Outfit of the Week
I have had many requests for red, so here you go.

If money were no object I would snatch up this beautiful red cashmere sweater from COS (love the style). I love and own the Galway jeans from Frank and Eileen (they are pricey but well worth it). This beautiful bag from Etsy is wonderful and not overly expensive. I just ordered the indigo mules from Etsy, and love the beautiful earrings from Federico Jimenez (an artist whose work I admire). If you love spearmint green you could sub out this beautiful (less expensive merino wool sweater also from COS)

I love these jeans from Gap and plan to order them (per the good reviews), the sweater is not made of natural fabrics but gets good reviews, the ballet flats look comfy from Zara, the kilim bag is reasonable on Etsy, and the earrings are also inexpensive on Etsy.

Do we Lose Our Sense of Humor as we Age?
Apparently we do according to many studies. Do we have to? To maintain our sense of humor as we age, we need to actively seek out laughter by surrounding ourselves with other lighthearted people. Watch comedies, engage in playful activities. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself. Stay informed about current events that can spark humor, and don’t take events too seriously. Find joy in everyday situations and have a big belly laugh every once in awhile.
Food and Wine 22 Outstanding Bell Pepper Recipes
I love peppers and love to incorporate them into recipes whenever I can. Every one of these recipes from Food and Wine sound like they are worth trying so I have added them to my rotation list.

Forget about Dressing your Age
I don’t often speak about it, but I find it annoying when the fashion police dictate what we should and shouldn’t wear. I cannot wear dresses above the knee (but I never could really), I try and avoid sleeveless but there are many women my age that look great in sleeveless. I don’t wear heels (because I can’t). Does that mean that every single woman over 60 shouldn’t? Of course not, wear what makes you feel good and try not to look like you did in your high school yearbook picture, Try a different hairstyle, experiment with trends that flatter you, and own your own style. There are no hard and fast rules in my humble opinion.

Iris Apfel defied all the chatter about what one should and shouldn’t wear after 40, 50 and beyond. She owned her own style that was defined by eclectic, bold, and unapologetically vibrant use of color. Her look was characterized by oversized glasses, layered accessories, and a fearless mix of patterns and textures. She was one of a kind.

