Beauty Products for Mature Women that Work and Those that Don’t

This is part of a series where we share favorite beauty products that we are trying, those that work, and ones that we are still on the hunt for. This is an interactive post. Your voice is important. Let’s chat about Beauty Products for Mature Women that Work and Those that Don’t (at least for me).

You might enjoy my previous post on this subject What’s in Your Makeup Bag that You are Loving here.I am fortunate that I am sent many beauty products to try. I am always happy when they ask me to try them with no strings attached. That way I can provide an honest review.

Beauty Products for Mature Women Those that Work and Those That Don't

This month I was sent a group of Colleen Rothschild products. Colleen’s products are not inexpensive. I wanted to get this post to press in case you are fans because she is currently having 26% off all products here. To be honest, I was not familiar with her line. Of the four she sent, three were winners. She sent her Hyaluronic Serum, the Retinol Supreme Night Oil, the Age Renewal Super Serum, and the Retinol Supreme Eye Serum.

I love the Hyaluronic Serum, but it is not inexpensive. I had been using the Vichy Hyaluronic Serum which I like very much. Is it just as good? I don’t think so, but there is a big difference in the price of the two products. The second product that I really like is the Age Renewal Super Serum. I apply this in the a.m after my Vitamin C Serum and the Hyaluronic Serum. The other product that I think is outstanding is the Retinol Supreme Eye Serum. I think it is the best I have ever tried. I have also used the ROC line smoothing anti wrinkle eye cream which is very good for the price. I am still prone to the occasional breakout, so the retinol supreme night oil did not work for me. I am using a drop with my perscription Retin A to combat the drying and that seems to work.

Jones Road Beauty contacted me and sent me a few of their products to try. I had just ordered Jones Road’s eyeshadow in ash recommended by Jennifer from A Well Styled Life. They are really highly pigmented. I would highly recommend. They also sent me the highly recommended miracle balm (allure beauty award winner) in flushed and dusty rose. It smells heavenly ( made with an antioxidant and antibacterial plant oil). Check out the list of ingredients. That being said, it did not work for me. It is too oily for my sometimes oily skin, and did not provide enough color for me. If your skin is dry and you don’t need a lot of color, I think you would love this. I wanted to. I am going to order the best blush (another award winner) and try combining the two. I am a huge fan of the milk blush in flip. So far I haven’t found anything that compares. I have been meaning to try the highly rated Patrick Ta Powder Creme and Powder Blush in She’s Vibrant for fall. I have it on order. Jones Road also sent me the Everything Brush (who knows more about a great brush than Bobbi?) It is amazing. I would highly recommend.

JONES ROAD EVERYTHING BRUSH

On my own I have tried a few new products from Jane Iredale. My salon handles her line and the owner (whom I trust) recommended the Hydro Pure Tinted Serum with hyaluronic acid and coQ10 which I really like. I have the color dark which is a little dark for me. I would like to try her Beyond Matte Liquid Foundation for a little more coverage. I know many of you use her products. I am anxious to hear what you think about either of these. Lastly I am trying her Pure Pressed Mineral Foundation. I am not normally a fan of powder (it normally settles in the fine lines and wrinkles) but this one is a good one. Great to carry in your bag for touch ups if your face can get oily as the day goes on. I really appreciate the fact that her products are clean and contain skincare ingredients.

One more product that I (not sure I have mentioned before) is the Georgio Armani Luminous Silk Face and Undereye Concealer.

    Hi Cindy
I’m going to keep it short. I use Dr.Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45. 02 Medium Deep even though I’m fair. My face goes from
«  I just got out of bed, wouldn’t leave the house » to perfect coverage, silky complexion and lots of compliments ».

  2. Cara (S. Fla) says

I have to thank you, Cindy, because you’re the person from whom I heard about Vitamin C serum. I do think it’s made a difference!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cara

I use the Vitamin C serum religiously. I have tried several, and probably need to update that post. There are a lot of good ones out there now.

  3. MARILYNN says

Using lots of products is overwhelming and stresses me out. My mom has no wrinkles and has used the original Oil of Olay since it 1st came out. Go figure.

