I don’t know about you but I am hanging on to summer as long as I can. This time of year I can’t help but dream of my favorite fashion season Fall. In California particularly Fall has a way of sneaking up on you. Let’s look at some of the trends for 2019 that we in the over 50 range can actually embrace. Apparently, we will be revisiting the 60’s and 70’s. The fall season’s collection combines “colors from the American Southwest, with prep school styling”. The upcoming fall season will be channeling Ali McGraw, Jane Birkin and Annie Hall (via Diane Keaton). So, the question is, what are the over 50 fall fashion trends that we can actually wear.
According to those in the know, green, leopard, maxi skirts, leather, suits, plaids, faux fur and lace will be big this season. As in every season there are always a few trends that we can all embrace no matter our age. These are the three trends that I can personally embrace and maybe you can too.
#1 Maxi Skirts
I know I thought I was too old for this trend. Turns out it is actually quite flattering. It covers EVERYTHING up. The skirt is the linen lily skirt from Cp Shades that you saw me wearing in my post How to Stay Stylish In a Heatwave . It can easily be worn into fall with the addition of my leather moto jacket and these blondo nina boots. I think I might be in love they actually have a heel and so far very comfortable yippee ! The leopard shirt is from J Crew. 
I am wearing this ensemble with an old necklace from French Kande. I will link similar below
#2 Leather
Here I am wearing the same ancient moto jacket with a white no iron tunic shirt from Chicos and my favorite Spanx faux leather leggings.
I accessorized the outfit with a very old leopard belt and handbag from J Crew and Madewell mules.
The Chicos shirt covers the bum thankfully. Otherwise, I would not be able to pull this off.
#3 Leopard
I consider leopard a neutral and I am so happy it continues to be popular. This is the Sophie Sweater from J Crew., my only new purchase in this post. I love this sweater. It is lightweight (perfect for fall and later under a coat if need be), and falls and flatters beautifully.
I am wearing it with a vintage pin, madewell jeans, my favorite seychelles deep sea booties and tortoise hoop earrings.
#4 Patterns and Colors from the American Southwest
I embraced this trend many years ago, and I still like it. A little goes a long way at our age. I love this Peruvian Connection poncho (actually I LOVE everything they do), and it is on sale. I included it in my how to rock an over 50 travel post back in April. I paired it with the same faux leather leggings and an American Indian bracelet (similar)that I have owned for a while, and Vincent Platero Earrings that were a gift from my husband.

I am so glad to hear you say that about the Olukai’s. People keep asking me how I can wear flip flops? It is because they actually have arch support and they don’t look clunky! I have them in black and tan and I need to get the silver ones! They are worth every penny in my book. Also, thank you for the encouragement regarding the modeling. Cindy, I love how you put these pieces together! And Fall Is also my favorite clothing season. I also purchased the Spanx faux leather leggings, but am perplexed about what size to keep. Did you find they ran smaller than their regular leggings? I’m also a little concerned that if they’re stretched too tightly, the fabric surface will lose some of the “leather” look. Anyone else have this dilemma?

I actually have the medium. I have owned them for at least a couple years and they have not stretched out. They also have not lost their leather look. I had a cheaper pair (another brand) and they did both. Thank you so much for commenting and weighing in!

That J Crew Sophie Sweater is so flattering. It surprised me. My daughter looks great in it to, although I am sure she will style it with something that is more au currant!
The snake skin look is trending this year, also. I think it wears as a neutral quite like leopard. I bought a snake skin look top and love it! I’m on the lookout for a low heeled bootie now.
I find the maxi skirt makes me look bigger but you look great in it. Perhaps, a cropped jacket (aka moto jacket) will balance out my fitted top with long skirt. I’ll give it a try before I buy.
I’m borrowing your idea for a broach at the neck of my chambray shirt. Ok? 😉

I think the fitted top is key with the long maxi skirt. I am certainly not small but I have a smallish waist (considering the size of my bum). I try to accentuate the positive! Please let us all know if you find a good bootie!
LOVE all your choices, and especially how you put them together… that’s the trick! The late sixties and early seventies brought wide leg jeans (preferred these over bell bottoms), boots, midi skirts, peasant blouses and jewelry made of wood, beads and stone😍. Still look back fondly at my old photos decked out in all my glory. Thanks again for sharing your inimitable style and keep it coming❤️

I agree with all that you said. I really like the wide-leg crops with either sandals or mules. I am not a fan of the straightish bell either. I bought the small in the J Crew sophie sweater but I think I could have worn the medium as well. I guess it all depends on how you want it to fit. My daughter got the medium but the small would have worked for her as well. For reference, I am only small in the waist (big bum and top). Ask anytime about anything. I am certainly not sensitive. It helps everyone the more questions and comments we get.

Love your choices and your declaration that leopard is a neutral. I retired from work world in 1995, so my interest in trends is zip do da. I simply dress as I please! But glad to see some of my old favs have been dusted off: faux fur (Fabulous Furs, another addiction), lace, leopard,maxi skirts and ethnic pieces from Peruvian Connection…which was started in a barn not too far from where I live!

Thanks for weighing in. I love Peruvian Connection and think they do a fabulous job. You know what I still work and I wear what I want (jeans dressed up most of the time). Sherry Hart (design indulgence) said something that reinforced my comittment that one can wear jeans anywhere as long as you dress them up. I love lace as well as long as there are no ruffles involved. I look foolish in anything with ruffles. My tomboy past back to haunt me I guess.
I have to laugh Cindy bc as I told you before I study your fashion posts (Mary Ann’s as well) to get ready for any trip I take. Recently in DC as we were walking somewhere I noticed a Peruvian Connection store and I was like “STOP! We must go in there before we leave!” Of course all my guys, husband included, is like what’s that store and why is it a must? And I’m like bc my friend Cindy raves about them! ha.

I’ve never posted before, though I’ve enjoyed your blog, particularly the pictures of you in your clever outfits. I follow several of the others posting about fall fashion today, but you’re the one closest to my height (5’1″), so most helpful. I’ve been most grateful to see another petite older woman’s style.

Thanks for replying! I’m glad you’re going to try the CTs. I found the videos of stretching and instruction on proper footwear most helpful. I’ve come to the conclusion that the way most shoes for women are designed, it amounts to slow-motion foot-binding. We have to demand footwear that is foot-shaped, otherwise women are doomed to foot problems.
