duster. I wear it on repeat. It is a great season spanner.

Chambray shirt, lily skirt ( a few on eBay here), duster , mules.

Dress, boots, bag, scarf (similar here)
Mismatched Denim
Don’t be afraid to mix different washes and different colors of denim for visual interest. Denim oversized shirts are everywhere at every price point. I bought a black one and the one below this year. Denim is a uniform I never tire of.

This oversized denim shirt and a slimmer pair of jeans is a great everyday double-denim look. I have layered different denim washes and shades of denim with a bandana (similar here) that repeats the colors. Mules here, bandana here. I tied the bandana with a necklace I made years ago from vintage native american beads and a Don Lucas cross. Think outside of the box when it comes to styling your accessories. Be creative.
Double Denim with Sweaters

This quince sweater is amazing. I bought one for my daughter last year. She says she lives in it, and I finally invested in one for myself. I think I need another color! I belted my double denim with a vintage anichini scarf (one in gold on ebay (currently overpriced), and my concho belt that I have owned for years.

Chambray shirt, This beautiful sweater was gifted from SSKein (new to me). I love the color and texture, frame jeans, crossbody bag, and Artemis Design Co mules.

This beautiful sweater from Tuckernuck (ralph lauren look alike for less), jeans, chambray shirt, and vintage native american pin from my collection.
Dressed Up Denim
I like to wear denim over the holidays to casual gatherings with my vintage rhinestone jewelry, the rhinestones add a bit of sparkle without going overboard.

I like a fitted jacket over baggy jeans. L’agence jacket (great flattering fit size 6), wide leg jeans (they are terrycloth), denim shirt, boots, rhinestone brooch similar, and similar earrings here.
Classic Jacket & Double Denim
Grab a classic blazer, wool coat, or sweater jacket from your closet and layer it over double denim. This is one of those effortless combinations that can’t go wrong.

I was gifted this beautiful tyrolean jacket from Ann Mashburn (size M), older scarf, ( find similar here) jeans, boots.
Accessories are Key
Denim is casual so interesting accessories will elevate your outfits. Loafers, low block-heeled pumps, ankle boots, or ballet flats work.