  4. Wren says

I will take more time to read through the comments later so hope I’m not being repetitious with my question. I recently bought a new palate of eye shadows because I like the colors. It leaves many little particles on my cheeks, nose, etc. Is price an indicator of quality? I have some Maybelline (inexpensive) and MAC (more)and have never had this problem? Any thoughts from anyone?

    • Cath🇨🇦 says

Wren, I am using a multi colour palette by Lise Watier 🇨🇦 purchased awhile ago. My Bobbi Brown singles were all almost empty, so I looked in my cosmetics bin to see what I had on hand. Colours in this pallet are soft and blend well, but I was experiencing the same micro amounts of powder dropping onto my cheeks . So I now tap the small brushes …soft neutral / blush for lid and a different brush for definition using browns… .into the sink before application and it does help lessen the ‘unwanted dusting’ . I am trying to use up makeup that is available rather than buying more right now. Always edit anything past dated, but this pretty palette needed to be used.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Cath

Wren has a point…and agree about tapping the brushes…why did it take me so long to figure that out?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

I think it was Cath who suggested tapping the brush in the sink. Great advice. I find that some do and some don’t regardless of price.

I quit trying to find the holy grail of skin care years ago. I stopped buying many products. At 75, I continue to not use many products on my face. I wash with CeraVe hydrating facial cleanser. I use Burt’s Bees BB cream as a tinted moisturizer, Benefit cheek and lip stain, a Burt’s Bees eye crayon and mascara. If I feel my skin is a bit dry at any time I wear a sheer layer of organic almond oil over night. I buy it at the health food store. That’s it. I do get compliments on my skin as I have very few lines on my face. I’d like to take credit, but I think that has to do with genes. Skin care is so tricky and individualized. Sometimes simple works.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lynne

I sure think simple is best if it works! I wore little or no makeup when I was younger. A wash of bronzer and mascara. Now it is more complicated, and I don’t want to look like I am dead in photos. Who knew I would be “modeling” clothes at my age!

  6. Miriam says

You may have seen the B-Glossy by Maelys on Facebook. I took the risk and ordered a bottle from Amazon. So I have to admit that I am really impressed! After using it on my hands and neck for a month I can see a difference for the better. I’m a fan of everything from Saie I’ve ever bought. The Glowy Super Gel is beautiful and the Saie lipgloss in “Play” is one of my favorites. On days when I want less but good coverage I’ve been reaching for YvesSaintLaurent NU Bare Look Tint. It smells nice and there are several shades from which to choose. The colors choices indicate whether each color is cool, warm, or neutral undertones. Ilia Bright Start Activated Eye Cream is working on my under eye bags (and nothing else has ever worked). Two other items: Drunk Elephant O-Bloos Rosi Drops give just the right amount of color on top of the NU, and Velvet Ribbon lipstick by Lisa Eldridge.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Miriam

I have not, but thank you for bringing it to my attention. I know Sandra loves Lisa Eldridge lipstick. I must try them!

  7. Cath🇨🇦 says

I so agree with others that have discovered Jane Iredale mineral pressed powder. The brush is well made and I have an extra kept for travel. I was introduced to Smooth Affair …JI face primer.
I use a daily face cream with sun screen and then apply Smooth Affair .Once dry, I apply the powder. I like the soft glow the combination gives my cheekbones. For touch ups on my slightly shiny nose, I carry Lise Watier 🇨🇦 pressed powder . LW has a good line of face creams, and I have used the overnight one , Age Control Supreme exclusively for several years. Works for my 73 year old face!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cath

I do like the mineral powder and I do not normally wear any powder. Thanks for all the tips!!

