Simple Ways to Refresh Your Living Room for Spring

If you are ready for Spring raise your hand?!  Today Mary Ann, Annie, and I are joining an amazing group of home decor bloggers and we are going to show you how we zhush up our living rooms for Spring.  I don’t honestly have a living room but have two family rooms but let’s take a look at some simple ways to refresh your living room for Spring.

Simple Ways to refresh your living room for spring

I don’t buy a lot of new things for these little projects.  I try to only buy and collect things I love so when one of these projects comes along it forces me to think out of the box and use the things I have in a new way or in a new space.  That is the beauty of collecting.

Here are five simple ways that I refreshed my living room for Spring.

# 1 Redo Your Coffee Table

Once you get rid of the “christmas crap” leave it blank for a bit and rethink it. It is always great to start with a blank slate.

I added “Spring blooms” and fruit and kept the top very simple. I arranged my lemons in an old Romanian pottery bowl, my “blooms” in a Vintage Hungarian Pickling Jar.  I have these in several sizes.  Flowers always look pretty in these.  I find I like things simpler after Christmas.  FYI my spring blooms and fruit are faux I have to confess.  I don’t mind a little faux when they look good! I add fresh flowers when I have guests but this time of year there is not a lot blooming in my garden. I added a fresh spring candle (thanks Kim ) My friend Kim gave me this for Christmas and I adore it! On the bottom of my coffee table, I added some Japanese fishing floats to my bowl (replacing the winter nuts)

#2 Bring out your Spring throws

I have charcoal cashmere throws that I use for winter.  I love these herringbone throws from Sferra for Spring.  They are soft, lightweight, durable and they come in almost every color of the rainbow.

#3 Freshen Up Your Mantel

I added the salmon doors last spring (they came off a cupboard we have upstairs) and the black and white faux art. For this Spring refresh I shopped my closet and added the green vent (that gets moved around my house) an old bag from Turkey (a gift from our brother and sister in law years ago) and a folk art man that we have had for at least 30 years. I am all about layering.  Collect interesting objects and you will always find a place for them.  You can see my fall mantle here, and my Christmas mantle here. I am sure I will get tired of these doors eventually but I am loving the splash of salmon right now.

#4 Lighten up your photo frames

If you have heavier frames in the winter lighten them up for Spring.  I love bone frames. You can pick them up in inexpensive stores like World Market and Target. Most of these frames are from Target and are really inexpensive.  They are linked below.  I have them all over my house.

We bought this beautiful French Brides box at Roundtop last Fall.  I was inspired to make that area a little more cheerful. Isn’t it a beauty?

#5 Add New Lampshades

I love that the colors of the box echo those in the room.  The lamps behind the sofa were just kind of a blah kind of greige.  I lightened them up by painting them white and adding gold. I still am not happy with them. I had intended to switch them with ones I have at the lake but have not made it down for the switch.  I still plan to do that this weekend.  I had custom shades made by @sassyshades in a block print on Etsy. I also pulled in a couple of chairs that came from @perchdecor, and an old Mexican console table of mine that I just retrieved from my daughter’s house. I am channeling Ana Spiro with all this color and I am liking it for Spring.

Here is a peek at the corner of my “living room” that I don’t think I have ever photographed.  I didn’t change a thing here and to be honest this cupboard with the redware has been with us since before we built this house.  We bought it in Wiscasset, Maine years ago. I like it just the way it is.

Cindy I have been terribly remiss in not telling you how much I love your blog. My daughter Susanne insisted I would be thrilled and as usual she was right! Every time I see your name in my emails I ignore all and go straight to you. i love it all….no matter what the subject. I’ve decided you must stay up all night just to give us pleasure. Thank you, Cindy!

Hi Cindy! I love that you have shown us this corner of the living room with the cupboard of redware – it is just lovely, and I would feel so at home in here with the mix of so many vintage things with character. I could use a sunny Cali day with flowers from the garden right now! Thanks for always sharing with such authenticity and ease…you’re such a lovely ray of light in blogland. xox

    Cindy,
I know I say this with every new series, but this particular feature is one of my all-time favorites. I’m ready for spring, even though Southern California has felt pretty chilly lately. There’s always an abundance of inspiration in these posts and you are the first one I’ve visited of the talented ladies. Must be off to visit more wonderful refreshed rooms. 🙂
    xo,
    Karen

