Best Ways to Look Classy & Chic in Denim Over 60
I often get comments that women my age should no longer be wearing jeans. Who says denim has an age limit? Denim is one of those wardrobe staples that never goes out of style. When fall rolls around I am dreaming of ways to dress up my denim. It is the ultimate wardrobe staple. The secret to looking classy and chic in denim after 60 isn’t about chasing trends but about choosing the right cuts, washes, and pairings that flatter our own figure type and personal style. Today, I’m sharing the best ways to look classy & chic in denim over 60.
Best Ways to Look Classy & Chic in Denim Over 60
I have written numerous posts on denim. You can find them all here. Sure, we need to embrace denim with sophistication, focusing on fit, styling, and confidence.
Jeans-Focus on the Fit
As a rule of thumb, jeans with a higher rise in a straight, wide-leg, or boot-cut silhouette are the most flattering for women over 60. Of course, your body shape plays a big role (I went into more detail about that in this post “The Absolute Best Ways to Wear Jeans Over 50 and Feel confident”),but at the end of the day, the most important thing is to embrace what makes you feel confident and true to your own style. Frame is having their friends and family sale if you have been coveting a pair.

I paired the green barn coat from Banana Republic (also comes in a pretty yellow),with my AYR jeans, a scarf (similar here),a favorite hat, gentle souls boots and some of my Native American jewelry.

Tuckernuck gifted me this beautiful sweater (M)( I love the fit and feel of it).It reminds me of a Ralph Lauren sweater I had many years ago. You could wear it belted like I have here, or without. I paired it with the same AYR jeans (these jeans from Madewell are on sale and very similar), gentle souls booties, chambray shirt and Native American pin (similar here)

I added this scarf to my collection this year (if you like florals this scarf is really pretty very ralph laurenesque), paired it witht this merino cotton sweater from Banana Republic (on sale)(M), these Frame jeans, and my comfy Gentle Souls booties, sunglasses similar here.

I love this shirt from Banana Republic (M) so much I am thinking about ordering it in another color, paired with the Frame jeans, gigi pip hat, and mules from Etsy, and this great bag from All Saints (now on sale). Madewell also has a great brown suede bag on sale here. I love the rivets.

This Talbots blazer is fabulous ( I returned mine because it was too big) It is a size 6 and I need a 4. I paired it with a scarf I found on eBay a few years back. You can find all of my scarves here. I styled it with your favorite Tory Burch bag.
Denim Shirts
Denim shirts are back in a big way this year, so if you love them, this is the year to invest in a style that is flattering to your figure and personal style.

I love this black denim shirt from Banana Republic, I am wearing it with a pair of jeans from Chicos, a vintage etro scarf (you can find many on ebay here), a Brixton hat, and my new comfy cowboy boots from Ariat (they come in wide).

You can’t have too many denim shirts (M could have worn small as well) (I sprung for this one on sale, love the longer length), scarf (purchased from Crimson Cashmere no longer in stock similar here). Note I tied the scarf with a necklace I made years ago (in my jewelry making stage with old pawn beads). I paired it all with my vintage indigo mules from Etsy that so many of you have purchased.
Denim Jackets
Denim jackets are having a moment this season, showing up in everything from timeless jean jackets to trendy chore styles and sophisticated longer cuts like trenches and dusters. There is something for everyone.

I paired this fun leopard skirt from Talbotswith my trusty icon jean jacket from Gap, gigi pip hat, gentle souls booties, and turquoise jewelry from my collection.

I know you are probably tired of this denim trench/duster but I love it paired with a long skirt or jeans. The skirt is from CP Shades ( no longer on their site but several on eBay here), block print shirt here and, Artemis slippers and tote.
Denim Skirts and Dresses
Denim skirts and dresses are everywhere for fall ’25. and I love how the new cuts and washes make them feel fresh, fun, and so easy to wear at any age.

Scouty posing patiently, likes my ancient long denim skirt (similar here), BR barn coat, Madewell shirt, and Gentle Souls booties, and my Native American cross earrings similar here.

Lands End gifted me this great green sweater (love the color 100% cotton), pairing it with the denim skirt, camo scarf gentle souls booties, and my concho belt I have owned for years (similar on eBay here).
At the end of the day, denim is all about how you wear it. The right fit, a little ingenuity, and a dash of confidence can take your jeans from ordinary to effortlessly chic. Whether you favor a classic straight leg, an iconic jacket, or a denim maxi skirt , the key is making it feel like you. After all, style over 60 is less about following the rules and more about wearing what makes you look and feel your best.

