Holiday Decor & Tableware

’m not a big fan of holiday-specific dinnerware or paper napkins because it tends to have limited use. A budget-friendly and straightforward way to elevate your Memorial Day tablescape is by swapping out your salad plates or napkins. Instead of investing in pricey dishes adorned with American flags, turkeys, or Christmas trees, opt for colorful pieces (in patriotic colors for Summer)  that can work for multiple occasions. Blue or red salad or dinner plates (if you already own them), for example, can be used for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July (all the patriotic holidays), or even festive winter gatherings, giving you more versatility without overspending. Rattan chargers and napkin rings can be added to your red napkins and used throughout summer and beyond. Check out your local garage sale, dollar store, and thrift stores for patriotic decorations. You don’t have to spend a fortune to set a beautiful table with patriotic flair and your personal touch. Surprise your party guests by making your place cards on Canva for your place settings is a fun easy way to add your own festive touch to the memorial day gatherings for your dinner guests.

Patriotic Playlist

Cindy Hattersley's patriotic playlist

Every year when I publish this list there is discussion about particular songs on this list and whether or not they are patriotic. This is a list of songs about America that I enjoy. I realize everyone’s view of what is patriotic and what is not. I could title it songs about America, but no one would be able to find it. It is merely a list of songs that you may enjoy for the summer holidays.

    1. Hi Martha

Oh my I didn’t realize your grandson and Summer are similar ages!! Too bad we don’t live close a playdate would be in order!

  3. I visited my grandsons this weekend and can’t believe the younger one will be 8 in June! It’s almost scary how fast they have gotten here from babies. As much fun as they are now, I love the cuddly baby stage and didn’t get enough. Summer is a darling, on her way to becoming a beautiful young woman.

  4. Cindy! Love your festive tables and outfits! I can’t believe Summer is 7!!

  6. Thanks for sharing the playlist and the denim jacket sale. Sadly only the XS and XXS are left in stock…

Also, I have come across a number of fashion articles on fashion over 60 where there are post of you. They are not on your blog, nor do they identify or link to you. They are all on articles on MSN.com and again showing on fashion over 60 links. You as well as some of the bloggers you are associated with are shown modeling fashion. One of those women had problems in the past with someone stealing and posting her content without permission. I thought you might be interested in case you are unaware…

  7. Hi Cindy,
Love the playlist thank you friend. Happy Birthday to Summer she is such a joy and it’s so lovely to see her growing up! I long for grandkids!! Gorgeous Madewell dress. I just bought the green Heidi dress you recommended last Sunday and it’s gorgeous thank you for that. Have a lovely week xo

  8. Hi Cindy,
The playlist looks great, thank you for sharing this with us.
Summer has a beautiful smile, it’s hard for me too to believe she turned 7. Summer looks like she is full of energy and lots of fun. To top it all off she is blessed to have a good family that adore her.

  9. Cindy!
Your Summer’s smile says it all. How fortunate she is to have loving family who nurture her darling spirit.
Your table scapes inspire because napkins and salad plates are reachable for summer fun in retirement living. I find our white plates fill in the gaps along with selected blue transfer ware.

    Thank you for inspiring us,

  10. Such a joy to watch Summer grow. I love all the songs on your playlist and won’t let current continuousness ruin any of them for me. Thanks for the grilling ideas. Happy Sunday! xo

  11. Had to laugh at the first song on playlist, Born in the USA, after he slammed America while in England. No thanks Bruce. You knocked yourself off my list.
Lovely ideas for making the holiday themed entertaining less specific and using things that span several seasons and holidays. Love the jeans and red blouse outfit suggestion!

      1. Although not American, you do have some wonderful patriotic songs. I have always liked the Battle Hymn of the Republic and I remember after 9/11, America the Beautiful (at an awards ceremony) was played – very moving. Had to laugh at Keith Urban’s inclusion though. He is a Kiwi (by birth) and both a naturalised American and a naturalised Australian. Truly a ‘man for all seasons’. Love your table settings as they always inspire me to lift my game

        1. The Battle Hymn of the Republic was the recessional hymn played at both my parents funerals, at their requests. It’s in the Catholic hymnal and probably hymnals of other Christian religions but it sure is a rousing end to a funeral!!
Hallelujah was written and originally performed by Leonard Cohen who was most decidedly not American and very much a Canadian and Montréaler. It’s a great song but I can’t see how it’s in anyway associated with the US or Memorial Day.

          1. Hi Ally

Yes I know the Leonard Cohen version very well, and there have been many renditions of it also good. I happen to like the song. I realize it may not be patriotic, but I always have it on my list. Anyone can omit any they don’t enjoy.

        2. Hi Susan

I love Keith Urban. My daughter and I attended one of his concerts several years ago.

    1. I thought Bruce was spot on and I am happy he used his platform to show how much in danger we are of losing our precious democracy. I am not looking to start a quarrel with anyone but Bruce has a very different view of the current situation in our country. He speaks from the heart.

      1. I love Bruce and his music. If we gave up on everyone for their political views…ahhhh what a sad world it would be..

  12. Summer is so adorable…what a joy. Thanks for the grilling recipes!
