Hi Everyone. Happy Mother’s Day! Today as usual I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie for our Sunday Fab Five. Let’s talk about a Precocious Child Turns Four, Pretty Gardens, and More. You know who that precocious child is!
SUMMER’S FOURTH BIRTHDAY
Our little character turned four. This was her first “real” birthday since covid and she enjoyed every minute of it. I am proud to say she was kind and appreciative to all who attended.
The look on her face says it all. Birthdays really are for children, aren’t they?
She was so enthralled with tiniest guest at her party.
The innocence and wonderment of a four year old.
WILLIAMS SONOMA STEAK COBB SALAD
Thank god for my daughter-in-law Lauren. I have not been cooking much in the last few weeks. Last Sunday night she had us over for dinner and served this delicious Steak Cobb Salad from Williams Sonoma. Colin cooked the skirt steak to perfection which also didn’t hurt.
OUTFIT OF THE WEEK
Can I just say I am in love with this week’s Outfit of the Week? I love this linen skirt from Banana with its vintage palm print. I love that they are revisiting their original vibe. I would tie the J Crew linen shirt at the waist or belt it with this raffia belt from Mango. I want the Olukai sandals and the Bembien bag from Madewell. I finished the look with a pair of raffia earrings. LOVE THIS! The great thing about this outfit is it could be worn into the fall as well.
SHOP THE VINTAGE PALM LOOK
ARE YOU COASTAL GRANDMA?
Two of my readers sent me two different articles this week advising that they thought I eschewed the “coastal grandma look. According to Southern Living “Leisurely walks in a sun-blocking hat, fresh flowers on the kitchen counter, Ina Garten’s rotisserie chicken recipe crisping in the oven, and going to bed early—these are marks of a “coastal grandmother.” You can read the entire Southern Living article here. My pal Wren sent me this article from the San Luis Tribune as well. What do you think, are we all Coastal Grandmas?
JANE FRENCH HOME ON INSTAGRAM
For some reason, Jane’s feed has not been appearing (thanks IG) on mine lately. I forgot how gorgeous it is. If you love what you see here, you might want to give her a follow here. I am gaga over this pool area belonging to Jeff Klein and John Goldwyn. The garden is designed by Wade Graham.
You can never go wrong with a traditional white kitchen with collected details. Love this kitchen by Tallwood Country House.
This beautiful garden Jane featured by Anouska Hempel Design gives me heart palpitations.
Well, that’s it from my desk. A Precocious Child Turns Four, Pretty Gardens, and More. As always you can catch up on all my Sunday favorites here. Thank you for reading. I am off tomorrow to “help” haul all of our large potted plants and more to our new home. I will be joining Annie on Tuesday for a fun fashion post on how to wear a simple black dress multiple ways. Then on Thursday, we will be joining a group of blogging pals for a favorite salad post. I am sorry I have not been doing my Friday/Saturday wrap-up posts. I have been too busy moving. Once we get settled I will be back on it! Happy Mothers Day to all of you spectacular mothers out there.
Now pop over and visit my pals Mary Ann and Annie for there Sunday favorites.

I know! Four going on 10. We have to come visit one of these Wednesdays. She would love it and I think you would get a huge kick out of her at this age

Your darling Summer looks like you!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary
Several people have said that. I did find an old pic of me at dance class that she resembled. I was never as pretty as Summer but I sure appreciate the compliment!
Barbara at Mantel and Table says
Great post Cindy! And reading all the comments makes me feel like I’m at a very lively cocktail party meeting a new batch of friends. I’m crossing my fingers I’ll join the ranks of Grandmas someday! Thanks for sharing all the fun and that darling Summer!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Barbara
I love your assessment of the comments. You are absolutely right. I can’t think of anything more fun than sitting down with all of you ladies at a cocktail party. Wouldn’t that be fun!
Juliet says
Summer is just too adorable! Hard to believe she’s 4. Already! Love this Banana skirt too … the entire outfit. And that steak salad … I just pinned and printed it. And out the printed version in front of Jim. Good luck with the move … so excited about your new resort/home. xo
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Juliet
It is hard to believe we have had the little character in our lives for four years. I bet that banana skirt would be beautiful on you! The steak salad is yummy. I bet Jim would approve!

