Create 8 Holiday Looks from Items in Your Closet
The beauty of aging is that we no longer feel compelled to rush out and buy something new to wear every time we have an occasion to dress for. Sure, these particular instances are fun to shop for, but we want our closet filled with intentional pieces that we can wear over and over instead of items we purchased for a particular occasion that we might never wear again. With a little creativity and strategic styling, we can create multiple holiday-ready outfits for luncheons, family dinners, office parties and more using pieces already hanging in our closets. Let’s chat about how to create 8 holiday looks from items in your closet.
Create 8 Holiday Looks from Items in Your Closet
Add a Little Edge
For a holiday look that truly rocks, don’t be afraid to add a little edginesss. Some leather, combat boots or a tulle skirt , can be the secret ingredient that keeps a festive look alive.

Amp up your outerwear. Leather jacket here (no longer on sale), tulle skirt here, boots(a few here), brooch similar here, bag similar here.
Own your Look with Accessories
Accessories can really transform an everyday look to a holiday outfit. A sparkly bag, earrings, necklace or bracelet can transform simple pants and a blouse work look into an easy evening holiday look.

I was gifted this great shirt from Wiggy Kit that ties at the waist (pricey but beautifully made), similar here, pants similar here, scarf here, vintage J crew bracelet here, shoes similar here. clutch similar here, necklace vintage J Crew here.
Add a Pop of Red
To make any outfit feel Christmasy, throw on a pop of red. A red sweater or cardigan works year-round, but really pulls its weight during the holiday season. Pair it with a black maxi or midi, velvet trousers, or embellished jeans to really make it pop. Add your favorite heels or boots, and you have an effortlessly festive ensemble.

This sweater is one of my favorite Quince sweaters. I also own it in black and wouldn’t mind having gray! It has a flattering silhouette with the side slits so it is just slightly boxy (I am wearing a medium), old Eileen Fisher velvet pants (some on eBay here), and price friendly at Loft here ,ballet flats here.
Luxe Fabrics add Instant Holiday Glamour
A silk pant or skirt instantly infuses your holiday ensemble with luxurious texture and sophisticated movement, providing an unexpected yet elegant alternative to traditional party wear.

You know I love the combo of citron and purple. I found these pants on Etsy, because I have been coveting these. The pants are old Macy’s INC brand, aren’t they great? I found a pair here. I love these burgundy birdies. I have owned the black for years. Jacket vintage Ralph Lauren. Rhinestone bracelet vintage J Crew. Ebay is a great spot to shop some of the really good older J Crew rhinestone pieces.
The Statement Piece
If you have one special piece, a statement jacket, , or an embellished top you can build your entire outfit around it. Maximize one investment piece and build the outfit around it.

I bought this jacket for myself for my birthday (71 next week). It is a splurge from Sea New York. It is fully lined and beautifully made. I kept thinking I would find one on eBay and I finally purchased it on sale. I will wear it with jeans, faux leather pants and more! I am wearing a medium but probably could have worn a small as well. I can also wear it over a sweater. Their line is so clever. Some of the items are a little over the top worn together but worn alone as a statement they can be lovely. I paired it with this fabulous BR taffeta skirt, and organza shirt, (love this shirt with jeans and faux leather as well) and Gentle Souls boots.
Add a Playful Element
Don’t be Afraid to to capture the true spirit of the season, by curating a playful holiday outfit by mixing unexpected patterns, or whimsical details that show off your unique personality.

Add some sparkle with vintage brooches. Mersea gifted me this great jacket (that I have worn to death), and shirt. I paired it with the fabulous Lisa Bayne for Artful home skirt (use code cindy25) for 25% off. Vintage rhinestone bracelet.
Elevate Everyday Luxe Knits
Transform your favorite cozy sweater knit looks for a holiday gathering by pairing them with a festive scarf and some sparkling jewelry.