WOW! Fantastic post! SO many things to peruse! I have decided in my heart to name you my “pint-size” Diane Keaton!
Thank you for THIS fabulous blog! ❤️
Hi Annie!!
You made my day! Thank you so much!!
Body types and clothes. Attracted to your skills at many layers, and thankful you share, thankful you get a cut on purchases, you earn it ! You see where this is leading, a personal question about body type, and where it seems to go wrong in the macro for each of us.
Your body type similar to mine, yet not quite, and that zone is somewhere at length of torso/legs. Your pic, above, with the denim duster. On you, it’s looking like the hint of a bath robe too, or another angle looks like a fabulous duster.
Sourced a similar denim duster, thrift store, thought thru entire ensemble, rather fabulous in my pea brain, and voila, poof, boom, looked like girl in her robe ! Zero hint of it looking like a duster. What is the math of body formation, leading to success/fail ? Am long waisted, long neck, normal legs, thin, petite.
Same question, in reverse. Have never looked good in wide leg pants, too short. Probably 2 decades not trying any on. Past 3 months, tried on 2 pair wide leg pants, because of your posts. They looked wonderful, worn both often to great interest with my same ‘stature’ friends. Hilarious how they want to know which exact store I bought them. Why, now having 2 pair wide leg pants, finally, that look great? What is the totem pole of facts describing this? I don’t have a vocabulary for it.
Thank you for all you do, all your sharing.
Garden & Be Well…………………
Hi Tara
I always say I am a jack of all trades and master of absolutely none! I totally get the bathrobe equation! I have no idea why that particular duster worked for me. Frankly I was surprised. I think they need to be somewhat fitted without too much fabric, and that is tough!! For instance the Farm Rio sweater I featured-belted on me totally loooked like a bathrobe. I am long waisted with short legs. My thighs are rather large as are my shoulders. I did have a smallish waist but that has disappeared with the extra weight. I have recently discovered regarding jeans and pants that a kick flare is also flattering. I am not sure I was a bit of help-
Hi Cindy,
It’s hard to buy jeans on line. That being said I have a fit question for you on the AYR jeans. I like the look of “The Secret Sauce” that you are showing. I have looked at this style and I need a black pair. I like and prefer only high rise with a zipper. How do you find the fit around the hips? As I have advanced in age and can no longer exercise and two meds that I take have changed my figure. I have more child bearing Italian hips. I’m thinking I need a 28” or 29”. Do you mind sharing the size you are wearing and do you have comfort stretch with this style?
Thank you for your feedback.
Hi Katherine
I love those jeans. They aren’t stretchy at all. I have large hips and a formerly small waist. I am currently overweight at 135. I am wearing a 27 which fits me perfect now but normally I am a 26 in most brands. I am 5’4. Hope that helps!
Fantastic post, Cindy!
I’ve been a fan of double denim since I was a teen. Your outfits are terrific and inspire me to look outside the box with accessories.
Hi Rosemary
Thank you so much!
Love the dou. Always great style advice!
Thank you so much Laura!
Cindy, you have such an amazing wardrobe and the imagination to combine pieces in very creative ways. But, is there anything you really “need?”
Hi Dot
No there isn’t anything I really need. Anything I need or crave I usually find at Resale. I have a friend who owns two great resale shops in the area. I take what I don’t need or wear anymore to her!
As much as I love and wear this look, I had never heard of “Canadian Tuxedo”! Perhaps at 75 I am TOO old??You added some great ideas, and I love your look – as always – Thanks!
Great post. I haven’t ventured back on the double-denim train, but seems like I should. Plenty of pieces to try it right from my closet! Love that Ann Mashburn jacket.
Hi Susan
The Ann Mashburn jacket is wonderful. I was lucky enough to receive it as a gift.
Great looks, but wearing a third piece to hide the two denims seemed to be the message.
Hi Jill
Several do have the added third piece you are correct, but some do not.
In answer to Jill, my budget is JCP, Kohls, Old Navy and a good sale from Chicos. I can repeat those looks with my own chambray shirt from Kohls and jeans from Chicos. I do have three sweaters from Quince and love them. They were affordable and last. My booties are from Skechers and Easy Spirit. I rarely wear scarves as they just seem to get in my way. I live in southern Colorado and it was 21 degrees this morning so definitely sweater weather today! Thanks Cindy for showing us how to dress stylish with double denim from our own closets.
Hi Sydney
Old Navy often has many pieces that are of the same quality of the sister stores! You just have to keep your eyes open!
I love all things denim and chambray. They go with everything and each other!
Hi Mary
I couldn’t agree more! It is my uniform!
I’ve never knowingly donned a Canadian tuxedo. Not sure why. Instinctively wary of so much denim that helps add to my vertically challenged body. But, you’ve given me some ideas to pair jewelry and jackets or sweaters in a new way. Beyond my comfort level. You nailed it Cindy! I have so little closet space that any way I can push my wardrobe farther without adding new pieces is a win.
Hi Leslie
I have a large closet (in comparison) in this home. I did not in my two previous homes so I feel your pain. It is a good incentive to keep a good edited wardrobe, isn’t it?
Great inspiration! Although I love so many of the pieces that you are wearing, I simply can’t afford those prices. Even for something that would be considered an investment.
Hi Jill
I buy most of my clothes on eBay;Poshmark, Thred Up, etc. That is why I always link to them. The denim shirt is quite reasonable from J Crew factory as well. Do you ever do google image searches? It is a great way to find similar items for less. I will try and do more cheap chic options as well. Thank you for reminding me.
Hi Cindy. I have a denim skirt that hit knee length, how can i incorperate it into your fabulous looks? wish there was a way to make it longer , but dont think so . any suggestions would be great
Pam
Hi Pam
I would try a pair of knee high boots instead of booties.
Right on trend! Question Cindy. I cannot get out of my head, patchwork jeans. I saw a developer on the Scariest House Halloween Finale recently. She’s got a closet full of different jeans! But in that episode, she was wearing patchwork jeans. I know she’s younger but what do you think? If they aren’t a trend yet, I’d like to set it! Lol Im dying to find the right pair. P.S. Feel free to send me a private email on this.
Hi Barbara
I LOVE patchwork jeans. I have a pair of Ralph Lauren’s that I thrifted from somewhere. My legs are kind of big so they do accentuate that. I have been on the hunt for a darker pair.
Hi Cindy,
Wonderful looks thanks for the inspiration. I love that Tuckernuck Ralph Lauren wannabe and the way you wear brooches! Getting cold here sweater time finally in California! Take care!
Hi Francesca
Today it is warm again here!!
What size are you wearing in the quince sweater coat
Hi Barbara
I am wearing a medium. I think a small would be fine as well. I like mysweaters a little oversized.
Denim 💙! You showed some fabulous elevated denim looks. Wonderful post thank you!
Hi Lelanne
Thank you so much for commenting and following along. I so appreciate you!
Hi Leanne
Sorry for the typo! I am not sure how that happened.