Cindy you have collections like no other! I love how you put vignettes together. I am such a minimalist except for books, until I see how you layer art and shutters and objects! You’re so good at styling and I learn so much from studying how you put a room together – thank. you for sharing your artistry of design! And thank you for inviting me to join you this month – it was such fun and I loved reading all the posts, all so varied! XO

Well, waiting for some snow early a.m. here in the mountains of north Ga. Don’t expect much ,if any accumulation ,which is disappointing ! Even as my now role of LaLa , I anxiously await each flake with my sled😂! Meanwhile, In my mind , prep is in place for the great “Zhush “ (new fav word) of Spring decor! Next weekend here is our annual Fire and Ice Festival. It is a chili cook off and amazing ice sculptures all around town! Always a favorite wintertime weekend around here. Glad to know you’ve already put out a fresh bowl of lemons. Thinking I will initially add some eucalyptus with that for a refreshing mood changer ! Soon, I will be doing the same. Thanks for the mental boost that spring is on its way. Might just add some interesting new color here! Thanks for the inspiration!

Cindy, I love your casual style…which makes sense that you say you have two family rooms and no living room. I adore the way you mix in interesting textiles, a big bowl of lemons and a gorgeous vase of spring flowers. Nothing is overly fancy and that’s why it’s so perfect! Your home looks so inviting and you can just imagine all the great conversations and celebrations that happened in these gorgeous spaces.

Nothing. Not a thing has inspired envy for me in years. Then you have to show that gobsmacking gorgeous French chest. Perfection! When the colors shift to peach, apricot, salmon, orange, I hope right off that part of the color wheel. In your home, these colors look fresh, vibrant and glowing. And I bet they look even better close up with your California light.

      Hi Patricia

I know that box is wonderful. I saw it when I first entered Marburger and I thought about it for a day and then wham! Off it went to my house! I have had to embrace the salmon in the ancient paver floors instead of fighting it. Pink or salmon is not normally my jam either but I like it in there for some reason!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim
I know that box got me at hello! I just couldn’t pass it up even though I did not need another box!! Thank you so much for the kind words. You know I love your beautiful home!

The flowers are faux! They are from Winward Silks the best faux out there in my opinion! I have nothing blooming in my garden right now! Nada!!

Cindy….the colors on the mantel coordinated with the blooms…LOVE it! It’s breathtaking. The lamp shades are so pretty. Definitely the Layered Look here and I love it. Thanks for organizing!

Thank you so much pal….love your new pillows…that view how can you miss? Your apartment living room is one of the most charming places on earth!

Cindy your home is such a reflection of you. It just resonates ease and beauty and coziness. I need to come back and just browse over the vignettes which all are composed of a texture and personal story of their own. You inspired me to change out my lamp shades too. Just perfect. The entire room. What can i say? Also. One of these days I’ve got to get up North and join you and Elizabeth and Mary Ann for a girls wine fest. …

I absolutely love every picture of your home that you post! I love your style. I, also, love the salmon/coral pillows, what is the source?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gail
They are from Etsy One Affirmation but she doesn’t have them anymore. I am sure if you search you can find them. I found similar ones but not in terra cotta. Good Luck I would have linked them if I could have found them!!

Like Amanda, I’m wild about the bride’s box! I live in San Antonio and often go to Round Top and have seen German and Mexican bride or wedding boxes. I love how you adhere to your soft color palette. xoxo, Brenda

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Brenda
I should tell a funny story about that box. My husband is obsessed with boxes. We have way too many! Before we went to Round Top I said to him no boxes, agreed? Guess who came home with three boxes, and two of them were my idea

  15. AManda says

    Cindy,

Loved all of these ideas. That box you got at Round Too ~ Wonderful! BTW I am only 70 miles from Round Top so if you attend this spring or fall I would love to fix you dinner or brunch one evening/morning. Just let me know.

Take care and happy, happy Spring.
    Amanda

    • Cindy Hattersley says

I would love that Amanda! I cannot make it in the Spring but would love to come in the fall. I would love to get a group of ladies together again! That box was covered with a lot of grunge. I cleaned it up with cotton cleanser and it really popped!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Barbara
My sofas are from a company that no longer exists. They are very similar to the Pottery Barn sofa linked above. They are in a performance fabric. If you buy Pottery Barn you need to buy the best cushions etc. that you can, their basic models do not hold up. Click on the picture above and it will take you to the multi pillow back version in Performance fabric.
      Good Luck!
