Build the Ultimate Over 50 Fall Wardrobe Capsule with Quince

Creating a versatile and stylish fall wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank. At this stage in life, many of us have basic foundation pieces; we just need to fill some holes in the new season. With the right pieces, we can look chic and polished and own our own personal style. So many of you have asked me to do a post on Quince, known for its high-quality essentials at accessible prices (this is not a sponsored post). You can probably pick up a few pieces each season from Quince that will help you curate a capsule collection that reflects your style at a great price point. I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie for their Quince favorites. Let’s dive into how to Build The Ultimate Over 50 Fall Capsule Wardrobe with Quince. They have so many versatile pieces.

What is a capsule wardrobe anyway, and do you need one? A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of essential, versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits, minimizing clutter and maximizing style options. Is it written in stone that you must have one? Of course not, but it does make everyday dressing easier and cuts down on the number of items needed for travel.

Sweaters

The fall season means it will soon be sweater weather, and time for my favorite staple closet piece. Quince has so many easy pieces to choose from in classic fall tones and more. Their Mongolian cashmere crewneck sweater is probably their best seller. Boyfriend cardigans are big this year (another style that doesn’t work for me personally)  It’s a great sweater for fans of classic styles. My lifestyle is on the more casual side. I tend to wear my cozy sweater with skirts or jeans. Here are my personal faves.

My favorite sweaters from the lineup, the oversized cashmere crew, cashmere hoodie, cashmere wrap, cashmere mockneck, cotton fisherman and the cashmere v neck (I own size up if you want a more relaxed fit)

I sized up to a large in the cashmere v neck, because I wanted a more oversized look. I think a medium may have been sufficient.

MZ Wallace bag, BR skirt, Quince cashmere

Above I am wearing the batwing cashmere sweater. I would order the cashmere mockneck instead. I do really like the color.

Last year the oversized cashmere sweater wasn’t available so I ordered the classic style in a large. The banana republic skirt is very similar to the Quince skirt shown below.

Skirts

Slip skirts remain popular. I have gained weight, so this style is not flattering on me currently.

Quince cashmere midi skirt

I like the cashmere midi sweater skirt I featured an almost identical skirt from Banana Republic last year in my post Stylish Ways to Rock Knitwear here.

Midi Dress

I love a sweater dress when the weather cools.

I like this Ribbed Cotton Midi Dress that I featured in my outfit of the week hereThis  Mongolian Cashmere Midi Dress is also a keeper.

Pants

Quince has many options from wide leg trousers, simple black pants, and cashmere joggers, to wide-leg jeans.

I have this ponte knit wide leg, and the cashmere jogger on my list.

Jackets & Coats

Bomber jackets are big this year (not a flattering style on me). The oh-so-popular chore jacket doesn’t work for me either. Quince has trench coats, denim jackets, chore jackets, and all of the fall staples.

Leather Jackets

Once the weather cools, I grab my leather jacket. I have had mine for years. I love a great moto jacket, and Quince has many to choose from here

The jacket on the left is very similar to the moto jacket I have had for years (it also comes in a pretty caramel color.)and the leather trench on the right is a classic look that won’t soon look dated.

Winter Coats

A heavy winter coat is not often needed here in the Paso area.

Last season I featured Quince and a few other brands in this post 12 Stylish Ways to Wear Knitwear in your 50’s and Beyond. You could duplicate these looks with Quince in whatever color scheme suits your season with these pieces. I love this double breasted midi coat, and the scarf collar coat.

Shoes

I have not tried any of Quince’s shoes or booties but I would like to give these lug sole loafers a try. The price is right, but I am not sure if they would accomodate my bunion! Has anyone tried them? I do like their ballet flats as well.

Bags

I really do not need any handbags, but Quince has a couple of favorites I would invest in if I did.

I love their woven options and this woven hobo sling is a favorite. I also love anything quilted and the quilted bag that I featured last Sunday creates a lot of bang for the buck!

Extended Sizing

Quince does feature several of their popular favorites in extended sizing options here

  1. Thank you for this article, it was so timely! I literally read about Quince for the first time yesterday on a travel blog. I was researching what to pack for traveling light and someone mentioned that the Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte pants were their favorite travel pants so I looked them up.
Can you please tell me if their cashmere is easy to care for? On their website they show a label inside a cashmere sweater which reads “hand wash” and “do not dry clean”. Have you ever tried washing it in the washing machine on delicate and then laying flat to dry? I’ve always had cashmere dry cleaned.
Thanks again for this helpful article.

    1. Hi Maureen

You really should never dry clean cashmere. It breaks down the fibers. Yes I was my cashmere on the delicate cycle and lay them out to dry.

  2. Is the gray outfit a sweater dress or skirt and top? Can you tell me more about it? Thanks! Also, I am a Quince fan after seeing all the great ways you have styled their pieces. Keep showing outfits with good price points!

  3. Can you send the link to your black leather pants that you have on with the leopard scarf?

  4. I ordered a couple of the Quince sweaters for my Scotland trip-I’m excited to try them out. I did try to put together a capsule wardrobe for Scotland- as I’m trying to just go with it one small roller bag ! This is no small feat, considering I feel like my underwear take up the space of most people’s shirts!! I think I have my bag packed And hopefully I don’t feel like I’m wearing the same thing every day!!
I love the sweater dress you’re wearing. Down here in San Diego, We won’t be wearing jackets for a while because our hottest weather seems to be September and October.!! I will be able to wear them though in Denver., But I will be spending a few weeks as fall out in Florida visiting my son and Grandkids! So no leather jackets out there!!

