My Dining Room, TV storage hack and more

Happy Fathers Day to all the wonderful dads out there. I hope you all have a wonderful day with your families today. i am joining Mary Ann, and Annie and we are sharing our Sunday favorites, including my dining room, tv storage hack and more.

HEATHER BULLARD’S INGENIOUS HACK FOR HIDING THE GIANT TV

Do you follow Heather Bullard?  She is so creative and always has such wonderful ideas on her blog and Instagram. One of her recent posts really hit home.  Steve recently purchased a gargantuan tv for our new/old digs that nearly eats up the entire room.  I admit I am not a fan of giant TV screens. Our son went with him to purchase the TV and I nearly cried when they came home with the monstrosity.  I am still not happy about it, but  Heather’s hack gives me hope.

CROWDED KITCHEN AVOCADO, BLACKBERRY ARUGULA SALAD

I am making this salad from Crowded Kitchen for Fathers Day Brunch.  I can’t wait to try it. It is filled with everything I love. This version is made with vegan feta cheese.  We are not vegan so I will be making it with regular feta.

AMAZON PRIME DAY

I couldn’t even begin to dig through all the deals offered on Prime Day (which is officially June 21 & 22). If you have been wanting the Apple Air Pods, but don’t like the price tag, you might want to snag them here. They are $189 instead of $249. This is also a great day to order some of the magazines you have been wanting to try.  Just remember to cancel at the end of the given period if you have decided they aren’t for you.  I put an alert on my calendar the day before. Many are offered at just $6 and under for six months.  You can find the full list here. Architectural Digest, Southern Living, Elle Decor, Travel and Leisure, and many more are offered.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

I sometimes forget to check out Sundances Outlet.  If you check it regularly, you can really find some great deals before they sell out.

This week I spotted these gorgeous embroidered mules and built this week’s outfit around them. While shopping for Father’s Day at Tommy Bahama I spotted this hat.  This J Crew Beach Sweater earns high reviews. It’s always hard to find a lightweight sweater for summer evenings that is attractive. J Crew also has these linen pants that look very much like the Jenn pant from CP shades (that I love) at a much better price point. Love the woven bembien bag also from J Crew, and I rounded the outfit out with pretty inexpensive resin accessories from Banana Republic.  All items are linked below the graphic.

GIRLS LUNCH OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

Also, this linen duster is $49.99 at the Sundance Outlet.  I think it is a steal. Sundance is also having 20% off on selected shoes and sandals.  If you are a fan of Korkease and other comfort brands you might want to check out the sale here

HOUSE UPDATES

We are slowly but surely getting rooms together here.  We had ordered a round table for the dining room from Dovetail which came broken.  After much negotiation, we decided to keep it, Steve was able to repair it. I really like the table but it is a little white for me.  I think I may paint the bottom and possibly tweak the finish.  Here is a little sneak peek of the dining room.  I will take better pictures later as things become more complete. FYI thank you all for your suggestions on the built in.  I am currently working on styling it up as a small bar, more on that later.

The light fixture is from Lamps Plus here. The curtains from Pottery Barn, I have been very happy with for the price are still on sale. The rods are from Pottery Barn as well. The seagrass tray is also from PB here.I did not purchase the rings at Pottery Barn because they are cheaper on Ebay here.

That’s it for my Sunday favorites.  Thank you for reading My Dining Room, TV storage hack and more. You can find more of my Sunday favorites here. Now pop over and visit Annie and Mary Ann for more Sunday fun.

    Cindy,
I love the bargains you found for us. Great summer outfits.
I also love the dining room, as I knew I would. I love your style and I can’t wait to see the rest when you’re ready.

    Hi Cindy,
What is it with man and their TV’s? I hate that big blank black screen, but thank goodness ours in hidden on a side wall in the family room and I rarely go in there except to do my yoga, and I face the other way!
Your dining room is coming along nicely. Don’t you hate it when something finally is delivered and it’s damaged. UGH. any way, I think darkening it a bit will be great. Does the table have leaves to extend it to accommodate all the family?
I can’t wait to see more of your new to you home.
Love your outfit of the day, I can replicate it pretty well with stuff I already have, hallelujah because I better not buy another thing!!
    Have a great week!
    XO Heidi

Looks like your home is coming along nicely and beautifully. Love the dining room! I too love a round table, find it allows all at the table to be in the conversation. Where do you suggest I look for the blinds you use with the drapes? I look forward to seeing your blogs each week and love your style. We are of the same generation and that I admire.

  5. home before dark says

Well, this will be fun! Two men go out shopping for a new TV—what could possibly go wrong? I left my husband alone with the NEST installer. I ordered silver to go on a black wall. Simple. Sleek. Inobtrusive. I came in from gardening later that day and found to the two together had decided it should be mounted with the attached white backplate. The NEST guy couldn’t back until the next week. Every time I walked by the mess, I wanted to scream!!!! There are some times when the elephant is so large, it simply “pays” to chalk it up to “unfortunate” and give the offender away/sell and start over. Just sayin’…ha ha!
    (haha).

