Sunday Favorites: A Farmhouse Find, Fresh Air Fashion, and the Best Kind of Afternoon

Some spaces stop you mid-scroll and refuse to let go. This Connecticut farmhouse, the work of a designer who clearly understands that a home should feel lived-in before it feels decorated is exactly that. Add a picnic spread worth gathering for, outfits that earned their keep this week, and the very good reminder that summer is essentially an excuse to get your people around a table (or a blanket). Let’s chat about Sunday Favorites: A Farmhouse Find, Fresh Air Fashion, and the Best Kind of Afternoon.

A Historic Connecticut Farmhouse

In this Connecticut farmhouse designer Allison Hammatt avoided “anything minimalist or streamlined and opted for color, texture, and pattern as well as antiques, found objects, and family heirlooms that are in line with the spirit of the house.” This project a mix of Greek Revival and New England farmhouse styles, is beautifully photogrphed by Jane Beiles, and checks all my boxes.

Greek Quinoa Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette

Quinoa Salad

If you are planning a picnic this weekend. This the ultimate picnic salad from Style Blueprint. Colin and Lauren made delicious grilled chicken last night (with tons of deliciousness leftover). We are going to pair grilled chicken sandwiches on Bread Bike bread with this yummy salad for a beach or winery picnic.

Quinoa Salad

Serving Size:
8-10
Time:
30
Difficulty:
Simple

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tri-color quinoa
⅔ cup chopped yellow bell pepper
⅔ cup chopped orange bell pepper
    ⅔ cup chopped yellow onions
⅔ cup chopped cucumber I prefer an English cucumber or a de-seeded regular cucumber.
    ⅔ cup sliced Kalamata olives
1 15-oz. can Goya chickpeas (drained)
    ⅔ cup pepperoncini peppers
⅔ cup artichokes hearts I prefer the ones jarred in oil.
2 cups heirloom cherry and grape tomatoes cut into halves and quarters
    8 ounces feta cheese
½ cup fresh herbs: dill, basil, mint, Italian parsley You can even add more, but be sure you have at least ½ a cup.
    salt and pepper to taste
  • Lemon Vinaigrette
    ¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup fresh lemon juice (typically juice from one large lemon)
    ½ tsp Celtic salt
    ¼ tsp black pepper

Directions

  1. Cook the quinoa according to the package directions, which is typically 1 cup quinoa and 2 cups water or broth, cooked for 15 minutes.
While the quinoa is cooking, chop up all your vegetables and herbs.
After the quinoa is finished cooking, pour into a very large bowl and let it cool for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow it to cool faster.
Make your lemon vinaigrette by whisking the lemon juice, oil, salt, and pepper together.
Place chopped vegetables, herbs, crumbled feta, chickpeas, and vinaigrette over quinoa and stir until evenly mixed.
Let sit for 30 minutes to allow flavors to blend, and then serve!
Saves for up to two days in the refrigerator, but best on the first day.

  2. Wow, I love the Connecticut farmhouse!! I’m so glad houses are getting back to Color! 4. Cindy! That farmhouse … swoon. I love a plate wall. And the green fireplace. I’ve pinned like crazy … grabbing inspiration for our new house. What fun family time. Summer looks so grown up! xo

  5. Hi Cindy,
I really like your black pant ensemble with the bandanna tied around the waist! It is very flattering and it gives the outfit a hip vibe!

  6. Please DO keep posting hi/low items. Although it may be the most expensive jacket I’ve ever purchased, I’ve ordered that Veronica Beard eyelet gorgeousness. I think it’s timeless and it perfectly fits my aesthetic and color palette. I’ll want to wear it for the next 10 years. Cost per wear will drive the sticker shock down.

  7. Cindy! What a pretty home! I love a twin bedroom. And that photo of you and Summer is adorable!

    1. Hi Chris

I know the feeling it haunts me as well! I am not normally a big fan of hers but that jacket is to die for!!

  8. I also can’t open the link to the salad, but it looks yummy. Could you post a link to the black top on the Zara collection?

    Thanks so much!

  9. I love your clothes and your style, however, I don’t have the budget to afford the clothes you buy. I buy mine at discount retail stores many times a struck it rich and find and buy clothes with designer labels 👍

    1. Hi Paula

That is why I try to provide links to ebay, poshmark etc whenever I can find them. Most of my higher end items come from resale sites. Much more fun that way!!

  10. Cindy! How wonderful to have your whole family to play with! Summer will soon be as tall as you.

We returned from 3 weeks in Italy and Greece late Thursday evening. Having “unplugged” the entire time, it was delightful to catch up on your France fun. As always, your wardrobe choices looked spectacular and uniquely “collected” you.

Having horrid bunions and my right foot slightly larger, our shoe/sandal issues are similar. Several years ago I discovered Keen Uneek sandals. They look like a leather fisherman sandal but are a rubberized material. The back strap is lined with soft fabric and the rest of the sandal is adjustable. I. just ordered another black in my normal 7 and the Martini Olive Safari you would undoubtedly love. Zappos is easy to order and return. And, btw, I always get compliments.

With hopes these will work for you,
    hugs, Diney

    1. Hi Diney

I will check out the Keen sandals! I had a pair of Keen shoes several years ago.