    1. Hi Martha

Yes September and October are often hot here as well! Certainly September! You are the world traveler!!

  5. I bought several Quince cashmere sweaters and a navy skirt last year and a gorgeous cranberry sweater and skirt from Banana…love their selections and price points no bad.

  6. I love the black straight skirt you’re wearing in the initial intro photo. Information about specifics and how to purchase it or similar would be appreciated ! Thanks for another great post!

    1. Hi Catherine

The skirt is from Eileen Fisher. It is no longer available in black but tan on the website here https://rstyle.me/+cTrRwQJcT3fU3DMByKn3WQ. Many of you purchased it on sale. Neimnan’s has it here in seaweed which I love https://rstyle.me/+GQndCjQMqkB2um1Ylppehw. I looked on eBay and Poshmark but didn’t see any. This is the description Organic Cotton French Terry A-Line Skirt. I am sure one will turn up on the resale outlets at some point if you are patient! Sorry that is the best I can do.

    1. Exactly. It all comes back to the classic Econ maxim: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” We pay, one way or the other.

    2. Hi Marcie

Thank you for sharing. I am glad you all feel comfortable sharing your opinions and thoughts here.I rarely moderate comments (and am criticized for that I might add) In a perfect world there would be no waste. However, we need to be mindful that there are those that want to look stylish but have to rely on less expensive brands to do so. I spend hours linking to ebay, poshmark etc. for the same reasons we are having this conversation. I am a firm believer in buying from resale outlets. I have done so for years. We recycle our waste. I had a compost pile for years when we lived in the country. We are mindful of the water we use. Hopefully we are all doing the best we can in our own way.

    3. Thank you for posting that. If the price is low, it’s almost always thanks to environmental and social trade-offs. I think it’s a deal we should all reconsider.

  7. I love your taste, Cindy! Classic but with a twist;)
Also appreciate your honesty, as in, what doesn’t work for you.
I have purchased a lot from Quince (great at Christmas too).
My all-time favorite piece is their cashmere hoodie. Great over a t-shirt or under a quilted vest in cooler weather.

    1. Hi Jennifer

We have to add a little fun to our wardrobe don’t you think? I am glad to hear that you have had good luck with Quince. I love a cashmere hoodie!!

  8. Hi Cindy,
Definitely going to try a Quince piece. They photograph much like Jenni Kayne and the price point is very friendly. I find that most cashmere does pill no matter how much it costs. I have a sort of pumice stone that helps when this happens.
Question… The orange vest ( I think it’s a vest ) shown with the leather trench looks so great on you !
Is it a piece that may be available now?
    Thanks !

      1. Thanks so much Cindy !!!
So kind of you to take the time to do that for me !
The last link is exactly right and in my size !!
        Ordered : ))

        1. Woo Hoo! I am a huge ebay, poshmark, the real real, thred up whatever fan! I always look at the resale outfits first when I am coveting something!

  9. Cindy! You found so many things I haven’t even spotted on Quince! Like the pleated cashmere skirt and dress! You look amazing! Love your style!

  10. I have too many Quince items to count-and the same for my husband. I am a true Quince fan. Quality is top, washes well, no shrinkage even in linen, good fit, cashmere is wonderful. I have so much of the linen collection and I cannot say enough about the quality.
My husband has 2 linen suits that he word for our son’s Caribbean wedding and they were prefect.
    He has the shorts too.
I have purses, pants, dresses, t shirts, bedding, earrings, you name it. Quince is 100% better than the hype.
Return policy is on point, free shipping and returns, what more can you ask for? And I am not paid or endorsed-just a HUGE fan.

  11. Where do they source their pieces from? Like Bette, I learned of them for cashmere and my first purchase was a zip front hoodie. Unfortunately, it pills easily and I feel it looks a little shabby even though I comb it after each wearing. I have a few of their other things that are not cashmere that are wearing better but the silk slip skirt I got was a little snug from the beginning and then I took it on a cruise. Need I say more?!

    1. Hi Wren
I have three of their cashmere sweaters and I have not had trouble with them. I have not tried their leather items but many of my readers swear by them. That is why I created this post as a less expensive alternative for those who can’t or don’t care to spend the prices for other brands. I always try to keep a balance here so there is something for everyone. I am glad you shared your experience.

  12. Thank you Cindy for featuring Quince. I have purchased several of their cashmere sweaters over the past three years. The colors are beautiful but I have needed to size up to get the proper fit for me. I think I’ll be able to wear these sweaters for many years.

    1. Hi Donna

Many of you have requested I do so. As I mentioned to Wren I try to keep a balance so there is something for everyone here.

  13. I know Quince’s claim to fame was its original cashmere sweaters. Since I can’t wear wool, I’ve never purchased and can’t comment on their quality or longevity. But the four items I have purchased — a linen shirt, a linen dress, a cotton fisherman cardigan, and a woven leather crossbody bag — were of poor quality. The fabrics are thin and the leather felt like something I’d get from Amazon. Quince is fast fashion and to keep prices low, the quality suffers. My opinion!

    1. Hi Bette
Thanks for weighing in. Many of my readers have raved about Quince. I have their cashmere throw which is very nice and three cashmere sweaters. All are of good quality. I also have a blanket and a set of sheets also of very good quality. From what I understand they are working to be more transparent, but they are not quite there!

  14. This was a great idea to do this, Cindy. Everyone should know about Quince for basics!