  6. Joni weBb says

I like the white table. As is. Love the dining room! I’m having trouble navigating the new blog. Yikes!!! It took me a few tries to find the new story. What am I doing wrong?

  7. Catherine says

I also hate the large tv hanging on the wall in a living room or bedroom. We have both. They seem to “loom” over the room! However, there are a number of solutions. There are several roll up style covers on Etsy priced around $400 but the cost would certainly vary depending on the dimensions of the TV. You can choose various art work or designs for the roll up shade. It would also be cool to use a vintage roll up school map. Pottery Barn has also carried a number of cabinet type solutions. I loved one made of rustic mango wood apparently made of vintage champagne riddling racks. Would buy that in a heartbeat but apparently it is no longer available. It is also my understanding that if you have a smart TV, there is an app where you can download various works of art and turn your TV into frame “like” TV. I have hung art around my living room TV and arranged an artistic vignette on the console below the TV. I have become accustomed to the TV but think I’ll try the app – with a little tech assistance from my son!

Good luck! Can’t wait to see more photos of the new digs!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Catherine

That riddling rack contraption that pottery barn had was great. I used that in a couple of client’s homes. We had the tv covered with vintage shutters before. However, this thing is beyond big. My daughter even commented how awful it is. I think almost anything in a room that size is just going to make it look worse sadly. My husband said he would make a cabinet out of old shutters again but unfortunately it is the “elephant in the room”

  8. Angela in New Zealand says

We painted the wall behind “the monstrosity” a very dark colour, blue in our case, to try and trick the eye. Best we could come up with without creating another monster size disguise.
Perhaps one day tv’s will disappear altogether and we’ll just be viewing via goggles?

  9. Mary from life at Bella Terra says

Cindy, I, too, do not like the look of a flat screen tv. The one in our family room is huge and I cannot WAIT to create a canvas like shown above. What a brilliant idea. Our tv in the master bedroom has an oil painting the rolls up into a frame, but I think it still looks a little bulky. So I am inspired to try the canvas idea. Thank you SO much for sharing. That salad…wow! And I need to check out the Sundance outlet….never seem to think about it. Love you Sunday post.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary

As I mentioned above I think the room just isn’t big enough to carry anything off. I honestly barely watch tv anymore because I can’t stand the sight of the thing. Thank god it is not above the fireplace where he planned to put it,

  10. wren says

The TV hack is so clever; I think this woman should try for a patent or some way to protect her “invention”.
Your house is looking good. I have always liked the burnt bamboo shades (my parents had some in the house I grew up in).
A question about the dining chairs on the hardwood floor. Do you have felt pads on the bottoms of the legs or some way to keep them from marring the floor? I like showing the wood but wonder if you will be getting an area rug?
    Thanks for the post~

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

Yes, we do have pads on the chairs and yes I am planning to get a rug as well. Good questions. I just haven’t ordered yet because we didn’t have a table!

  11. JoannA says

My husband did the same thing. At first I was upset by this monstrosity but you know, after I created an interesting vignette on the media center it was no longer such a big deal. I’m now used to it being there and it doesn’t bother me at all. The focus is on the fireplace wall, not the tv wall. Heather Bullard’s solution is ingenious. A friend has a tapestry hanging over her tv.
Your house is coming together nicely. I love your chandelier! I agree your table is a little too white for your aesthetic. I used a gel stain on a piece of furniture and it went on nicely.
    Happy Solstice!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna

I will probably do a gel stain or briwax. I just need to think about it for awhile. I also may just paint the base. I love all your suggestions. It always gives me food for thought!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janet

The buffet is a work in progress. I am looking for some vintage items to add to the mis, like a vintage cocktail shaker, spoons etc. Of course I can’t ever make it simple!!

  12. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I love your dining room! You have such a good eye! I can’t believe the light fixture is from Lamps Plus! And your table with your monogrammed chairs! It looks so beautiful! Everything, right down to the seagrass try with the pitcher of the perfect shade of hydrangeas! You are amazing! I love your outfit of the week and can envision you wearing it while arranging those flowers in the kitchen!

Heather’s TV solution is way better than the Frame TV!! may need to try this in our bedroom!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Annie

That tv hack has your name on it!! You should do it! Thank you so much for the sweet comments. You are always so encouraging!

  13. Gretchen says

Thank you for your blog. I am wondering how you were able to have your monogram on your chairs? If you have the time, would you explain how you did it?
    Thanks for taking the time.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gretchen

The chairs were custom made by my upholsterer. We ordered the frames, He measured and marked exactly where the monogram should go, then I had Trish from Cottage by Design, do the monograms. She is wonderful by the way. You can find her on Instagram!
