What to Consider When Choosing a Side Table

Functionality

What storage options do you need?  Do you need a drawer for easy access to your remote controls or a favorite book? Do you require larger accent tables with enough surface space for decorative items and a tablelamp?

In my den I have two small side tables that we purchased from Habitat Home and Garden locally. They provide a nice flat durable surface for a glass, or book. I have linked similar at the bottom of the post.

Style

Consider your personal taste and style. Do you prefer modern side tables with clean lines or more traditional options? Does an organic shape appeal to you? Don’t be afraid to mix styles and eras for a more collected look. It’s always more interesting in my opinion.

Proportions

Vary the shapes of your living room tables.  If your coffee table is square or rectangular, a round end table will soften the angular lines of your sofa and coffee table. Ensure the table fits your space and is the right height for your sofa or chair. Small spaces can be a challenge. The rule of thumb is that a side table’s height should be equal to or just below the height of the sofa or chairs arms.  Err on the side of shorter rather than taller. The teeny tiny drinks tables that are popular right now are not practical in my opinion. They would topple at the hands of a toddler or pup in our case.

Surface & Finish

End tables come in a variety of finishes. Do you prefer wood or metal side tables? Consider your surface options for your particular lifestyle. Will you be using it for drinks etc.? Does glass or wood require too much care?

Your Budget

I always advise buying the best you can afford when purchasing major pieces for your home. However, interesting small end tables are readily available at affordable prices.

My son and daughter in law have a small iron table in their family room. It came from Crate and Barrel several years ago. I could not find a similar replacement but linked an interesting iron option.

The small table in my son’s library is just big enough to house a drink or two. It is no longer available. I have been able to find this style off and on, but currently cannot locate any.
