SUNDAY Five-Mark Sikes Soup Fashion and Fun

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! I am so excited to say that I got my first vaccine yesterday and Steve is getting his today.  I cannot tell you how excited I am.  I do not have any symptoms.  I know some feel a little flueish (I think mainly with the second dose) or have a sore arm.  I have neither so today is a great day.  Have you had your shot (if you are old like me?).  You know the drill if you have been here before, Sunday’s Mary Ann, Annie, and I share fun finds that caught our eye this week.  Welcome to my Sunday Five-Mark Sikes Soup Fashion and Fun.

VICKI ARCHER A LOVE LETTER

Love this post from Vicki Archer about love no matter the day

PREPPY EMPTY NESTER WW JOURNEY

Katie from the Preppy Nester had a great post about her Weight Watchers Journey.  We have had the same one! As with all of Katie’s posts it is hilarious.  Pop over for a good laugh.

MARK SIKES MALIBU PROJECT LOVE

I am in complete awe of Mark Sikes’s ability to mix pattern and texture.  Although he is known for his use of blue and white he can put the breaks on color and pattern when he needs to.  In this project, he relied on texture as well. He is such a pro.

People often say I dress like my house.  I do often get inspiration for something to wear from a room or vice versa.  So for this week’s outfit of the week, I took inspiration from two of Mark’s rooms in this project.  I particularly love his bedrooms.  This room is a study in texture and all things brown.  From the art, to the accessories to the textiles.  It’s just so good.   For the outfit nearly everything is on sale including the cashmere wrap which is 50% off.  I own this wrap in Gray.  The shirt is what really inspired me.  Love the wider stripe. The only pricey item is the bag. All items linked below.

 J Crew & Madewell Outfit

When I saw this room I thought Indigo Bliss, right?  This room oozes comfort.  Here the textiles do the talking, vintage African indigo, and batiks.  The coffee table is the icing on the cake.

What do you think?  Could you lounge in the room above in this?  The Anthro Kimono is absolutely gorgeous.  I might have to pick that up today in Walnut Creek. The earrings are from Sundance.  The Artemis raffia mules are on sale. The Madewell straw hat is very reasonable and I like the strap.  Anyone else have trouble losing their hat in the wind?  The Sundance bracelet is a MAJOR SPLURGE but I couldn’t resist. The scarf and short kimono are from Etsy. The J Crew chambray shirt is a standard in my closet as well as the Madewell jeans. Love the straw tote with leather handles, so reasonable and functional.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE AND BEAN SOUP

Do you follow Sue from View from the Great Island?  She always has a recipe that catches my eye.  This one is REALLY good and healthy.  I did have to alter it a bit to make it WW friendly.  I used TJ’s Turkey Meatballs and rolled them in pepper (if you aren’t on WW don’t bother), and I replaced the cream with nonfat greek yogurt.  I always replace cream with yogurt and cannot tell the difference.

Cindy, I am FINALLY catching up with my blog post reading. Love the outfits. Soup looks really good. I actually like the thought of the meatballs because I’m not a big sausage fan. No, I haven’t gotten the vaccination. A real page turner book is Need to Know by Karen Cleveland; favorites; A Gentleman in Moscow and The Madonnas of Leningrad. Would love to have a rattan coffee table but the cat would think it is his scratching post. Pretty though. Great post.

  2. Lynn R says

Cindy I do enjoyed your post on Mark Sikes. I have an off the wall question; do you ha e ANY idea of the source for the fabulous rattan coffee table featured in the family room photo? I have looked online and have seen many rattan coffee tables but not that one. Keep up the good work. I look forward to all your posts!!

I received the second vaccine February 1 (health care worker). I felt just like you describe – excited. I had no symptoms either time and I hope you are the same. We just have to keep moving forward!

  4. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I’m so happy for you that you were able to receive your first vaccine so that you’ll be able to see Summer!
I love that Indigo Bliss for the room and the outfit! And I just ordered my first pair of ripped jeans! Why not, right? Can’t wait to get them!

Great post as usual. That soup looks delicious. Great tip about buying the meatballs from Trader Joe’s. Yes, I do believe I dress a little like my home’s decor.

    Hi Cindy ~
I think I DO dress like my house – to some degree. Black, white, blue, with touches of red & green, silver and gold – and some pattern.
Books I’ve liked recently are :: State of Wonder, by Ann Patchett, The Vanishing Half, The One-in-a-Million Boy, Beneath a Scarlet Sky.
    Love your blog!

  7. Nan says

Hi Cindy- have you ever read any of Mary Kay Andrews books? She’s Southern and funny. Stories set in the sunny climes of Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, focusing on spunky women who care about design while in mysterious circumstances. Perfect distractions! MKA loves antiquing, decorating, and food, so you just might enjoy her books.

Here in Tennessee, 70 and above are being vaccinated now. My group of 65-69 possibly by end of month, but we’re having an unprecedented deep freeze with ice and snow for over a week and this has stopped immunizations for a week or more and also delaying second doses. It’s 12 degrees right now! AWFUL!

