Stylish Summer Hats for Women over 50

Hi Everyone, Happy Tuesday.  I hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July Weekend (if you are in the U.S).  Today Sarah, Kim and I are going to talk about Stylish Summer Hats for Women over 50. I didn’t wear hats for years but I absolutely can’t live without them now.

Kim and I were lucky to have lunch together last week.  Here we are modeling our new hats. My hat is from Wallaroo.  It is lightweight and packable. I have a couple of hats from this brand.  I find them to be reasonable and reliable.

When choosing a hat the first thing you need to know is what hat looks best for your particular face shape.  These two articles might be helpful if you don’t already know.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to find a cute straw hat.  There are tons available for under $25.  Here are some of my favorites under $25.

I have my list of essential hats.  Of course, a good ole baseball cap is great when your walking or doing anything else where your hat might blow off.  Be sure to load up on sunscreen (especially your ears) if you aren’t wearing a floppy hat. Here I am wearing a hat from a winery but I prefer a nylon hat most of the time.

I love this hat,  It is an old Helen Kaminski hat.  Her hats are pricey but they last forever.  This one is probably 15 years old. You can find all the links to this outfit in my Resort Wear post here.

Here are my favorite hats that I reach for again, and again.  Two essentials, a necktie (for wind), and a couple of packable varieties.  The Helen Kaminski Provence 12 is the best hat on the market.  Again it lasts for years and is packable.  All hats are linked below the graphic.

Cindy so love you in all of these! So lucky we were able to meet up right before this hat post and try a few on. I was wondering what your hat was ! It looks great on you.. actually all hats seem to! The Helen K ones are seriously beautiful ! I also love all the cute ones under $50. I think there’s so many great choices out there.. I didn’t plan on buying more hats when we started this! I’ve already have a few you chose here in carts. This was a lot of fun.

I have always loved hats. I even had a wedding hat when I married in 1975. I like Helen Kaminski, Stetson, Brixton, Baily. and San Diego Hat Co. I love to shop in Goorin’s in SF when there. I have packable felt and straw which sure beats having to wear it on the plane! I often like to buy hats on my travels. I reached for a fedora style in an elegant little hat shop in Lyon, France. It was a Stetson from USA! I always wear a garden hat and prefer 4″ brims to sunscreen on my face. True story: I was having lunch solo in the Ferry Building in SF. It was Halloween but very sunny and I wore my black fedora, a beautiful classic shape. It was very warm and I took off my black and blown jacket and was wearing a black tunic and leggings. An older man across the table from me started talking very loudly and calling me a witch! He wouldn’t stop!! I moved my tray across the room as far as I could go. Obviously he had some mental issues. The lovely people at Gott’s Roadside brought me another glass of cabernet. The guy then went off on “I didn’t know witches drank red wine. But this is California!” Obviously not in Kansas any longer. Being able to have a glass of wine in a quick burger place! Not the mental health issues of which, we too, have plenty. Hats often create great stories…just warning!

      Hi Patricia

Sounds like you may have run into a lunatic at Gotts. Have you tried the Elta MD sunscreen. It is a game-changer in my mind. It isn’t greasy or pore clogging like so many. I still get the occasional break out sadly. I have really grown to love hats since I grew my hair longer. I hever thought they looked very good when my hair was shorter. There are so many great places to find hats now. Lots of places to get into trouble.

Tula hats have been my fav and go to hats for years now. They are sized well for smaller heads and last for years even with constant daily wear.

Love all of your hats. I am a big fan of Helen Kaminski hats as well. As they can be pricey, I have been lucky to buy some on ebay. It’s worth checking out!

    Hi Cindy,
I love Wallerroo hats but I have one issue with most hats I buy…hat-head hair. I understand it is more important to screen your scalp and face from the sun but does anyone know if there’s a way to prevent hat-head hair? Or know of a hat that won’t cause your hairstyle to be ruined once indoors?
    xo,
    Karen

    • Sarah says

Hi Karen, you don’t say what style hair you have, but I have a similar issue with my thinner, straight hair. On a cruise a couple of years ago I wore a straw hat daily. Before putting it on, I would pull the sides of my hair up and twist them together a bit, then secure them to the top of my head with a small claw clip. That was all hidden under the crown of the hat, and when I took the hat off, my hair wasn’t flattened. I have also found that, before putting on a hat, if I part my hair on the opposite side from what I usually do, it’s often enough to retain some body and prevent hat head. I hope this helps!

    Hi Cindy,
I love your style and ideas so much…thank you! I need help with a particular fashion issue. I live in Fort Worth, Texas and my husband and I are in the cattle business and he is an Agricultural Banker. We have many occasions to wear nice western/cowboy boots. I have many pairs from dressy black to suede to peewee buckaroo, peewee cactus fun styles for when we Western swing. The problem is twofold: I am 59 and many events require dressy western attire. I don’t want to look silly or even ridiculous. I can’t wear the same type of dresses as before. Winter western is not hard to pull together but summer western attire is tricky. It’s really hot in our summers and jeans aren’t appealing then. Can you help with types of lightweight skirts and dresses to wear in summer for dressy and casual please? The second problem is styling a dress, skirt or cropped pant with short peewee boots…your help would be so appreciated!

What a great array of Summer Hats you’ve shared! I’m partial to the raffia ones myself. Love a neutral! And a wide brim is definitely the go in the warmer weather!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sarah

I am partial to the raffia ones as well. I particularly like the ones that are packable. I have had my Helen Kaminski’s for years.

Wallaroo hats are my favorite for sure. Have worn them for years. I love that they also come in petite sizing for women with smaller heads (search for “Wallaroo hats petite”on Amazon). My mother hated hats, but once she found the petite Wallaroo, she was a convert. Lovely colors and last for years. Very packable.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Beth

I agree about the wallaroo hats. They fit well and are well priced, a win, win in my book!!