  8. Christine says

I’m 66, fair, freckled, super-sensitive, especially my eyes, react to all sorts of ingredients, stay clear of retinol, niacin, hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, all cause burning. If a current item animals tests and/or is “dirty,” replacing them with ethical and “clean” products. La Mer cleansing oil, used for decades, now discontinued, replaced with Naturopathica cleansing balm, dissolves makeup, even eyes, and loving it!
Favorites are Earth Tu Face olive oil balm and serums. Pacifica coconut moisture spray. Vasanti exfoliator (used daily, it’s gentle!) and Big Up mascara. Whish primer and serums (contains bakuchiol). Victoria Beckham lipstick (expensive but not drying and doesn’t cause a blister) and her eye pencils, best ever on my eyes, no irritation. Boomstick Rose for cheeks and eyebrow product (first one that’s not too brown or too gray!) Sunburn in 15 minutes, regardless of previous exposure. SuperGoop Unseen Sunscreen daily on face, ears, neck, chest, hands. SuperGoop fake tan oil, mixed w/body lotion, 1 to 2 ratio. And their face powder, not the “glow” one.
I would love a good foundation, I’ll check some brands listed here, phasing out Dior and La Mer products.
Thank you, Cindy, for another great article, and to all of your readers for their input <3

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Christine

I try to use clean products as well. I have heard the VB lipstick is good as well. I have been using Farmacy green clean at night. It takes off everything and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. I follow up with Neutrogena Hydroboost. I guess it is time for a post on cleansing as well!

  9. Linda Johnston says

Thanks for your reviews of different products. I started using Collen Rothchild just before COVID and continued until it was all gone. Love it better than any I had used before for skin are. But in a cost cuting move, I tried Clinque. Not for my 71 year old dry skin and L’Oreal which is okay. I am going back to CR skin care. Thanks for the sale notice. I wear very little make up, just under eye concealer and blush. I’m going to consider going back to a little more so I appreciate the options you reviewed.

  10. Cindi says

I’ve discovered RMS beauty and have been using most of her products now along with Jane Iredale foundation powder. Rosemary has a face oil that has been my holy grail. I use it at night as a moisturizer along with my Timeless serums.
I also use her eyebrow powder & pencil, Super Radiance Serum with spf 30, Blush, Lipsticks, mascara, concealer & etc….
Her products are clean beauty using organic ingredients.

  11. Becky Parham says

Lumify! Even if I don’t do full makeup, I use my Lumify. Also Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Cream Eyeshadow. Stays on, doesn’t accent eyelid creases, beautiful colors, and a kind of expensive tube lasts for over a year! A bargain!

  12. Prue Batten says

I’m 72 and have super sensitive skin and bouts of rosacea.
I have great success with Dermalogica Exfoliant and with Dermalogica Power Recovery Masque.
I use Cerave cleanser for dry skin when not using Dermalogica. At night after the cleanse, I use a L’Oreal toner which is very gentle on my dry skin and then I moisturise with L’Oreal 55+ Night Cream.
For day moisture I use Olay Complete Moisturiser with UV for Sensitive Skins.
I make up my face with all L’Oreal products. Good skin tones, smooth finish over sun-damaged and freckled skin. I also use a Revlon Photo-ready Blurring Powder which does what it says on the box.
And what would life be without hats? Cindy, you have shown me that I can pretty well wear a hat with everything and look really glam. After losing 1/3rd of my right ear last year to an aggressive skin cancer, I’m very conscious of using hats, deep visors and the best UV cream I can find. Currently that’s a Number 50 from Australia’s own Cancer Council but I read about a Number 60 from France the other day which is available on Amazon, I believe. Keen to get some of that.
And having seen the mention of Lumify – keen to get that as well!

    • Martha says

Good info. Currently recovering from Mohs and reconstructive surgery on my nose so I hear you about sun screen, freckles and hats! Where do y’all find good hats and how do you choose?!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Prue

I love ceravie’s body cream. It is the best! I do not have dry skin…still prone to the occassional break out sadly. I loved the Loreal Regenerist line until they changed the formula. Maybe I need to give it another try

  13. Renee says

My dermatologist recommended LaRoche Posay, their serums are great Vitamin C & B3. Also use the Triple Repair Moistuizrizing cream for body & face & Grntle Foaming Moisturizing wash for body & face. It’s been working great

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Renee

I know many really like that line. I have used their sunscreen but have not tried their other products. Thanks so much for weighing in.