I’m always bucking the trend, my sense of humor has improved significantly as I’ve aged … more and more I find the irony, ridiculousness and general humor in all the things that used to annoy me. xo
If I need a good laugh, there are two old movies which do the trick, ‘Life of Brian’, and ‘Animal House, National Lampoon’, or the Blackadder series ‘in the trenches’. My mantra is, one might as well laugh about getting old with its grey hair, saggy skin, droopy boobs, thinning bones and numerous health issues, because at least one is still alive and as a retired Oncology/Palliative Care nurse makes me very appreciative of that fact.
Cindy,
Always love seeing your outfits! Red is such a cheerful pop of color and look good on many. That sweater is gorgeous!
I know many people who have gotten grumpier as they age, I think maybe because of their declining health. Then again, I know lots of people like my father-in-law who was cheerful to almost the end.
Iris was a fascinating woman and her life even more so. I could not agree with you more, wear what you like. Don’t let people tell you how to dress, live, eat, travel, and enjoy life.
I don’t think we lose our senses of humor as we age! We need it more and you wouldn’t believe how funny the old guys are in my yoga class. Love red and it looks so good on you.
You are starting to inspire me with red – it has to be vibrant red – and so I purchased a red cardi the other day (online) and today, a woven red handbag which will actually take me right through to next winter I think. It’s a Picotin-style which is my all-time favourite handbag style. Of course, we’re in the middle of spring, but red is a great explosion of colour at any time. Whilst I’d never have the courage to dress like Iris, she was so individual and impressive that she is an iconic inspiration and she always had a splash of red somehwere.
Humour – husband and self laugh heaps. Often at ourselves. Both almost 73. And we laugh with friends too and with our grandson. It’s a really refreshing and necessary balance to what’s happening in the world right now and it recharges us when we realise we’re on the downhill run. The run that some days has far too much speed.
Love those mules, Cindy. Do you find it hard to keep mules on?
Love your taste in decor and your outfits of the week, Cindy. I followed the colorful Iris Apfel for years. She was a true icon in many ways, and could really rock her accessories!
Loved today’s post!! I have red in my house with a splash of bright green! I have always worn red but since my hair is now white/gray, I have to be careful of what shade of red that I wear. Also saved so many of the bell pepper recipes that I can’t wait to try! Still have some left in the garden so will be using those right away! Also loved the mention of Iris, when I grow up (am 70 now) I want to be like her, living life the way she wanted!!
Another fun post! I love red and especially in the fall with camel. I grew up wearing red and my Mom taught me how to coordinate my wardrobe. I remember having camel, red, navy and avocado green to coordinate. I do that to this day! I know you do too!
Ah, just what I needed this morning, permission to wear my red sweater and a dose of Kathryn Ireland. I’ve been following her for years and have several of her books. I appreciate her style because it is real, not about throwing everything away and making everything white.
Love both of this weeks outfit posts. I’m on the lookout for a hip length red cashmere sweater! Love the COS but my wallet protests…the blue and red is a nice fall combo for those of us for whom the usual autumn shades do no favours..
Losing our sense of humour is a great topic…I am not sure if it’s that or increased pessimism? I find as my husband has aged he grows increasingly pessimistic and grumpy, this from the guy who always looked on the bright side of life:( unfortunately he comes from a family that wallows in negative thought so nuturevs nature? My father on the other hand kept his positive and future oriented attitude to life until the day he passed at 98 in Nov’23. His sister ( in her early ‘90’s is the same as were two other sisters who lived well into their ‘90’s! I am convinced that folks who keep a happy and positive outlook live longer and better lives. Interestingly my Dad faced many challenges in his life losing his mom at 13, enduring WWII, loss of a child, losing his family business, several major illnesses/surgeries, losing and adult child then facing my mother’s ten year long battle with Alzheimer’s and her death at 93. Every time he bounced back finding joy in grands and great grands, his family and friends. What I want to make a point of is that my Dad grieved these situations but did not perseverate nor make them his ‘raison d’être’.
I’m 72 and remain cheerful (with a heightened sense of humor) while my 76 yr. old husband has also become more dour. We’ve been married almost 50 years and I love him dearly but fight the urge to tell him to “Lighten up!” We have good health, few money concerns and four wonderful grandchildren and I’m worried he’s missing out. Thanks for sharing your dad’s story.
I just purchased a beautiful Quince red cashmere sweater which is hip length and loose fitting. At under $100, it is an outstanding value.
Thanks Cindy!! I look forward to even more red!!! I love the blue, cool tone reds. Especially as we head into cooler weather. I think you could organize a red themed post with your other blogger friends. It would be a super hit. Many of us are so tired of Beige and Earth Tones. We crave color in our souls!! 🖍️
What a great post today. Humor, personal style, feel good colors. The good life!
PS. I recently used the resale site from Frank and Eileen. https://reloved.frankandeileen.com/
I had a few pieces that weren’t working for me. Was able to easily sell them, and chose to get store credit from the original Frank and Eileen site. I’m now enjoying my new travel set, and an Eileen denim shirt, in just the right colors and size!
There are some great resale buys if you know what you’re looking for.
Hello Cindy,
Happy Sunday! I love Kathryn Ireland and have one of her books. She was featured in a Netflix series about interior designers some years ago now and it was wonderful seeing her “in action” with clients and seeing her dealing with her own personal life! She has an amazing place in France very envious. Adore red…I bought a terrific red Ralph Lauren wool sweater a couple of years ago on sale and that is one of my all time favorites, and for my daughter’s wedding I wore red slingbacks!
Have a wonderful week and thank you for the blog and the pepper recipes! xo
Hi Francesca
I always love hearing from you!! Million Dollar Decorators sure was fun wasn’t it? I wish they would bring it back! I love Ralph Lauren and am constantly scouring the resale sites for treasures from the past.
Every time Iris was on HSN with her large, plastic bracelets and necklaces and one of a kind coats I tried to watch. I was familiar with her for years from magazine articles. She was such an original! Also she had a super sense of humor. There is no one that I am aware of that will replace her in the fashion and aging world. Cindy..if you find such a person please write about them!I have a purse strap that I am sure she would have used as a necklace because it is tortoise shell plastic but goes well with the straw summer handbag surprisingly and I have received many complements about it. I do love tomato red but think the only way I would accessorize with it would be ballet flats or a handbag at present. This Fall’s colors are quite appealing to me, however..brown, olive, burgundy and what I would describe as charcoal. Thank you for your writing; I told my sister you do so much research and save us a lot of time with our own fashion . Dianne
Hi Dianne
I am always searching for interesting stylish peeps to interview for Ageless Style. I like to keep a balance between the famous and not so famous. I didn’t realize that Iris Apfel and her husband founded Old World Weavers (one of my fabric fabric houses when I was still doing interior design). I really want to read more about her interesting life. Tell me more about your purse strap. I think I need it! Thank you for recommending me to your sister. I so appreciate it. I do spend hours on my posts, but I try to keep Sunday’s quick and easy to read!