Wow, if I can’t wear jeans, I’ll wear nothing! I love all of your outfits – beautiful and classy.
Hi Molly
I am on your team!
My mom’s retirement village neighbour in Johannesburg absolutely rocks in her jeans at 97. She’s my inspiration.
Hi Suz
How cool is that?
My mom’s neighbour at her retirement village in Johannesburg is 97 and absolutely rocks her denim jeans. She’s my inspiration.
I’m 68 years old and will never give up my denim! Kind of like flip flops lived all my life in So Cal and will probably be buried in my flip flops. Love your style Cindy and keep posting great denim combinations for us 60+ women!!
Hi Juliw
I couldn’t agree more!!
Loved every outfit you wore!, you sure look pretty in the different greens ! I’m 77 and will wear jeans to my grave! I love your style and enjoy how you style your clothes. I believe you should only wear what you absolutely Love.❤️. Your content motivates me to try different pieces of jewelry old and new.
I like my denim skirts, but haven’t worn denim jeans since 1990, when I weighed 50 kgs. These days, I weigh 5 kgs heavier – all on my thighs. I don’t find jeans particularly flattering or comfortable, yet they look great on so many other women my age, including you Cindy. A couple of years ago, on a whim (and champers at lunch), I bought a pair of white jeans, but when reality hit, my legs looked like sausage meat stuffed into too tight casings. I still have nightmares about them.
Hi Susan
I find white jeans to be difficult too. I have big legs too…
Hi Gay
I really think great accessories are the key to any wardrobe. I hang on to my belts, scarves etc. Some of my belts are from the 80’s and I am glad I saved them!
Hi Gay
I completely agree…wear what you love and ditch the rest!!
I’m 80 and have slim petite jeans on right now! I have zero intention of giving them up. I wear wide cut jeans for comfort but my husband still likes me in slim. I have kick flares which are basically boot cut, straight, slim and wide. I have denim jeans jackets and I also love my chambray button downs. I live in rural Colorado and love living in the mountains. How could I ever give up denim?!
Hi Sydney
Denim is uniquely American isn’t it? It is part of our culture.
You said exactly what I was thinking in a comment above, Cindy. For fun, I am going to to make it a quote!
“ I will wear denim in some form ‘til the day that I die!” – Cindy Hattersley
Oh! You influenced me to add a bright pop of color to my more neutral dresses for Fall. I ordered the red Gap dress from a recent post. It will be fun to style as I have a few jackets and sweaters that will work well with the silhouette. I hope it’s half as cute on me as it is on you!
♥️Lynne
You will wear it well Lynne!
Cindy,
I have a family member that works for Levi Strauss, I’m lucky to have a closet full of their clothes. I love them all!
Hi Nancy
Lucky you!!
Hi Cindy, you say denim for over 60’s , well I’m
In my 80’s and still wear my jeans with joy.
I think fashion is to be enjoyed and as we are all different so is our style which often changes with confidence and age.
Jan.
Hi Jan
I couldn’t agree more! I can’t imagine not wearing denim. It has been my uniform for years!!
My closet would be bare without my denim and chambray items! I’m always on the lookout for interesting and fun styles that are a little different. Your outfits are so cute!
Hi Mary
My closet is filled with denim as well!
Hi, Cindy,
I just turned 75 and love my denim. My closet holds jeans, denim shirts, a long denim duster, a barn jacket, and 3 different styles of jean jackets. Hopefully, I’ll be enjoying these things for years to come and the same for all of your readers!
Hi Nancy O
I am embarassed to say I have more than that!
Hi Cindy! I live is Southern AZ and I’m so missing my long jeans! However I substitute with jean skirts, jean and tensile dresses and always have a jeans jacket for air conditioned restaurants. You are right – it’s how you style them and compliment with great jewelry, scarves, fun hats and shoes. I’ve been on kind of a gauze kick this summer – but still feel great in a yummy pair of jeans! Anna in AZ!
Denim is my favorite thing to wear, especially jeans!!!
Hi Marsah
Mine too!!
Hi Anna in Arizona
Summer here calls for gauze and linen as well. I am anxious to roll out my jeans!!
Hi Anna
I know you will not be reaching for your jeans anytime soon!!
Jeans are almost a daily go to for me except in hot weather. I like dark wash, white, grey, and mid-wash colors. Scarves from travels are always great..easily packed and can be put in a basket in the bedroom to use. Scarf ties can be used as headbands and my daughter does that as her work area is in a kitchen as a chef; this adds a little color over braided hair. It’s still hot in San Diego but we can hope for days when sweaters and jeans are the choice. Thank you for your pictures and I miss the area you live in!
Hi Donnie
San Diego is beautiful too!!
I work at a well-known women’s clothing store where the majority of our customers are 60+ and they purchase denim all year. Loads of white jeans in the warmer months. I think straight and wider leg styles, as opposed to skinny leg, have helped with sales because they are more comfortable. No sign of an age limit.
You style all of your clothing so well!
Hi Caroline
Love to hear that Caroline! Thank you so much!
Thanks for reminding me about the Metropolitan Museum’s fabulous scarf collection. I clicked through and couldn’t leave without that red L.C Tiffany silk one. Wow. And after a lifetime in Colorado, I am never giving up my denim, especially darks and blacks. Scout looks so grown up!
Hi Sharon
The MET has some great scarves! I had forgotten as well!
Hi Cindy, can you please share the link for the green sweater from Landsend? Love that color.
All your outfits are wonderful!
Hi Nancy
Did I forget to link it? So sorry! Here is the link

