5 Gifts Your Man Will Love

THIS WEEK IN REVIEW

Happy Sunday and welcome to our five faves. As usual, I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie. This week let’s talk about 5 gifts your man will love, Tory Burch, Peter Penoyer, and much more.

If you missed the post “What’s in Your Makeup Bag” this week. You must read the comments. People are still weighing in. My audience is primarily women over 55, and they know their stuff when it comes to makeup. You will love all the helpful suggestions in the comments. Another post filled with comments was the post How to Wear Combat Boots over 50 that I did with my friend Brenda from 1010 Park Place. I knew this one would be filled with fun, that you would either love them or hate them. I did a poll on Instagram and thought you would enjoy the results 66% yes and 34% no. Several people could not find the link to the “very controversial skirt”. Here it is, It comes in many other colors and it is cheap!

It does come in many other colors by the way. The comments ranged from I would love one to you should leave the skirt for your granddaughter!

MARY ANN’S 65TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

Annie is doing an in-depth review of the party with recipes (she is the master photographer), and I have a feeling Mary Ann might be as well. I was too busy to take photos, so I will be brief with the group photo. Never underestimate the power of blogging and the friends you make. I can’t tell you how all of these ladies have enriched my life.

TORY BURCH

I Have to be honest, I have never been enthralled with Tory Burch’s clothing and accessory line. l I just don’t personally care for items with someone else’s initials all over them. If I want initials on a handbag, I want my own. I don’t condone others who love it, it’s just a personal hang-up of mine. When she came out with her spongeware dinnerware line I stood up and took notice here. I started following her on Instagram and this week I spotted this.

tory-burch-suit

I honestly wouldn’t wear the suit (nowhere to wear it), but the details on the skirt and the jacket are wonderful. You could wear them together more formally or independently. The jacket with the three different buttons GAH! I wasn’t going to do an outfit of the week this week but I couldn’t resist. The jacket is way too pricey for me, but for those of you that want something special for Christmas, you might consider it. Otherwise, just take away the great ideas. Maybe find an old Anthro or J Crew jacket on Ebay and sew on three interesting buttons! I am not a ruffle person but the details on this Ralph Lauren shirt are to die for. I would wear the jacket with jeans or simple black pants, velvet birdies, this inexpensive sterling monogram brooch from Amazon (a great Christmas gift by the way), a silver bracelet, and a simple cross-body bag.

GIFT GUIDE FOR HIM

Apparently, we are all supposed to be shopping early due to supply chain issues. I heard it from “one of the horses mouth” (one of Nordstrom’s suppliers) yesterday. Annie, Mary Ann, and I decided we would start incorporating gift guides (with 5 things) each Sunday (even though it seems so early). This week I am featuring five things Steve either loves or is on my radar for gifting.

Steve loves the Duke Cannon shaving cream and the UGG slippers. His feet get too hot in regular slippers so he likes the open back. He loves having cold water at work, so I think this cup with handle will be great for work or on the go. He really needs a waterproof jacket (hopefully we get a lot of rain this year). This one from Barbour is pricey but a classic and will last for years. This washable merino half zip from Nordstrom is $39.99 a steal! All items linked below graphic.

BALLARD HOW TO DECORATE PODCAST WITH PETER PENOYER

If you love Peter Penoyer’s work (you can check out his website here), you will love Ballard’s latest How to Decorate podcast. My friend Roxanne clued me in on this series. They are so good.

As always, a wonderful Five Fav post. Thank you for the great gift ideas. Still swooning over Mary Ann’s birthday party that you gave her, it was perfection. Not a fan of TB clothing, but I do love her handbags. Like Mary Ann said, they’re well made and last. I’ve been carrying her crossbody bag everyday, I’m not a purse changer, for 3 years and it still looks like new.

  2. LA CONTESSA says

NEVER GOT THE TB LOOK…………Her LOGO looks CHINESE TO ME.And I am NOT a FAN of CHINESE DECOR………..of any kind.Did my comment ever show up in the MAKE UP POST?!
    I shall go LOOK AGAIN!

    Hi Cindy,
I thought your frilled ballet skirt was fun and it would be a welcome addition, especially for a party. I can really use the tips on gifts this year. All the talk of lack of inventory has me a little stressed. But I’ve decided that all of us seem to be aware of it and that, like Covid Christmas, this Christmas will show us a jolly time whether we have all the gifts we could dream of or just one or two thoughtful gifts from our loved ones and family. Have a wonderful week. I hope we can make up some of the rain numbers this year.
    xo,
    Karen

    Hi cindy,
Wow, I can tell the way you decorated your table, the gorgeous looking cake and the way you styled yourself that you put so much thought and preparation into everything.
What a beautiful group picture of you girls.
I love your style, your skirt is unusual, but you pull it off so well. I think because of who you are you can get away with just about anything.
    I say you “go girl.”

  5. RobBie B. says

Love your blog! You are so generous with your sharing. Almost bought the tulle skirt but chickened out because while I’m in pretty good shape for 64, I’m curvy and I think it would make me look hippy ( as in wide)!
I thrifted a Tory Burch well made spring coat a few years ago., with a beautiful ikat/batik blue lining. that’s the only way I buy her brand. NO initials showing.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Robbie

FYI I have big hips too. We are on the same wave length with TB I would have to find on Ebay! Thanks for weighing in!!