  14. 1010ParkPlace says

I’m a no on Jones Road. Her products are too greasy and I broke out in lots of what looked like whiteheads. Took a concentrated effort to get rid of them. Bobbi Brown has always made great brushes. I’m still using her goat hair… yes, goat hair… brush from her original brand to apply my cream blush. xoxox, Brenda

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Brenda

That is what I have found as well. I love the concept. I just don’t think it works for certain skin types. I love her eyeshadows!

  15. Cara (S. Fla) says

I like Mad Hippie products. They’re natural with pronounceable ingredients, and many come in reusable amber glass bottles. I use the vitamin C serum, eye cream and face cream AM, cleansing cream, vitamin A and Exfoliating serums alternating and the hydrating mist, all before bed.
I really like Andalou Naturals Vitamin C Beauty Balm because it’s very light in weight, but has sunscreen.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cara

Mad Hippie has a great Vitamin C serum. I think I will go back to that when this one is done! Will check out Andalou…someone else mentioned it!

  16. Elle says

I use Blue Water Beauty toner, hyaluronic serum, and daily moisturizer in the morning and their vitamin C serum followed by the Miracle Overnight serum at night. Blue Water Beauty is an organic skin care company based in Southern Pines, North Carolina. My daughter discovered this line of skincare products almost 2 years ago. I have been using the products mentioned above fora year and a half. I’m 74 and my daughter just turned 40 and we are both receiving compliments on our complexions regularly. I don’t wear make-up daily but for dressing up I wear Boomstick color on cheeks and lips and Boom’s brow mousse and mascara for eyes. I, too, am a fan of Lumify .

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elle

I will check them out. There are so many great organic skin care lines out there now. I tried boomstick and found it similar to the jones road, a little too greasy for my particular skin.

  17. Dani says

I agree with others about Jones Road being greasy. Loved the colors but the feel was somewhat like Vaseline after applying. My absolute must for cleansers are most days, Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm and a couple of days using Tatcha Rice Polish. Tatcha products are amazing in my view as they are never greasy yet nourishing. After cleansing each night I apply Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM and have really noticed a difference. I believe the first time ever using a product. I’m 65 and have good skin yet it works very well for fine lines, especially under eyes and laugh lines. Night cream I use Tatcha Ageless Enriching Renewal Cream which is fantastic as well their eye cream which is a must. These products are purchased through QVC as they have specials from time to time. For concealer I love Fiera Luxury Concealer for the blueness we tend to get around our eyes as we age then an oil free full coverage foundation called Hide which I love. Feels weightless yet provides great coverage all day. I, too, am still on the look out for great lipsticks.

  18. Debbie G Milton says

So happy to see that you featured Jane Iredale’s pure pressed mineral powder! I have worn this for the last ten years or longer after one of their reps gave me a tutorial at our local dermatologist’s Lady’s Night. I wear Golden Glow in the winter and Latte in the summer, and both absolutely match my skin color–a remarkable feat, based on my experience with both high-end and drugstore level foundations. I apply primer, pure pressed powder, and then buff a bit before lightly spritzing with a setting spray. It is fast, feels invisible, provides just the right amount of coverage, and stays put! I enjoy your blog so much and find you incredibly personable and approachable!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Debby

The owner of my salon convinced me to try the Jane Iredale powder (along with my assistant Leslie). I have not been able to wear powder for several years. This is a good one.

  19. Sally says

I think I have sensitive skin (my own assessment)–that is, sensitive to Niacin and Vit C as well as oils. I break out in my T zone and can’t use mechanical exfoliants. So: currently I’m using prescription Retin-A once a week (I plan on slowly increasing to 3-4 times a week) and I mix the Retin-A with Cetaphil daily oil-free hydrating lotion. I use Naturism Azelaic Acid 10% for my rosacea and once it’s dry I put Iunik Beta-Glucan moisture serum on top (I also have the Vichy Mineral 89, which I like as well). I have Paula’s Choice 2% BHA exfoliant that I can use for break-outs. For sunscreen I’m using ColorScience Flex total protection face shield SPF 50. They also make an SPF blush and non-irritating SPF for around your eyes. I double cleanse to remove the SPF/makeup at the end of the day. For cleansing right now I use Geek and Gorgeous Mighty Melt, followed by Jelly Joker gentle cleanser.

