Zara Elevated Basics for Women Over 60
With prices soaring on most clothing lines. I am always on the hunt for great style at competitive pricing. Zara is having a moment, and I am not talking about the sequined crop tops.
I’ll be honest. For a long time I filed Zara under “not for me.” Too young, too trendy, too many pieces that looked fabulous on the hanger and bolted after three washes. I’d rather buy one great piece than five I’ll toss next year.
But something has shifted. Scroll past the fringe and the beading (there is a lot of fringe and beading this fall) and you’ll find a quieter Zara underneath: great jeans, real & faux leather, wool coats, heavy cotton tees, and some great skirts that look like they cost three times the price. These are elevated basics, the bones of a good wardrobe, and many of them are exactly what women over 60 have been hunting for at a competitive price.

Sadly this shirt is almost sold out, but Zara does restock. I am wearing a small should have ordred a medium as yu can tell.
What Changed at Zara
Zara hasn’t stopped chasing trends. It has simply built a second, more grown-up store inside the first one, and once you know where to look, you will be a happy camper.
The Zw Collection is where I’d start. This is Zara’s premium line, and it’s where the good fabrics live: 100% leather jackets and belted coats, linen-blend trousers, a midi trench that fashion editors keep putting at the top of their carts. The cuts are cleaner and the details are quieter.
Zara Studio goes a step further. It’s the brand’s most elevated collection, designed in collaboration with stylist and creative director Karl Templer, Honestly, it feels like something you might at a boutique in France or Italy.
Yes, there are splashy designer collaborations this fall too, but they’re aimed squarely at a much younger customer, and I’m happy to leave them to her. The real story for us is quieter, and it’s hanging on the regular racks.
And the prices? Still Zara prices. Basic tees run roughly $16 to $26, and most blazers land somewhere around $80 to $150. For a well-cut wool coat or real leather, that is genuinely competitive.
The Zara Pieces Worth Buying After 60
This is where I’d spend my money. None of it is a trend you’ll regret by spring.
Jackets (In my Opinion Zara’s Secret Weapon)
If you buy one thing at Zara this fall, make it a jacket. This is where the brand truly shines, and it’s no accident: structured pieces are where Zara consistently beats its price tag.

This jacket is soooo good (it is faux leather but looks natural) I am wearing a small and it fits great. This dresss (gifted) from Xirena is a great light fall layer and has great lines.
The range this season is the best I’ve seen. There’s a peet with the kind of clean, easy shape you’ll wear for a decade. There’s a soft wrap jacket that works over a silk blouse or a simple tee. For a bit of drama, a brocade peplum jacket or an embroidered floral one turns jeans and a white shirt into an outfit. And when the weather turns, a faux fur effect jacket does the job without the fuss.
The blazers deserve their own mention. Zara’s cut this season runs a little longer in the body with a softer shoulder, which is exactly what most of us want. It covers the hip, skims the waist, and looks polished with trousers or denim.
And then the coats. The Zw midi trench goes with everything you already own. The 100% leather belted coat is the splurge, and the piece most likely to get you asked “where did you get that?” The faux pebbled leather trench. A well-made jacket changes everything underneath it. It’s the fastest way I know to look pulled together, and at Zara you can do it for a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere.

Midi Skirts
Zara’s skirts are quietly wonderful this season, and the midi is the star. A wrap or A-line midi that hits mid-calf, worn with a fine knit, a blazer, and a low-heeled boot, is about as elegant as fall dressing gets. Look for fabric with some weight to it, so the skirt moves well and doesn’t cling. And skip the bias-cut satin slip skirts. They’re pretty on the hanger, but they read as lingerie, and that is not the look we’re after.

Heavy Cotton Tees and Henleys
Zara now has a heavy cotton tee line, thicker jersey with real structure, and it’s a different animal from the thin basics of years past. Their double layer mesh tee in tomato is a winner. Henleys are everywhere this fall too, and I am loving the blue and black layered. Buy the heavier weight. The thin ones won’t last.

Jeans in Every Shape
Zara’s denim is having a real moment, and it isn’t all skinny jeans and rips. This season you’ll find barrel legs with that soft curved shape, jeans with an athletic side stripe that feel sporty and a little bit Parisian, kick flares that crop just above the ankle, and good old straight legs. There’s a shape for every body and every mood. My advice? Pick the one that suits your proportions.. A kick flare is wonderful with a low-heeled boot and lengthens the leg. A barrel leg wants a slimmer top and a ballet flat or loafer so it doesn’t swallow you. The athletic stripe is the playful one: wear it with sneakers. Check the label before you buy. Some of Zara’s denim has a lot of stretch, and super-stretchy jeans tend to bag out by lunchtime. Look for mostly cotton with just a touch of give. And please, no big cuffs.