Summer is a delight. She radiates mischief, spunk, intelligence and kindness. What a gift.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patricia
You nailed her personality. That’s why we love her so much!
Heidi says
Happy Mother’s Day Cindy!
Little Summer is lucky she gets to have you around so often. It’s really special to grow up knowing your grandma, coastal Gma or not!
Love a linen skirt, going to have to find one I can afford. Which means Marshalls here I come!,
You must be really tired of that drive south and back, but soon you’ll be settled and I can’t wait to see what your new home looks like!
Have a great week,
Xo Heidi
Nan, Odessa, DE says
Summer is o vely. Thanks for sharing the photos!
Can you share the recipes for steak and salad?
How make chambray steak do we buy? How thick?
Be well.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Nan
If you click on the link it takes you to the salad. My link works. I wonder if anyone else had a problem? Here it is https://www.williams-sonoma.com/recipe/steak-cobb-salad.html. Colin did use skirt steak instead of the New York. He prepared one cryovac bag.
Wren says
Happy Mother’s Day, Cindy and a double celebration with Summer. Don’t you wish you could keep her at this innocent stage forever? Love reading the comments about “Coastal Grandmother”. Looks like others agree with my assessment of you! I hadn’t see that skirt at BR yet but I’ve already been spending too much $ there lately. Their things are just sooo much better these days!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Wren
Hope you had a fun weekend. Was this weekend the Santa Lucia Highlands thing or is it next weekend? I love that BR skirt too. Their things sure are good now aren’t they? Unfortunately the prices are $$$ too!! Happy Mothers Day!
Margarita W. says
I’ve never heard of the phase Coastal Grandmother but I ride my townie bike around the neighbor with my straw hat and my button down linen shirts, try out new recipes from varied sources. I enjoy/love all aspects of interior design and my home reflects that. I have a grand daughter same age as yours,I just want to squeeze her and kiss their little face!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Margarita
Isn’t 4 a darling age? I think you are “coastal grandma”. Margarita!
Annie Diamond says
Happy Mother’s Day Cindy and happy birthday to Summer! She’s adorable and what a pretty party dress too make her feel extra special!
I adore that outfit! I want my house to have that look and feel. I’m so into brown and creamy whites these days…very coastal without a hint of blue.
xx
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Annie
Wasn’t that dress just too much? I am loving brown and cream as well even though it looks awful on me! Hope you had a great Mother’s Day.

Happy Birthday to Summer – I can’t imagine a granddaughter – your heart must just burst!
And Happy Mother’s day to you Cindy – if you have time, where do you get your huge pots for the patio?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Gray
We do adore her, and I am pretty sure she will be the one and only. My pots came from a place in Moss Landing called the Pot Stop.

Cindy Hattersley says
Hi KarEn
Summer calls me Gabi. She couldn’t say grandma when she was little and it just stuck. She does call Steve grandpa though.
Cindy Adams says
She and Princess Charlotte could be sisters, what a sweet, beautiful little girl.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Cindy
I never noticed the resemblance until you mentioned it!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Happy birthday to that little doll. What a cake!!!
Love your outfit of the week. I need those sandals.!!
Good luck with the move.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary Ann
I feel like I have been moving forever…wait I have!!
Karen B. says
Cindy,
I love the outfit of the week. Such a pretty color combination. I’m embracing linen this year, even if it requires more ironing (ugh). 😊
Happy Birthday to Summer. It seems like only yesterday she was 2 years old.
Happy Mother’s Day to you.
xo,
Karen B.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Karen
I do not iron my linen. I have to be honest! I have not ironed anything since we moved into the rental. I pull and tug and hang them out in the wind. They wrinkle easily anyway. I just embrace the wrinkles!!
holly says
Cindy, are you a Coastal Grandmother? Most definitely! When I heard the phrase and read a little about it, you were the first to come to mind. Your decor, fashion, and lifestyle all fit but with your own take on the definition. Not so much blue and white East coast beachy but definitely the Spanish Colonial colors of the Left Coast. Most certainly, a Nancy Meyers film could be shot in your home!
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day and thank you for all your inspiration!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Holly
I certainly could move right into any one of Nancy Meyers movie sets! Happy Mother’s Day to you to Holly!
Patricia says
Nice to know there is a term for how I choose to live :-)…I have no children or grands, just 2 beagle boys. I live in central Virginia and enjoy my own coastal grandmother way of life…southern women excel at this .
Susan KelleyNice to know I can excell at something! Being a coalst granny! says
Can one be a coastal granny if one lives in N.E.Florida? Inquiring minds want to know.Think I will try to aspire to that in my next life-without annuities. Happy Mother Day all!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Susan
Absolutely!!No annuities allowed!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patricia
You are so right about Southern Women, and who says you have to be a grandma!!
