So many of Jenna & Kelly’s contemporaries have opted for “instant decor”, a look easily achieved by ordering from one of the “big box” decor stores. They have busy lives and want to spend their spare time doing what they love. I get it. Kelly and Jon have opted for a more collected personal look. It is hip and stylish yet their home has soul. On weekends you will probably find them culling the Alameda Flea Market or local resale stores for treasures for their home.

They enjoy spending weekends doing home projects. Kelly came up with the idea of this built in and Jon (a lawyer by day) researched and executed it.

Recently Kelly agreed to let us in on some of her design tricks and tips and where she finds her inspiration.
What is your personal style
Chic, rock’n’roll, heavy on vintage, with a dash of SF utilitarianism. In much the same way, my design style is a little boho, a little goth, a little global, layered over the traditional bones of my house in a way that feels eclectic and collected.
What or Who Inspires you?

I wanted an old house with character, and what we ended up getting was a quirky 1906 Victorian. Though it’s small, you really feel its history. (And it’s all good vibes—no scary ghosts in there.) I’m nuts about the old details that remain—the crown molding, the built-ins, the beadboard, the five-panel doors. Our house has lived many lives and I love that. I’m also kind of plant-crazy, so I’m practically growing an interior jungle, which makes me really happy. I have a handful of the bigger guys like a fiddle-leaf fig, a rubber plant, tall cactuses, and a couple of split-leaf philodendrons. And I have smaller ones on different surfaces—tables, counters—like cacti, ferns, air plants, and vines. (I also have a thing for carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps).

Kelly and Jon have many plans for reno projects for their home. They are hoping to remodel their kitchen next. Meanwhile check out the Refinery 29 Article for information on how they made some simple changes (hint they painted their tile) to “make do” until they can do a full scale remodel.

Here are some pictures and sources for their newly remodeled bathroom. Note how Kelly has used white walls and accents of black throughout her home. The black and white palette ties together the seemingly diverse items into a more collected cohesive look.
With the help of an architect, contractor, and structural engineer (everyone needs professional help sometimes!) they carved this tiny bath out of what was previously a linen closet.
Kelly and Jon with the help of an architect, builder, and structural engineer carved out this tiny bathroom from what was once a linen closet. They ended up dormering the roof to make it work. They sourced all of the finishes themselves. Jon came up for the tile design for the shower.

Tile pattern – really? He made up a herringbone all by himself? I am so impressed.
Cindy says
Hi Anon
There is nothing unusual about a herringbone pattern but you may know if you have done tile work that laying out a herringbone pattern and working into the overal scheme can be tricky.

The tile in the shower looks like the bricks in my kitchen which my husband did when I took the little BOYS to ITALY for the summer……………we use to camp at the beach for two months when the boys were small.CAMPING in ITALY is totally different then camping HERE!WE had a fruit and green vendor, a butcher an ice cream shop and a PIZZIERIA!
I JUST WONDER IF SHE PICKED UP A FEW TRICKS OF THE TRADE FROM YOU GROWING UP!!!!!!!!!!

Love her free spirited style, things gathered and pulled together in a collective liking.
Love the niche with the haring bone pattern, richly simple in design, and so functional.
I have got to break away from my style a bit and mix it up…looking to add a bit of black back into my style.
Starting with a pillow will encourage a lot more I am sure.
Looking forward to your Friday flea market as well.
Xx