  6. Wren says

Hi Pal! It’s interesting how the picture of the TB suit is styled with such strongly patterned surroundings. I think if you took away her head, bag and boots, it would look almost like part of the room decor.
I’m with you on the whole label thing. I always said that unless my initials were LV I wouldn’t be buying any but when I was gifted a wallet, I wasn’t too proud to accept. ; ) I have to say, it has held up well through much use over about 20 years.
Would you please make a house call to help me with my courtyard? At one time it was looking great but over time, things have changed and I just can’t get it looking as I would like. Your’s makes me envious!
Great looking group of women; what a fun gathering to celebrate a bday and new house. Cheers!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

Would love to see your digs sometime! I am not a big fan of initials but I totally understand others who are. I shared a RL blazer with his monogram stitched into the pocket today. For some reason, his doesn’t bother me. Maybe because he doesn’t usually plaster them all over the piece. It is more subtle. But hey I am fickle, don’t believe anything I say. I might change my mind tomorrow! My friend Deborah says she only likes vintage initials ha!

  7. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! You have the best eye! Best style! I love that TB jacket. It also comes in another color that I like. And three different buttons…how fun is that? We have a few amazing button stores in the city that I can’t wait to check out with this in mind! I’ve been gushing about the party, your garden, your home, what you wore all weekend long!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Annie

We had so much fun, didn’t we? It was such a nice break, even though we did get some work done!! That blazer really caught my eye. A style to copy.

  8. Sharon says

I too have not been a fan of Tory Burch clothing but adore the design of her many homes! I love the dinnerware she offers in sponge and lettuce ware. Your garden is truly an amazing “after” and we copied your fountain idea from the Pot Stop! I learn something new with every blog post you send so THANK YOU!!!!

    • Michel says

Hi Cindy – love your blog posts and I’m amazed at everything you have done in a short time ! I will have to reread the makeup post and comments. Thank you for the podcast recommendation- I love a good podcast and I had no idea Ballard had one!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Michel

Those Ballard podcasts are good. I miss one now and then but I think you would enjoy. So glad you enjoy the blog.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sharon

So glad you were able to copy the fountain! I love her spatterware too. I have a few salad plates and have been tempted to buy more, but guess what I have no room!!

  9. Karen says

    Cindy:
I am so with ya, on the Initials, want my own.
Love the Jacket , omg Buttons, geez Kaching

I could replicate it, find the awesome fabric and sew one.

The gift guide is Grrrreat, all John asks for is the newest and latest Tools, Equipment, Clothing, Coats, Shoes are a Chore, due to height, not a lot of selection out there.

  10. Mary Ann Pickett says

I thank you for that gift guide (and Howard will have to thank you, too). Where to store early Christmas presents might be tough. I like Tory Burch’s quality. I have a crossbody bag with a small emblem…it holds up so well as I am tough on purses.
Thanks again for an amazing party. It was so fun. Yours is next!

  11. home before dark says

So agree on everything!I like my initials but I don’t need them plastered everywhere. That and the fact that phd in a university town when I’m not a phd is flack catching. What makes that worst is that my husband is JD and is a JD. I’m such a failure! I have collected buttons since I was a child. They are little works of art. Like the jacket’s use of them. Looks like all of the lovelies had a lovely time…including the feral cat!I still can’t believe all you and Steve have accomplished. You and your garden look “well collected”.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Patricia

So good to hear from you. I knew you would have an opinion about the combat boots. I think that Tory jacket is clever. It would be very easy to duplicate with some interesting buttons. Thanks for popping in. I have missed your humor!!

  12. Susan Kelley says

I happen to like Tory’s stuff and Kate Spade too!(most but no all)But can understand why you might not!She does put together some great fabric ideas and combos, buttons?I do like initials on shoes(who looks at your feet?), but not on every thing else. You have a very specific style, that not everyone can carry off. I have looked into the Artimis shoes on your recommendation( i am a shoe person) and some of the house wears you have featured. But isn’t that why we have a choice, everything not necessarily for everyone!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan

Absolutely! I guess my point on Tory Burch was I had a predisposed conception of what she does, and have found I really like some of her things. We always need to keep our eyes and minds open to new ideas and opinions. When we get set in our ways, we age ourselves. Never say never, right? By the way I adore her tableware.

  13. Sue Reiner says

LOVED your frilly skirt!!! Live outside the box that mature ladies are placed in. Fashion is here to have fun with an not taken so seriously. You seem to enjoy your life an live in freedom to be you. I love that concept ❤️❤️❤️

  14. Gray says

I agree with you – the jacket is so great. I do like a lot of her clothing but her stuff is too pricey for me, and I never understood the shoe logo thing.

  15. Francesca Browder says

Love the post thank you and especially the gift ideas for the holidays. Like you the initial’s of Tory Burch on her clothing infuriates me and l also wish she would use older models and celebrate the older woman.. But honestly l find her clothes too expensive and elitist and so look elsewhere.
    Happy week Cindy 🙂

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca

I can’t help but agree with your Tory comments but that jacket just got me! Too expensive but steal those ideas!! Maybe I meant to do a copy cat look as well but ran out of time! And yes! Why doesn’t she ever use older models darn it?