  8. Barbie Witmer says

    Hey there Cindy~
Brad and I got our first shot in Sacramento and due to weather we were unable to drive back to Tahoe. We had to stay over a few nights down there…We discovered a fun new hotel called Fort Sutter Tapestry. Cool decor and great restaurant that we actually were able to take out and sit in the bar! We hit Nordstrom’s, Pottery Barn, J Crew, Anthropologie, West Elm, Target and IKEA! ! It was a great mini vacay for us. We head back down to Sacramento for our second shots this Thursday. I do wear a TON of black, grays, tan tones similar to my neutral barn house!
Just ordered the tortis bangles on Etsy. I have been looking for those for a long time with no luck.
Miss you guys, Barbie from snowy Tahoe

  9. Beth H says

    Great post!
I’ve read some good books lately. They’re not new but that only means that they’re cheaper to buy or rent. I liked The Mother in Law (Hepworth), The Bean Trees (Kingsolver), Faithful (Hoffman) and FINALLY read in its entirety The Goldfinch (Tartt)! I loved it! One caveat-do not quit-read the whole thing. So many people stop and then dislike the book.
Hopefully soon we’ll all be too busy to read book after book with all of these wonderful vaccinations!!!

Katie the preppy is one of my favs! Wonder who I met first, or how I stumbled into each of you. Lots of inspiration from you both. Reading lists…I have good books and love yo read, but find myself trapped on my phone w inspiration mostly decor blogs and Instagram! Katie’s reading lists great, here are some of my favs from over the years and I love the library! Join goodreads for book reviews, link up and see others 5 star reviews. Happy Sunday!

  11. Home before dark says

I got my first shot and was given appointment for “same time three weeks”, Still waiting for my 72 year old husband to get “the call”.
I hear the second one may be the “doozy”! Grateful. As for the question of dressing like your house, hummmm. Somewhat. Lots of black, shiny things (stainless and mirrors v silver!), artistic things, practical but kinda’ outside the box of normal, some vintage, some industrial. Just arrived; Thursday Boot Co. Combat boots…yes, I did!! Comfy, stylish (to me) and empowering edginess. Just what a white-haired pixie cut 71 year old girl needs.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patricia

I am coveting those boots as well! Won’t it be a relief to have both shots! We might be able to go to dinner soon!!

  12. Debbie says

Several great books out now. Pachinko, The Guest List, The Henna Artist,, Black Buck, Book of Lost Names…….

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Debbie

I am keeping your list. I still have hot flashes so got in the habit of watching tv to put myself back to sleep…bad habit…reading again. I have heard many good things about Pachinko and will refer to your list!

  13. Patty Andrews says

My husband and I got our second shots last Wednesday. I feel like we have won the lottery! I know how fortunate we are to have both shows and I am very grateful. I can finally hug my grandchildren soon.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patty
I know how you feel. Someone on Instagram said they felt like they were on parole!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patty

I love your lottery analogy! Yeah to hugging grandchildren! How did your second shot go…any reaction?

  14. Janet Arden says

As always, this was a fun post. Can’t wait to try that soup recipe. My husband and I are getting our shots next week and just realized our healthcare provider has already scheduled the second shot for exactly three weeks later, same day and time, I hope this means progress for all of us!
I also loved your earlier post about white kitchens. So many great ideas that will be easy to incorporate.
    Have a great week.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janet

Yes we are scheduled for our second shot as well in exactly three weeks. So glad you are getting your shot! Sometimes it pays to be old!!

  15. Linda Hurst says

Just received second shot with very minor side effects, well worth it. We made your spicy shrimp tacos last night – delicious!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Linda

Yippee! Don’t you feel like a kid in a candy store? So glad you enjoyed the tacos. We LOVE them. This soup is a winner as well!

  16. Cindy Adams says

I did have a pause with the question of dressing like my house. Good question, if you believe in the color seasons then yes we go to the colors we love. The style of houses we live in through our lives vary and require different looks like a cottage vs a condo.

Love all the clothes you chose, I want the camel stripped blouse but agree it’s pricy and have already shopped sales.

    Always love your posts.

  17. Elizabeth@pinesonccesandacorns says

Cindy this is such a fun post. Although I will say I do not really dress anything like my home and if I do I am not aware of it. I LOVE LOVE Mark Sikes, everything he designs is fabulous. Su from the Great Island is also amazing, this soup looks delicious.

    Have a happy Valentines day!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

I adore Mark Sikes. I like to say he brought “sexy” back to traditional interiors. That saup is a keeper. Love Sue’s recipes!

  18. Joanna says

Vicki Archer’s post today was exactly how we feel about Valentine’s Day. It is the unexpected gestures of love that mean so much. A forced day of romance can lead to disappointment, as expectations are sometimes too high.

Do I dress like I decorate? Hmmm. My style is classic and so is my decor. But while my home is bathed in light, neutral colours, I tend to wear a lot of dark, especially in the winter months. In the spring & summer I love color in my tops/dresses. The only color brought into my decor is through flowers. I did like how you took a room and created an outfit.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna
All of my furniture is neutral as well. I add color with flowers, art and pillows. It is much easier to change pillows than upholstery (and cheaper!). I tend to dress as you. In the summer I feel much more comfortable in color. I wonder if it has anything to do with the permanence of winter wear (ie the fabrics last much longer etc). T shirts and cotton are less expensive and tend not to last as many seasons. Have a wonderful day.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna

Vicki’s post was so apropos wasn’t it. Valentines Day has never been a biggie for me. More of a commercial holiday. I dress as you more color in the summer…darker in the winter!

  19. Cheryl P says

Glad you got your shot! I too am an “oldie, but a goodie” right? Since I work in healthcare, I got my shot(s) a bit earlier than my husband and sister. (the over 65 group!)Let’s hope we will return to some sense of “normal” in the near future! Have a wonderful Valentines Day!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cheryl

Yes some semblance. I know it will be different, but it will be nice to not have to hide out in our homes, and I would love for my son and daughter in law to be able to go back to work! Have a great day!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cheryl

Yes such a relief to get the first one. Can’t wait to get the next. Did you have any reaction to the second? Little Summer does not understand why we aren’t around. It is hearbreaking…