This sweater from ALC (splurge), similar from Lands End here,(theory has a cardigan in the same color on sale here) feels like butter, pants gifted from Theory (now on sale at a great savings) are soft and cozy, booties (they come in wide) I should have sized down to 7.5. Scarf is vintage Ellen Tracy.
Up Your Everyday Blazer Game
Elevate your everyday wool blazer for the holidays by simply swapping out your wool pants or skirt for something more party ready like tulle, velvet or

I have had this black blazer for years and I still love it, very similar from Rag and Bone at Nordstrom Rack at a great price here. Chicos shirt here, vintage rhinestone brooches (several options in my shop here). Vintage petit point bag (similar here) My combat boots are old. You can find a few pairs here on Poshmark. I love this style because they are somewhat streamlined and very comfortable.
Rag and Bone is having their Flash Holiday Sale Here. It is hard to keep up with all these salels!

Just went out and bought myself a pair of combat boots! I love your style!
Hi Sara!
Woo Hoo! Enjoy and Happy Holidays!!
Cindy, a beautiful present you purchased for your birthday, the jacket looks so good on you with your pretty healthy looking silver hair. If I lived in your neighborhood I would pay a visit to your hair stylist.
I had a pair of lime green pants similar to yours that I donated this year. Where can you lead me to check these out? Love the color, it’s so striking.
When is your official birthday next week?
They roll around way too fast. I did try to give away my birthday in November and no one would take it. 🤷♀️ Shucks! I’m 74, how in the earth did this happen.
Happy Belated Birthday Dear Katherine! Now that is a thought…give away our birthday!! Those pants are great they were like $30 on etsy. They are INC (from Macys) one of their house brands back in the day! I could only find one other pair which I linked above. They are size 6 if anyone can wear them. That is what I am wearing.
Happiest birthday!
Thank you Maureen!!
Cindy, I loved this post. Wonder if you could tell us which Etsy shop sells those gorgeous green pants. They are beautiful.
Hi Kay
I emailed you. I found 1 pair on eBay. They are from INC. Keep your eyes open I am sure more will turn up if those don’t work! They were $35
Thanks so much Cindy. I will check out eBay and also look for fabric and perhaps sew something similar. I thought those pants would be fun for the holidays or other occasions.
I appreciate you getting back to me.
As always, Cindy, great looks. My favorite is the black blazer with the petit point bag. You’ll be a knockout any place you go. xoxox, Brenda
Hi Brenda
That petit point bag was Steve’s mothers, and that blazer is from Peruvian Connection probably 10 years ago. Happy Holidays my friend!
Cindy, I love your style!
It is so refreshing to see a blogger actively wearing clothing and jewelry in a true high/low mix, that includes items that have been sourced on resale sites.
There was a great article in The New York Times recently. It talked about how Gen Z shoppers are making thrifting their primary type of shopping, and wearing outfits that are “ fun, stylish and deeply personal.”
I volunteer at a great charity thrift store. At our clothing meeting yesterday, we discussed this article. In our college town (Boulder, CO) we see so many young folks who are turning away from fast fashion, and trends. Love it!
At our age, we have gems in our own closets, can afford some stellar pieces now and then, and might have fun shopping resale to fill in the gaps. Reduce, reuse, and recycle!
You certainly embody that!
PS I also love how you embrace your striking silver hair!
Hi Lisa
I am so glad the younger “kids” are thrifting. It has been my way of life forever!! Who doesn’t love a bargain and the thrill of the hunt!! Our kids have always had a mix of old and new in their homes. My hair has been gray since my daughter married and I believe they have been married 13 years? Something like that!!
You bring such joy! You are very talented and I treasure your talent for bringing great style to life. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Lynn you ladies bring joy to me everyday! I am so grateful for you all!
I love the Sea New York outfit you put together. Lots of inspiration in this post!
Hi Pat
You would look fabulous in that jacket!!
I just don’t “get” combat boots. In my area of the world I remember teenagers wearing them but not adult women. Maybe its a local thing. I’m not being critical……I just don’t understand.
Hi Pat
I completely understand! I don’t get those jeans with the big cuffs that look like they are pinned up ready for the tailor. We all have items we just truly don’t understand or care for!! And anyone is welcome to express their opinions here, as long as we are kind to our guests. That is a place to share and critique ideas..no need to apologize!