I love that sweater
I’m fine with denim over 60; I find that given my “shape” at this age (thick in the middle), a pull-on style is most comfortable and fortunately these are becoming easier to find. Since I almost never tuck my shirts in, it works! That said, I am not a fan of very light washes AND absolutely NO RIPPED jeans. I never liked that look on kids/teens/ 20 somethings and it is an absolute NO GO for the older women crowd.
Hi Jacki
I do like a bit of distressing on ocassion but I understand that many thing it is a huge. no no!
Another great denim post and I can’t wait for denim season to begin here in NJ. I went to Lands End’s website to look for the green sweater you showed and couldn’t find it so I guess it isn’t a current item? Love the shade with denim.
Jeans all day every day! With boots with sandals with flats with heels! With a barn jacket a tuxedo jacket a tweed jacket! What could be more versatile, more American, more real than our jeans?
⭐️🇺🇸❤️Jeans=American love story⭐️🇺🇸❤️
Hi Leanne
I couldn’t agree more!!
I can’t imagine someone saying you are too old to wear denim?
I can see when you get elderly (like my 91 year old mom), jeans may not be as comfortable or easy to get on, as a knit. But even then, there are jeans that are pull on and very stretchy.
I will wear them three seasons a year, as long as I can get them on!!
And you, my friend, are the poster chick for jean chic! 😍
Hi Gray
So will I!! Thanks for the kind comment too!
Hello Cindy and Happy Friday!
I have never posted but have followed you for a few years and have introduced you to many fam and friends.
I am 77 3/4 yrs. (not a spring chicken )and love fashion, food and design. Denim..all year long!
I have had my” favorite fit” pair patched and sewn back together where they have worn out.
I wish to add why I follow you.I TRUST you. You are talented of course, importantly, you are authentic. That is everything. So, THANKYOU Cindy. for being
the real deal with a beautiful spirit. ❤️
Keep on keepin’ on! Sam in Birmingham
Hi Sam
Well, you absolutely made my day! Thank you for your kind words. I’m so glad you decided to join the conversation. Your comments are truly what make this blog feel like a community.
I’m 72 and not giving up my jeans any time soon. I wear well fitting, high rise, straight leg with no distressing in light wash, dark indigo, or black. We don’t need to put limits on ourselves and those that feel they should, might try to stay in their own lane.
Cindy, you have great style! I feel like I’m in good company.
Hi Joanna
I couldn’t agree more! I hear it all the time. I love your stay in your own lane comment!!
Cindy I agree that there’s no age limit for denim. It’s part of our California (actually Western) culture. Ralph Lauren (and Levis Strauss) certainly put denim into the vocabulary of the fashion world. Older women in Paris are probably conservative in their denim choices and classic styles with overall dark washes look more polished but for everyday, I think anything goes in California! You’ve shown us some wonderful ways to wear denim in your post–the scarves, jackets/sweater jackets and jewelry add polish and *intention*. Great job!
Hi Sally
You know me…I also like a bit of distressing on occassion as well. This post I omitted them because I added the word classy… ha ha!
I love that shawl from The Met! And I love denim and will never stop wearing it.
Hi Caroll
Museum stores have some of the best scarves! I will wear denim in some form till the day I die! My dad did!
Cindy, i’ve noticed you wear alot of scarves, and in many stylish ways. When did you get the confidence to start wearing and can you help me wear them more often ,I have collected many , loving the colors, textures and different sizes, but have not gotten to the point of feeling confident wearing , other than with a coat for warmth . Love your blog and looking forward to many more.
Hi Pam
I have an upcoming post planned on how to wear scarves!
When I see what I consider an older woman wearing jeans I assume that she does so because she’s healthy, happy, active and has a meaningful life going on!!!
Hi Gloria
I do too! To me jeans are youthful!
I loved every single one of your outfits today! I’m going to try some of your combinations. Just the right fit of jeans still eludes me, but I’ll keep trying.