  20. JOYCE gius says

I also love your hair back. I recently bought jones road and haven’t quite figured it out. I feel kind of clownish. So I need to watch her video.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joyce

My friend Elizabeth loves it, but she has dry skin and no lumps, bumps or wrinkles!!

  21. Laura Lambrecht says

I live in Colorado and absolutely love Jones Road! The Miracle Balm in Bronze is my “go to” for blush and eye shadow – gives me a fresh glow. The Shimmer Oil in Midas is great too. I understand if you live in a more humid climate these might not work as well but in CO my 53 year old skin loves it and slurps it right up! I actually use many of their products and the only one I’ve tried that I don’t like is the mascara. Eye lines are creamy and great. The Hippie Stick is absolutely fabulous for cuticles, fly away hairs and just about anything… and smells fabulous!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Laura

I absolutely love the concept of Jones Road, and wish it would work for me. My skin is just too oily. I am so glad it works for you!

  22. Gina Christman says

My favorite beauty “product” is a drop of Lumify in each eye before applying any makeup! I am almost 74 and my eyes look old when they are not bright white. I follow that with my regular makeup routine. Oh, I love Hourglass Ambient ultra-fine finishing powder brushed over a finished face. Does not settle in wrinkles and gives my face a glow.

  23. Jocasta says

Love Erborian BB Cream which gives a good coverage and Laura Mercier flawless concealer, with a light dusting of brightening powder afterwards. Still on the look
out for my perfect lipstick though.

  24. Debbie says

I have gradually changed all my makeup and night and eye cream to Jones Road. I love the miracle balm in the summer when I am not using foundation. It took me a while to figure out how to use it. It only takes a small amount. That is also true for the foundation. I was using too much and didn’t like it at first. Her price point is good for a “clean” product. I am 72 and have white/gray hair like you so I am always interested in your suggestions. Thanks for all your great information !

  25. Marsha says

Jones Road products are too greasy for me, or maybe tacky is the word. They cause my hair to stick to my face.
However, their eyeshadow is beautiful. The customer service is remarkable. They credit you and tell you to give the product to someone who might like it. Two things I have added and LOVE are Saie Glowy Super Gel and an eyelash curler!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marsha

I have the same problem. I love the eyeshadow as well…so highly pigmented. I have been eyeing that Saie gel. Thanks for the tip!

  26. Lee Davison says

Love the blog! I’m 80+ and am using the Jones Toad balm? And blush and makeup. It took me awhile to figure out if I took some product and warmed it up it works for me. It’s so hard to use a foundation without it settling into lines and wrinkles! Thanks for the other product info. I’ll try them later

  27. Jan says

I find I get (forever it seems) small milia from almost all under eye products.
Retinal is too drying or perhaps haven’t found the right product.
    Any suggestions?

    • Cathy says

I love CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum because it doesn’t dry out my skin. It’s the first Retinol product that I’ve been able to use 2 or 3 times a week and my skin doesn’t itch. And I’m getting great results – especially on my neck! It’s so much smoother.

  28. Sandra Sallin says

Thank you so much for featuring my YouTube video about Beauty Products that I would Purchase Again and again. I had the same reaction to the Bobbi Brown Balm. Too greasy for me. I do enjoy the Coleen Rothchild Face Oil. Oh, and Bobbi Brown does have good single eyeshadow colors. So many products so little time.

  29. Lynn Anne Miller says

I have used Yon-ka facial products for over 20 years. I love their Yon-Ka Lotion and carry it with me for a refreshing moisturizing spritz throughout the day. I use their cellular code line for aging skin.

  30. Renee says

I couldn’t use Balm from Jones Road either. Maybe living in SE NC was too humid for the balm- it was heavy and greasy.
