WHY WE MOVED AND WHY WE ARE MOVING ON

So many have asked, and both Elizabeth and Mary Ann have been plagued with the question”Why did they move away from that Beautiful Home?” Neither of us has a serious illness (at least not that we know of!), we aren’t broke, and we aren’t getting a divorce.  Why did we move?  We planned to sell our Chualar Canyon home in a couple of years when Steve retires. We wanted to be able to travel more and not have to worry about maintaining ten acres, a large garden, and a 5,000 sq. ft home that we were only living in a small part of.  Our fabulous realtor and friend Sharon Swallow (whom I would highly recommend) suggested we go for it now rather than wait. We felt the timing was right to take advantage of the crazy real estate market now. Our lake house had been on the market for a year and we figured it wouldn’t sell (we have an eyesore next door), so we thought we would move in there until we figured out what to do.  Guess what they both sold within a week. We were fortunate to have owned this little house.  It had been a rental for almost 30 years.  So, we had to ask our wonderful tenant to leave and here we are.  The move was and still is a huge ordeal.  Think moving out of two homes at once.  Luckily our kids have helped (and I do mean help). We still have a garage filled with boxes, as well as a basement (yes this house has an unfinished basement yippee!).  We now have a working kitchen, a washer, and a dryer (as of yesterday, don’t get me going on that one), and hopefully this week we will have a second bath.  The house is really quite charming, I will post more photos when we get our shades.  Some of the windows aren’t too pretty! I am hoping to get the courtyard garden planted next weekend.  Right now we have dirt in the front courtyard and back, and dead grass that we will resod when it dies.  I am sure our neighbors thought the Beverly Hillbillies moved in. I think we will enjoy it once we can at least get the courtyard planted! Baby steps!

Update, we are not going to paint the fireplace surround.  I am actually loving it.  I have been trying to research it, as many of you think it may be a Batchelder Design.  I would love if that were true, but I have a feeling it is just of the Batchelder style.  Handcraft Tile in San Jose has been handcrafting tile since 1926.  If I were to guess (only a guess), that is probably where it came from.  If you know more, please chime in. I have not found the tiles in his catalog.

POTTERY BARN BELGIAN LINEN CURTAIN PANELS

FYI I ended up using the Pottery Barn Belgian Linen curtains in almost every room of this house. I chose the color linen, but there are several other colors available.  I planned to show them at a later date when things were a little more presentable, but I did not want you to miss the sale.  They are on super sale right now.  They are lined and have a great look for the money (see above). I don’t know where you could find a lined linen curtain panel (they also have long lengths) for this price. I also used their rods in my other house and here.  Unfortunately, they are not on sale. They have a corner unit (which I needed in my dining room) so I went with them for consistency. Target has these rods that are more reasonable as well that get good reviews. Sorry I don’t have better pictures.  I barely got them steamed.  I am also not a “curtain puddler”, but the floors in this 1930″s house are uneven. Also a word to the wise, they appear and disappear daily, you have to be patient.  I had to buy mine in segments.  I also bought a few on Ebay.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

Anyone else dreaming of a vacation?  We are going to Hawaii in September, and plan a few small getaways this summer. I know if I wait until September to look for some beach essentials I will be out of luck. Don’t you hate that? When I saw this beach skirt from J Crew I knew I had to have it.  If I am out in the sun (which is rare especially now with no garden!) I want a good hat, sunscreen, and my legs covered!  Love this strapless suit from J Crew.  I think the skirt could be dressed up with a linen shirt for the evening as well.  I have raved about these flip flops before and they are cheap! I am normally a Jo Malone fragrance person, but this beachy scent from Bobbi Brown has me smiling!

SHOP HIT THE BEACH OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

I love this tankini from Athleta. I noticed this week that the tankini is no longer available in several sizes. I intended to feature it in my outfit of the week but noticed therewere very few sizes left. If they have your size I highly recommend it.  I have it in black.  There are several on Ebay here.

TEN BEST BEACH READS FROM GOODREADS

I am aching to get reading again, any suggestions?  I don’t know about you but I enjoy something a little lighter when traveling like a good mystery. This list is on my radar.

OUTFOOR FURNITURE & ACCESSORIES

If you are thinking about purchasing any outdoor furniture and accessories, now is the time. There are a lot of great sales out there right now including this one from Serena and Lilly.  Everything is 20% off.

TINA FROM ENCHANTED HOME’S MEDITTERANNEAN SALAD

I haven’t cooked anything interesting this week.  I spotted this recipe on Tina’s Sunday post, and it looks delicious.  She also posted gorgeous pictures of her rhododendrons in bloom that I know you will enjoy, and she also recommended the Bobbi Brown Beach scent that I featured in this week’s outfit of the week.

