Beat the Heat in Style with these Summer Outfits

The dog days of summer are here, with those come the delightful challenge of staying stylish when the temperatures soar! I don’t know about you, but as much as I adore long, sunny days, dressing comfortably without sacrificing style can sometimes be a challenge. I want to share some of my favorite pieces for beating the heat in style this season. From breezy fabrics to minimal accessories, I’ve rounded up the outfits that keep me feeling cool, confident, and put-together, no matter how high the temperature rises. Let’s chat about how to beat the heat in style with these summer outfits.

Your Breezy Fabric Best Buddies

Avoid synthetics and go for natural fabrics if you want to stay cool, calm and stylish.

Linen

I know it is a love hate relationship with many of you. Of course it wrinkles but think of it as wrinkling “stylishly”! I penned a post Best Cool Summer Linen Looks for Women Over 50 with many more linen favorites.

Quince Linen PJ's

This is the year of the “pj” look. We either love them or hate them. These are actuall pj’s from Quince (that are super reasonable). Can you tell the difference? I own them in black and flax. The hat and bag are from Janessa Leone. They are both pricey but I have carted them all over the US in the past few years. My flip flops are from Fitflop. I just ordered a new pair because I have worn mine out.

Cotton & Cotton Poplin

The reliable breathable staple that keeps you cool with less wrinkling than linen.

Gap Outlet cotton blend skirt J McCloughlin Linen Shirt

I have a mix of high and low here. The linen shirt was gifted from J McClaughlin. The cotton-linen blend skirt is from Gap, The packable bag is from Mar Y Sol and I have owned it for years.

Untucked Cotton Dress

I was gifted this poplin dress from Untuckit, and it is currently on sale. My inexpensive bag is from Mersea, and my sandals from Laid Back London.

Cotton Gauze

In my opinion the absolute easiest, coolest, and most casual of all summer fabrics is cotton gauze. You might enjoy my post Chic Summer Gauze Separates for Women Over 60.

Talbots Gauze two piece set

I featured these pants, and this top in my gauze post. I ordered petite small in the pants, and a regular small in the top. I think I could have ordered the regular size in the pants. I could have worn a medium in the top as well forr a little more room. I styled them with my packable Helen Kaminski hat, packable Mar Y Sol bag, and Dolce Vita raffia sandals. I really like these gauze pants and this gauze top (set), and this jacket as well from Talbots.

J Jill Cotton Gauze Dress

I featured this J Jill gauze dress in one of my outfits of the week as well here. It is no longer available in navy but a pretty blue and coral colorway. I am wearing a small. I don’t normally wear navy but I love this dress. I paired it with these beek sandals, and this MZ Wallace bag, similar here. I found both my sandals and bag on eBay last season.

Silhouette Suggestions

The Maxi

The “mighty maxi” offers maximum airflow and effortless elegance.

cp shades lily skirt and Jack shirt tied at the waist

The Cp Shades lily skirt has long been a favorite of mine (available on sale in black and brown here). Grap them while you can sadly CP Shades is going out of business before the end of the year. Quince has a nice whit maxi here for a great price. I paired the skirt with a linen shirt (similar here size up for a looser look), and old laid back london sandals similar here. Poshmark has some here.

J Crew black linen maxi dress

This J Crew cabana dress is great for travel. You can wear it as a coverup or dress it up for dinner. Here I am styling it with my Janessa Leone bag that can also be worn as a backpack. It will also hold your hat between the front straps.

The Midi

This Frank and Eileen dress, (I am wearing a small) is great with sneakers, or belted (similar here), with a bag from Madewell here, sandals and a very old (on poshmark) Helen Kaminski hat. .

Wide Leg Trousers

Similar to the maxi, lots of airflow and comfort.

Frank and Eileen Tuscany Set

I get compliments on the Frank and Eileen set whenever I wear it. It fits beautifully without any alterations. I am wearing a small. I don’t iron mine. I stretch and pull it out of the washer and hang it dry. I have three more reasonably priced sets that I have purchased from Quince in green, black, and natural. You can purchase the shirt here. and the pants here. You can see all three colors in my post Best Cool Summer Linen Looks for Women over 50.

Oversized Shirts and Flowy Blouses

Rachel Behrens Blouse Eileen Fisher Linen Pants

This cute blouse was gifted from Rachel Behrens. It is currently on sale (I am wearing a small). The pants similar from Eileen Fisher here. The bag and shoes were linked above.

My friend Mary Ann has a post on cute summer separates on sale which she is sharing with her darling friend Mercedes here.

  1. Cindy! Love your style and have only recently discovered gauze! It’s so great for travel! Pinned!

  2. Cindy I appreciate your blogs, read them all. I admire your sense of style. Everything you show us is beautifully worn and accessorized and you have such a beautiful smile. Thank you for your blogs.

  3. You go Donnie! Like you Cindy, I live in my cotton gauze and linen in the heat. You look like you may be a winter as you look terrific in the black Quince PJs! I have it in navy as I can’t wear black at all. I bought mine last year. I use navy as my dark neutral and wear a lot of white and faded flax as my summer neutral. It has been too hot to wear denim yet this summer until today! At 64 degrees, I wore light weight jeans and tee. It is only a couple of day’s reprieve before the heat comes back. I so agree with you on linen, and cotton gauze for this much hotter summer.

  4. Cindy Appreciate this posting as I do all of them! Gauze and linen dresses for home have been my mainstay for about three years now, having discovered a sort of babydoll style at J Crew then. I went back and purchased four in all the colors! that year and also something similar at Target in tee shirt fabric. To leave for an errand or activity I am trying to collect a few pieces of linen from J Crew to use. This is such a change for me but a good one. My sister calls them ‘house dresses’ but they are so comfortable and not see through so I can garden outside and be appropriate in my community.. I have also found linen above the knee pants at Old Navy in the last few years that are really functional.I am 83 but my handyman thinks I am 55..yeah!

    1. Hi Donnie

Do you remember laidies we thought were old (who were probably our age ha ha) wearing house dresses back in the day! I know what your sister means! I found some great casual pants that I wear out walking, working in the yard etc at Urban Outfitters! I will link them on my Sunday favorites!
