A Lake Michigan Summer: What to Grill, Wear, and Drink Right Now
I grew up in the Midwest and many escaped to Lake Michigan in the summer to cool off. I have fond memories of the beautiful homes on Mackinak Island. and the like. This week I am dreaming of a lake michigan summer: what to grill, wear, and drink right now.
Nostalgic Summer House on the Shores of Lake Michigan
This Tom Stringer designed lakeside home in House and Garden in cool blues and greens and filled with family heirlooms and antiques has my heart.

On the Grill: Skirt Steak and Asparagus with Salsa de Semillas
This is another one of my daughter-in-law’s recipes. It’s the kind of dinner fit for a lake house and I am making it this week.

Skirt steak takes almost no time and a hot grill does all the work, a few minutes a side, rest it, slice it against the grain. The asparagus goes on alongside, just enough olive oil and salt to char at the tips. But the real reason to make this is the salsa de semillas,a seed-and-herb salsa, usually pepitas, sesame, a little garlic, chile, lime, and a good glug of olive oil, all blitzed or hand-chopped into something bright and a little nutty. Spoon it over everything. It’s the kind of sauce that makes people ask for the recipe before they’ve finished the first bite.

Wear: Cool Linen
If there’s one uniform for a lake summer, it’s linen.

Drink: Oprah’s 26 Easy Summer Cocktails
Last night we had dinner at In Bloom. It was so hot we all opted for a cool cocktail. I came home determined to up my cocktail game. Oprah’s 26 Easy Summer Cocktails has something for everyone.
That’s the scene here this week ,steak smoke drifting off the grill, line catching what little breeze there is, and ice melting faster than anyone can drink around it. If you’ve got your own version of a lake summer, I’d love to hear what’s on your porch table.
Now let’s pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie for their summer favorites.

Hi Cindy—Do you have a link for the Skirt Steak recipe?
Hi Cindy,
I have just finished “Land” and it was a very enjoyable read. I just could not stop reading and had a day last weekend when it was all I did! Summer bliss. Also enjoyed “Villa Coco” tremendously and the community work that happens when the olives “come in” highlighted in “Under The Tuscan Sun.” I am wearing so much linen and it’s so timeless and perfect for these hot summers we are all experiencing. That’s a pretty blue you found at J .Jill! Keep cool friend!
Happy Sunday, Cindy! I’m settling in to pour over (and download) T&C’s book recs and Oprah’s cocktails while pretending I’m at the lake. xo
Thanks for this. Do you have links for the linen items and necklace?