Scarves
I will never stop talking about scarves. A good one is the easiest way to change an outfit, and it does lovely things for the face. Zara’s accessories section is worth a look this season, from oversized wraps and soft knits to stripes and silky squares.
My rule is interesting pattern and or texture. A patterned scarf in a vintage style pattern, something brushed or nubby, will do more for a leather coat than any new sweater. A cashmere, or silky square knotted at the neck is the perfect finish for a crisp white or chamnray shirt and one of those amazing jackets.
Best of all, they’re amazing for the price. At Zara you can take a chance on a bold color or pattern without a second thought, and buy two while you’re at it. If you spot a wool or cashmere blend, grab it.

Interesting Bags
Purple is one of the big colors of fall, and Zara’s leather shopper bag comes in a rich shade of it. A real leather tote at Zara prices is an easy yes for me. Pair it with a striped wool scarf and you are done.

How to Shop Zara Like a Grown-Up
Zara’s quality is still inconsistent. A blazer can be wonderful and the tee hanging next to it can be paper thin. So I shop it the way I shop a flea market: with my eyes open and my hands on the fabric.

Read the label first. Wool, leather, linen, and heavy cotton are worth your money. A high polyester percentage in a knit is not. Zara’s lighter tees and stretchy denim tend to lose their shape sooner, so that’s where I’d be pickiest.
Plug in your sizing– Zara sizing can be a bit wonky. They do pay attention to their reviews. If they tell you to order an XL even if you have never worn an XL listen to them.
Buy structure, not trend. Coats, trousers, and blazers are where Zara consistently outperforms its price. Novelty pieces can be fun, but they are the first things to look dated.
Start with the Zw Collection. Filter for it online. It saves you from wading through a sea of crop tops to find one good pair of trousers.
Order online, return in store. The best pieces sell out fast, so if you see it, grab it. Then try it on at home with what you actually own.
Zara and the Collected Wardrobe
A Collected Wardrobe isn’t about where something comes from. It’s about whether it earns its place. My closet holds vintage tortoise bangles, a scarf I found in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and a few pieces I saved up for. There’s room in there for a $90 Zara jacket too, if it is a statement or an interesting cut or texture.
That’s the shift I see at Zara right now. For the first time in a long time, it’s making clothes that slot into a grown woman’s wardrobe instead of replacing it every season. You don’t need to buy a lot. Buy one or two good things, wear them hard, and let the rest of the store do its thing for the twenty-somethings.
We’ve earned the right to be choosy. Turns out we can be choosy and still get a bargain! I will be back on Thursday sharing my seasonal Quince faves with Annie and Mary Ann!

I love Zara! The best fitting jeans (on me), pants, tees and sweaters! I have the cutest faux suede coat I bought a few years ago and every time I wear it (still) I get compliments. I love the European vibe and stepping out of the traditional styles (even for just a season) – however if something fits and looks cute I will wear it for years.
Glad you posted about Zara…..
Hope things are going smoothly with you new home hunt .
Best.
That floral triangle scarf is adorable, but I have to say: who decided to fabricate it in WOOL? (Zara isn’t the only brand to make this mistake this season. I predict an onslaught of donated wool triangle scarves at Goodwill in a few months) Sensitive skin at the neck does not want itchy wool wrapped around it. I have high hopes for the red one I ordered from Quince in cashmere. Hopefully, it’s a good, non-itchy cashmere….
Hi Chris
I am one of those who don’t mind wearing wool but I don’t have sensitive skin!!
Great post. Zara has pluses and minuses. I have bought a number of things from Zara Home–all of which were excellent buys. The clothing: look at the composition and care labels carefully. If polyester/acrylic/polyamide etc, steer clear. Acrylic pills easily and looks shoddy almost immediately. It also stays in land fill forever! Much of Zara’s clothing looks great on stick thin young models. I do have an over embroidered coverup that I love from several years ago! One plus: their packaging is eco friendly. (IKEA also changed in the last several years to eco friendly packaging).
Cannot wait to hear about your adventure/journey with advice/tips regarding moving! We are doing the same in the next two years from Berkeley to Santa Cruz!
Hi Mary
Good points…sadly nearly everyone is using blended fabrics again. I don’t understand it. Read the labels. The high end brands are doing the same thing!!
Great post, love Zara! And….I wish Zara prices were the same in the US as they are in Europe! I recently bought the Faux suede belted jacket in Prague for $55, and it is listed at $89.90 in the US!
Hi KC
I agree! I guess since they are a Spanish brand we expect it. I do think Zara is being more careful with the quality of their merchandise as well as their manufacturing processes, but there is still room for improvement.
Great post! Love the denim jacket- does it run true to size do you think?
Enjoying your posts!
