Elevate Your Outdoor Space with these Chic Durable Patio Umbrellas

Cindy Hattersley's Courtyard with Midtown Unbrellas

This is a sponsored post but I personally reached out to Midtown Umbrellas. I have been researching umbrellas since last summer, and have had several companies offer me umbrellas. I wasn’t willing to go through the frustration of buying another lemon. I normally link to articles that are helpful. I have to be honest many of the articles that I researched recommended ones that I had already tried and not had good luck with. After much research I landed on Midtown Umbrellas and reached out to them. We recently added shutters to our courtyard area and I wanted some stylish practical umbrellas to provide more shade and add interest.

WHAT MAKES THIS UMBRELLA GREAT (IN MY OPINION)

Why do I think Midtown Umbrellas make the best patio umbrellas? We have had our share of fails. We have made numerous purchases of outdoor patio umbrellas from high end to low end. Most were not worth the hype, regardless of the price.

QUALITY OUTDOOR FABRIC

The umbrella’s canopy should be made of durable fade & mildew-resistant outdoor fabric with UV protection. Midtown Umbrella’s offer Sunbrella fabric, which is guaranteed not to fade for five years or Terrylast (new to me) which has a ten year warranty. We have purchased umbrellas with inexpensive acrylic fabric that would mold or fade after one season too many times to mention.

STURDY UMBRELLA STAND

A common mistake people make (we have) is not buying a sturdy umbrella base. We have had umbrellas end up in the pool or turned over on their sides too many times. We have purchased numerous stands from Home Depot, Amazon, Walmart and others that don’t fit properly. The umbrellas move around in the stands and become unstable. The 55 lbs base of the Midtown Umbrellas give you a “discrete and elegant way to properly secure your market or tilt umbrella, whether used under a table or free-standing”. Translation, no ugly stand that creates an eyesore. Incidentally, Steve is going to drill a hole in the top of our Frontgate tables (they are hollow) and the umbrella will stand will barely be visible. It will still be secure due to the heavy duty base.

POP UP SYSTEM

This umbrella has a push and pop mechanism, rather than a complicated pulley system. I love the simplicity and it operates beautifully. This one doesn’t have a tilt mechanism (in my opinion these always cause problems-more opportunities for malfunction). It has a key that locks it into place. They do carry umbrella’s that tilt as well as cantilever umbrellas if that is your choice. (Note the pretty wood-grained ribs). I love this simple functional design.

WIDE RANGE OF FABRIC CHOICES

Midtown offers 31 fabric fade-resistant fabric choices in the Terrylast and 17 Sunbrella options.

ALUMINUM WOODGRAIN-LOOK CONSTRUCTION

“The Wooden™ market umbrella opens just like your regular rain umbrella, except it’s a lot sturdier.” These umbrellas have aluminum (rust-resistant) frame with poles that look like wood with the durability of thick high-grade aluminum. I love the look of wood but the practicality of the aluminum poles.

Air Vented Top

The air vented top allows wind to blow through it creating more stability in windy conditions. The vents are also pretty blowing in the wind.

I chose the black and white umbrellas to compliment the rest of the courtyard area.

SHOP MY COURTYARD

If you are looking for a stylish long-tern umbrella that will last in the wind, rain, and sun for several years I would highly recommend Midtown Umbrellas. These are far and away the best umbrellas we have ever had.I love the wood grained aluminum frame and the simple sleek design. Our space required two of the small 8′ diameter umbrella. I like them so much I am going to order another.

      Hi Valletta

I considered ordering those tables. I am glad to hear they have worked out. I was worried they might be tippy. Thanks for sharing!

After several poor choices we have a very heavy duty umbrella with sunbrella fabric. It’s about 10 years old and still looks great (We do store inside during the long winter months). Cannot say enough about a weighted umbrella stand – life changing. Yours are a beautiful design! Love the wood look and and fabric of your umbrellas. Your courtyard is stunning. Such a lovely entertaining space.

      Hi Barb

We store inside or covered as well. We had many bad experiences and I adore these umbrellas!

Those umbrellas are really great! Your patio is beautiful! I would long for a pop of color somewhere though. I can’t live without color. I could see adding red or pink geraniums somewhere or some kind of vines with flowers coming over that stone wall. That would be gorgeous, but of course, that’s my style, not yours. Yours DOES look very elegant!

      Hi Barb

You know it is funny, inside I love a pop of color, but outside I prefer complimenting nature. . In the back we have blue accents due to the pool, but in the front I prefer not to distract from the colors in the landscape.

Excellent – those are beautiful! Thanks for all the great info, and thanks for the discount too! Your patio is so elegant and cozy – love it!

Your outdoor space is divine! The black and white umbrellas blend so well with your space. Do you have a source for the beautiful armchairs you have grouped with the wicker loveseat?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Rosa

Unfortunately they were from Ballard Designs last year and have been discontinued.

Thank you so much Cindy! We have had our share of umbrellas too that do not last. This last one tilts a bit and drives me crazy just looking at it. We are going to purchase the Midtown and my only other wish is that it had lights on the underside but on second thought that is just one more issue that can break!

  6. Kimberly Frick says

Love these umbrella’s! We too have bought our share of “lemons”!!! Will keep this company in mind when ready to get new ones. Thanks for the research and information. Your outdoor area is a dream. Love seeing how you make it cozy yet elegant. Bravo Cindy!

      Hi Kim

I got so tired of the apparatus falling apart or the cover rips and the apparatus still intact…so aggravating…I absolutely LOVE these unbrellas and bases. They have passed the wind test here in windy Templeton!

  7. Renae Frey says

Such a gorgeous outdoor space. The umbrellas are awesome. Looks like a resort.

  8. Valeri Johnson says

Thank you for your research and if I still lived in California I would buy quality umbrellas but living in Houston Texas where it’s extremely hot and humid and my backyard faces West, I buy cheap ones and replace as needed. My patio is large and paved with light stone . The reflective heat makes it unbearable so I have 9 umbrellas on stands that we roll around as needed. They cut the glare and protect potted plants. They last about 2 summers but I never pay more than $60 for an 11 foot diameter umbrella at discount stores and when they go on sale in the fall at the big box lumber stores.. Mine are used almost year round.. I will never have a west facing yard again or a large white limestone patio again. And I wish we had never left Los Angeles because weather is so important as we age. It really makes a difference in well being and an active lifestyle.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Valeri

I guess we live and learn, right? I know the heat can get oppressive in Houston!
