The Stylish Bernal Heights Digs of Kelly Lack & Jon Solorzano

First off I would like to thank Kelly for graciously allowing me to interview her.  I spotted her darling house on Refinery 29 (you can read more about it here). She and my daughter were childhood friends, and swam and played waterpolo together from the time they were tots.  I have watched Kelly grow up. When Kelly and Jon married in Big Sur several years ago we got a peek at what was to become her bespoke signature style. Let’s take a peek at her stylish bernal heights home.

So many of Jenna & Kelly’s contemporaries have opted for “instant decor”, a look easily achieved by ordering from one of the “big box” decor stores. They have busy lives and want to spend their spare time doing what they love. I get it.  Kelly and Jon have opted for a more collected personal look.  It is hip and stylish yet their home has soul. On weekends you will probably find them culling the Alameda Flea Market or local resale stores for treasures for their home.

They enjoy spending weekends doing home projects.  Kelly came up with the idea of this built in and Jon (a lawyer by day) researched and executed it.

Recently Kelly agreed to let us in on some of her design tricks and tips and where she finds her inspiration.

What is your personal style
Chic, rock’n’roll, heavy on vintage, with a dash of SF utilitarianism. In much the same way, my design style is a little boho, a little goth, a little global, layered over the traditional bones of my house in a way that feels eclectic and collected.

What or Who Inspires you?

The first thing that comes to mind is travel. It’s the obvious answer, but totally true. Almost everything in my house comes with a story whether it was a piece we scored abroad or dug up at a flea market or antique shop. I love seeing the colors and patterns that people across the world incorporate into their day-to-day lives whether its a wrap they have tied around their waist or their baby, or the crazy colors the taxis are painted. But it’s not just the pretty stuff. I also get really excited by those more utilitarian items like spice grinders or wood spoons or planters.

What do you love most about your home

I wanted an old house with character, and what we ended up getting was a quirky 1906 Victorian. Though it’s small, you really feel its history. (And it’s all good vibes—no scary ghosts in there.) I’m nuts about the old details that remain—the crown molding, the built-ins, the beadboard, the five-panel doors. Our house has lived many lives and I love that. I’m also kind of plant-crazy, so I’m practically growing an interior jungle, which makes me really happy. I have a handful of the bigger guys like a fiddle-leaf fig, a rubber plant, tall cactuses, and a couple of split-leaf philodendrons. And I have smaller ones on different surfaces—tables, counters—like cacti, ferns, air plants, and vines. (I also have a thing for carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps).

Style or Design Icon
In terms of home design, my all-time favorite designer is Portland-based Jessica Helgerson. My husband and I reference her work constantly. I think my love of elegant hits of black comes from her. I interviewed her not once but twice for One Kings Lane, where I worked last before Spot.

Kelly and Jon have many plans for reno  projects for their home.  They are hoping to remodel their kitchen next. Meanwhile check out the Refinery 29 Article for information on how they made some simple changes (hint they painted their tile) to “make do” until they can do a full scale remodel.

Here are some pictures and sources for their newly remodeled bathroom. Note how Kelly has used white walls and accents of black throughout her home. The black and white palette ties together the seemingly diverse items into a more collected cohesive look.

With the help of an architect, contractor, and structural engineer (everyone needs professional help sometimes!) they carved this tiny bath out of what was previously a linen closet.

Kelly and Jon with the help of an architect, builder, and structural engineer carved out this tiny bathroom from what was once a linen closet. They ended up dormering the roof to make it work. They sourced all of the finishes themselves. Jon came up for the tile design for the shower.

The art above the toilet is a gold-leaf and line-drawing collage of a semi-nude girl that Kelly finds so “arresting and elegant”. “The hanging plant is called a senecio radican, and it’s in a DIY hanging planter. We found that geodesic planter at HomeGoods, and Jon spray-painted it pure white and added brass chains + hooks to attach hang it from the ceiling”.

If Kelly can’t find something vintage to fit her needs she is not above sourcing the usual haunts. She found the shampoo and soap canisters from Target as well as the bathmat. The angled mirror however was sourced from an antique shop in nearby Sebastapool.

I hope you have enjoyed Kelly’s tips and tricks for creating a well curated home. Kelly honed her ability to edit and combine diverse objects, eras, and textures during her stints at Martha Stewart and One Kings Lane.  Now she has taken on a new challenge as content and community lead for new startup Spot.  Come back on Monday to find out more about Spot,, why you need to check it out, and how Kelly will use her skills in her new position.

You might want to follow Kelly on Instagram. She has a wonderful IG feed here.  She also offers some great IG photo editing tips here.

For my Friday fun stuff I am going to have a Friday Flea.  There will be pillows, fabrics, and who knows what else at flea market prices.  Come by and check it out!

      Hi Anon

There is nothing unusual about a herringbone pattern but you may know if you have done tile work that laying out a herringbone pattern and working into the overal scheme can be tricky.

    "Everything has a story!"
The tile in the shower looks like the bricks in my kitchen which my husband did when I took the little BOYS to ITALY for the summer……………we use to camp at the beach for two months when the boys were small.CAMPING in ITALY is totally different then camping HERE!WE had a fruit and green vendor, a butcher an ice cream shop and a PIZZIERIA!
I JUST WONDER IF SHE PICKED UP A FEW TRICKS OF THE TRADE FROM YOU GROWING UP!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly so envious of your home. It has so much style and edge.I love all your ethnic pieces. I love the window seat with the built in bookshelves and that awesome rug. Congrats on all your success! Can't believe you worked at One Kings Lane. I managed 501 2nd St.where they started out. They wereally only about 10 people when they first moved in. Small World. So glad my mom connected with you so we all get to see your beautiful home.

Love her free spirited style, things gathered and pulled together in a collective liking.
Love the niche with the haring bone pattern, richly simple in design, and so functional.
I have got to break away from my style a bit and mix it up…looking to add a bit of black back into my style.
Starting with a pillow will encourage a lot more I am sure.

Looking forward to your Friday flea market as well.

    Xx

Love her style! And those built-ins look so familiar…I just did something similar with my Dad recently. I need to do a post on it but I've been under the weather. I can't wait to visit your Friday Flea, sounds like you've been busy.
    🙂
    hugs,
    Leslie