That’s it for me.  You might also enjoy Patriotic inspiration from the past. Tomorrow we are heading up to spend the day with Summer and family, can’t wait!  Thanks for joining us for Sunday Fun Pottery Barn Linen Curtains & more. I know it is kind of all over the map.  Things are hopping around here. For those of you who love fashion, next week I am teaming up with Jennifer and Sarah and we will be talking about black and white.  Thursday Mary Ann, Annie and I will be joining a great group for summer picnic ideas.

Cindy…how ironic that now you have sold your beautiful lake home the “eyesore” next door had construction going on over the Memorial Day weekend. A new back deck is being installed. Don’t know it the property changed hands, but it is certainly a welcome improvement to the neighborhood.

      Hi Laurie

Unfortunately, the house did not change hands. I fear they will sell it to someone similar. That house has had varmits living in it for months. If it sells it will probably sell to someone similar. They aren’t going to put enough money into it to really fix it up.

It looks like your current house? Is it your new house or your current house?

I know that tile from Restoration on diy channel. I love that show. He’s always talking about those tiles. Your house looks adorbs. No pressure. Not sick that you know of. Hysterical. Well we went broke. That’s why we moved. There I said it! Have a sick husband that couldn’t work for seven years and your savings go out the window reallllllll quick. Your house looks so cute. You’ll be so happy when you’re settled. Can’t wait to see more!

    Hi Cindy,
I wasn’t ready to ask but I’m happy you’re sharing your story. What a fun home to work with until you decide whether you want to move to something larger than your cottage. Travel is always a good option. Enjoy Hawaii.
    xo,
    Karen

    Hello Cindy,
I’ve enjoyed your blog for awhile now but have never commented. I enjoy your collected look and realize that describes how I decorate too!
Your beautiful tile surrounding your hearth had me thinking about a group I hadn’t thought of in years, The Tile Heritage Foundation. Their site is tileheritage.org .
My husband who is a tile setter, had a client who wanted to match or replace some vintage tile and they were very helpful and knowledgeable about vintage tiles resources, information etc. Maybe they could help you learn about yours?
    Enjoy!

Called it about the two at once sales! Ha Ha. Like the fireplace better with the screen. I think I’m the only one who said paint those puppies!!! I think it’s because I break out in hives when the color wheel turns to apricot-ish and on and on to full fledged orange and terra cotta is a step along the way!!!But you have no aversion and you will make it look wonderful. I’ve been enjoying the Louise Penny detective series. Found out about them in a Dorie Greenspan blog when she was asked by a friend of the author where Detective Gamache would eat (and what) in Paris! They are set in Canada and come with an interesting set of characters of older women both wise and wacky. Looks like you could wear the bathing suit as a camisole with the black skirt. Today I’m making spicy Sichuan noodles and baked egg rolls. Still not going to the stories. Waiting to see how the Memorial Day everyone in the pool vaxed or not works out. Not overly optimistic…

Love Sharon Swallow – She sold our much loved Carmel cottage a few years back and she was a delight. A wonderful read, especially if you are a foodie, is finding Freedom by Erin French (of the Lost Kitchen). Making a new home is fun – especially with your talent! Doing new things when we get older if good for the brain and soul. Cheers!

  8. Linda says

Cindy, I love your daily blogs!

I don’t need to know why you moved, it is something we all do from time to time and we each have our reasons! I am happy to read that you love your new hone! That is all that matters!

  9. Pat says

Cindy, you truly do have excellent taste. Not sure what your husband does, yet it does seem like you two are very creative.
I will be checking out a couple of your selections. above.
Would you please share the name of the green color on the interior of the cabinet in the natural wood..filled with baskets? It is such a nice subtle value of green. I can’t wait to see your new space, it will be gorgeous, I know. Thanks for sharing! Pat

Cindy! I love your beautiful fireplace and had no idea about that style. I think it’s gorgeous and you make it look as though you have been living in this home for years, in a good way! You really get things done! I’m sure you still have a full garage, but gosh, it’s only been a matter of days and if this is your view at the end of the day, I think I would be quite happy!

    Cindy,

You’ll have your home in shape in no time. I can’t wait to see it when you’re comfortable showing it. As for beach reads; I just finished two that I really liked. Super easy reads. “‘The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave and “28 Summers” by Elin Hilderbrand . I just thought of one more that I really liked as well which was “The Lost Apothecary” by Sarah Penner.

    Have a wonderful Sunday.

Cindy, it’s funny to me that you had to explain to everyone why you were moving, we have had to do the same. Thankfully we do not have to move out of two houses. Unfortunately the market where we are going is crazy and so far we have no house. I have my fingers crossed that by Tuesday we will. If not, an extended stay it will be because it is high season and all of the rentals(that allow pets) are taken unless we want to move every few days.

Love the linen panels, I will have to check them out.

I love the swimsuit and beachwear. I am sure that you will look fabulous, as always.

    Have a wonderful day.

Cindy, I am glad you explained your reasons for selling your home. I love those PB curtains too…have used them a lot. Such a cute beach outfit. I need it for Spain!
